2002inSouthKoreaandJapan.ItwasthefirstWorldCuptobeheldinAsia,thefirsttobeheldonacontinentother
thanEuropeortheAmericas,thelastWorldCupduringwhichthegoldengoalrulewasinforceandtheonlyWorld
CuptobejointlyhostedbymorethanonenationasFIFAamendeditsstatutesin2004toofficiallyforbidcohosting

countriesagreedtounitetheirbidsshortlybeforethedecisionwasmade,andtheywerechosenunanimouslyinpreferencetoMexico.Thiswasthefirst(andsofarthe
only)WorldCuptobehostedbytwocountries.
Atthetimethedecisionwasmade,JapanhadneverqualifiedforaWorldCupfinals(althoughtheJapanesedidsubsequentlyqualifyforthe1998competition).The
onlyothercountriestohavebeenawardedaWorldCupwithoutpreviouslyhavingcompetedinafinaltournamentareItalyin1934andQatarin2022.(Uruguay
hostedthefirstWorldCupin1930sotherewasnopriortournament.TheyweredefendingOlympicchampionsfrom1928).
TheunusualchoiceofhostprovedanissueforfootballfansinEurope,usedtowatchinginternationalmatchesonorclosetotheirtimezone.[4]Withgamestaking
placeintheEuropeanmorning,someschoolsandbusinesseschosetoopenlateonmatchdaysorsetupcommunalwatchingeventsbeforethestartofwork.[5][6]

DefendingchampionsFranceandcohostsSouthKoreaandJapanqualifiedautomaticallyanddidnothavetoplayanyqualificationmatches.ThiswasthefinalWorld
Cupinwhichthedefendingchampionsqualifiedautomatically.
