MOCK MIDTERM TEST

I Read the text and decide whether the following sentences are true or false and provide evidence from the
text:
Recently the electrical standards of Australia and New Zealand were updated to reflect a safety requirement. As of
3rd April 2005 all products sold to end users are required to have insulated pins. Some states/regions have extended
the sale of non-insulated pin plugs beyond this date. Clipsal has created a means of applying a layer of insulation
directly to the electrical pins without adding to the overall width, providing a layer of protection between you and an
active circuit.
Why do we need insulation? Research has shown that with the insulated protection applied to the pins the safety of
a workplace or home can be greatly enhanced. Previously an electrocution could occur from contact with a live
electrical pin exposed from an incorrectly or partially inserted electrical plug; the shock occurring when the pins
come into contact with a thin conductive material like that of a metal knife or Venetian blind. Having the insulation
covering the majority of the active and neutral pins will allow for an added layer of safety.
Clipsal has created two packaging symbols so that you can easily recognise a product with the new safety insulated
pins. A circular version of the Safety plug symbol will appear on most packaging whereas a rectangular version will
appear on header cards and wholesale point of sale material and other promotional pieces. Keep an eye out for the
introduction of the new symbols on all Clipsal packaging. In some cases, catalogue numbers will be slightly altered
to allow for the new safety pins, appearing with the addition of the letter S (for safety).
1) Australia and New Zealand still have no regulations requiring electrical pins to be
insulated..
2) Some companies do not obey the state requirements on
insulation.
3) New insulated Clipsal pins have somewhat greater overall width than their standard version due to the layer
of insulation inserted
4) New insulated pin plugs are much safer than noninsulated.
5) New Clipsal plugs appear in the same old recognizable
package..
6) When half-inserted non-insulated pins presented no danger in a workplace or
home...

II Complete the following text with the correct form of the verbs in brackets:
The world's biggest electronics company ________________ (establish) by Gerard Phillips in Eindhoven, the
Netherlands, in 1891 to manufacture light bulbs and other electrical products. In the beginning, it

______________ (be) one of the largest producers in Europe.
In the 1920s, Philips _________________ (decide) to protect its innovation in X-ray radiation and radio reception
with patents. Since then, Philips ___________________ (continue) to develop new and exciting product ideas like
the compact disc.

Philips nowadays _____________________ (employ) 256,400 people all over the world, and __________ (have)

III Write one letter in each gap to complete the words:

Resistance may be def _ _ _ _ as the property of a sub_ _ _ _ _ _ due to which it opposes (or restricts) the flow of
electricity (i.e. electrons) through it. Metals, ac_ _ _ and salts solutions are good con_ _ _ _ _ _ _ of electricity.
Among pure metals, silver, cop _ _ _ and aluminium are very good conductors in the given order. This is due to the
presence of a large nu_ _ _ _ of free or loosely-attached electrons in their atoms.
These electrons pass thr_ _ _ _ the molecules or the atoms of a conductor, collide and other atoms and electrons,
thereby producing h_ _ _.
Those substances which offer greater hundrance to the passage of these electrons are said to be relatively p_ _ _
conductors of electricity like glass, rub_ _ _ and dry wood. Amongst good insulators can be included fibrous
substances such as paper and cot_ _ _ when dry, ceramics, asb_ _ _ _ _ and plastics besides p.v.c.

IV Use the word in brackets to form a word which fits in the sentence:

2. A redstone circuit is a structure that can be built to _______________ (active) or control mechanisms.
3. On discharging the capacitor, the field collapses and the ____________ (store) energy is released.
4. This electronic collision results in the ______________ (produce) of heat.
5. A radio _______________ (transmit) is an electronic device which produces radio waves with the help of an
antenna.
