Abstract

This project is a floating house project, A house built on water. The house will have a
modern Architectural look but the foundation will be concrete hull that uses buoyancy force to
float. The concrete hull will be made up of reinforcement bars and water proof concrete. The hull
will be used to displaced a water weight that is greater than the total load of the building
including its self weight.
The Architecture must be a low weight design to reduce the weight imposed on the
foundation. Materials that will fill the house must be balanced at any two opposite sides to
maintain balance. Therefore the design will include furniture selection and balance analysis.
Moreover water wave analysis and wind flow analysis will be done to insure that the
foundation can resist the driving forces. Other medical testing will be done on water to check the
habitability of the water and what treatments we can do for cleaning the dirt if necessary.

Background and Justification

Ethiopia have a large amount of surface water. However, we haven't used it for anything
but for Irrigation and hydro electric power supply. This project will be a pioneer of floating
house technology in Ethiopia and can serve as a case-study for further studies. Also, floating
Homes are currently one of the world's number one tourist destinations. therefore this project
will help in our country's intention in making Ethiopia one of Africa's best tourist destinations.

Objective
To design a floating house for recreation purpose.

Methodology

Study previous floating house projects in Ethiopia and in the world.

Adopting specification from other country's to suit our country.
Design the Architecture of the building.
Material Selection form Architectural point of View.
Design the structure of the building and Floating foundation.
Build the floating foundation prototype.
Build the model of the house.
Document preparation.

Project plan
The project have six phases.
Phase I:- Data collection
Water sample are going to be taken and tested by Bushoftu water supply ..... to check for
safety of habitation.
Phase II:- Data analysis
Analyze the water sample taken for testing by accredited medical officer.
Water wave , wind magnitude and direction determination.
Phase III:- Material Selection and Site selection
Based on the Analysis report Site of construction will be chosen.
The materials used for building the house and foundation will be carefully selected.
Materials will be tested in Laboratory for different variables.
Phase IV:-Design the house

Architectural Design of the house.

Structural Design of the building.
Load Calculation with dead load , live load and seismic load.
Floating foundation Design.

Phase V:- Building a Model

Building the model of the house.
Building the model of the floating foundation
Phase VI:- Prepare Documentation
Write a booklet for Viewers with cost and Architectural Detail.
Write an Engineering document.
