Interview
The interview was held at the office of CEO Majid Hussain Malik of DIGIT Pakistan,
Gujranwala. We found him cooperative, encouraging, frank, and very much supportive
throughout the interview. The interview was conducted by our four group members, Jawad
Ahmad Nagi, Shariq Shuja Khan, Hafiz M. Hamza and Faizan Ahmad. Following questions
were the part of the interview conducted:

Jawad: Thanks for your time. I know you are a busy man right now, could you please tell
us a bit about you and how you started?
I am graduate from UET Lahore in Petroleum and Gas Engineering. I am also the alumni of
Misali public middle school, Cadet College Hassan Abdal & Institute of space technology,
Islamabad. I am passionate about learning computer technology and the way it is changing
so, after graduation and despite of the job hunt I started to pursue my future in the field of
Computer science by taking the idea into reality.
Shariq: WOW! Back up. Sorry for interruption, but youve just said that your major is
Petroleum engineering and you are running this software house?
Yes! As I was just telling you about myself, I was and I am passionate about learning computer
technology and the way it is changing our world and our lives.
Jawad: Well we werent expecting that kind of amazing turn in your professional life. We
thought that you are some kind of computer guy (nerd) since start.
(Smile) NO! I was not. Its all about the journey towards our destiny. Let me tell you something,
Fate: its out of our control but you are the captain of your destiny. It is what you want, what
you are meant to do.

Faizan: What was your first business idea?

My first idea is to help and motivate the primary schools students to learn computer science
for the betterment of this country because I have seen the Pakistani youngsters and children
using this service in wasting time for Gaming, Social websites and surfing websites of no use
or imparting any skill as a result.
And after establishing the company named DIGIT my first entrepreneurial idea was to help
the educational institutes regarding their basic need like composing under the named,
Composer.pk, which will be launched in December.
Hamza: What was one of the first steps that you took towards making it a reality?
My first step was a hard one, although no business idea came into reality by taking the first
step rather its the continuous process and proceeds gradually towards the reality and in that
you have to face different problems too. My first step staying more practical was my
registration on edx.org which is a platform that offers free online courses or classes for different
subjects of which I chose the Computer Science as my area to be specialized so that I may
become more clear about the field and understand the basic norms of the subject.
Shariq: What was your wish before you started the business?
Firstly, I wished that one day I will serve the coming generation through my ideas and thoughts
as you know how the software technology is changing the entire world dramatically. And
secondly as a businessman, the wish was to make it profitable. (Frankly speaking) no matter
what it cost.
Hamza: What were the main challenges you faced in your ventures? And what did you
do about them?
The main challenges were to find the resources like money, place and network of people, for
running the business. You know as well. But thanks to my parents and friends who supported
me especially one of my UETian buddy Reyyan Bhai, who own a company called RnK
Company. These three people in my life supported me in every aspect.
Faizan: What was your mission at the outset?
My mission was to help the community digitally because I found the gap, that there is a need
to introduce some e-services in Gujranwala that nobody has even touched the market of
Gujranwala yet in such aspect and it is now important for every industry to digitalize its data
to maintain the services offered by it to remain and compete in the market.
Jawad: Do you think that entrepreneurialism is something that is in your blood? Or is it
something that can be learned?
Entrepreneurship is not what that we think of it is in blood. Anybody of any age can be
entrepreneurs because when we do mistake, we learn, and business gives us the opportunity to
stand again and again. As Ive told you that it was my dream to do something in my life for the
next generation so, I entered in this field as an entrepreneur. You can say that I have some kind
of entrepreneurial bug for a long time.

Shariq: Did your parents have any kind of business?

No, my parents did not have any business experience or had any prior entrepreneurial
experience. When my father was young he does not have enough resources to feed the whole
family, and my father is the only person in my family who supports us financially by doing a
private job in Saudia.
Jawad: What did you learn from your biggest failure?
Never ever do partnership in business with your relatives or any friend because business
involves large number of decisions to be taken which may be the case that there may arouse
some sort of disagreement in any of the dealings which may lead to some of the unexpected
circumstances that pushes both business and relationship in danger.
Hamza: What is the strangest business experience you ever have?
Despite of many other experiences in my life the strangest experience I had was that the People
want to be the part of your team with no investment. They just want to enjoy the royalties of
successful life without contributing anything from their part. Despite of many difficult
circumstances during startup of my venture, the most difficult issues with my business was
financial issues and a motivated team which could help me to reach the state which I once
dreamt of.
Other strange thing was that whenever you try to get some advice from any of the business
individuals or successful entrepreneurs, they often do not tell you the truth, they will not
encourage your business plan and often misguide you and may provide false information and
often not tell you about the strategies you may need to cater the difficulties, may arouse in any
startup venture.
Hamza: Are you having some kind of partners or any employees? How many?
Currently we have a team of four people that you may say are the key employers. Two of
them have a software background and has worked in many software houses and are
graduates of Punjab University which helps in software developments, Android
Applications and webpage designing etc. that we offer. Others are involved in financial
and marketing services on social media
Hamza: What service(s) or product(s) do you offer?
The services offered by our company is the Software development, Android Applications
development and the website designing. It further includes the softwares related to
accounts management, inventory control, record maintenance etc., android applications
include Play Store apps targeting mainly the schools and educational institutions to convert
all the result related data and course materials online as in the case our unive rsity has an
online DMC and registration system of uams which may also be linked or made available
for the android platform too.
Academic management systems are also being designed as a website too in which all the
academic related records of students may be kept and the result, attendance or any

academic related status of students may be forwarded in the form of a text message or a n
email to the parents and a historic record of the student may be kept by the teachers, which
enables teachers to have statistical data of the students and how much well a class has
performed in the subject.
Furthermore, helping material for students may also be provided on the websites which
enables the student to use the technology efficiently and the feedback tab may be provided
on the website which highlights the betterment steps to be implemented, also dues, as
again in UET the dues website can be logged in, in which students can login and check the
amount of fees due to them and total payed amount and students may also be notified about
the events or any Important information to be kept like Datasheets etc. one of our ongoing
project on it is composer.pk
We also provide the social marketing solutions for the company by promoting their
websites and boost the traffic and appearance of their products etc. on different platforms
mainly Facebook, also we provide professional trainings in basic computer courses to the
people related to Computer Science, basic hardware and software and also social
marketing techniques
Shariq: How do you advertise your business?
Our strategy is very much innovating, because the local community of Gujranwala are not
familiar with the term technology, so our goal is to familiarize each and every community
of the city with the latest norms of the technology era so keeping this thing in our mind
we do door to door campaign which motivates the local community to come and learn
computer science as the part of their education.
We are also providing professional trainings in view of goal to educate the local
community. As far as our product is concern we do social media marketing and go for the
district advertisement companies.

Faizan: How do you get your orders about your service?

We usually get contacted by our Facebook page, and also people may have learnt about
our services by our official website, we also have a contact number and company landline
number along with email addresses. After the call or any client interested in our products
we invite our valuable customer to have a cup of tea with us in our clients service room
that we have in our software house in which we carefully listen the requirements of the
customer and put forward our price for it which allows us, as well as the customer to put
forward our demand and customers requirements that he wanted to be fulfilled in the
suggested time. And one thing more the customers usually love the seating area and we
also had very fruitful and very satisfactory business dealing here.
Faizan: Do you use the services of a professional accountant or attorney?
No, not at all as the company is still in the progressing phase and I do not think that at
such stage it requires a professional accountant for it we do have 2 people dealing with
finances etc. but they are not professional accountants because when you run a startup
everything is to be you like the marketing agent, the web developer, the accountant or even
the sweeper to clean your office.
If in the later stage our company may developed to an extent that it is unable to handle the
financial or other related legal issues, then for sure we will hire some master in it.
Faizan: Whats your companys goals?
As I told you that we are also providing professional training to the local community. The
company goals are to empower the local community by providing them the best and cheap
e-solutions also to motivate the local community to learn about the latest technological
norms which has keen importance now-a-days, in which we do door to door campaigns
also do different seminars in primary schools in which we also invite the parents of the
students so that everyone may get the advantage of technology.
Jawad: What is unique about your business?
Most of the times, when anyone starts a business he would love to work at higher level
where he gets maximum benefits in terms of profit, maximum growth rate etc. He wants
to be renowned as early as possible. Everyone dont want to help the local community and
tackle their problems. So the uniqueness in my business, I think is that we target the local
problems. We tackle these problems not in traditional manner as people do, but with the
help of technology by giving them best possible solution that technology can cater.
Shariq: What made you choose this type of business?
Gujranwala is a small industrial city of medium enterprises. The city has mostly small
cottage industries but there are few large industries as well. Most of these industries are
established by people having not so much knowledge and education. They are pr oducing
products, selling them in the local market and not more than that. Although there is a great
understanding of technology with the help of 3G & 4G in Pakistan now-a-days but still
they dont know about the technology. They dont know how to actually deal with it and

how to utilize it in an effective way. Also nobody has touched the community of
Gujranwala regarding technology yet so its a huge technological hub if we want to work
on that and the idea of promoting the IT industry of the Gujranwala is the main reason for
it.
Jawad: Have you ever turned down? What was your reaction and thoughts about the
future?
From the beginning to now, I have not faced any big difficulties or I wasnt turned down.
If something going to happen, I will take it as my first challenge and will work on it to
utilize my skills and overcome the issues because the company, ideas, people and the
employees belongs to me and I have to protect it.
I always say to my employees that Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Faizan: Have you any kind of experience with working other companies or group?
At this time, I dont have a work experience with any company or group. This deficiency
is the main driver of my skills and the foundation of my motivation that always gives me
the potential to work hard and to work for the growth & betterment of my software house.
So in the near future, we hope that we will be signing different agreements with different
companies.
Hamza: What is your companys position in the marketplace?
My company is small but the potential of our products in the market is huge and we are too
much focused with our goals which we will no matter what state may arouse will work to our
best as a team to overcome the challenges may be faced later.
Faizan: What do you think about your competitors?
There are lot of direct and indirect competitors for entrepreneurial firms like Digit.pk. In
direct competitors software houses involved in creation and designing of different apps
and developing software for every kind of work industry to solve their simple problems to
complex problems may affect our business. In indirect competitors, one of the stream is
graduating students. Who are still in there course studies, but they are working on different
projects to encode apps for different industries by means of their internship programs or
as a part of their curriculum. There are so many competitors in software development
industry but we are trying to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. We are focusing
on making software especially for educational institutes and providing our customers a
trial version of software which makes us different from our competitors because trial
versions for apps are not common in such industrial fields.
Faizan: What's your biggest secret about your success?
The biggest secret of our success for me is our customers support services. We provide
customer with the software demands with the desired specifications. Because in this software
market many software developers make people fool that what they are asking for is not possible

to be done by anyone or we can do it in such a way to reduce the cost of your demanded version
but the purpose behind their all this chattering is to trap customer and mold their demand
according to their developing abilities. We should always be honest with our clients and should
develop the products according to the desired specifications. This imparts a positive impression
on our customer.
Hamza: What's your favorite book/movie/music/life event? (if want to share)
Umm Ive seen a lot of movies in my life and the movie I like the most is Pursuit of
Happiness my favorite movie. Will Smith has done best acting in that movie and the line I
like the most in that movie is, This little part of my life called Happiness. This movie is one
of the source, from my sources of motivation
What happens in a few days, sometime even a single day can change the course of whole life
time (The Kite Runner) The auto biography of Khalid Hosseini is my favorite book.
Shariq: What's your favorite quote?
A ship is always safe at the shore - but that is NOT what it is built for.
Albert Einstein
This is one of the quotes that encourages me to take risk and take challenge of making a
software house after doing Petroleum engineering. I always have some concern that has always
involved the use of some softwares, it is some kind of hobby that I have developed. If I would
go for a job with my graduate degree that might be the safe option for me. But I put myself to
face the challenge of how I could run a business which is not related to my specialties.
I follow the words:
Take Risks, if you win, you will be happy; if you lose, you will be wise.
The first quote inspires me to go with my hobby and take risks to jump into the highly
competitive and growing industry of software development and this second one makes me
strong and determinant on my decisions.
Shariq: Which person who inspired you the most?
Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is the person who inspired me the most. Mark is an American computer
programmer, internet entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is the CEO, and co-founder of social
networking website Facebook. Currently Mark is only 32 and his net worth by year 2016 was
estimated at $54.8 billion. But the fact that he is one of the youngest billionaires is the less
interesting one. The cool stuff here is actually his start up story, telling how a kid became the
founder and later the manager of one of the most influential websites on Earth.
Jawad: If all of your contacts and products were wiped off the face of the earth tomorrow,
what would you do if you had to start from scratch?
It is my dream to be a successful man/Entrepreneur in my life. Ive seen many people that have
some kind of dream but they didnt care about their precious dreams. Dont ever let somebody
tell you you cant do something. If you got a dream you have to protect it. People cant do

something themselves. They want to tell you that you cant do it too. If you want something go
grasp it no matter whatever it takes.
I will go for another initiation of the business by wiping out all the flaws that we face before
and tackle them with more open-minded and thats what business stands for it again pushes
you to the limits.
Hamza: What are your future plans?
Although no one has seen the future and no one knows what comes after. You may perform
any action but the decision is in the hand of Him (Allah), who never lets you down. It is a nondeniable fact that everything is written in the book of your life, but remember you can write
your fate by yourself. You know the saying of Iqbal (). Let me tell you something great that
has been said by of our ancestor, Hazrat Umar (R.A).
It is foolish to remain idle by putting your hands still, and not try to work hard and get what
you want. Nothing fall from the sky for you that what you want.
So, no doubt I dont know the future, but if Ill get the chance Ill take my business to some
bigger level. I have a model in my mind thats proven and repeatable, so now its all about
taking that model into bigger and more profitable markets. The work on the front-end is always
more and the risk is greater, but the upside potential is HUGE!
Hamza: If you could go back in a time, to the time when you were just getting started,
what advice would you have given to yourself if you could only relay one piece of advice
to your former self?
If I could able to go back in the time, Id want to spend the time of my childhood once again
with my friends. But thats not going to happen.
I would probably have said to me:
Success in life can never be an accident. It is the result of right decision at the right time.
Champions are not the people who never fail, but the people who never quite. Do something
today that your future self will thank you for.

Faizan: Ok final question! What advice do you want to give the new generation about
starting their own venture or about the life?
Make your own future! Create something that is bigger than yourself. Nobody is going to
give it to you; you have to work for your dreams. The happiest people dont have the best,
they just make the best of everything for themselves. There is nothing like guaranteed
success. In order to win big you have to take the risks. You will find that nothing great
just happens on its own, you can't sit on the sidelines and wait for it.
My advice to the young generation is not to go for the money. Money cant buy happiness. If
you want to be the successful entrepreneur, you should look for the problems that a common

man is facing right know and tackle them with your ideas. And then on that day you will get
the thing that youve dreamed of. As one said and I quote

A startup is a human institution designed to deliver a new product or service under

conditions of extreme uncertainty.
