Mr. Church
In 1965 Los Angeles, cancerstricken Marie and her tenyear-old daughter Charlotte are
shocked to learn that one of
Maries former lovers has hired
a black cook named Mr. Church
(Eddie Murphy) to take care of
them during her illness. Over
the next 15 years, Mr. Church
becomes a father figure to
Charlotte, and he even takes
her in when she gets pregnant
from a one-night stand.

RESIDENT PROFILE
In 2013, we bought our Sun City Festival home in anticipation of our son attending Northern Arizona University in
the fall of 2014. We hail from New Hampshire and were
looking for a warm, dry climate during the winter and we
havent been disappointed with Arizona.
We chose Sun City Festival over other communities because we had only one thought after touring the community, This is what retirement should look like. The neighbors in our community were so welcoming and friendly, we
felt at home immediately.

Exercise For
Your Brain
We have all heard about the many benefits of weight/resistance training. Lifting weights just three times per week can
increase muscle mass and muscle strength, boost metabolism, maintain bone density, minimize risk of falls, etc. And, based on more recent
research, twice-weekly sessions of weight training can boost memory and brain
function.
As we age the white matter in our brains develops holes or lesions. White matter
is critical to connect different brain regions and to pass messages between them.
Over time the white matter shrinks and the lesions can multiply and can also get
larger. As expected, more and larger lesions cause a loss in cognitive abilities and
in memory.
In research done at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, generally
healthy women between the ages of 65 and 75 who performed a supervised weight
training program twice per week showed less brain shrinkage and less damage to
their white matter. In addition, the women showed improved motor skills in walking
after consistent weight training.
Additional research done at Georgia Institute of Technology demonstrated improved
memory after strength training. Researchers
showed 46 people a series of 90 photographs.
Afterward, half of them did weight training and half
did not. The next day, when shown 180 photos including the 90 originals, the people who performed
weight training exercise remembered about 60
percent of the photos. Those who did not exercise
remembered only about 50 percent. One of the
differences noticed between the groups was the
level of the hormone norepinephrine. Released in
response to exercise, norepinephrine levels were
higher in those who had performed weight training
and did better on the memory tests.
The good news is a large commitment of time is not necessary to make a difference.
In the research mentioned above, and in other studies, weight training just twice
per week was an adequate amount. Lifting just two times per week at 80 percent of
maximal effort will induce improvements in memory, cognitive function and motor
skills.
The muscles and the brain get pumped up the same way. So head to the gym a
couple times each week and start lifting some weight.
