Circulatory System
Pumps Blood and Nutrients Through
the Body
The 2 Systems
Lymphatic- carries lymph (white blood cells)
Open system
Cardiovascular- carries blood
Closed system
Contains heart, veins, arteries, capillaries, and blood vessels
Consists of the heart and the blood vessels running through the entire body
Arteries carry blood away from the heart; the veins carry it back to the heart
Major Tissues
Muscle tissue - enables us to move certain parts of our body makes up the
heart
Major Cells
Red blood cells- carry oxygen and carbon dioxide to different places
in the body
White blood cells- help the body defend itself against infections and
diseases, discovers and defends against germs and bacteria
Platelets- small blood cell fragments, helps the blood to clot
especially in an injury
Muscular System
Voluntary and Involuntary Muscles
Throughout the Body
Major Tissues
Skeletal muscle: Carries out everyday body movements,
support the body, and maintains the posture of the body.
Smooth muscle: Responsible for the contracting the hollow
organs, such as blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, and the
bladder
Cardiac muscle: The muscle of the heart, it is self contracting
and must maintain a rhythmic contraction
Muscular and
Circulatory
How do they work together?
Construction Plan
We will have two water bottles representing both chambers of the heart. We will have clear pipes coming out of
the bottles representing the veins and arteries. We will have water to represent our blood. We will use rubber
bands to represent the muscles contracting in our body. The rubber bands will squeeze the tubes and bottle.
This will send the blood back to the bottle, representing the shared function of the circulatory system and the
muscle system, which is to compress the veins to send the blood back to the heart. There will be little beads or
pieces of clay to show the nutrients and that will show the function of the circulatory system, which is to move
nutrients and oxygen to the different organs. The rubber bands can attach to a long piece PVC, which shows the
function of the muscular system, which is to move the body.
Materials List
Bottle - Heart
Water - The Blood
Clear tubes - Veins, Arteries, Capillaries
Rubber Bands - Muscles: different colors represent different muscles
Pieces of clay - the nutrients that the blood is carrying to the muscles
Red- red blood cells carrying oxygen
Yellow- nutrients
