Time: 40 minutes
No. of Students: 20 students
Theme: Management and Continuity of Life
Learning Area: The World through Our Senses
Topic: Our Sense of Touch
Learning Objective: Understanding the sense of touch.
Learning Outcome: At the end of the lesson, student should be able to:
1. Identify the structure of the human skin involved in stimuli detection
2. State the function of different receptors pressure, heat, pain
3. Draw conclusion on the sensitivity of the skin at different parts of the body
towards stimuli
Science concept:
The skin is the sensory organ that detects touch. Receptors are the cells in the
body that detect stimuli. Our body has many types of receptors. Each type of
receptor can detect only one type of stimuli. The parts of our body that contain
receptors are called sensory organs. These receptors have nerves attached to
them.
The receptors present in the skin respond to the following stimuli: pain, heat,
cold, touch and pressure. Touch and pressure receptors detect touch. Touch
receptors detect very light touches but pressure receptors detect a heavy touch
or pressure of something pressure on the skin. Heat receptors detect
temperature that is hotter than normal. Cold receptors detect temperature that
is colder than normal. Pain receptors receive stimuli in the forms of extreme
temperature (hot or cold) or pressure. There are fewer pain receptors in our skin.
Skins with fewer pain receptors are less sensitive with pain.
When the receptors in the skin receive a stimulus, messages are sent from the
receptors to bran through nerves. In the brain, these messages are interpreted.
Different parts of the skin have different degrees of sensitivity. The most
sensitive skin part is finger tip. Hence, people who are blind use their finger tip to
recognize Braille. Skin at the arm is not so sensitive. Thus, paramedic injects
vaccine at our arm.
Science process skills:
1. Classifying. Student can compare and contrast the sensitivity of skin on
different part of the body through the classroom activity carry on in the
class.
.
Scientific attitudes/values:
1. Having an interest and curiosity towards the environment
2. Realising that science is the means to understand nature
3. Being thankful to God
4. Being cooperative
5. Thinking rationally
Students prior knowledge: Student has already learnt about sensory organs and
their functions.
Instructional Tools: Video, Power Point slides, toothpicks, rulers, bandages,
adhesive tape, mahjong paper.
