Survivors of violent crime
are often haunted for several
years and must monitor their
attacker’s jail sentence to be
on guard should the crimi-
nal become parole-eligible. In
recent months, local native
Judy Youngpeter-Sudhoff has
fought tirelessly to keep her
husband and father-in-law’s
killer in prison. Wednesday,
she got a short reprieve from
what she has called her fam-
ily’s “life sentence” of wor-
rying each time the murderer
comes up for parole.

20-year-old Robin Bender.
The convict, who is now
56 years old, will remain in
prison for at least another 6
years.
“A parole hearing was held

for parole again until that

severe economic crisis with
an unprecedented show of
strength last year are finding
it harder to maintain their
solidarity in the face of new
challenges.
Despite U.S. appeals to
refrain from removing stim-
ulus measures too quickly,

ing to slash spending and raise
taxes to avoid suffering the
same fate as Greece, which
found itself on the brink of
bankruptcy last month.
After maintaining remark-
able unity at three previous
summits, the leaders of the
world’s major economies will
come to Canada facing a good

tional years for attempting to
murder Youngpeter-Sudhoff,
who was forced to tie her
husband to a chair. Bender
shot him three times at point-
blank range with a shotgun.
Bender turned the weapon
on the young woman, who
survived the ordeal despite
being shot in the back. Bullet
fragments and bad memories
remain with her but she has
endured with the loving sup-
port of her family, friends and
community.
“Every time he wants to get
out, we go through this,” she
said. “I died that day, too. I
fear opening my door because
you don’t know what’s on the
other side. I don’t trust people
— I’m not the same person. I
had lots of prayer and family
behind me and I just picked
my butt up and moved on. It
took me a year to recover from
my wounds. He shot me in
the back and I have sliced and
diced intestines. I have many
intestinal problems but I have
nine kids and 22 grandkids, so
I’m tickled with my life.”
The parole’s denial until
2016 is expected to be veri-
fied and finalized in approxi-
mately two weeks.

plotting terrorist attacks and
sentenced to 10 years in jail
today in a case that highlights
concerns about Westerners
traveling to Pakistan to link
up with al-Qaida and other
extremist groups.
Prosecutors said e-mail
records, documents and wit-
ness statements proved the
men from the Washington,
D.C., area used the Internet to

CLEVELAND (AP) —
Dean Heisey is focused.
On this beautiful June day,
Heisey moves his metal detec-
tor back and forth over farm-
land in Ashtabula County, hop-
ing for a signal.
Tweeeeet. The machine
emits a high-pitched tone that
almost sounds like a flute.
He gazes at the detector’s
screen and cuts a circle in the
sod with a short shovel. He then
dips to his knees, which are
protected by pads, and pulls out
a 1942 “wheat” penny.
The find doesn’t faze him.
He drops it into the cloth pouch
on his belt, replaces the sod and
continues his quest.
Heisey and the other
members of the North Coast
Historical Recovery Association
are treasure hunters.
They scour fields, farms
and parks looking for trinkets
that cause their metal detectors
to cry out, excited about their
finds.
Sometimes it’s an old pull-
tab from a beer can. Or an old
Matchbox toy car, like the one
Heisey later found in Ashtabula.
Or a piece of aluminum siding.
But once in a while, it’s
a treasure like a gold ring, a
pocket watch or rare coins.
It’s these relics that club
members share every second
Tuesday at the First Baptist
Church of Painesville. The
nearly 40 club members have
friendly competition for the
best find of the month.
At the May meeting, some
of the best finds were a copper
nickel, an Indian head penny
and a 1905 Barber dime.
The element of surprise is
what makes Heisey so devoted
to detecting, which he has been
doing for 12 years.
“The biggest thing is being
surprised by what comes out of
the ground,” said the 58-year-
old Madison resident. “Finding
old artifacts is a lot of fun.”
Their discoveries were made
anywhere they could get access
and permission to use land, such
as beaches, local parks and old
picnic areas.
The club was formed in
1989. Members come from
across the region, from the
West Side of Cleveland to as far
away as Pennsylvania. Annual
membership fees range from
$20 to $30.
Heisey, who has been a mem-
ber for 12 years, is now the club’s
“Hunt Master,” responsible for
finding places for the hunts.
“Picking a site requires
research,” said Heisey, the man-
ager at Geneva State Marina.
“Other times it is just based on
whatever sites you run across.”
Some people even go as far
afield as England to find their
treasure.
“You can find tour groups
over the Internet,” Heisey said.
On one trip to England,
Heisey found Roman and gold
coins, clothing and artifacts in
a farm field. England is an ideal
hunt location because whatever
the hunter finds that is of signif-
icant value, the British govern-
ment will pay for. The hunter
and the owner of the land where
it was found both get money.
Heisey almost never sells
his finds.
“I hold on to them because
they become more valuable
with time,” Heisey said.
His favorites are Civil War
items and an 1896 William
McKinley campaign token.
“The older the better,” said
Heisey.

a diamond bracelet worth
$7,200.
Metal-detecting equipment
can run anywhere from $1,000
to $1,200. Besides the detector,
what a treasure hunter needs is
patience.
“People usually get frus-
trated with it the metal detec-
tor,” Heisey said. “Then the
machines end up on eBay.”
Heisey knew nothing about
metal detecting when he joined
the club. Club members taught
him.
The same was true for club
President John Perkovich, who
joined the group eight years
ago. “I didn’t have any experi-
ence prior to this except for
once or twice when I was a
kid,” the 45-year-old Mentor
resident said. “But it was always
in the back of my mind to find
things.”

that may change as the $5
billion banana industry
slowly comes to terms with
greener forms of production.
Historically, growing the
world’s most popular fruit
has caused massive degrada-
tion of rainforest land across
the tropics, spread noxious
chemicals throughout for-
merly pristine watersheds,
and poisoned and exploited
farm workers.
“Banana plantations were
infamous for their environ-
mental and social abuses,
which included the use of
dangerous pesticides, poor
working conditions, water
pollution and deforesta-
tion,” reports the Rainforest
Alliance, a New York-based
non-profit that has been
working to improve worker
and environmental condi-
tions in the industry since
1990. “Pesticide-impregnated
plastic bags, which protect
bananas as they grow, often
littered riverbanks and beach-
es near banana farms, while
agrochemical runoff and ero-
sion killed fish, clogged riv-
ers and choked coral reefs.”
Also, the proximity of hous-
ing to banana fields, coupled
with lax regulations for pesti-
cide handling, led to frequent
illness among workers and
people living near the planta-
tions.
But help is on the way,
largely thanks to the pioneer-
ing work of the Rainforest
Alliance, which certifies as
sustainable those banana
farms and plantations that
meet certain criteria for
responsible farm manage-
ment set by the Sustainable
Agriculture Network, a
coalition of non-profits striv-
ing to improve commodity
production in the tropics.

might ask: How do you think
the real court will decide?
That was more than a
decade ago, when Kagan
was a young professor at the
University of Chicago Law
School. Now the nation’s first
female solicitor general and
nominee to become the 112th
Supreme Court justice, she
is poised to help decide
herself.
Kagan’s time in the class-
room — four years at the
University of Chicago and 10
as a professor and then dean
at Harvard Law School — is
an unlikely topic for the law-
makers who will grill her dur-
ing confirmation hearings that
begin Monday. But Kagan
herself brought up teaching
the last time she faced law-
makers’ questions.
During her confirmation
hearing for solicitor general
she was asked about her lack

collapsed during Senate tes-
timony last week, apparently
from dehydration.
He is seen as ablest to
pick up the counterinsurgen-
cy battle plan exactly where
McChrystal is leaving off.
Petraeus was McChrystal’s
boss as head of U.S. Central
Command in Tampa, Fla.,
where he was already keeping
tabs on the campaign, with
frequent visits to Afghanistan,
neighboring Pakistan and
Washington.
“He’s already completely
up to date on the intelligence,
knows the political and mili-
tary actors, and understands
the region,” says John Nagl,
president of the Center for the
New American Security.
“He’ll have the support of
the troops,” says Mansoor.
“He can just roll up his sleeves
and get right to work.”
Over the past two years at
Central Command, Petraeus
has fostered what’s been
described as a good work-
ing relationship with Afghan
President Hamid Karzai. He
knows Afghanistan’s U.S.
ambassador, former Gen.
Karl Eikenberry, from their
years together in the army.
Also important, Petraeus
with their budget woes are
likely to lay off tens of thou-
sands of state workers.
Wednesday night by Majority
Leader Harry Reid and would
cut about $8 billion from
a state aid package dearly
sought by the nation’s gover-
nors and almost $2 billion in
recissions of unspent stimu-
lus and defense money.
The grab-bag measure
would extend unemploy-
ment benefits, provide cash
assistance to state govern-
ments and extend dozens of
tax breaks sought by business
lobbyists. It includes disaster
aid, $1 billion for a youth
summer jobs initiative and an
extension of a bond program
that subsidizes interest costs
for state and local infrastruc-
ture projects.
Reid, D-Nev., had been
courting Maine Republicans
Susan Collins and Olympia
Snowe to provide the critical
votes needed to defeat a GOP
filibuster, and the two sena-
tors were pressing for addi-
tional cuts to the measure.
The pared-back measure
would add about $36 billion
of experience arguing before
the Supreme Court. She told
lawmakers that the communi-
cation skills that had made her
a “famously excellent teach-
er” would help her argue.
It was at the University of
Chicago — before leaving to
work in the Clinton adminis-
tration or serving as dean at
Harvard — that Kagan got
her first experience as a pro-
fessor. After graduating from
law school and working for
two years at a D.C. law firm,
Kagan started at the univer-
sity in 1991.
It was the same year anoth-
er young scholar, Barack
Obama, arrived on a fellow-
ship. The future president
eventually taught three class-
es, including racism and the
law and voting rights. Kagan,
one of the few women on the
faculty, taught constitutional
law, civil procedure, labor
law and — twice — a seminar
on the Supreme Court.
“She never wanted to be a
great scholar,” said Richard
Epstein, a fellow professor.
“She wanted to teach, but with
an eye to something else.”
Kagan taught using the
Socratic method, randomly
selecting a student to quiz
about the cases the class had
read. Kagan would march up
the steps of amphitheater-
style classrooms to get closer
to her students, then proceed

tionship with the White House
as one who took part in strat-
egy reviews of Afghanistan,
Iraq and Iran policies, says
Michael O’Hanlon of the
Brookings Institution. “He
and the president know each
other pretty well right now,”
he said, a personal relation-
ship that was notably lack-
ing between Obama and
McChrystal.
The Afghanistan job is
technically a demotion from
Petraeus’ current post, where
he oversees U.S. military
involvement across the Middle
East, including Iraq and Iran,
as well as Afghanistan and
Pakistan and several Central
Asian nations.
Yet no one who has
worked with him thinks that’s
how he’ll see it. “He’s get-
ting another opportunity to
step into a war at a critical
inflection point,” said Nagl,
a retired Army officer who
worked for Petraeus in draft-
ing the Army’s counterinsur-
gency manual. “So this is by
no means a step down.”
Response to his nomi-
nation on Capitol Hill has
been widely positive, and
he is expected to be con-
firmed quickly by the Senate.

willingness to step back as a
war commander shows “the
measure of a man.”

liminary estimates, which is
the cost of extending unem-
ployment for the long-term
jobless. When the debate
started three weeks ago, Reid
pressed a version that would
have added almost $80 bil-
lion to the deficit.
But Snowe and Collins
were withholding support,

“It’s clear that a great deal
of progress has been made
and I’m pleased with that,”
Collins told reporters.
“They’re responding to
some of the issues. We just
haven’t finalized anything,”
Snowe said.
The measure includes
many items popular with
lawmakers in both parties,
including several items con-
sidered as must-do, includ-
ing the further extension of
unemployment insurance
for people who have been
out of work for more than
six months, reversing a 21
percent fee cut imposed last
week on doctors particpat-
ing in Medicare and renewing
dozens of tax cuts.

way beyond what was in the
casebook, and ask you hypo-
thetical questions that really
made you think,” said Susan
Epstein, who took Kagan’s
labor law class.
She was also particularly
skilled at getting the answer
she wanted, former students
said. Some professors would
just say “interesting point”
after a student answered incor-
rectly, said Linda Simon, who
took three of Kagan’s classes.
Not Kagan: She could take a
student back half a step and
get them to her answer.
“That came out of her
being a really good listener,”
Simon said.
Students who did excep-
tionally well in her classes
often got a personal note after
finals.
“Congratulations once
again on a great exam per-
formance,” she wrote in a
1994 letter to Mary-Rose
Papandrea, now a professor at
Boston College’s law school.
“Just think what you could
have done had you attended
one or two more classes.”
Students gave Kagan high
marks on evaluations, and
in 1993 graduating students
gave her a teaching award.

bench in Grand Forks, ND
when I knew our trip was
over. We came into the state
on the southwest and spent a
week touring our way east. We
camped in the North Dakota
Badlands; we saw three white
bison at the National
Buffalo Museum
in Jamestown and
snapped photos of
a pink sunset on
the water at Devil’s
Lake. When we got
to Grand Forks, we
were as far east as we
could get in North
Dakota. Dan and
I sat on the bench
watching the kids
swing. I couldn’t

We’d explored 48 states. The
year was up, the money was
spent. The only thing left to
do was drive home. It was

hours from home. I was in
limbo, not wanting it to be

Donovan injury-time goal
puts US in 2nd round

PRETORIA, South Africa
— This moment might be
celebrated for decades.
Once again, the United
States was minutes from
World Cup elimination.
Once again, soccer’s fleet-
ing moment in America had
come and was about to go.
And then, in a way that
usually only hap-
pens in movies,
Landon Donovan
stormed up the
field in breathtak-
ing dash, deter-
mined to make sure
this chance would
not be lost.
He passed the
ball ahead to Jozy
Altidore, who squared it to
Clint Dempsey. His shot
bounced off the goalkeeper
and rebounded to Donovan.
Instinctively, he slammed the
ball into the goal.
Noise started coming from
every direction at old Loftus
Versfeld. Donovan spun, his
jaw dropped and his face
filled with wide-eye glee. He
sprinted to the corner flag,
sliding headfirst as if he were
Pete Rose, and teammates
piled on one after another,
with Michael Bradley som-
ersaulting onto the top, like a
human cherry on the celebra-
tion cake.
Thousands of red-white-
and-blue clad fans who had
traveled halfway around the
world will talk about this for
the rest of their lives. Donovan
won’t forget this night for the
remainder of the his days, this
1-0 victory over Algeria on
Wednesday night that vault-
ed the United States into the
knockout phase of the World
Cup and set off an explosion
of joy in every corner of the
country back home.
The significance of his
goal, of this victory, cannot
be overstated for a developing
soccer nation still yearning
to prove it belongs. Former
President Bill Clinton went
to the locker room to con-
gratulate the players after yet
another in a series of late
goals by a team known for
final-minutes drama.
“It’s the biggest win we’ve
ever had for so many rea-
sons,” U.S. Soccer Federation
president Sunil Gulati said.
“One is obviously the fashion
in which it happened. Second
is the overcoming of adversity
— not just today but given
what happened the last game.
And three, most of the country
was tuned into the game.”
One could quibble with him

WASHINGTON — Stephen
Strasburg set another strikeout record
and also suffered his first major-league
defeat.
The hard-throwing right-hander
struck out nine and allowed nine hits
and one run over six innings in his
fourth start but Washington lost 1-0 to
Kansas City on Wednesday.
On the last batter he faced,
Strasburg (2-1) got his 41st strikeout.
That broke a record held by Herb
Score, who fanned 40 in his first four
major-league starts for Cleveland in
1955. For the third time in four starts,
he did not walk a batter and lowered
his ERA to 1.78.
Brian Bannister (7-5) allowed five
hits and walked two in six innings for
the Royals, who snapped a 5-game
losing streak.

DENVER — Pinch-hitter Jason
Giambi’s 2-run homer off Jonathan
Papelbon capped a 3-run rally in the
ninth inning and Colorado overcame an
off night by ace Ubaldo Jimenez.
Giambi sent a 1-0 pitch into the
right-field seats. Ian Stewart had tied
it at 6 with a leadoff drive against
Papelbon (2-4), who blew his second
save in 18 chances. Giambi’s shot was
just the second homer by a lefty batter
off Papelbon all year.
Jimenez, who was seeking his 14th
win, was staked to an early 4-run
lead, which seemed safe considering
he hadn’t allowed more than three runs
in a start all season. But he gave up
six runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings
against Boston. Manny Corpas (2-4)
picked up the win with a scoreless
inning of relief.

five runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

was ever more clutch.
“This team embodies what
the American spirit is about,”
Donovan said. “We had a goal
disallowed the other night.
We had another
good goal disal-
lowed tonight. But
we just keep going.
And I think that’s
what people admire
so much about
Americans. And I’m
damn proud.”
His goal came 45
seconds into 4 min-
utes of stoppage time, when
a 0-0 tie would have sent
the U.S. home. Instead, the
American won their World
Cup group for the first time
since the initial tournament
in 1930; they’ll play Ghana
on Saturday for a berth in the
quarterfinals.
Thirty minutes after the
final whistle, Donovan was
in the stands under the inter-
view room and still he could
not speak without choking up.
His faced drained of color, his
eyes filled with tears and his
voice quavering, the almost
always composed Donovan
was overcome.
As a 20-year-old in 2002,
Donovan scored two World
Cup goals and became a star.
But expectations became
crushing in 2006, went he
went scoreless.
With his fourth World
Cup goal, Donovan tied
Bert Patenaude (1930) as the
American leader.
By winning the group, the
Americans set up a favorable
path forward. If they beat
Ghana in a rematch of the
first-round game that knocked
them out four years ago, they
would face Uruguay or South
Korea for a berth in the semi-
finals, a round the U.S. hasn’t
reached in 80 years.
The United States and
England both were 1-0-2 but
the Americans finished first
because they outscored the
English 4-2. Because England
finished second, it will face
3-time champion Germany in
the second round.
When Donovan scored his
U.S. record 44th international
goal and gave the U.S. its
first World Cup win in eight
years, raucous cheers erupted
on the floor of the New York
Stock Exchange and even in
White House auditoriums in
Washington, D.C., according

SEATTLE — Cliff Lee struck out
nine in his second consecutive com-
plete game and Seattle won its sixth
straight.
Rookie Michael Saunders homered
and drove in four runs for Seattle. Lee
(6-3) allowed nine hits and walked none
in his American League-best fourth
complete game this season and 17th
for his career. He lowered his ERA to
an AL-best 2.39.
The 2008 AL Cy Young Award
winner has 76 strikeouts against just
four walks this season, an unheard of
ratio of 19-1. Only one starter since
1901 has had a double-digit figure in
that ratio over an entire season: Bret
Saberhagen, who struck out 143 and
walked 13 for Kansas City in 1994.
Saunders walked with the bases
loaded during Seattle’s 4-run fourth and
hit an RBI double off Randy Wells (3-6)
in the sixth. He hit a 2-run homer in the
eighth, setting a career high for RBIs.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Johnny Cueto
pitched shutout ball into the eighth
inning and Jay Bruce had a 2-run single
in his second straight 3-hit game as
Cincinnati swept the series, salvaging
a .500 6-game road trip.
Cueto (7-2) allowed seven hits,
struck out four and walked two in 7-plus
innings. Francisco Cordero saved his

“That’s probably going to
capture more people’s atten-
tion than if we won the game
3-0 and it was easy,” goal-
keeper Tim Howard said.
“That emotion, that passion

Before the goal, there had

minute; when the rebound
came back to Dempsey, he

Howard started the coun-
terattack that led to the goal
when he knocked down Rafik
Saifi’s 6-yard header and
rolled the ball to Donovan
on the right flank. Donovan
caught up to the ball at mid-
field, took three touches and
passed ahead to Altidore just
inside the 18-yard box.
Altidore’s right-footed
cross was flicked by Dempsey
as he crashed into goalkeeper
Rais Bolhi.
As Dempsey tumbled over
the goalkeeper, the ball rolled
back out. In ran Donovan, who
with a right side-footed shot
from 7 yards sent the ball into
the lower left corner. It was
the first injury-time goal that
lifted a nation into the knock-
out phase since Uruguay’s
Daniel Fonseca scored against
South Korea in 1990, accord-
ing to STATS LLC.

finally played near its best at the tour-
nament and edged Slovenia thanks to
an early goal from Jermain Defoe on
Wednesday at Port Elizabeth.
Defoe scored England’s second
goal of the tournament in the 23rd min-
ute, sending a right-footed volley from
James Milner’s cross past goalkeeper
Samir Handanovic. After two disap-
pointing draws, the English finally got a
win — and some satisfaction.
“This team, this spirit, played togeth-
er and tried together,” England coach
Fabio Capello said. “I am really happy
because I found the team I know. We
now go forward. We can play against
all the teams because the mind is
now free.”
Before the goal, the English players
looked nervous and lacked any fluidity.
But after taking the lead, they domi-
nated and could have scored more.
The loss could have put Slovenia
through but the late American heroics

Holliday hit an RBI single off Kevin
Gregg with two outs in the ninth inning,
handing a win to Chris Carpenter.
Holliday came up with runners on
the corners and lined a full-count pitch
into left field to give St. Louis the
lead. The surging slugger had two hits.
Randy Winn set up Holliday’s hit with
a 1-out single and moved to third on
Felipe Lopez’s hit to center with two
down.
Carpenter (9-1) allowed three hits,
walked four and struck out seven in
eight innings. Ryan Franklin worked the

Shoddy disposal work mars oil cleanup

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — A leaky truck
filled with oil-stained sand and absorbent boom
soaked in crude pulls away from the beach,
leaving tar balls in a public parking lot and a
messy trail of sand and water on the main beach
road. A few miles away, brown liquid drips out
of a disposal bin filled with polluted sand.
BP PLC’s work to clean up the mess from
the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history
already has generated more than 1,300 tons of
solid waste, and companies it hired to dispose of
the material say debris is being handled profes-
sionally and carefully.
A spot check of several container sites by
The Associated Press, however, found that’s not
always the case.
Along the northern Gulf coast, where miles
of beaches have been coated with oil intermit-
tently for two weeks, the check showed the
handling and disposal of oily materials was
haphazard at best.
A mound of oily sand sits in an uncovered
waste container in a parking lot at the crown
jewel of Alabama’s park system, Gulf State
Park. Water from the previous night’s storm
drips out of the bin into a brown pool on the
asphalt.
In Pensacola, Fla., along the road through
Gulf Islands National Seashore, trash bags from
the debris removal hang over the side of big
storage bins.
A waste collection area dotted with numer-
ous bins full of spill debris stands in what seems
like an odd spot: Smack in the middle of the
tourist section in Gulf Shores, Ala., directly
across the street from a seafood restaurant hun-
gry for customers because of a lack of tourists.
Cleaning up a spill is an undeniably messy
job, particularly when crude oil or tar balls are
washing ashore in varying amounts in four states.
The debris isn’t classified as hazardous waste, so
it can be placed in landfills that accept ordinary
household garbage, including table scraps.
Yet Jerry Kidd, doing maintenance work at a
condominium, couldn’t believe it when he saw
a Waste Management Inc. truck pull away from
a collection site in Orange Beach piled with
loose sand, oil-smeared protective gear and oily
boom pulled out of the water. It was trailing pol-
lution of its own.
The company says it is using 535 containers
lined with what amount to huge black trash bags
to collect debris from Mississippi, Alabama and
part of the Florida Panhandle under a contract
with BP. But not all of the bins really are lined,
and liners have failed in others.
“They’re going down the road leading to
the landfill; they take the same route every day.
They’re leaking onto the roads, into the storm
sewers,” said Kidd. “There’s no telling where
it’s going.”
The Alabama Department of Public Health,
which regulates the transportation of such wastes
in the state, said it wasn’t aware of the problem
until contacted by AP.
“This needs to be taken care of, and get these
things sealed tight,” said Pres Allinder, director
of environmental services for the department.
“There’s no point in collecting this stuff if
they’re just going to spread it around.”
Waste Management is taking solid wastes
from the three states to landfills in Vernon,
Ala.; Pass Christian, Miss.; and Campbellton,
Fla. Spokesman Ken Haldin said the company
would be more careful, having drivers check
bins for problems and possibly using a new type
of liner, because of the AP findings.
“It is something we are going to be address-
ing,” he said. “They’re probably isolated situa-
tions, but we are still early in the process with
all this work.”
Despite problems, Haldin said Waste
Management is trying to make sure oil spill
contamination isn’t spread inland.
“There are a whole set of steps we are taking
to make sure this operation is safe,” he said.
Liquid waste, such as oily water left from the
cleaning of oil-blocking booms or the mix of oil
and water picked up by skimmer boats in the
Gulf, is handled separately. The oily residue is
processed for sale where possible and the water
is reused or injected underground.
The amount of waste being generated sounds
staggering, but it’s not unusual in the disposal
business.
”This whole spill is going to be a drop in
the bucket for its impact on landfills,” said Vic
Cullpepper, technical director at River Birch
Landfill, near New Orleans. “A lot of people are
trying to blow this up and say it’s going to be a
problem for landfills, but it’s not.”
BP says 761 tons of crude-contaminated
waste already has been buried at the two land-
fills in Alabama and Florida. Some 13,100
cubic yards of oily waste have been buried in
Louisiana, where the amount is being tallied by
volume instead of weight.
Marlin Ladner, a supervisor with Harrison
County, Miss., is angry about spill waste being
buried in his coastal county, which still is trying
to recover from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The
county could use the dumping fees from the
disposal operations, he said, but there are too
many uncertainties.
“I just don’t think it’s worth it,” he said. “I
just have a problem with BP, in effect, polluting
our beaches, bays and estuaries and then turning
around and hauling that stuff and dropping it
just four or five miles from the coast here.”
BP says no oily material will be sent to the
Mississippi landfill.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Her house smelled like smoke, but

Mary Oravits was elated.
“I’m home! I’m finally home!” the Flagstaff resident said
after being allowed back into her neighborhood Wednesday.
“It’s so exciting.”
Oravits was one of about 1,000 people who evacuated their
homes Sunday after a forest fire started tearing though stands of
ponderosa pine north of the city and rising up the slopes of the
nearby San Francisco Peaks.
“The day that it happened, it looked like it was coming over
here quickly,” Oravits said. “I was really distraught. At first, you
think you’re going to lose everything, which is hard to absorb.”
After three days in hotels, trailers or friends’ homes, hom-
eowners and their families in the northern Arizona city of about
60,000 people began to trickle into the evacuated neighborhoods

After evacuating, they sat on nearby U.S. Highway 89 to
watch the fire, which authorities said was started by an aban-
doned campfire. Stanley estimated flames came within a quar-
ter-mile from her home in the Timberline neighborhood.
“You could see big like, 20-, 30-foot flames,” she said.
“We’re like, ’OK, is that our house?”’
Though some of his neighbors left, Mike Diamond chose to
stay home, knowing that once he left, officials wouldn’t let him
return. Diamond almost changed his mind the next day when
thick smoke blanketed the area.
“Monday afternoon, early afternoon, it got real bad,” he said.
“I was getting ready to bail.”
Diamond said gas was shut off to his home, but firefighters
were stationed nearby, and he felt secure. Things cleared up
enough by Tuesday that he knew it was safe.
“I kinda thought they’d open things up yesterday, but they
didn’t,” he said.
Nearly 1,000 firefighters were battling the 22-square-mile
Schultz fire, and their work was far from over. At least 10 miles
of fire line still needed to be completed, and the blaze was just
20 percent contained. Crews worked Wednesday to improve the
line on the southern flank of the fire to keep it from surging back
toward the city about five miles away.
To secure the line, crews used several helicopters to drop
material to ignite and burn out any forest fuels, said fire spokes-
man Eric Neitzel. Meanwhile, firefighters aided by air tankers
dropping fire retardant were trying to stop its growth to the
north.

NEW YORK — Imagine no cars — or fewer, anyway.
In New York, a two-mile stretch of the FDR Drive parkway
is torn down to open lower Manhattan for parks and plazas,
and bicyclists are given their own lane on the Brooklyn
Bridge.
An elevated highway in Guangzhou, China, is transformed
into a pedestrian promenade, and rooftops are linked by raised
walkways and bikeways.
In Jakarta, Indonesia, traditional bike taxis called becaks
are re-engineered to be lighter and easier to steer.
The three cities and seven others are featured in an exhibit
on environmentally friendly transportation of the future
opening today in New York. The exhibit, titled “Our Cities
Ourselves,” will be at the Center for Architecture in Greenwich
Village through Sept. 11 before traveling to the other cities,
which include Buenos Aires, Argentina; Budapest, Hungary,
and Johannesburg, organizers said.
“We hired 10 architects from cities all over the world to
help us imagine what their cities might look like in 2030 if
we made the cities more human scale, more environmentally
sustainable,” said Walter Hook, the executive director of the
Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, which
organized the exhibit with funding from the San Francisco-
based ClimateWorks Foundation.
Hook cradled his bike helmet in one arm as he provided a
tour of the exhibit.
“We’re essentially trying to send the message that if cit-
ies don’t move in this direction we’re going to be faced with
cataclysmic climate change, because in the developing world
the use of private automobiles is escalating at double-digit
rates,” Hook said.
The cities were chosen because Hook and the New York-
based ITDP have relationships with them, having helped
design bus systems in Jakarta; Mexico City; Ahmedabad,
India, and other locales.
The exhibit includes images and 3D models of urban neigh-
borhoods as they are envisioned in 2030 alongside current
photos of the same neighborhoods.
The Utopian vision of lower Manhattan shows pedestrians,
bicycles and very few cars. Architect Michael Sorkin, who
designed the New York piece of the exhibit, said he thinks it’s
“completely feasible.”
“The streets were laid out by the Dutch in a fundamentally
medieval pattern,” he said. “They’re not made for cars.”
In the New York of the 2000s, Mayor Michael Bloomberg
has won plaudits from alternative transportation advocates for
putting pedestrian plazas in the middle of Times Square, near
Broadway theaters, and in Herald Square, where the Macy’s
flagship department store is located.

Hundreds line up for new iPhone

BERLIN (AP) — Apple Inc.’s newest iPhone was in hot demand
today as hundreds lined up outside stores in Tokyo, Berlin, New York
and elsewhere to become among the first to own the device.
The iPhone 4’s launch began in Japan and moved across France,
Germany and the U.K. before going on sale in the U.S. at 7 a.m. in
each time zone.
Unlike past launches, there were worries about limited supplies
after more than 600,000 people rushed to pre-order iPhones on the
first day they were available, prompting Apple and its U.S. carrier,
AT&T Inc., to stop taking orders for shipment by today’s launch.
On Apple’s website, new orders weren’t promised for delivery until
July 14.
AT&T stopped taking pre-orders entirely and won’t have any
iPhone 4s for people who didn’t reserve them until June 29. That
means people who didn’t place an iPhone 4 order had to line up out-
side Apple stores today in the hopes of snagging one on a first-come,
first-served basis. Apple won’t say whether it believes it has enough
iPhones on hand to avoid disappointing those would-be buyers.
In Paris, 24-year-old shoe salesman Julien Remy went to buy
one during his lunch break, only to learn the store had run out of the
higher-capacity model he wanted.
“Either I’ll look elsewhere or come back later,” he said.
Long lines formed from early morning across the city at Apple
stores and retail outlets across Tokyo.
