The Path

Since arriving in Zambia, I have

frequented a path in the mornings.
Sometimes walking, sometimes
jogging, sometimes runningor
at least trying to runThe other
morning I marveled that this path
has held my attention for so long
four years actually

In the past, I have chosen paths to go

down on a regular basis and then I
have decided after a few times that I
am bored and need to take a different
routeon this path however, each
time I take it, I love it, and when I go
down other paths, I miss this path
the big tall dead tree at about 2.5 km
down the path, the bit of a decline
at the beginning with ruts and rocks
and such, the football field to the
right, the little bridge that goes over
a bit of water in the rainy season
but just over hardened ground in
the dry seasonI wonder to myself

how this iswhy do I enjoy this

path so much? Why do I feel a bit
at home, yet always intrigued that it
isnt just the same old, same old

For me this path means beautiful
sun rises over the African plain
where I find myself humoring the
idea of writing a childrens book
called Good Morning, African
Sun and contemplating the reality
that Gods mercies are new every
morning and fixing my heart on the
truth that, Its a Good Morning!

Let me tell you, Jesse hated this job. And you

would too I imagine, if you had to do it. Jesse was
a chicken plucker. Thats right. He stood on a line
in a chicken factory and spent his days pulling the
feathers off dead chickens so the rest of us wouldnt
have to. It wasnt much of a job. But at the time, Jesse
didnt think he was much of a person.
His father was a brute of a man. Afflicted with
both schizophrenia and alcoholism, he sometimes
terrorized his young son with a knife; he died when
Jesse was 13 years old. Jesses older brother wasnt
much better. He was always picking on Jesse and
beating him up. Yes, Jesse grew up in a very rough
home in West Virginia. Life was anything but easy.
And he thought life didnt hold much hope for him.
Thats why he was standing in this chicken line,
doing a job that darn few people wanted. In addition
to all the rough treatment at home, it seems that
Jesse was always sick. Sometimes it was real physical
illness, but way too often it was all in his head.
He was a small child, skinny and meek. That
sure didnt help the situation any. When he started
to school, he was the object of every bully on the
playground. He was a hypochondriac of the first
order. For Jesse, tomorrow was not always something
to be looked forward to.
But, he had dreams. He wanted to be a
ventriloquist. He found books on ventriloquism.
He practiced with sock puppets and saved his hard

earned dollars until he could get a real ventriloquist

dummy. When he got old enough, he joined the
military. And even though many of his hypochondriac
symptoms persisted, the military did recognize his
talents and put him in the entertainment corp.
That was when his world changed. He gained
confidence. He found that he had a talent for making
people laugh, and laugh so hard they often had tears
in their eyes. Yes, little Jesse had found himself.
The history books are full of people who
overcame a handicap to go on and make a success
of themselves, but Jesse is one of the few who didnt
overcome it. Instead he used his paranoia to make
a million dollars, and become one of the best-loved
characters of all time in doing it!
Yes, that little paranoid hypochondriac, who
transferred his nervousness into a successful
career, the wonderful, gifted, talented, and nervous
comedian was Jesse Don Knotts (July 21, 1924
February 24, 2006). His portrayal of Barney Fife on
the 1960s television sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show,
was a role which earned him five Emmy Awards,
still a record for the most Emmys given in a single
category.
Take it from Barney Fife (or Mr. Furley of Threes
Company), always pursue your dreams!

encouraging artists to both keep me focused for the jog

and focused for the day.
It means greetings, Mwashebukeni mukwai (good
morning to a friend), mwabombeni mukwai (good
morning to ones working in the field), stopping for a
handshake and a chat or a bakalamba (respected one)
waiting for me on the path to walk and talk with me
about the Freedom Fighters in Zambia
Its the route Ive taken with friends or alone, on
bicycles through sandy pits and huge mud puddles or
by foot when I was just learning this new place
Ive walked this path with my students so we could
laugh and play games and sing songs with youngsters
under the bright afternoon sunits taken me to
church, to a funeral, to math lessons with local kids,
to English lessons with adults from the nearby village,
Ive acquired a backpack full of mangoes and tomatoes
(on different occasions) when traversing this path, Ive
enjoyed learning new Bemba phrases from friends, and
getting to spend moments with young Zambian ladies
jogging with me just to enjoy one anothers company.
Its where I have lifted so many of my family and
friends up to my Father in prayer as I start any given
day
This path is the place where I go when my heart is
breaking, when my hopes are dashed, when the plans I
have made seem to be falling apartand it is the place
where I have found my heavenly Father to gently remind
me that not even for one moment has He forsaken
methat no matter what I am feeling, experiencing, or
wishing I wasnt experiencing, He is good, all the time,
His goodness is not dependent upon my situation, but
upon His unchanging character, love and faithfulness
and I can TRUST Him
Its a moon setting and sun rising path, a trust path,
an adventure path, a joyful path, a let my tears fall path,
a path of friends and of solitude, a steady-as-the-sunrising-every-morning path and a path that changes
with the seasons and the people that come in and out of
my life, a simple path, a run-faster, push-harder path, a
stop-and-enjoy-the-moment path
This path holds the unexpected invitation to ride in
an oxcart with multitudes of children and the routine
chat with the grandma waiting at the corner for a ride
to town to work at her nieces shop each morning.
I am grateful for this path, for the many memories
that it holds and for the reminder that in my experience,

this path is much like real life. I have chosen a path.

Sometimes it is rocky and rutty and filled with tears
and questions and sometimes I marvel as the sun shines
brightly lighting up the day and filling my heart again
with hope. I am blessed to be on this path. I couldnt and
I wouldnt choose another path. I may not always feel
ready, but I am looking forward to the experiences this
path will lead me to in 2017.

Bummer turned blessing...

One
Thursday
morning
a
few
weeks ago, one of my
colleagues informed
me that my car (Ivory)
had been broken into
and the radio, speakers
and battery stolen. I
kinda sat there a bit
shocked.
Hmmm...now
what to do?
Another colleague
was so helpful in
getting the police
report filed and the battery replaced. Someone else
helped with getting a window. All in all, I was amazed at
how the Lord showed me that He was caring for me.
I try my best to hold this vehicle loosely and share
it as it is needed. It felt almost as if He was saying, dont
worry Shirley, Ill take care of this, and He did. Within
just a few days the window and battery were replaced
and the car was able to be used by a friend to go to
Lusaka for exams!
I decided against getting another radio so Ivory
wouldnt be a target again!
