AssignmentDescription:Simulatingtheinterviewprocess,weweregiven30minutestocreateawritten
descriptionofhowIasanadministrator,cultivateapositiveschoolculture.
AstheschoolleaderatFuenteNuevaCharterSchool,theestablishmentofourschoolculturecomesfirst.The
cultureofoureducationalteam,andthatourstudentsandparentsexperiencedaily,alltietogethertomake
Fuentewhoweare.Webegineachyearwithsettingtheintentionthatweareacommunityoflearners.Fromthe
studentstotheprincipal,weareallinvolvedinthelearningprocess,takingrisks,makingmistakesandcreating
newvisionsbasedonourexperiences.ItisthroughthiscollectiveunderstandingthatIcanmoveFuenteNueva
forwardinourpursuitofexcellenceeachyear.
Establishinghighexpectationsfortheeducationalteamiswherewebegineachyear.Onthefirstdutyday,
everymemberofourteam,fromthecustodiantotheteachers,gatherstoreviewourschoolsMissionand
VisionStatement.Thehelpsustorememberwhywedo,whatwedoeachday.Theteamthenreviewsan
establishedStaffMissionStatementinwhichwebreakaparttheschoolsmissionintoavisionofwhatcarrying
outthemissionlookslikeinourdailywork.TheStaffMissionStatementthengoesontodescribehowwe
supportoneanotherasindividuals,acknowledgingthatwearebotheducatorsandmothers,daughters,wives,
etc.Ourpersonalneedsarevalidatedasfoundationaltoallowingustoperformoptimallyasaneducational
team.Thismeans,thatweencourageeachothertotakecareofourselvesfirst,sothatweareavailabletothen
takecareofourtremendousresponsibilitiesasteachers.
Theteamthengoesontoestablishnormsofhowwecommunicateandconductourselves.Throughthese
discussions,teammemberscanaskforwhattheyneedtofeelheardandsupported.Astheyearprogresses,we
oftenlookbackonthesenormsasacompassforhowtonavigateoneofthemanychallengesthatarise.Open
andclearcommunicationisfosteredbygivingeachofusasharedlanguagethatwecanrefertowhenadversity
exists.Astheprincipalwhilereferringtoournorms,Icansharemyownmistakesandgiveothersthe
opportunitytohelpmereflectonawayforward.
Thisworkdonebyourteamofeducatorsthensetsthetoneforlearningintheclassrooms.Theeffectivenessof
ourcommunicationandcollaboration,hasadirectimpactonstudentlearning.Teacherstaketheclimateofhigh
expectations,risktaking,andclear,opencommunicationintotheirdailyinstructionasleadersoftheir
classrooms.Insuchaclimate,studentscanthriveandlearningissuretofollow.Asweallknow,whenastudent
feelssafeandmotivated,theyareengagedandlearning.WhenthereisanewteacheratFuenteNueva,thisis
alwaysatthecoreofmyexpectationsforteacherdevelopment.Theestablishmentoftheclassroominwhich
learningiscelebratedthroughbothoursuccessesandchallengesleadstoaclassroominwhichstudentsare
meetingorexceedinggradelevelexpectations.
Finally,theparentscompletethecommunityoflearnersatFuenteNueva.Whetheritbethroughourparent
organizations,volunteeringintheclassroom,orsupportingtheirchildseducation,weencourageparentsto
acknowledgethelearningpaththattheytooareon.
Asacommunityoflearners,weestablishtheclimatetheencouragessuccess.Thekindofsuccessthatis
measuredbygrowthandprogress.ItiswithgreatenthusiasmthatIgettoleadthisprocess.
