Please note the age change for the summer. Children ages
4 yrs old through those entering 2nd grade are dismissed
during the Hymn of Preparation, meeting the teacher at the
top of the stairs to proceed downstairs to room L2 for a
worship experience that is age appropriate. Parents must
pick up their children immediately following the worship

What Need Is God Showing Us?
St. Paul's University, a seminary in Limuru, Kenya, needs qualified lecturers. The college
is expanding and has a vision for serving the educational needs of Kenya, where 70 per-
cent of the population is Christian. The new business department in particular has a
shortage of full-time staff.
What Is God Telling Us to Do?
God has called the RCA to partner with St. Paul's to help the administration find quali-
fied faculty to teach in its bachelor of divinity and bachelor of business administration
programs and to help St. Paul's become a fully accredited Christian university.
How Are We Doing What God Is Asking?
RCA missionaries Jane and Rowland Van Es Jr. teach students who are either preparing
for ministry in the bachelor of divinity program or preparing for a business career
through the bachelor of business administration program. Rowland has masters' degrees
in economics and divinity and teaches in both of these disciplines at St. Paul's. Jane has a
master's degree in sociology and experience working with primary health care programs.
She coordinates a certificate program in Christian ministry for spouses of theological stu-
dents, teaches sociology and psychology to students pursuing a bachelor's degree, and
assists with the master of arts program in pastoral care and HIV/AIDS.
Who Is Our Partner?
St. Paul's University is an international and ecumenical institution that exists to prepare
men and women for ministry in the Christian church and in society. Its students come
from many countries and church traditions, providing a rich diversity of views and cul-
tures. Originally called St. Paul's Divinity School, the college was founded in Kenya in
1903 by the Church Missionary Society. The school changed its name to St. Paul's
United Theological College in 1955 when the Anglican Church of Kenya, Presbyterian
Church of East Africa, and Methodist Church of Kenya formed a ministerial-training
partnership. The Reformed Church of East Africa joined the partnership in 1973 and the
National Council of Churches of Kenya joined in 1995. In 2007 the name was changed
to St. Paul's University.
Up Close and Personal
Rowland grew up in Taiwan and the Philippines, where his parents were RCA missionar-
ies. He and Jane have spent many years in Africa, serving in Sierra Leone, Malawi, and
the Gambia before moving to Kenya. They have two daughters, Jennifer (born in 1993)
and Michelle (1996), who were both born in Malawi.
