JA:Howdidyoucomeaboutthisextensivetraining?
OB:IcameaboutthistrainingasaresultofthethingsIhadtogothroughintheUnitedStatesandalsobecauseof
mypersonalquestforknowledge.Istartedfromonespecialtytoanother,andkeptlookingforanswers.Ihavea
passionforpatientcareandapassionforcreativity.Whenyouputthattogether,arareopportunityisborn.The
abilitytomakeadifferencebetweensicknessandhealthisoneofthegreatestformsofwealthand
thatdoesn'tstopaslongasyoucontinuetostrivetogetbetter.

Forme,itwasjustacontinuousprocessoftryingtogetbetter,stayingthecourseandfindingthethingsthatreally
definewhoIamandwhatIreallywanttodotomakeadifferenceinpeople'slives.
I'vealwaysbeenacompetitivepersonrightfromchildhood.IattendedSt.Mary'sPrivateSchoolwhereIskipped
4thgradeduetomyacademicperformanceandthenFederalGovernmentCollege,Odogbolu,OgunState,formy
highschooleducation.Inmyfifthyear,I,alongsidesomestudents,wonanationwidesciencequizcompetitionin
thecountryandthatheraldedaquestforprofessionaldominance.Thatmarkedthebeginningofajourneyforme.
Onethatwilleventuallyleadmedownthepathofmedicine.IgainedadmissionintoUniversityofIfe(now
ObafemiAwolowoUniversity)tostudymedicine.Ireallydidn'twanttostudymedicine,butmydad,whowasa
greatman,wantedmetobeaphysician.
WhenIgraduatedfrommedicalschool,ImovedtotheUnitedStateswhereIbeganmyspecialisttraining,firstin
InternalMedicineatStateUniversityofNewYorkDownstateMedicalCenter,inBrooklynwhichwasathreeyear
programme.Followingthecompletionofmyprogramme,IproceededtoEmoryUniversitySchoolofMedicinein
Atlanta,Georgia,foratwoyearFellowshipinnephrologyandhypertension.Followingcompletionofmy
Nephrologytraining,IreturnedtoStateUniversityofNewYorkDownstateMedicalCenterforanotherthreeyears
ofFellowshiptrainingincardiovascularmedicine.Uponcompletionofmygeneralcardiologytraining,Igained
admissionintotheprestigiousYaleUniversitySchoolofMedicinefortwofellowshiptrainingininvasive&
interventionalcardiologyaswellasperipheralvascularintervention,afellowshiptrainingIcompletedwith
distinction.
IthenreturnedonceagaintoStateUniversityofNewYorkDownstateMedicalCenterinBrooklynforyetanother
yearoffellowshiptrainingininterventionalnephrology,dialysisaccesscareandendovascularmedicine.
Altogether,IspenttenyearsofcontinuouspostgraduatemedicaltrainingwhichIlaterfoundoutwas
unprecedented.Icurrentlyspecialiseinsevendifferentareasofmedicine.IamaFellowoftheAmericanCollege
ofPhysicians,aFellowofAmericanCollegeofCardiology,aFellowoftheAmericanSocietyofNephrology,and
aFellowoftheSocietyforCardiacAngiographyandInterventions.
JA:Perhapsyouwouldliketoelaboratemoreonyourpersonalmotivationforthepursuitofthisincredible
professionalexcellence,particularlybecauseNigeriaisnotedinternationallyfortheconflictingprofileofchurning
outconartists,someoftheworld'sbestprofessionals,andineptpoliticalleaders?

OB:Ilearntveryearlyinlifethatagoalwithoutaplanisonlyawishandthatthereisnotestimonywithoutatest.
Theonlytimethatsuccesscomesbeforeworkisinthedictionary.Ialsolearntfrommydadthevalueofhardwork
aswellasperseveranceandnotlettingthemomentsdefineyoubutdefiningthemomentbyembracingthe
challenge.IrememberwhenIwasinprimaryschool,Iwouldbetopoftheclassonmanyoccasions,butmydad
wasneverreallysatisfied.Healwaystoldmetodobetter.Icouldn'tunderstandwhyhewantedmetodobetter
whenIwasscoringaround96percentonaverage.
Oneday,Isummonedupthecourageandaskedhimwhyhewasn'tcompletelypleased.Hesaid,Eventhoughyou
weretopoftheclassscoring96percent,thefactthatyoudidn'tscore100percentmeansthatbasedonthestandard
ofyourschool,96percentwasgoodenough.Iwantyoutogettothepointwhereyoutellyourself'96percentisnot
goodenoughforme'andstarttosetyourownstandards.
Ilearntfromthatearlyagetosetmyownstandard.Thatiswheremymotivationactuallycamefrom.Iamaware
thatsomepeoplegetinvolvedinactivitiesthatdon'tuplifttheimageofNigeriawhichinactualfacthappensin
manycountriesintheworldaswell.However,thereareequallyagoodnumberofpeoplewhohavedoneNigeria
proud.
Forexample,thefirsteverblackneurosurgeonintheUnitedStateswasaNigerian.Themanwhodiscoveredthe
postconcussionsyndromeamongstNFL(U.S.NationalFootballLeague)playersisalsoaNigerian.
Nigeriahasproducedverybrilliantminds,notonlyinthefieldofmedicine,butalsoinscienceandtechnology,
music,artsandinotherfields.Thatisalwaysrefreshingtoseeandhearabout.Ibelievetherearealotofother
youngpeopleinNigeriatodaywhoaredoingmarvelousthingsthatthecountryneedstorecognize.Andthereare
Nigeriansthatwillstilldogreaterthingsthanwehavedone.Weshouldn'tonlyhearaboutthenegativethings
Nigeriansdobutrecognizethegoodthingstheydoaswellbecausethat'saplatformformotivatingtheyounger
generation.
JA:IlearntyouhavethedistinctionofbeingtheonlydoctorintheUnitedStatestoholdspecialistqualificationsin
cardiologyandnephrology.Whydidyoufinditnecessarytoacquirethesequalifications,andwhatdifferenceis
thisgoingtomakeinmanagingheartandkidneydiseases?
OB:Thatisanexcellentquestion.Theheartandthekidneysareverycloselyinterrelated.Welearntthatinmedical
school.Theheartisaveryfascinatingorganaswellasthekidneys.Theheartpumpsbloodalloverthebodyto
supplybasicmetabolicneeds.Twentypercentofthatbloodvolumegoesthroughthekidneys.Thattellsyouwhy
thekidneysareveryimportant.Theheartandthekidneysaresocloselylinked,thatwhateverhappenstotheheart,
affectsthekidneysandviceversa.Thatisamajorconceptemerginginmedicinenowcalledcardiorenalsyndrome
andrenocardiacsyndromebecausewearenowrecognisingtheinterrelationshipbetweenthesetwoorgans.
WhileIwasintrainingatEmoryUniversitySchoolofMedicineasakidneyspecialist(andbytheway,Emoryhas
oneofthemostintenseNephrologytrainingprogrammesintheUnitedStates),Iquicklyfoundoutthatthe
commonestcauseofdeathforthepatientsthatdiedwasheartdiseaseandnotkidneydiseases.Andweweredoing
agreatjobtakingcareofthesepatientsbutultimatelytheydiedfromadiseaseIdidn'thavemuchcontrolofasI
wouldhavelovedto.ThatwasachallengeIhadtoembracebeingsomeone,whosedecisiontobeaphysicianwas
tomakeadifference.Irealizeditwasverydifficultformetomakethatdifference,albeitweweretakingcareof
patientsandtheywerelivinglonger.
SothatsetthestageformetodecideifIwantedtoexplorewaysofbecomingmoreeffective.Istartedtoyingwith
theideaofgoingbacktospecialiseincardiologybecauseIreallywantedtogettothebottomoftheproblem.This
meantanotherthreeyearsofspecialisttrainingincardiology.Iwasinitiallydiscouragedbysomeofmyfriendsat
thetimewhofeltIwasspendingtoomuchtimestudying.Butforme,thevalueofknowledgeisworththetimeone
spendsinacquiringit.Andthereisneveratimethatistoolatetoacquireknowledge.
Mytrainingincardiologyaswellasnephrologygavemea360degreeviewofapatientwithaneartotalapproach
totheirdiseasestate.Ithinkitputsmeinabetterpositiontoactuallytreatthesepatients.IrealizedquiterecentlyI
wastheonlyonewithsuchformaltraining,holdingcertificationsinbothfields.Icurrentlyholdcertificationsinsix
differentspecialtiesinmedicine.

JA:AsapracticingphysicianinMississippi,whatsimilaritiesandorcontrastswouldyouliketomakebetweenthe
localpopulationandNigeria,lookingatcardiovasculardiseasesfromthestandpointofpublichealthandtheir
preventionandmanagement?
OB:Iwillstartwiththesimilarities.ThenortheasternstatesoftheU.SincludeNewYork,NewJersey,Maryland,
Vermont,Pennsylvania,etc.ThesoutheasternstatesincludeLouisiana,Alabama,Mississippi,NorthCarolina,
Floridaandothers.ThesouthbearsresemblancetoNigeria.Ithinkthatprobablystemsfromthehistoryofslavery.
ThesouthernpeoplehaveadeeprootedculturelikewehaveinNigeria.Theirfoodsarekindofsimilarandtheir
utilizationofhealthcareisnotquitelikeyouhaveinthenortheast.Therearestillinherentmythsthatphysicians
havetonavigatewhiletreatingthesepatientsespeciallyintheblackcommunity.Thesouthernsoulfood,even
thoughtasty,canbeunhealthyattimesfromthecardiovascularstandpointbecauseofthefatandhighsodium
contentwhichpredisposestohypertensionandheartdisease.Butthereisnodenyingthesouthernhospitalityand
thewarmthofthepeople,justlikeNigeriansgenerallyare.

Thebigdifferenceistheobesityrateinthesoutheast.Theyhavesomeofthehighestobesityratesinthecountry.
MississippiusedtohavethehighestobesityrateintheU.S.Notsurewhatthestatisticsarenow,butit'salmost
approaching40%.
IwouldarguethatourobesityrateinNigeriaisontheriseaswellbecauseofthewesternizationofourdietand
lifestyle.Manydecadesago,thereweren'tasmanycarsinNigeria.Peopletrekkedandwalkedwhichwasgood
exercise.Thereweren'tasmanyelevatorseitherbutit'snotuncommonnowadaystofindprivate3storeyhomes
withelevators.Peopledon'tliketowalkorexercise.Whenyouliveasedentarylifestyle,youareatincreasedrisk
forcardiovasculardisease.HencecardiovasculardiseaseinNigeriamaybefastbecomingclosetowhatyouhave
inMississippi.
Cardiovasculardiseaseremainsthenumberonecauseofdeathssincethe1950sandinwomenit'sevenworse.One
womandieseveryminutefromcardiovasculardiseaseintheworldtoday.It'sanequalopportunitydiseasethat
doesn'tdiscriminateonthebasisofsexorrace.Therearemorethanamillionwomenlivingwithcardiovascular
diseaseintheworldtoday.

Whatisalsofascinatingisthatmostmenwouldcall911whentheyarehavingaheartattack.Butawomanislikely
towait20moreminutestocall911.That,asyouknow,isrelatedtomanythings.Yourwife,whomIhappento
knowwell,isaverylovingwomanlikemostwomeninthiscountryandintheworldandtheytakecareof
everyoneinthefamilybeforethemselves.InNigeriawherewedon'thaveaneffectivefirstresponderservice,this
canbequiteatragicsituation.Wedon'thavethenecessarymedicalaswellasancillaryservicestocombatthis
growingproblem.Forexample,Ilearntoneofmyformerteachersat(OAU)IleIfe,whowasacardiologist,
recentlypassedawayfromaheartattackwhenhecouldhavebeensavediftheteachinghospitalhadacardiac
catheterizationlab.
JA:Intermsofmanagement,aretherethingsyouwouldliketoemphasizewithregardtocardiovasculardiseasein
Nigeria?
OB:Yes.Ihavemetwithmyalmamater,UniversityofIfe(OAU)andIhavealsometwithCardiacandRenal
CentreinGbagada,whichisanannexofLagosStateUniversityTeachingHospital.ImetwiththestaffattheCRC.
IalsometwiththeFacultyat(OAU)Ife,wherethereiscurrentlynocardiaccatheterizationlab.Withoutacardiac
catheterizationlab,youcannotdiagnosethemoreacutecardiacproblemslikeheartattacks.Theydon'thavefully
functioningnuclearcardiologyservicestoperformnuclearstresstestingproceduresthathelpdiagnosethesub
acuteheartconditionsthatleadtoheartattacks.Deviceslikepacemakersanddefibrillatorsarenotavailableto
managesomeheartconditions.Patientsneedingdialysiscannotaffordthecatheterstoperformtheseproceduresin
placeswheretheyareremotelyavailable.You'llagreewithmethisisabigproblemforatertiaryandtraining
institutionlikeUniversityofIfe(OAU).However,havingsaidallofthis,Idon'tbelieveindwellingtoomuchon
theissueswithoutprofferingsolutions.Iechothemindsetofbeingsolutionorientedandnotproblemoriented.
AtCardiacandRenalCentre,theyhaveawonderfulfacilitytherefordialysisandcoronarycarepatients,anda
cardiaccatheterizationlab.Butit'ssemifunctionalatthispoint,probablybecauseofbureaucracy.Thesearesome
oftheproblemswehaveinNigeria.It'snotthatwedon'thavethecapacitytoputtheinfrastructuresinplace,but
afterweputtheinfrastructure,therehastobeatransferofskillsandknowledge.Thefirstmajorlaboratoryand
diagnosticscentreinLagoswasputtogetherbyIndians,notNigerians.
Wehavethetechnicalskills,theknowledgebase,andthepatientpopulationbuttherehastobeawaytofacilitate
skillsandknowledgetransferfromdoctorswhohavelearnttheskillstomanagetheseconditions.Withoutthat
happening,weareonlyashellofourselves.Currently,thereisprobablyonlyoneInterventionalCardiologistin
Nigeriaoratthemosttwo.Thatisgrosslyinadequatetotakecareofpatientsinthevaryingstates.
Wehavetorisetogetherasanation,boththeprivateandpublicsectors,andputhealthintoconsiderationbecause
healthiswealth.LifeexpectancyinNigeriaisprobablyaround52.IntheUnitedStates,itisaround78.Ifalotof
Nigeriansarenotlivingbeyondtheirearly50s,ittellsyoutheworkforceisshrinking.
Ilearntawhileago,ifyouwanttogofastyougoalonebutifyouwanttogofar,yougotogether.
JA:WhatdoesNigerianeedtodo,atleasttostoplosingitstrainedmedicaltalentstoforeigncountries,andatbest
tobeabletoattractNigeriansabroadwithyourtrainingandexperiencebacktohelpliftclinicalpracticeandthe
overallhealthcaredeliveryinNigeria?
OB:Toanswerthatquestion,youhavetogettotherootoftheproblemandfindoutwhypeopleleavethecountry.
Idon'tthinkyouhavealotofpetroleumengineersorbankersleavingNigeriaasmuchasdoctorsdo.Braindrain
disproportionatelyaffectsthemedicalfield.Thequestionreallyis,whyisthatstatisticskewed?
Mostuniversitystudentswanttoworkintheoilorbankingindustry.Thatisn'tsurprising,consideringthatthose
aresomeofthehighestpayingindustriescomparedtothemedicalindustry.Ihaveacousinwhotrainedasadoctor
buthasneverpracticedbeforeandiscurrentlyintooilandgas.
Ihavetriedtointellectualisetheprocessofjustifyingspendingsomanyyearsinschoolwithoutacommensurate
compensatorymechanism.Ifyousendyourchildtomedicalschool,itisnobrainerthatyouwouldhavetospend
moremoneybecauseofthelongeryearsoftraining.Sohereyouareinvestinginthischildbutthereturnonthe
investmentisnotwhatyouwouldexpectcomparedtohiscolleagues.Imustbefairtoaddthatthesituationis
actuallygettingbetterwiththepayratenowbecomingmorefavourable.
Ithinktherootofbraindraininthemedicalfieldis,first,pooreconomiccompensation.Second,thereisnostrong
structureputinplaceforeffectivetraining.Wedon'thavemanytrainingprogrammesfordoctorsinNigeria

comparedtothepopulation.Idon'tknowthestatisticsbutIwouldsayhalfofthedoctorsproducedinNigeriadon't
goontospecialisttrainingandhencearenotconsultants.Thedoctorswhoeventuallygethigherpayaretheonesin
specialisttrainingwhoendupasconsultants.

Ithinkifthecompensationimproves,peoplewillcomeback.Theotherthingissafetyandbasicamenitiesthatare
involvedincomputingstandardoflivingindex.Uninterruptedpower,communication,transportation,wateraswell
asfood.Ifthesethingswhichwetakeforgrantedareputinplace,you'llseeareversemigrationaswellasforeign
investors.It'sagoodsighttoseemoreforeigninvestorsinNigeriathanIdidthelasttimeIwashere.Thatis
refreshingbecauseitsignifiesatrustthatisneededforchange.
JA:Youwereoneofthoseboyswhomisledtheirfriendsinschool.Youplayedhardlikeeveryoneelse,butthen
youwereabletooptimizethelittletimecommitmenttostudyasagiftedstudent,whileotherswhowerenotas
endowedcontinuedtoplayandplay.AreyoustillaplayerorshallIsaydoyoustillfindtimetoplay,given
societalexpectationsandthedemandforyourprofessionalskills?
OB:InschoolIwasn'tanidealstudent.Iwillbethefirsttoadmitthat.Andguesswhat?Ipaidforit.Ididn'tattend
classeswhenIshouldhaveattendedclasses.IguessIwasstillbaskinginyouthfulexuberance.Iwasquiteplayful.
ButasIbecamemorematureandgrewinmycareer,IrealisedthatIwasintosomethinggreat.Ihadarare
opportunitytotakecareofpeopleandachievesomethinggreat.Istartedgettingmoreserious.

IgottoUnitedStatesandrealisedthatyouhavetostudy.Thereisnoshortcuttosuccess.Thereisnoletmy
peoplegogrades.Youarenotstudyingjusttopassanexam,whichiswhatwesometimesdidbackthenin
Nigeria.Youarestudyingtoapplyyourknowledgeyouarestudyingtobefunctional.Ifyouhaveknowledgethat
isnotfunctional,itcannottranslateintoanykindoftherapy.Withinapracticalframework,knowledgehastobe
functionaltobeabletoimpactthecommunityandthenation.
Idon'tstudymuchnaturally,butthefluidityofmymindisalwaysicedinthequietofmythoughts.Myattention
hasatendencytodriftsometimesbutit'smuchbetternow.Iusuallyreadonceandtrytograbasmuchinformation
asIcan.Iguesseveryonehassomethingthatworksforthem.IthinktheproblemstartedwhenIwasinhigh
school.Wewerethefirstsetof6334educationalsysteminNigeria.Ididn'twanttospendanextrayearinhigh
schoolbeforeheadingofftocollege.SoItoldmydadtoenrollmeinG.C.EprogrammeinmyFormFivewhichhe
did.IhadtostudyonmyownasitwasnotallowedforustotaketheG.C.EexamsatthetimeandIcertainlydidn't
wantmyteacherstoknow.IwasinboardingschoolatF.G.C.Odogboluthenhence,notutorialclasses.Istarted
avoidingclassestogointoanuncompletedbuildingwithsomeofmyfriendstostudy.
Whentheresultswerereleased,IhaddistinctionsinallthesixcoursesIregisteredfor.SoIthoughtIwas
invincibleafterthat.IfiguredifIcouldstudyonmyownandstilldosowell,Ididn'thavetoattendclasses.
Lookingback,thatwaserroneousonmypart.Iwouldn'tadviseanystudenttodothat.Thereisalotyoulearnby
beinginclass.Whenyoulearnonyourown,youcan'taskquestions.Theteacheralwaysknowsmorethanyou,
trustme,regardlessofhowsmartyouare.
Idon'tknowcontextuallywhatthetermplayerwhichyoualludedtoinyourquestionmeans,butIcantellyou
rightnow,Iplaythedrumsinchurch.Fromthatperspective,Iamadrumplayer,inthechurchwhereIalsohappen
tobetheAssistantPastor.
JA:Acceptmycondolenceontherecentlossofyourdad,whosefuneralyouarevisitingthecountrytohave.What

OB:Thisisamanthathadahugeinfluenceonme.Mydadwasagreatman.Veryinsightful,andprophetictoo.He
hadahumblebackground.Helosthisdadwhenhewas9monthsoldandgrewupwithhismominthevillage.He
basicallypioneeredhisownlife.MylastnameBaderowasactuallyhisfather'sfirstname.Hechangeditto
immortalizethelegacyofafatherheneverknew.Suchwashisdepthandinsight.
HekeptaskinghismomtolethisunclebringhimtoLagos.Eventually,heconvincedherandhisunclebrought
himtoLagos.Hisuncletrainedhimtobeatailorbuthewasconvincedthatwasn'thiscalling.Heeventuallyraised
moneythroughhawkingsaltandmatchesatObalendebarracksandputhimselfthroughschool.Hewasoneof32
peopleselectedinhisofficetostudybusinessadministrationatUniversityofIfe(thenIbadancampus)andhe

me.Myyoungerbrother,whopassedawayinmyfinalyearinmedicalschoolattendedthesameschoolaswell.
Ithinkthatthekindofeducationandschooloneattendsespeciallyduringtheformativeyearscanbecriticalto
one'scharacterformation,levelofexposureinthefutureaswellasselfconfidence.Someofthosefriendshipsthat
Iforgedthenarestillpartofmysocialsupportsystemtoday.
Mydadalsoinstilledinmetheabilitytoselfbelieve.HeshowedmewhenIwas8yearsoldhowtosetmyown
standards.Iaskedmyselfsometimeinthedistantpast,wheredoIgetmymotivationfrom?Ultimately,my
