1.
(a) Using the behavior of an electric field at a metallic surface find the direction of the
electric field at the inner surface of a cylindrical waveguide. Using this result sketch
the electric field pattern at the inner surface of a cylindrical waveguide for
(i) TE nm mode (ii) TM nm mode.
(b) Follow the procedure in (a) to sketch the magnetic field pattern inside a cylindrical
waveguide for TM 01 mode.

Above equations give the various field components inside a cylindrical waveguide,
for TE mn and TM mn modes. The internal diameter of the waveguide is 2a.
(i)
Rewrite the above field components if the mode of transmission is TE .
(ii)
When the equations in (i) are solved the values for E , E , H and H can be
obtained. We can show that

1. Show that J ' n (k c ) = 0.
2. Derive an expression for the cutoff frequency of the waveguide using (ii) 1.
Also define various parameters in your expression.
(b) Find the dominant TE mode for a cylindrical waveguide using the graph of
J ' n ( x) vs. x.
(c) An air-filled cylindrical waveguide is excited in the dominant TE mode. If the
diameter of the waveguide is 5 cm. find the cut off frequency of the waveguide.
3.
