The Little Prince

Antoine de Saint Exupery
Novel (Fiction)

Characterizing Characters
Who are the main characters?
Give the characteristics of each character.
How relevant are the characters in the story?
The Narrator
The narrator speaks for himself. The narrator is present in the entire story to narrate his
friendship with the Little Prince and the wisdom he learned from him. The narrator is very
attracted to the Prince because of its childlike-behaviour, innocence, and purity of character. He
admits that he likes openness, naivet, and honesty of children rather than pretensions and
blindness of adults, who, according to him cannot see beyond the surface of life. The narrator is
attached with the Prince because he is able to see the truth and importance of things.
The Little Prince
The Little Prince is the main character and protagonist of the novel. The book is the story
of his search for the answers about what is important in life. He is the sole inhabitant of his small
planet together with his one beautiful flower. He leaves his planet to visit other places and finally
lands on Earth. In the Desert of Sahara, he met the narrator and befriended him. The narrator
also tells of his encounter with the Prince and also relates the adventures of the Prince on the
other asteroids that the latter has visited.
The Fox
The fox is another important character in the story, for he teaches the Little Prince the
most important lesson in life, which is the subject of the book. The Fox teaches the Prince that
he should not judge others by what they look like, but what is in their hearts.

II.

In a Nutshell

What is the story all about?

The story, The Little Prince, is all about the journey of a prince looking for something that
he never thought he already have. There is a prince, who left his own planet trying to find
something that will solve his future problem. He visited several places until he landed on Earth
where he found many friends. Then he learned that what he is looking is actually cannot be
seen, because it is located in the heart. He found friend in the person of the narrator, whom he
left later because he returned home to fulfil the responsibility of his relationship with another
friend.

Define and describe the setting. How does it affect the story?
This story happened in Sahara Desert where obviously no human beings inhabiting this
place. This is the place where the narrator lands/crashed his planes. It is also the place where
the Prince found him and wonders why there are no humans on Earth. The idea of being in the
desert gives the reader the scene of being lonely and helpless, since the planes crashed, there
is no help for the narrator. Another setting is the other space, wherein there are lots of
astronomical objects described. Such as the planet of the Little Prince, which is so small that the
reader may visualize it as having a circumnavigating the whole planet within minutes.

Enumerate in a chronological order, the important events in the story.

1. The narrator had a plane crashed in the Desert of Sahara. While he is repairing his plane,
the Little Prince approached him and asked him to draw a picture of a small sheep and
muzzle for the sheep.
2. The Prince started to tell his story to the narrator, starting from the description of his planets,
its feature among others. He also told him the journey he had when he left his small planet.
3. The Prince told the narrator that he visited five planets, and on each planet, he learned
something about life. He met the King, the Conceited man, the Tippler, the Businessman,
and the Lamplighter. He shared the lessons he gained to the narrator.
4. The prince landed on Earth where he met he snake and the fox.
5. The snake told the Prince that whenever the former is ready to return home, the latter will
help him.
6. The Prince encountered the fox, who taught him a lesson about looking at others heart.
7. The fox explained that a person must look beyond the surface to see the real value of thing.
If one looks with ones heart, not just with ones eyes, a person can see the hidden beauty of
an object.
8. The prince was convinced that his flower is special.
9. The Little Prince shared to the narrator these events on his life and told him that he is about
to return home.
10. The prince went to find the snake, which can bite him and return him to his planet.
11. The snake bit the prince and he eventually died. The narrator knew that the prince is already
at his planet.

Take your pick

Who is your favourite character in the story? Why?
My favourite character in the story is the fox. The fox is somewhat a strange person,
whom we might took for granted at first glance because of prejudice, but when we took a long
conversation with him, we can decipher the secrets of his life, his thoughts, and his aspirations.
The fox is a highly intellectual being, giving you only the essential lessons which you can use in
everyday encounter with other people. The fox in the story teaches us not to easily judge others,
as we might misjudge them based on their outside appearance, by their gender, by race, by

religion etc. Instead we should look deeply in their hearts to see their real worth as a person and
as a friend.

What is your most favourite part of the story? Why?

The first part wherein the narrator drew a boa constrictor form the outside and boa
constrictor from the inside for which grown-ups interpreted as a simple hat. Since none of the
grown-ups can interpret that the drawing is a boa constrictor digesting an elephant without
asking the narrator to explain to them what it is, they discourage him from doing such, instead
asked him to devote himself in doing other meaningful activities. This is my favourite part as it
tries to teach us that we, grown-ups, should never be a hindrance in attaining ones full
potentials. Every kid has its own talents, we should be there to guide them, understand them,
help them and encourage them to do more.

IV.

Generating Meaning

Why do you think the author titled it as such? Justify your answer.
The author titled the story as The Little Prince because of its main character. The story
focuses on the journey of a little boy, wherein there is a lesson to be learned of. Aside from this,
he named this as such to encourage more people, especially kids, to read more novels, books,
and fables for which they may learn something useful.

What is the theme of the story? Be specific in your answer.

The story contains several themes dealt with deep secrecy. The novel begins with an
introduction to the main idea of the book. The narrator explains the drawings of boa constrictors
that he made as a young boy. None of the adults who viewed the pictures were able to see the
meaning of the drawings. As a result, at an early age, the narrator discovered that most people
do not look beneath the surface to see the real message, beauty, or importance of a thing. This
becomes the central theme of the entire book. As for this one, one theme that caught my
attention is the responsibility that the Little Prince gave to his relationship with his flower. The
prince teaches that the responsibility demanded by relationships with others leads to even
greater comprehension and appreciation of ones responsibilities to the world. In the story, we
see that the prince left his planet to search for something, but before he left, he attended first to
the needs of his flower as he is responsible to every being in his small planet. The love of the
prince to his flower is very evident as it became the driving force behind the novel. The flower is
very important to the Little Prince as it eventually became the primary reason why the prince
wants to return to his planet. His sense of responsibility toward his beloved flower is the source
of his love for it. When the fox asked the prince to tame him and be tamed, he explains to the
latter that devoting oneself onto other person makes that person more special. That is the same
thing happened to the relationship of the prince to his flower, as they are devoted to each other,
they feel responsible to keep their relationship to be even stronger.

What important lesson have you learned from the story as a whole?
As a teenager, entering into adulthood, I should not be a reason why a child becomes
less interested in what he wants to do. As per my answer in previous question about my
favourite part of the story, Adults/grown-ups must not discourage anyone from doing things he is
good at. We should be an advocate of creativity. We must be a contributing factor why a child
wants to pursue his dream, develop his potentials and attain his goals in life. If we focus on
creating wonderful kids, we are helping our nation to be built. That is the important lesson I have
learned from the story.

V.

Nostalgic Accounts

Can you relate yourself to the story or do you see yourself in any of the characters?
Explain.
I can relate to the character of the businessman because like him, I too sometimes
devoted on things that are less important compared to other stuff. In the story, he is more
focused in counting his wealth while losing focus on something more important to have a
LIFE. If people are always after the money, they tend to give so much attention to that rather
than devoting themselves doing something worthwhile. We must enjoy every minute of every
day, doing things that makes us happy. I can say that what the businessman is doing doesnt
make him happy, instead that makes him very frustrated about losing his wealth. If this
behaviour keeps on, we may lose diamonds while collecting rocks.

Have you had an experience similar to any event in the story? If yes, what
happened? What did you do? Make a brief re-tell of it.
This story is something strange, something unusual and no one expects that I may be
able to talk to a snake or fox or even to a rose. But if we are talking to the course of it, I can say
that I had. Remember the part when the Prince thought that his flower is one of a kind, no one in
the universe looks like it? So, this event is something similar to my experience. When I was a
kid, I always thought that I am special, that I am unique, and that I am the only one in this world
who experienced what I experienced in my life. The problems that I seriously had, with my
family, with my friends and with my schooling all of these I had. But when I entered high school,
I met several kids who shockingly have had the same experience as what I had. Same feeling,
same emotions, same disappointments. I thought I was alone, I thought I am the only one, but
my belief was demolished. The same thing happened when the Prince found out that his flower
has many look-alikes in Earth which it is not the only one.
VI.

Experimenting a bit
Is there a certain part of the story that you would like to change? What would it be
and why?
For me, I would like to change the part where the prince met the Tippler. Given a chance, I
would want to lengthen their conversation and the time they spent together. The Tippler

should have explained why he is ashamed that he is drinking. Because for me, this would
create a big impact especially to teenager to stop or never try to drink alcoholic liquor. I would
want the Tippler narrate how miserable his life was when he started drinking. I want to show
how his life been devastated by his course of actions. It is better if he give advice about the
issue.

If you would be given a chance to give the book a different title, what would it be and
why?
Actually, I really like the title The Little Prince and I would not want to change it, even a
bit. But then again, when asked what could be the other title for it, I will choose The Sheep.
This title seems to be unattractive, and not fully embody the whole story, but for me, this is
somewhat fit to the novel. It is because, the narrator and the Prince first met when the latter
asked the former to draw him a sheep. For which he drew a box and the Prince interpreted it as
a box with a sheep inside. That is the start of their friendship. On some chapters of the book, it
was mentioned thanks to the sheep, the narrator is thanking the sheep because, if not about it,
he will not have a friend just like the Little Prince.

VII. Speak your Mind

In over-all (from the designs, the story itself and the presentation), did you like the
book? Why or why not? Explain
The designs, story and presentation appeals to me well. There is a well-balanced time
frames of past and present for which the reader will be very interested in. The story line is highly
philosophical which I liked most. The author of the book is interested in opening the minds of
others in order to view the world around us in different perspective. And I really loved the
designs, specially the last frame, which gives the reader an imprint of the setting and the mood
of the scene.

Would you recommend the book to your friends, family members, to other people?
Why or why not?
Actually, upon reading the story, I already recommended it to some of my friends.
Hearing their responses makes me more proud that I have contributed something great to them.
I recommended and I will still recommend this story to my friends and family members because
this is a type of story wherein we can gain more wisdom/lessons in life. I highly recommend this
story and all other stories something like this where the reader may get morals instead of having
them read stories on wattpad which focus on love, romance and nonsense stuff, and watch
teleseryes on television.

To what age brackets and type of person do you think could relate to the story well?
Defend your answer.
At first instance, i will say that this story is suited to all readers of all brackets: children,
adult, professionals, wide readers, etc. But having contemplating on the story line, I think this
story will be of very high appreciation if read by philosophy student or person who are highly
philosophical. The designs are great and may be appreciated by kids, and kids-at-heart, the plot

is interesting, and the conversation is awesome, seemingly will be applauded by many. But if we
are looking for an audience that can really relate well in the story, it is the philosophical persons,
not mainly because of the great lines thrown by the characters but also the symbols used. Each
of the persons encountered by the Prince has its own symbolic meaning in real world and could
only be understand better by those who are devoted in interpreting such.
