PART I - Fundamental Facts

Part-I builds basic foundation which is necessary to understand
the world of Human Consciousness and how it works inside a
human being.
Human Consciousness is living mechanism responsible for
human life on earth.
Human Consciousness is at the root of all that is human, which
includes all institutions, all actions, all emotions, violence,
sorrow, celebrations and enterprises of human race.
As you proceed, chapter after chapter, gradually, you would get
realized factual understanding of what is the true driver of life, its
complexities and fundamental basis of resulting human life.
Each chapter of this book contains a set of investigative
questions that you need to answer before moving ahead.
Remember, content that follows the questions has no meaning
unless you have investigated and answered all the questions
that are asked.
Each chapter ends with summary of what you have realized and
one or more questions that you need to explore and answer
before moving on to the next chapter.
Let us get started and understand fundamental building blocks of
human life.

Chapter 1 - A Glimpse of Living

Consciousness
Though Body is a component of life that we experience readily, it
is easy to see that it is not the one that dictates our lives. For
example, we realize that it is not the body that wants prestige or
wants to win a race. We realize that it is not the body that feels
insult, envies someone or wants heaven or moksha.
We quickly realize that there must be something other than the
Body, which is primary driver of our actions and emotions.That
something else is the world of human Mind, it is the world of
Human Consciousness.
Before we could move further, we must first learn how to observe
our own Mind. We must first learn how to see our own
Consciousness live in action.
Why is it important to see what is taking place within the
Consciousness space?
The purpose of this book is not to give you another empty idea
about life or what is living inside you. The purpose of this book is
to give you capacity to witness, for a fact, what is taking place
inside you first hand.
Even advanced readers are encouraged to go through this
observation exercise.
Exercise to witness your Living Consciousness in action
Read following instructions carefully.
1. This exercise will take 5 minutes. It is better to set an alarm
so that you do it for a minimum of 5 minutes.

2. After you have set up an alarm, sit comfortably and close

your eyes
3. After closing eyes, your simple job is to pay Attention to any
sounds that are naturally playing around you. It could be any
sounds, sound of a fan, sound of house hold items, sound of
fridge compressor, sound of birds, cars or any other sounds
that naturally appears around you when you have closed
your eyes.
4. Specifically,
a. Start listening to any one sound with keen Attention (you
can pick up any sound).
b. Keep following the movement of chosen sound very
carefully as you listen to it. Keep following it as a sound
begins, it plays and it ends, followed by an interval,
another sound starts. Try to continuously keep your
Attention at the sounds you are trying to follow.
i.You may notice that there are many sounds playing
around you, you can pick any one sound to follow at a
time.
c. If a sound comes to an end, pick up any other sound that
is playing around and pay attention to movement of that
new sound.
d. Your simple job is to keep your attention at sounds and
sounds alone. If your attention goes somewhere else,
bring it back to any sound that is playing around you.
5. After about 5 minutes of trying to be with sounds and sounds
alone and experiencing what really happened during that
time, you can move on to following questions.
If you have completed this exercise, you just have witnessed a

glimpse of the world of your own Mind. You could now proceed to
discussion below.
If you have not yet completed this exercise, writer strongly
recommends that you go back and complete this exercise before
moving ahead.
Post Exercise Investigation
Let us try to answer following questions and briefly investigate
what took place during last 5 minutes.
Q1 - Were you able to continuously keep your attention with
movement of sounds and sounds alone for 5 complete minutes?
or there were thoughts about your family, your work etc that
kept coming in between?
When we close our eyes and try to be with sounds and sounds
alone, we notice that Thoughts keep coming in between and take
us away from the sound that we are trying to follow.
Now let us investigate what are Thoughts.
Movement of Thought is nothing but movement of our own Mind.
A living Thought is a living piece of Mind in action.
If you could see your Thoughts, you have discovered a way to
witness your Mind live in action. Now, you have a tool in your
hands that you could use to enter the hidden world of Mind.
As we proceed, we would use this tool to investigate the
enormous world of Mind that is living inside and which is
responsible for our lives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By observation of our Thoughts, we could enter the unseen
world of our Mind, the hidden world of Human
Consciousness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During previous experiment, we got a glimpse of a world inside
us that we seldom have observed. It is the world of our own
Mind, the world of our living Consciousness.
How does a child learn a new language? A child first learns
alphabets A, B, C... , and then starts forming words and then
gradually becomes proficient in that language. Similarly, lets
start slowly and discuss the basic infrastructure of Human Mind
and living Human Consciousness.
Let us now investigate fundamental basis on which our Mind, our
Consciousness functions and build a foundation that is
necessary to appreciate the contents of rest of the book.
We all know that we have Memory and it lives with us like our
hands and legs. Let us try to answer following question to briefly
investigate the fundamental nature of Memory.
Q1. Say you are given an empty box and you fill a bunch of nuts
and bolts, some flowers and some thorns in that box. Now, if
someone asks you to take out a tennis ball from that box, can
you take out a tennis ball from that box?
It is a funny request isnt it? You can only take out what you have
filled in that box. As you have not filled tennis ball in that box, you
can not take it out.

10

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our Memory is like a box, we can only take out things from
our Memory that we have filled in the past. We can not take
out anything else from our Memory.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us try to to investigate what is the broad nature of things
that our human memory contains.
Q1. Recall one food item that you ate yesterday? After recalling,
write it down or say it loudly. (Lets call the knowledge that you
recalled Data)
Q2. You could recall what you ate yesterday, does it mean this
information is stored somewhere inside your Memory?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Objects and things that we come in contact with during the
business of living get stored in our Memory. Specifically,
images, sounds, smells, touch and names of objects get
stored in our Memory
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, lets go a little deeper. Let us try to answer following
questions to understand, is there any other kind of information
that is stored in our Memory.
Q1. During previous exercise, you could recall what you ate
yesterday. Does it mean you know how to recall stored
information? Does it mean, procedure of how to access that
information is also stored inside your Memory? (Lets call this
procedure Routine )

11

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whatever Routines or Procedures we use to live our life
are also stored in our Memory. It includes how to talk, how
to walk and how to perform many functions that we perform
either consciously or subconsciously.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lets try to dig a little more deeper by answering following
questions..
Q1. What made you start the action of recalling what you ate
yesterday? If the question was not asked to you, would you even
try to recall what you ate yesterday? (Lets call what started the
action Trigger)
Q2. Would you have started this exercise if the question (Trigger)
was asked in a language that you do not know?
-So it looks like, in this case, first we came in contact with a
Trigger, the Question, then we recognized the Trigger, then we
used a Routine to fetch the information that was part of the
Memory.
It also looks like, we also need knowledge of how to recognize
the Trigger. That also must be part of our Memory for us to
answer any question.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Human Memory contains Data, Routines and Triggers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You must be wondering, what my Memory has to do with my
living Consciousness or with my Mind. Now let us try to
understand, how our Memory is linked to our Mind by a short
experiment.

12

Experiment 1. Close your eyes and recall one food item that you
ate today morning. Do not write it down or say it loudly. Just
close your eyes and recall what you ate today morning.
After you are done with above experiment, move on to the
following question.
Q1. Did a Thought of what you ate in the morning float through
your Mind? Did you also see visual of what you ate as a
Thought?
During previous discussion, we learned that Thought is body of
the Mind. Now, in the previous experiment, we saw that contents
of Thought and contents of Memory that was recalled are the
same.
We have discovered something interesting here. Within human
body, the Mind lives as Memory. Gradually, we would realize how
deep this linkage is.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mind lives as Memory. When there is a Trigger, a piece of
Mind gets recalled and comes alive. Thought is that piece
of Mind that has become alive and is living.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us see how our Thoughts are linked to our actions.
Q1. In the previous experiment, the instruction was just to recall
what you ate in the morning and not write it down and say it
loudly.
But, if now, you are asked to write down or say loudly what you
ate in the morning? What would you write or say?
Q2. Would the contents of what you write or say be same as the
contents of your Thought?

13

We have discovered something beautiful. Go very slowly, this is

extremely important that we understand it correctly.
First, there was a Trigger, a question was asked to you. Then, a
piece of Memory was recalled and became alive and became
Thought. Then, whatever was the content of Thought became
the content of your action of speaking or writing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before every human Action, there is Thought. Before every
Thought, a piece of your Mind, the Memory is recalled.
Your Memory, your Thought and your Action are very tightly
linked. Their contents are same though in different form
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now we have got a glimpse of how our Consciousness is living.
Let us summarize what we have learned so far.

CONTENT of CONSCIOUSNESS

~~
1. What is living?

a. Consciousness is living
2. What is Consciousness?
3. Consciousness is storehouse of Known (knowledge)
a. Content of

b. Some say it is the Mind that lives

i.The Mind and the Known are synonymous

4. What is Known made up of?
a. Known is made of Data, Routines and Triggers

14

i. What is Data?
1. Data is knowledge that is stored in Memory
ii. What is Routine?
1. Routine is stored knowledge of ways of performing a
function, achieving an objective
iii. What is Trigger?
1. Trigger is knowledge that invokes a Routine. A
Routine can be triggered by many Triggers.
b. All the knowledge or Known is part of Memory
c. What is Memory?
i. Memory is storehouse of Known
5. Mechanism of action of Consciousness is Thought
6. What is Thought?
a. Thought is movement around a piece of Known that is
alive at the moment
b. How has a piece of Known come alive?
i. It has been recalled and has come alive in response to
a Trigger. After recall it is now an active piece of
Consciousness
c. At the root of every Thought is a piece of Known.
What is Action of a human being?
d. Before every Action, there is a Thought.
e. Content of Action and content of Thought are same.

15

7. A piece of Known, Thought and Action are very tightly

linked.
8. Knowledge, Known, Memory, the Mind and Content of
Consciousness are synonymous.
9. Matter form of Consciousness is Human Brain
a. Thus, Content of Consciousness, the Known, the Mind
and Human Brain are synonymous
Consolidation Questions and tasks
Q1. List 5 things that you did yesterday, from morning till the time
you went to bed.
Now, can you think of any actions that you performed that did not
have a Trigger that was Known? or did you perform any Routine
that was not Known to you?
Q2. Are content of Consciousness (Triggers, Routine, Data), the
primary basis of what you do whole day?
Q3.If everything is Known (Part of the Content of
Consciousness), is there anything that is Unknown (not-known)?
How do you handle Unknown?
Q4. Observation of Thought as a movement away from Attention
to sounds is an interesting exercise. It gives us an opportunity to
witness our Thought and thus witness our living Mind. Try to do it
often, try to observe what are the contents of your
Consciousness, contents of you living Mind.

16

Chapter 2 - A Piece of Mind - Part I

In the last chapter, you learned to observe your own Thoughts,
and learned basics of living mechanism of Consciousness, that
is Thought and infrastructure of Thinking.
Infrastructure of Thinking is Known and is part of Content of
Human Consciousness .
We learned that the Mind, the Known is Memory and is similar to
a box. This box contains what we have filled in the past.
Now lets get deeper into the question of what is the nature of
basic building block of Known, namely, a piece of Known. It is a
piece of Known, that lives and it is responsible for Thoughts and
Actions of human beings.
This chapter now explores, who is the thinker, the talker and who
is taking action. This chapter also explores, what is the talk that
the talker is talking, what is the thought that the thinker is
thinking and what is the action and who is the driver of action.
Questions and Investigations
Let us work with a small experiment similar to what we did in the
last chapter. We would build on this experiment as we go further
in this chapter.
Experiment 1. Close your eyes for one minute and think about
Dogs in general. While you are thinking with closed eyes, try to
pay attention to the contents of Thoughts.
After you open your eyes, let us investigate the nature of Known
by answering following questions.
Q1. What was the Trigger that made you think these two things?

17

Q2. What was the content of your Thoughts? What were all
these Thoughts about?
Q3. What was the piece of Known (content of your Memory) that
was recalled? How is your Memory about Dogs related to what
Thought was thinking? Are they same?
Let us explore what we just discovered during this experiment.
What we just discovered is that all thoughts are closely related to
the recalled piece of Known, the recalled piece of Memory.
In other words, it looks as though the active piece of Known is
the center of Thinking process. It also seems very likely that the
active piece of Known is the driver of Thoughts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When there is a Trigger, a piece of Known comes alive and
starts living.
The piece of Known that is active, is the center of Thinking
process. All Thoughts are around this piece of Memory that
is at the center.
It is very similar to saying, a piece of Known that is living is
the Thinker as it is the one which is driving all thoughts at
that point of time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us now dig a little deeper into the mechanism and content of
actions that we take during our business of living.
Let us investigate what is the nature of action by answering
following question.
Experiment 2. Close your eyes for one minute and think about
Cats in general. While you are thinking with closed eyes, try to
pay attention to the contents of Thoughts.

18

After you open your eyes, let us investigate the nature of human
action by answering following questions.
Task 1. Write down two things about Cats or speak aloud two
things about Cats.
Q1. What was the content of your Thoughts? Was it same as
what you know about cats? In other words, was the content of
your Thought same as the content of your Memory about cats?
Q2. What was the content of what you wrote about Cats or
spoke about Cats in Task1? Is it same as the content of your
Thought that you discovered in Q1?
-We saw that the contents of Thoughts are driven by the active
piece of Known that is living at the center. We also saw that the
Action of writing or speaking are also driven by contents of
Thoughts about Cats.
Does it now look like that the active piece of Known (recalled
memory), Thoughts (movement around recalled memory), and
Action (outward action of writing) are same? They may be in
different forms but is their content very tightly linked?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The active piece of Known is the center of Thinking
process. All Thoughts are around this piece of Memory that
is at the center.
Thoughts, Actions and the Piece of Known that is Active at
the center are same, their content is very tightly linked.
They may have different forms but their content is
essentially same.
Thus, the piece of Known that has come alive on Trigger, is
the Thinker and it is also the one that is taking Action.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
19

We have discovered something phenomenal. We have

discovered the root of our thinking process and our actions. In
other words, we have just discovered the root of all Thoughts
and Actions of human beings.
It is very important that we get this right. Let us confirm this by
one more small experiment.
Experiment 3: The simple task now is to fetch a glass of water
from Kitchen (or somewhere near). Before getting up, close your
eyes and observe your thoughts on how would you fetch a glass
of water, then get up and go fetch it. While doing so pay close
attention to your Thoughts and Actions.
Now the questions are,
1.

What was the Trigger that made you think and act?

2.

What are the piece(s) of Known that were recalled and

became active at the center?

3. What was the content of Thought? (What thought was

thinking?)
4. What was the content of Action? (What action was
doing?)
Does it look like that the Active Piece of Known, Thought and
Action are very tightly linked. They may be in different forms but
are they essentially the same?
Let us summarize what we have discovered in this chapter.

20

Who is Living? What is Human World?

~~
1. What is at the center of Action, what is driving the action?
a. It is the movement of Thought
2. What is at the center of Thought, what is driving the
movement of Thought?
a. Active living piece of Known that is at the center, is the
driver of the Thought
3. Who brought this piece of Known to life?
a. A Trigger brought it to life

4. Who is the Thinker, who is driving the Thoughts?

a. Active Known is the Thinker as it is the one who is driving
Thoughts

5. Who is the one who is taking action? What is the Action?

a. Thought is the one which is driving the Action
b. Contents of living piece of Known is the Action
6. Who is talking the Talk, what is the Talk about?
a. Talk is nothing but an Action, Thought is the talker which
is talking the talk.
b. Contents of living piece of Known is the Talk
7. Men and Women think they are thinkers, they are talkers,
they are the ones who act.
a. But the Intellect shows Known is the Thinker, the Talker

21

and the one who takes actions

8. Who is a Man and who is a Woman?
a. The one who thinks and the one who takes action is Man
and Woman.
b. Intellect shows, active piece of Known is the thinker and
the one who drives actions.
i.Thus, Man is Known, the Woman is Known
ii.At a given moment, both are a piece of Content of
Consciousness that is living at that moment.
9. What is the Action of Human Beings?
a. It is the Content of Consciousness
10.What is the human world?
a. It is the result of Content of Consciousness
b. Content of Consciousness is the human world. Human
World is the Outer form or outer manifestation of what is
living inside every human being
c. Outer or Inner are not separate. Inner is the Outer
Consolidation Questions
Q1. You see that there is so much violence in the world. You also
know now that Outer is merely a manifestation of Inner. When
outer manifestation is so much widespread violence, at home,
outside home, everywhere. What does it point to? Given this
insight, what is the solution to Violence?

22

Chapter 3 - A Piece of Mind - Part II

In the last chapter, we learned that a living piece of Known is
foundation of human thought and action.
Last chapter introduced you to pieces of Known that are mainly
related to technical knowledge of life such as knowledge about
how to do things.
Now, lets get a little deeper into the nature of another kind of
piece of Known, which also contains memory of Discomfort and
Comfort.
As with any other piece of Known, when such a piece of Known
comes into being, all which is stored with that piece of Known
gets recalled and lives (including the memory of Discomfort and
Comfort)
Let us now revisit one more time, who is the thinker, the talker
and who is taking action? What is the talk that the talker is
talking? What is the thought that the thinker is thinking? What is
the action and who is the driver of that action?
Questions and Investigations
Let us first investigate a section of the Mind, the Known, which
has memory of comfort associated with it. Let us try to
understand what takes place when such a piece of Known
wakes up and lives.
Experiment 1: Close your eyes for one minute and try to recall
something really delicious, may be a cake, or some sweet, or
some food item that you really like. As you sit with your eyes
closed, imagine that food item is in front you and just sit silently.
After about a minute, gently open your eyes and move on to

23

following questions.
Q1. How did you feel during the time when you were sitting with
your eyes closed. Did you feel nice, comfortable? ( Comfortable /
Pleasant)
Q2. Did you feel like eating that food item again? in other words,
did you feel an urge to relive that pleasure again?
Q3. What happens when you go to a shop, where you see the
same Cake or Box of sweet, that made you feel good earlier, in
front of you?
Q4. Now you know how a piece of Memory works. In this
experiment, what was the Trigger? Which piece of Known was
recalled? What was the content of Thought? If there was really
that food item, sweet or cake in front of you right now, what
would your action be?
-It looks like, apart from technical pieces of Known that we
discussed in the last chapter, that contain knowledge about
things and how to do stuff, we also have a section of Known that
contains memory of comfort or pleasure that we experienced
when an event took place in the past.
These pieces of Known, which have memory of Comfort stored
with them, work in the same way as any other piece of Known.
There is a Trigger, a piece of Known wakes up and starts living in
the consciousness space. As this piece also has Memory of
Comfort or Pleasure stored with it, that Pleasure or Comfort also
gets recalled and human starts feeling nice again.

24

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a section of our Mind that has memories of past
Comfort or Pleasure stored in that. When a piece of Known
from this section of the Mind wakes up, lives, and becomes
center of Thinking process, Memory of feeling good gets
recalled and humans feel Comfortable again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, lets dig a little deeper and discover the nature of human
Thought and Action when when there is Comfort and when
human is feeling good..
During the experiment, we realized that when we recalled an old
pleasure, there was an urge to repeat the old pleasure again and
thoughts were of the same nature. If there was an opportunity to
take action, action would also be to repeat or relive the past
pleasure again.
We must ask now that whenever there is Comfort or Pleasure, is
there always an urge to relive the pleasure again? Is action of
whatever piece of Known that wakes up, when there is Comfort,
always of this kind?
For example, do we feel like visiting places that gave us pleasure
again? Do we feel like listening to music again that gave us
pleasure? Do we feel like eating, smelling and touching the
things that gave pleasure again and again?
Does it mean, when a piece of Known wakes up, its actions are
also part of the Memory? Does it mean when a piece of Known
wakes up, it can only take certain fixed actions that are part of its
Known and it can do nothing else?
We say that we like this thing or that thing but now it seems that
liking for that thing is part of memory, which is a memory of
past Comfort or Pleasure, that person or thing gave us. When
this memory of liking wakes up, action of life is also Known.

25

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When there is Pleasure or Comfort, a piece of Known
wakes up and lives, the action of this piece is also part of
Memory, part of the known. When it wakes up, it does what
it knows, it says, I want more, it tries extend the present
pleasure, or, it tries to relive the memory of old pleasure
again and again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In this chapter, so far we investigated a section of mind which is
a storehouse of memories of pleasure and feeling good. We
explored the nature of thought and action when a piece of
Known from this section of the Mind wakes up and lives.
Now, lets us investigate a section of Mind which is storehouse of
memories of Discomfort and Displeasure. Let us explore the
nature and action of life when there is Discomfort.
Q1. Say last month, I was walking by and someone called me a
Fool. I felt very uncomfortable. Do you also feel very
uncomfortable or angry when someone insults you or shouts at
you in insulting tone?
Q2. Now, what takes place when you again see the person who
has insulted you in the past? What takes place when someone
merely mentions the name of that person? Does the Discomfort
come back again?
Q3. Would you again feel Discomfort, if you see that person
again after 10 years? That person may have completely changed
but does it matter at all?
It looks like, we also have a section of Known that contains
memory of Discomfort or Displeasure that was experienced
when an event took place.

26

These pieces of Known, which have memory of Discomfort

stored with them, work in the same way as any other piece of
Known. There is a Trigger, a piece of Known wakes up and starts
living in the consciousness space. As this piece also has
Memory of Discomfort or Feeling bad stored with it, that also
gets recalled and human starts feeling uncomfortable again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a section of our Mind that has memories of past
Discomforts. When a piece of Known from this section of
the Mind wakes up, Memory of feeling bad gets recalled
and humans feel Uncomfortable again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, lets dig a little deeper and discover the nature of human
Thought and Action when memory of Discomfort is at the center
of thinking process.
Experiment 2:
This experiment will take 6 minutes of time.This is a two part
exercise, take 2 minutes for first part and four minutes for the
second.
It is important to complete this exercise to realize, first hand, the
fact of human action when there is Discomfort.
Following is a simple task you need to do. There are two options,
you could choose any one that you find appropriate.
# First two minutes
Option 1: Close your eyes and recall one real incidence when
someone insulted you or made you feel uncomfortable. Or
someone did something to you that made you feel bad. Try to
recall the entire incident from beginning to end. With closed eyes
imagine that it is happening in front of you right now.

27

If you can not recall any such incidence than you could try
following option. Use this option only in case you can not recall
any incidence of the nature described above.
Option 2: Close your eyes, try to recall a real person who you do
NOT like much.
Now with closed eyes, imagine as if the following is taking place
in reality right now,
The person comes to you, seemingly very angry and shouts at
you saying -- You are a FOOL, and you should be ashamed of
yourself. Earth is a better place without foolish people like you
# Next four minutes.
Just close your eyes, and sit. Do nothing. Just let whatever is
taking place take place inside you. Be attentive, observe how
you feel and the network of thoughts that is naturally taking
place.
After completing this exercise, you could move on to the
discussion below.
Q1. During second part of the experiment, when you were sitting
with your eyes closed, what kind Thoughts did you observe?
Were they of the nature of trying to fix that person, to avoid the
person, or, to tell him/her that how bad s/he is?
-During experiments, it has come out that when memory of
Discomfort wakes up, nature of Thought is one of the nature of
hurting or fixing the object of dislike or anger, or of trying to move
away or avoiding that person or even of trying to eliminate that
person from ones life.
In your past experience, have you experienced that when
Anger wakes up, it always acts in a similar way? It always

28

wants to hurt or fix the object of anger? And all the thoughts are
also about hurting the object or fixing the object of anger in some
way?
If that person that you imagined in the experiment, was in front of
you right now, what would be the nature of your action? Would
you say the same things (or do same things) that the Thought
was thinking?
Does it mean that possible actions of the piece of Known that
wakes up when there is Discomfort are also Known?
We say that we dislike this thing or that person or we hate this or
that person, but now it seems that Dislike or Hatred for that
person is part of the Known. When this memory wakes up and
lives, action of life is bound by Known action of this piece of
Memory.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When there is Discomfort, a piece of Known wakes up and
lives. When it wakes up, it does what it knows. It tries to
avoid the object that Triggered Discomfort, or fix the object,
or hurt the object in some way or even eliminate the object
from life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us summarize what we have realized in this chapter.

29

LIVING MECHANISM of CONSCIOUSNESS

- A PIECE of KNOWN -

1. Known is made of up of Pieces of Known

a. Pieces of Known live along with human body

b. Any of the pieces can be recalled or they come alive

when life comes in contact with appropriate Trigger
2. What is the living mechanism of a Piece of Known? What is
it made up of?
a. A Piece of Known has a set of Known Triggers
i.

Anytime there is a Trigger, a piece of Known linked to

that Trigger is recalled, it wakes up and lives

b. A Piece of Known, has a goal or objective which is also

part of the Known
c. A piece of Known behaves or acts in a Known way

i. Every time a piece of Known wakes up, it behaves in

the same way
ii. It can only take one of the actions it has learned in the
past
1. The piece of Known may have learned to behave in
2 or 3 ways or may be 5. But the behaviour is always
limited to this set of limited Known choices
d. A piece of Known thinks in a Known way
i.

When a piece of Known is at the center, all thoughts

are related to Known content, behaviour and objective

30

that is linked to the memory of this piece of Known

3. When a piece of Known is recalled on Trigger and is living,
a. Beyond what it wants to see, it can see nothing else.
Beyond what it wants to hear, it can hear nothing else.
Beyond what it wants to do, it can do nothing else.
4. For example, when a piece of Known that you call - Dislike
or Hatred - comes into being
a. It only knows its Goal, that is to avoid or hurt or eliminate
the other
b. It is blind to the suffering of the object of dislike
c. It can only see what it wants to see, that are things to
hate or dislike
d. It can only hear what it wants to hear, that are things to
hate or dislike
e. It can only think what it wants to think, that is how to
achieve its goal
f. It can only do what it wants to do, it is blind to everything
else
5. You say you are Angry on so and so person. Is it a fact
that you are Angry or at that moment, there was a Trigger
and A piece of Known got recalled, that you call Anger
a. When this piece of Known comes into being, can you do
anything

other

than

what

this

piece

of

Known

commands?

31

i. Can you be kind to object of your anger? Is it possible?

b. When you are Anger, can you think any thought that is
not about hurting the object of your anger?
c. Does the same thing wakes up every time there is similar
Trigger? And does it do the same thing again?
6. Therefore, what you call Anger, is a piece of Known. It is
an integral part of your being. It lives with you, along with
you, as your right or left hand lives with you
a. When this is piece comes alive, you are not Angry, you
are this living piece of Known that you call Anger
b. When this lives, life can do nothing else other than what
is the command of this piece of Known
7.

Similarly you say, I desire to achieve so and so, I am

interested is such and such thing, I dislike such and thing, I
have such and such goal
a. Is it not a fact that you are nothing but Desires,
Interests, Likes, Dislikes, Anger, Envy, Hatred
and many other pieces of Known that are living with you
waiting for a Trigger to come alive?
i. When they wake-up, they can only do what is Known

8. Men and Women say they are so and so name and so and
so title
a. They are nothing but a piece of Known that is living at a
given moment

32

b. For a moment, they are Desire, another moment they

are Ego, another moment they are Attachment and
another they can be very well be Craving for a pleasure
or something else
9. Who is the Man and Who is the Woman?
a. Man is Known, the Woman is Known, both are Content of
Consciousness that is Living.
10.What is the Action of Human Beings?
a. It is in the Content of Consciousness
11.What is the human world?
a. It is the result of Content of Consciousness
b. Content of Consciousness is the human world. It is the
Outer form or outer manifestation of what is living inside
every human being.
c. Outer or Inner are not separate. Inner is the Outer.
Consolidation Questions
Q1. As you live your life, pay special attention when you feel
Comfortable. What are your actions and thoughts when you feel
Comfortable?
Q2. As you live your life, pay special attention when you feel
Uncomfortable. What are your actions and thoughts when you
feel Discomfort?

33

Chapter 4 - Sources of Known

In previous chapters, we learned that the infrastructure of
Thinking and Thought is living mechanism of Human
Consciousness. Thought is movement of Known.
We realized how our consciousness moves, thinks and acts. We
realized that first there is recognition of a Trigger, then a piece of
Known, the Memory, wakes up and becomes center of Thinking
process. We also realized that content of our action, content of
thought and content of the piece of Known (the Memory) are
very tightly linked.
We realized that the piece of memory that was recalled, the
content that the thought was thinking and the action that we take,
may appear and work in different forms but their content is
essentially the same.
It is very similar to saying that I am a piece of Known that wakes
up and lives at a particular moment as all my Thoughts and
Actions at that moment are completely controlled by the content
of that piece of Known.
Now let us investigate what is the source of a piece of Known
that lives with us as an integral part of our being. Let us also
investigate, what is the life and nature of a piece of Known after
it has become part of our being.
Let us investigate where does the pieces of Mind, the Known
come from by answering following questions
Q1. When you hear your phone ring, which piece of Memory
gets triggered, what do you do when you hear your phone ring?
Q2. How did the knowledge of what the sound of phone ring
means become part of your Known? How did the knowledge of

34

what to do when phone rings become part of your Known?

Q3. Your Known has collected a lot of knowledge such as how to
cook, how to drive, the knowledge of language, what did you eat
yesterday etc How did it become part of your Known?
Let us summarize what we just discovered by answering these
questions. Some of our Known has come from experience of
living with real things and real people around us.
As we live in the world, we collect a lot of knowledge about the
functions of living either by direct experience or by listening to
others, or reading about what others have learned while working
with real things of the world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A lot of Known has come from direct experience of living
with real things and people. Some of the Known has come
from experiences of others.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us investigate one more kind of Known by answering the
following question
Q1. Say you read a book that describes an imaginary monster,
describes a place where this monster lives and also describes
imaginary places where humans can be subjected to
excruciating pain and suffering. After reading this book this
information becomes part of your Known or Memory? What is
the source and nature of such Knowledge?
A lot of our Known has come from imagination of others. It may
have nothing to do with reality of the world but after it becomes
part of the Known, it works in the same way as any other piece
of Known. When there is a Trigger, a piece of Known becomes

35

alive and drives our thoughts and actions.

All superstitions that have nothing to do with reality fall in this
category of Known.
For example, if one has learned from others that when a cat
crosses ones way, it is a bad omen. Now, that imaginary idea is
part of that persons Known. Next time, when a cat crosses that
persons way, you would see that person would stop from moving
forward. Isnt it very similar to saying, there was a Trigger (image
of Cat), a piece of Known became alive and drove thoughts and
actions.
So in above case, what was the Known? The Known was
memory that When a Cat crosses your way, you should stop.
What is the Thought?, the Thought was a Cat has crossed the
way, so I should stop, same as recalled Memory. What was the
Action?, Action was to stop as a Cat has crossed the way.
Simple isnt it? Does your Memory also have some or many such
fictitious things that someone has told you in the past? Is Nature
of your Thought and Action the same when these memories get
Triggered by events around you?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A lot of Known has come from imagination of others. The
source may be imagination, but, once it becomes part of
the Known, it works and acts in the same way as any other
piece of Known.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lets explore another kind of Known that we have not
learned in this life by trying to answer following question
Q1. Does your Memory also contain Known that you have not
learned in this life? For example, did you already know how to
cry when you were born? Did you already know a lot of things

36

that were needed to live life when you were born?

Gradually we would realize that most of our Known falls in this
category.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of the Known has come from the past of human race,
it has been inherited
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the last chapter, we realized that there is a section of Mind
which also contains memories of past Comfort and Discomfort.
The discussion on sources of Known is not complete until we
also investigate briefly the nature of source of Discomfort and
Comfort.
It is easy to see how real physical Discomfort is created, for
example, when a thorn pricks the body, there is pain. It is simple
to see and understand.
Also there is Discomfort and Comfort created by mechanism of
Senses. For example, for the eyes, whatever is pleasant to see
creates Comfort and unpleasant to see creates Discomfort, for
the ears, whatever is pleasant to hear creates Comfort and
unpleasant to hear creates Discomfort, for the tongue, whatever
is pleasant to taste creates Comfort and unpleasant to taste
creates Discomfort, for the skin, whatever is pleasant creates
Comfort and unpleasant creates Discomfort.
On a little bit of thinking and investigation, it is easy to see the
physical mechanism of Comfort and Discomfort and as we have
seen in previous chapters, this becomes Memory and gets
recalled when there is a Trigger.
We say, something is very beautiful, some music is so cool or
something tastes really good. What we mean is that when life
comes in contact with these things, there is Pleasant Sensation

37

or there is Comfort.
When we say, we like this thing or that thing, we basically mean
that there is memory of Comfort associated with these things.
We basically mean that the presence of these things have
created Comfort in the past, purely by the mechanism of Senses.
Similarly, when we say, we dislike this thing or that thing, we
basically mean that there is memory of Discomfort associated
with these things. We basically mean that the presence of these
things have created Discomfort in the past, purely by the
mechanism of Senses.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Senses create their own Comfort and Discomfort. Source is
the mechanism of senses.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us explore another kind of Discomfort that is purely a
creation of Mind. Let us try to answer following questions to
understand what are we talking about.
Purpose of following questions and examples is not to advise
you about what is proper behaviour or to appreciate some
specific kind of behaviour or put down another kind of behaviour.
These examples are merely a tool to bring out a fact of Mind so
that we can realize how Mind mechanism creates its own
Discomfort.
Q1. Since childhood have you learned a lot of Proper
Behaviour or a lot of What Should Be(s) from your parents and
society? For example, have you learned what should be a
proper way to eat, what should be a proper way to talk, what
should be a proper way to dress, what should be a proper way
to pray to your god, what should be a proper way to do xyz?
Q2. How do you feel, when you notice that someone, who is

38

sitting beside you, is not eating the way he should be [Making

too much noise or using hands in a way s/he is not supposed to
be doing]? Do you feel uncomfortable? Is there Discomfort?
Q3. Have you learned a particular way to pray or sing national
anthem? For example, in your country proper way to pray could
be to sit in a particular manner only or in your country proper way
to sing national anthem could be to stand in attention etc
How do you feel, when you notice that someone is not praying in
a way s/he should be or not singing National Anthem in a way he
should be? Do you feel uncomfortable? Is there Discomfort?
Q4. Have you also learned proper attire or dress you should
wear when you pray? or when you go to a particular event such
as your own wedding or a party or some specific event that need
to be attended in a particular kind of dress?
Q5. Can you imagine yourself praying or attending that particular
event in an attire that is not according to What Should Be? Why
not? How do you feel even at the thought of doing so?
--Let us try to understand what we have just discovered. We have
learned a lot of What Should Be(s) from our parents and from
society. These What Should Be(s) are part of our Memory, they
are part of the contents of Known.
As we live our life and there is contact with behaviour that is
different from ideal of What Should be, which is a part of our
Memory, there is sensation of Discomfort.
When this comparison succeeds, when there is contact with an
event that is in line with stored ideal of What Should Be, there is
sensation of Comfort.
It is very similar to saying that Mind is continuously working as a
measurement instrument. Mind is continuously measuring What

39

is going on with its private idea of What Should Be(s). When

the measurement succeeds, there is Comfort and when
measurement fails, there is Discomfort.
Looks like this is fixed mechanism of our Mind that creates its
own Comfort and Discomfort.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When there is an event, which is not in line with Minds
private idea of What Should Be, there is Discomfort
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you ever wondered why do you dislike people who behave
differently from your idea of What Should be i.e who do not dress
the same way as you have learned, who do not pray the same
way as you have learned or who do not behave the same way as
your idea of What should be(s) demands?
Are you consciously doing it or it is just taking place?
Let us dig a little deeper into this fact to understand an
interesting side effect of what we just discussed above.
Purpose of following questions and examples is not to advise
you about what is proper behaviour or to appreciate some
specific kind of behaviour or put down another kind of behaviour.
These examples are merely a tool to bring out a fact of Mind so
that we can realize how Mind mechanism works inside us.
Q1. Say there is a man who has learned that his wife should
wear a particular kind of dress, it is part of his stored memory of
What Should Be that he has learned from society. When this
man observes his wife not wearing that kind of dress, there is
Discomfort, he feels Uncomfortable.
What is the source of his Discomfort? Is the real source the wife
or the real source of Discomfort is the idea of What Should be
that is part of the memory of the person? In other words, would

40

he have felt uncomfortable, if there was no such idea in his

Memory?
Q2. When you feel Discomfort do you realize that the real source
of Discomfort is not the other person but it is the idea of What
Should Be(s) that is living inside?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am busy fixing this person or that person, thinking s/he is
the reason of my Discomfort, but the real source of
Discomfort is my private idea of What Should Be(s)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us now try to understand what is the automatic action of
Mind or what do humans do when there is such Discomfort.
Q1. When humans encounter events that are not in line with their
idea private idea of What Should Be, is their nature of action
one of Trying to fix the other?, or Trying to avoid the other? or
Trying to hurt the other in some way?
Q2. What do you do, when you observe something that does not
match your idea of What Should Be(s) and there is Discomfort?
Is your action of similar nature?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When there is Discomfort, the nature of action of Mind is to
violate the other in some way. Similarly, when there is
Comfort, the action is of opposite nature to that of
Discomfort.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As we can see, these experiences become the part of our
Memory and later they get recalled on Trigger ( whenever we see
or hear about that person again) and we again feel Discomfort or
Comfort.

41

Are you consciously doing it or it is just taking place?

Let us summarize what we have realized in this chapter.

Sources of Known, Comfort and Discomfort

~~
1. How has Known come into existence?
a. Some Known came from past experience of living with
Actual Things
b. Some Known came from the factual Known of others
c. Some Known came from imagination of others

d. Most of the Known has come from past of Human race. It

has been inherited.
2. What is Comfort and what is Discomfort?
a. Discomfort is unpleasant Sensation, Comfort a pleasant
Sensation.
3. What is the cause of Comfort and Discomfort?
a. The cause could be a real physical cause, it is basic
nature of life.
b. For the Eyes, Ears, Skin, Tongue and Nose, whatever is
pleasant creates Comfort and whatever is unpleasant
creates Discomfort.
4. Cause could also be an inbuilt mechanism that works
based on a bundle of memories of What Should Be(s)

42

5. What is a What Should Be?

a. What Should Be is a prescription of how a thing or
behaviour should be, that men and women learn from
society or from past experience.
6. Whenever there is Contact with behaviour that is not in line
with What Should Be, there is Discomfort, whenever there
is Contact with behaviour that is in line with What Should
Be, there is Comfort.
7. What is the action of Reaction to Discomfort?
a. Action is Known, the action is to try to fix others, to shout
at the other, to punish or to hurt the apparent source or to
violates the other, whatever is possible
8. Real source of Discomfort can be inside and not outside
a. Real source of Discomfort can be an idea of What
Should be that lives inside. Other person can merely be
a Trigger.
9. What is the action of Reaction to Comfort
a. When it wakes up it says I want it, I want more of it
b. It doesnt like sense of Comfort to go away
c. It wants the pleasure or Comfort to stay forever.
10.It is not that humans are consciously doing it, it is just
talking place and one is not aware of it.
a. It is the basic nature of Known, the Mind, that is playing
its play and the result is human life that we see around

43

Consolidation Questions
Q1. During business of living become aware of instances when
you feel Uncomfortable. Notice if it is because what other person
is doing is not in line with your idea of What Should Be(s)?
What is your action during such events? If your idea of What
Should Be were to be different, would you still feel
uncomfortable?

44

Chapter 5 - The Network of Thoughts

In previous chapters, you learned that the infrastructure of
Thinking and Thought is living mechanism of Human
Consciousness. Thought is movement of Known.
This chapter now introduces one of the major factors of human
life, that is Network of Thoughts that lives inside all human
beings.
This chapter also gives you a very effective practical tool for
discovering Contents of your own Consciousness. You are
encouraged to use this tool to see, for a fact, what is living inside
you.
Pre chapter exercise
Read following instructions carefully and then complete the
experiment. This exercise will take 15 minutes. Again as in
previous chapters, the contents of this Chapter will make no
sense to you at all, unless you complete this exercise.
Please setup an alarm of 15 minutes to know when 15 minutes
are over.
1. After you have set up an alarm, sit comfortably and close
your eyes. Start with a broad smile on your face. Idea is to
enjoy the process and not get troubled by it.
2. After closing your eyes, pay Attention to any sounds that
are naturally playing around you and try to stay with the
Sounds only.
a. You may notice that there are many sounds playing
around you, you can pick any one sound to follow at a
time.

45

3. Pick any sound and with great attention, try to follow the
sound until it ends.
a. You may notice that you are not able to stay with chosen
Sound until that ends completely and you may find that
your attention naturally moves away to another sound
b. If that is the case, just move on the new Sound and follow
that sound with a smile until that ends.
4. After a sound ends, try to stay with the interval that follows
the sound. Then when a new sound starts, move on to the
new sound. Try to keep attention continuously at one or
another sound.
5. Soon you would discover that movement of thought has
taken your attention away from the Sound.
6. When you discover that Thought has come into being, try to
think, what was the Trigger that started this Thought?
7. Trigger could be anything, for example it could be a sound
you recognized and that started a thought or it could be a
sensation that you felt in body that started a thought. A
Trigger could also be something that previous Thought was
thinking.
8. Think and trace backwards, and try to find, when you were
following the Sound and then what took place, that started
this Thought?
9. After you have identified the Trigger, again, go back to
paying attention to sounds that are playing around you.
Soon, you would discover that Thought has moved away
again. Remember your primary aim is to follow the sounds
and not to get busy with Analysis.
10.Repeat point 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 until your decided time is

46

over and then move on to the questions below this

exercise.
Questions and Investigations
Q1. Out of 15 minutes of exercise, how long were you able to
stay with movement of Sound? How long the life was busy with
movement of Thought, which is movement of Known?
Q2. What Triggers moved you away from the Sound? What
Triggers moved you away from one Thought to another (Hint - It
may be something that the first thought was thinking that
Triggered the second Thought etc)
-Let us explore what we just discovered.
When we close our eyes, we notice that several events are
taking place around us.
We notice that as soon as we recognize something that we
know, a related Thought comes into being, it follows another
thought and then another thought comes into being. It looks like
thought keeps moving until there is realization that during this
exercise, we are supposed to be with sounds and sounds alone.
Even if we try to be with sounds alone, Thoughts keep taking us
away from what is going on. It seems thought comes uninvited
and then gets busy with its own world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When life pays attention to unknown, as soon as there is
recognition of something Known, a Thought starts around
this recognized Known. Then something in the first
Thought starts the second Thought and it goes on. Mind
keeps the life busy in a network of Thoughts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
47

Let us now dig a little deeper into the world of Thoughts that we
just experienced.
Q1. Did you discover that there is kind of series of Thoughts that
are taking place? Are they all related to things that you know?
Your family, your job, your work, your goals, your problems, your
projects etc?
Q2. Is it fair to say that phenomena of Network of Thoughts
keeps the life busy in the field of Known? Is it fair to say that
even when we consciously try to stay with the Present Moment
(the movement of sound around you), at first opportunity,
Thought takes us to its Known world, the world of our past?
Q3. This was the experience when you were consciously trying
to pay keen Attention to what was going on around you in the
Present Moment. What do you think would be happening in
normal life hours when Thought is left on its own?
Are we generally even aware, what is going on in the Present
Moment? or Thought is busy with itself?
-Let us explore what are we just discovered here.
The Thoughts that we experience are all related to things that we
Know. They are related to our known lives, our known problems,
our work, our interests, our goals, our desires, our envies, our
hatreds, our fears etc
We experience that our Thoughts are deeply rooted in our
Known that is our past, our Memory.
Life is busy with Known, we generally dont cares about what is
going on outside our small circle of Known.

48

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Network of Thoughts keeps the life busy in the field of
Known. As the Known is result of our past, Network of
Thoughts, keeps our lives tightly tied to pole of our past
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us look at something interesting that we discovered
during observation of Sounds.
Q1. During whatever little time you were able to pay keen
Attention to the movement of sound, was any Thought present
during those rare moments of great Attention?
During the observation of Sounds, did you notice that when there
is keen Attention to Sound there is no Thought and when there is
Thought, there is no Attention to what is going on around us?
The Network of Thoughts stops during rare moments of great
Attention.
We have discovered something phenomenal here. We have
discovered that either there is movement of Thought or there is
Attention to what is going on.
There are times in life when Thought bothers us a lot. For
example, when you are worried about something, the movement
of thought simply refuses to stop, sometimes it even does not let
you sleep.
Thought does not know how to stop, so just try to pay keen
Attention to Sound that is naturally going on and movement of
Thought would naturally come to an end for that moment. In that
moment, when movement of thought is silent there is experience
of quiet and peace.
Fear is a movement of mind, so are anger, anxiety, aversions &
all other pieces of Known. So, when life seems completely out of

49

control, just pay Attention to natural sounds and movement of

thoughts would come to a stop for that moment.
Peace is beyond the field of mind. When movement of the Mind,
movement of Thought, is silent, there is experience of peace.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Consciousness space, either there is Thought or there is
Attention to what is going on. Thought does not know how
to stop. Paying attention to what is going on stops the
incessant flow of Thought and life connects with peace
unknown.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us investigate what is the power of Thought and what is
its limitation.
Q1. Close your eyes and try to think any one thing, anything.
Just one thing that is NOT related to things that you already
know. Just one thing that is NOT related to anything that is part
of your Known or that is not a modification of something that is
part of your Known. Is it possible?
-You can only think around a piece of Known, combine two or
more pieces of Known in different ways, but your thinking would
always be tied to the pole of your Known.
For example, I know that birds fly, and I have a wish to fly so I
can imagine myself flying. So this seemingly new imagination is
also related to things that I know
You can not imagine and think anything that is absolutely new.
We can see the power of Thought in that it could use our past
knowledge, combine two pieces of Known, stretch the Known a
bit to find solutions for our living problems based on our past

50

experience, but it would always be tied to pole of our past that is

our Memory.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Human Thought is tied to pole of human past. It can not
think anything absolutely new. It can incrementally innovate
on top of old Knowledge but Thought can never radically
break from the box of the past.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you try to solve a problem, are you aware that thinking can
not take you beyond certain limit? Put it simply, are you aware
that all solutions that thinking can ever discover would be of the
Known, thinking can not discover anything absolutely new.
One must now investigate, if Thinking is tied to our Known, how
does life connect to Unknown? How do humans discover things
that are absolutely new?
Let us try to explore this interesting question by a small
experiment. In order to really appreciate what are we talking
about, it is very important that you actually do it (it is very
simple).
Q1. Look at a Thing (anything) that is in front of you right now.
Is that Thing part of your Known, is it part of your Memory?
Q2. Now look at that Thing (that you looked in above question)
again with great Attention, try to notice those little dots that you
did not notice earlier. Go ahead touch it, feel it, may be smell it.
Now, does your Known have more knowledge about the Thing
than it had earlier? Has something that was Unknown about that
thing earlier now become Known?
Q3. After this new observation, is your Known about that thing
complete? Or if you pay more attention, and investigate, more

Unknown could be discovered about that Thing?

-What happened when you were paying keen Attention to the
Thing during this experiment? Did something that was Unknown
to you become Known when you paid Attention?
We have again discovered something phenomenal, when we
suspend our Thought, when we keep aside what we already
know, and pay keen Attention, we come in contact with unknown.
All the great scientists are great observers of what is going on.
They are able to suspend their thought, keep aside their existing
knowledge, and are able to pay keen Attention to what is going
on. In that great attention, unknown can be seen, heard, felt and
discovered.
We have also realized that Known can evolve but it will always
be limited.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thought is tied to Known and Attention connects to
Unknown. When Thought is silent, with energy of Attention,
Unknown can be seen, heard, felt and discovered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us summarize what we have realized in this chapter.

52

CONTENT of CONSCIOUSNESS and Network of THOUGHTs

~~
1. A living Consciousness, works with both of Known and
Unknown
a. Consciousness works with Known in a Known way
b. Consciousness works with Unknown also in a Known
way
2. Attention and Thought

a. Thought is Known and Attention connects with Unknown

b. When there is movement of Attention, there is no
movement of Thought
c. Thought moves within the field of Known. Attention
moves in the field of Unknown
3. Only when Thought is suspended or when the Thought is
silent (Is not moving), by the energy of Attention, Unknown
is seen, heard, felt or experienced
4. Human life is busy in the field of Known. It is busy with
Thought all the time. In rare moments, Attention comes into
being and Unknown is seen, heard, felt or experienced
5. Known is limited to what it knows. So pay Attention,
Observe
6. Known about a Thing is seldom complete, there normally
would always be Unknown
a. When Known does not know this, it is Ignorant

53

i. Ignorant Known debates and fights, ignorant that it is

limited and incomplete Known
ii. When Known is aware it is not complete, it listens
iii. Aware Known listens to others Known
iv. Aware Known listens to UnKnown
v. Though not complete it is not ignorant
7. Let the Known know it is not complete
a. An aware Known can leverage the power of Known and
yet not be limited by itself.
8. Unending Network of Thoughts keeps life busy in the field
of Known. Tied to its past.
a. What is Network of Thoughts
i. It is one Thought after another occupying the entire
energy of life all the time
b. What has Triggered this Network of thoughts
i. It is an event in the movement of Unknown or an event
in the movement of Known that Triggers a Thought
ii. Thought keeps busy within the field of Known
9. Knowledge of Known is Unknown. Only observation and
attention can bring it to Known
a. Attention can only connect to Live and not the Past,
Known must be live, to be able to be observed.
b. Start from the Outer, follow the movement of a piece of

54

Unknown. Soon a piece of Known will come alive.

c. Follow the movement of the Thought, which is a
movement around the piece of Known
d. By knowing your Thoughts, you can know a piece of
yourself, which is a piece from Contents of your
Consciousness
e. Be Attentive, Observe with smile, Do not judge, be
patient.
10.Knowing Oneself is Wisdom, This is path to Wisdom
Consolidation Questions
Q1. As you live your everyday life, try to take some time out and
try to observe your own Thoughts (Like you did in pre chapter
exercise). Try to discover, what was the Trigger of those
Thoughts. Try to discover what these thoughts are trying to do?
Q2. In front you, movement of Unknown is always there. Even
when you are trying hard during these exercise sessions, you
are not able to stay with the movement of Sound for a long time?
Why this seemingly simple thing so hard?

55

Chapter 6 - Summary of Human

Situation
So far we have realized how Human Consciousness works.
First, there is recognition of a Trigger, a piece of Memory, the
Known, the Content of Human Consciousness wakes up and
lives. When this piece of Known is at the center of thinking
process, all Thoughts and Actions of human being are driven and
controlled by this piece of Known.
So far we have realized that whichever piece of Known wakes up
and lives, that piece of Memory, the Known, is Who am I at that
point of time. I can very well be something else at the other point
of time.
All my thoughts and actions, at a given point of time, are limited
by Known choices of this piece of Known that is living at the
center at that given point of time. For example, where I am
Anger, I realize that I can only hurt the other, I see that it is
difficult or rather it is impossible to be kind to other when I am
Anger.
So I can be anger at one point of time, fear at another, envy at
yet another or attachment, craving or desire at another point of
time. This sounds almost as if human life is completely controlled
by the contents of Known, the Memory, which is a result of the
Past.
The nature of human problem is not that it is taking place, the
problem is that as a human, one is not even aware that this is
what is taking place inside us every living moment.
What we have discovered sounds radically different from our
traditional understanding of who am I and you would require

56

more first hand observation of your own self to confirm what we

are talking about is indeed a living fact. Unless one does that,
above observations are merely theoretical in nature and have no
substance beyond an intellectual thought.
Part II of the book introduces some practical tools that you can
use to realize what is taking place inside your own self by first
hand observations.
Part III of the book introduces fundamental forces that are
responsible for creation and sustenance of structure of the
Known, responsible for shaping the human life on this planet
earth.
Part IV of the book discusses a state of Consciousness that is
free from this robotic mode of existence. That state of
Consciousness can use Memory but is not a slave of Memory
any more. That state is state of true Freedom.
Now, let us move on to Part II of the book and learn some
interesting tools that you could use to realize what is taking place
inside as you live your everyday life.

57

PART II - Digging deep into the

Known
In Part I, we learned that a part of living Known is always active
and is moving according to its Contents. This is the root of all
actions of humanity. It is responsible for shaping human world.
The next logical question one must ask now is, can one
experience, first hand, this enormous structure of Known that is
living.
Part II of the book describes couple of practical tools that you
could use to experience first hand, what is taking place inside
you, as you live your everyday life.
It is highly recommended that you proceed to part III only after
you have undertaken sufficient first hand observation of what is
taking place inside you.

tools,

Chapter 7 - Realization of Known

In part I of the book we learned that the infrastructure of Thought
and Thinking is the fundamental living mechanism of Human
Consciousness.
The knowledge of what is living inside is Unknown. We have also
realized that only way to connect to Unknown is by paying
Attention and by keen Observation of the living fact.
So we are going to use power of Attention and Observation to
realize first hand what is going on inside our own self and what is
the mechanism of human life inside us and outside us.

Realization of Known (Tool-1)

Let us discuss a slightly modified version of the observation tool
that you have used in Chapter 6, that can help you observe and
realize the fact of what is taking place inside your own self.
Gradually, as you live your life, using this tool you should be able
to uncover the forces of life that drive your actions and emotions.
Gradually, as your being realizes the fact of life, you would
experience increasing peace and joy in your life.
Allot at least 15 minutes of time for one sitting session of this
observation exercise (more is always better). It is better to set up
an alarm of 15 minutes or more to start with.
Discovery of active pieces of Self that are living inside
We now know that Thought is the body of Known that is living at
a given moment. By observing our living thoughts, we can
observe the piece of Known that is living at a given moment. We
are going to use this knowledge to uncover the facts of our own

59

self as they take place inside us.

Please use following instructions during the observation session.
1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Start with a broad
smile on your face. Idea is to enjoy the process and not get
troubled by it.
2. Pay keen Attention to any sounds that are naturally playing
around you and try to stay with the Sounds and Sounds
alone for entire duration of 10 minutes.
a. You can pick any sound and try to follow that sound from
beginning to end with great attention.
b. If your attention moves away to any other sounds before
chosen sound ends, there is no problem, just move on
the new Sound and follow that sound with a smile until
that ends.
3. Soon you would discover that though you are trying to be
with Sounds, thoughts take you away from observation of
sounds.

4. When you discover that a Thought has come into being,

ask yourself two questions
a. First question is, What is this thought trying to do?
i. It is simple to find what thought is trying to do. Thought
may be trying to solve a problem, take care of a family
member, or trying to fix someone or doing something
else that is related to your life.
b. Second question you need to ask is, What was the
Trigger that started this Thought?
i. Trigger could be anything, for example it could be a
sound that you recognized and that started a thought or

60

it could be a sensation that you felt in body that started a

thought. Trigger also could be something that a previous
Thought was thinking.
c. If you are not able to identify the Trigger, no big deal,
gradually as awareness grows you would be able to
identify what Triggered your current Thought.
5. After you have found the Trigger and have discovered what
thought is trying to do, again go back to paying attention to
sounds that are playing around you. Remember your job is
NOT to get busy with analysis, your primary job is to stay
with sounds and sounds only. So quickly ask these two
questions and move on.
6. Soon, you would discover that Thought has moved you
away again from the Sounds.
7. Repeat steps 2 to 5 through the entire sitting. Every time,
you repeat this exercise, you would have realized a piece of
Known, that is nothing but a piece of your own self.
Important Note:
1. Remember you are only observing what is naturally
taking place inside you and around you. Your job is not to
judge, condemn or appreciate what you observe, your job
is to merely pay attention and observe what is going on.
2. Initially, it may be hard to observe thoughts, their
objectives and the Trigger, but keep working with a smile
and gradually it would become very easy to observe what
is really going on.

61

Realization of Known (Tool-2)

Previous section of the book described a tool that you could use
as a conscious routine practice for observation and realization of
reality of Known. That tool requires you to sit with closed eyes for
at least 20 minutes.
Now, lets discuss another tool, which is similar to first tool, but
you could use it anytime while you conduct your everyday
business of living.
Tool of Observation and investigation of Known
As you live your life, pick up any marker of the Present Moment.
The following text uses Movements of Sound, but you could
use anything including, sight of movement of things, naturally
occurring body sensations or anything that is part of the present
moment.
Following text describes, how you could use this tool, while you
are busy with your morning walk.
1. As you go for your regular morning or evening walk, try to pay
attention to sound of your footsteps
2. Try to stay with the Sounds of footstep after footstep, not
missing any of the footsteps. When a sound ends, try to stay
with the interval that follows the sound. Then, when a new
sound starts, move on to the new sound. Try to keep attention
continuously at one or another sound.
3. Soon you would discover that movement of thought has taken
your attention away from the Sound of the footsteps.
4. When you discover that Thought has come into being, try to
think, what was the Trigger that started this Thought?
5. Trigger could be anything, for example it could be a sound
you recognized and that started a thought, it could be

62

something that you saw that triggered the thought or it could

be a sensation that you felt in body that started a thought.
6. Start from the Thought and think to trace backwards. Try to
find, when you were following the Sound and then what took
place, that started this Thought?
7. It is possible that several thoughts have taken place since you
lost track of the Sound and realized that the Thought is on. If
this is the case, then, you need to trace backwards from the
current thought that you became aware of. Ask yourself the
following
a. Which thought came before the thought that was going on
when you became aware that you were not with the sound.
And then, which thought came before that thought and so
on, until you reach the point of Trigger that took you away
from movement of Sound.
8. After you have identified the Trigger, try to think, what this
thought is trying to do? What objective is it trying to achieve?
9. After you have found the Trigger and discovered what
Thought is trying to do, again go back to paying attention to
sounds of your footsteps. Soon, you would discover that
Thought has moved away again.
1. Repeat the process again and again through the entire
sitting. Every time, you repeat this exercise, you would
have realized a piece of Known, that is nothing but a
piece of your own self.
Important Note:
1. Remember you are only observing what is naturally
taking place inside you. Your job is not to judge, condemn
or appreciate what you observe, your job is to merely pay
attention and observe what is going on in your thought
space, which is nothing but a body of the living Known.

63

2. There will be situations, when you will not readily be able

to find the Trigger, in such cases, get back to observation
of sound with a smile.
3. Initially, it may be hard to observe thoughts, their
objectives and the Trigger, but keep working with a smile
and gradually it would become very easy to observe what
is really going on.
Other possible scenarios that you could use
1. You could observe with attention moving cars, or vehicles
one after another and try to be with that sight and that
sight only.
2.

You could use movement of the sounds of the river,

sound of the birds or natural sounds that are taking place
in your house or office as a marker of Present Moment.

3. Your could also observe the touch of the wind on your

body or any other body sensations that you could
continuously keep track of one after another.

64

Chapter 8 - Listening to the Thing

This chapter introduces one more effective tool to discover
Known as you live your everyday life.
To start with, lets consider following facts
1. At the root of your every action, there is a piece of Known
living at the center.
2. At the root of everything that you say, there is a piece of
Known living at the center.
3. At the root of every action that others take, there is a
piece of Known at the center.
4. At the root of everything that others say, there is a piece
of Known living at the center
Following investigations and questions look at one such
interaction and how you could use your observation and
attention to become aware of the Thing that is living, which is a
piece of Known.
Investigations and Questions
Q1. You see two people A and B. Person A looks very angry
and he is shouting at B, you hear A shouting the words - You
are a Fool B
In this question, what is the Word of person A and what is the
Thing that is living inside person A?
-Let us see what is going on. Naturally, the words that we hear
are All the shouting etc.. that person A is busy with. We also
realize that there must be a piece of Known that has woken up
inside person A, there must be some kind of Discomfort that

65

person A is feeling that is at the root of all the shouting that

person A is engaged in.
Let us investigate a little deeper.
Q1. Is it fair to say that - All the shouting that A is engaged in is
an action of the Thing that somehow has been triggered inside
person A?
Q2. When person B hears this shouting, you see that B also
starts shouting and then some kind of fist fight follows
What happened here to person B? What Triggered his action?
Q3. After person A shouted at person B, was person B able
to see what was living in person A, and take care of the real
Thing (Which is independent of As Discomfort or Bs
Discomfort)? or person Bs all energy got wasted by a reaction
that has taken over person B?
-Let us see what is taking place. Looks like words of person A
triggered some kind of Discomfort in person B, and whatever
Known came into being is shouting on person A.
Looks like, actions of both of A and B are to punish the other
or cause hurt to the other in some way.
It also looks like that the piece of Known that woke up on
trigger only can do what is Known and that has no ability to see
or do anything else.
Now let us also explore something more interesting.
Q1. Now imagine person A comes to you and shouts You are
a FOOL, will you be able to see The Thing that is living in
person A? and take care of the Thing and not get entangled in
the words? or as soon as you hear the words, a piece of Known
would wake up inside you and would do that same thing that

66

person B did?
Q2. What prevents from your being able to Listen to real thing
and then take care of real thing?
For example, what prevents you from patiently listening to A,
then realizing that A looks Angry, and then attempting to take
care of Real Thing by asking What makes him Angry in a calm
voice, and then like a wise person take care of the real Thing
with a smile?
Q3. Is it fair to say that Known that wakes up lives? Is it fair to
say that Known, when it wakes up and lives, has no ability to see
the real Thing or take care of real thing? That piece of Known
that I am at the moment, can see only what it wants to see, does
only what it wants to do?
Q4. Now can you observe the world and try to Listen to the
Thing, that is living inside you, and that is also living inside other
people? Is it possible to not just react to the words, but really try
to listen to the real Thing, and then take care of the real Thing
that is behind the words?
-Let us summarize what are we talking about and try to use it as a
tool of observation as we live our lives.
Listen to the Thing - Do Not get busy with words

~~
1. Every moment of life is an opportunity to Discover the Known
a. Known is living inside and Known is living outside
2. When you hear other talk something, ask
a. Which is the piece of Known that is talking?
b. What has Triggered it?
c. What is the action of this piece of Known?

67

3. So when you hear someone shout

a. Realize there is Discomfort and a piece of Known which is
shouting
b. Find the trigger and take care of the Thing
4. When you realize you are shouting
a. Realize there is Discomfort and a piece of Known which is
shouting
b. Find the trigger and take care of the Thing
c. Ask what is the nature of this thing that has come to life
i. What is its objective
ii. What is it trying to do
iii. What is it thinking
5. When you see yourself doing anything
a. Ask, who am I that is living at the moment?
b. What was the Trigger?
c. What is the Objective?
d. What is the thought?
6. When you crave for an object or pleasure
a. Ask, Who is living at this moment? Who am I?
b. Ask, What was the Trigger that made it come alive?
c. What is the action, what am I trying to do?
d. What is thought?
7. Live your life but with awareness
a. Knowing yourself is WISDOM
b. Be patient, do not judge, do not condemn
c. What is living is a fact, you are merely observing it live

68

PART III - Fundamental Shaping

Forces
In Part I & II of the book, you learned that a part of living Known
is always active and is moving according to its Contents. This is
the root of all actions of humanity.
The next logical question one must ask now is, how this
enormous structure of Known has come into being?
Specifically, one must ask, how do pieces of Known that include,
Likes, Dislikes, Aversions, Cravings, Ego, Desires, Fear of
known, Goals, Interests, Envies, Attachments, Anger,
Frustration, Lust etc come into being.
Part III of the book describes some of the vital and fundamental
forces that are part of Known, these forces are integral part of
Content of Human Consciousness.
These are called fundamental forces as they are responsible for
creation of most of the structure of Known. They are responsible
for shaping the human world.
Human Consciousness is a vast ocean of Known that has come
into being by a million years or more of evolution.
Again, one must remember that it is the Real Phenomena,
which is of importance and not writers words or description. You
could use writers words to discover the real thing that words are
pointing to.
These phenomena are pieces of Known and they live inside you.
A piece of Known wakes up when life comes in contact with a
trigger that is linked to that piece of Known.

69

Action of every piece of Known is also Known. It means that

when a piece of Known wakes up, it can only take one of the
actions it has learned in the past, the past of human existence.
Let us now take a look at some of these fundamental forces.
Important Note:
In this part of the book, writer is trying to point to an actual
Unknown phenomena that is taking place inside you. Unless you
have sufficient experience of observing the movement of Known,
which is the movement of your Thought, it may be difficult to
realize what the contents of this part of the book are pointing to.
Unless you have already done so, writer recommends that you
use observation tools described in Part II of the book for some
time before starting with this part of the book.

70

Chapter 9 - Reaction to Discomfort Aversion

This chapter introduces one of the fundamental forces of
common Consciousness, namely, the force of Reaction to
Discomfort. We would also discuss secondary forces of
Aversions that force of Reaction to Discomfort creates. Force
of Reaction to Discomfort can create thousands of Aversions
over lifetime of men and women.
Reaction to Discomfort, Aversions and mechanism of creation of
Aversions are integral part of Known and is Content of Human
Consciousness.
During the course of the book, we have realized that life
experiences Discomfort either because of real physical reasons
or because of the fact that Mind can create its own Discomfort
when events around us do not match with our private ideals of
What Should Be(s).
Let us try to answer following questions to investigate what is the
nature of force that we are calling Reaction to Discomfort
Q1. When Anger or Irritation comes into being, do you feel
Discomfort? Do you feel uncomfortable at that time?
Q2. What is the nature of your Thoughts when there is Anger or
Irritation, in other words, what do you generally think when there
is Anger or Irritation? What is the nature of action that you take
when there is Anger or Irritation?
Q3. During your self observation, did you realize when Anger or
Irritation wake up, they have certain force to it? Have you noticed
that there is certain force that pushes Thoughts and Actions in

71

certain direction only? For example, when there is Anger, is it

possible to be kind to object of your Anger or say nice things to
him?
Let us discuss what we have just discovered. Sensation of
Discomfort acts as a Trigger to a piece of Known that is integral
part of all human Consciousness.
It also looks like that nature of that piece of Known, that wakes
up on Discomfort, is that of a force or something that packs
energy to push Thoughts and Actions of humans in certain
Known direction.
It appears that when there is Discomfort, the action of human is
of the nature of hurting the other in some way or avoiding the
other who is perceived to be the cause of Discomfort at that time.
Lets call this piece of Known, the force, which wakes up when
there is discomfort, Reaction to Discomfort.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a Known force, namely Reaction to Discomfort,
that lives inside all humans. It gets Triggered whenever
there is Discomfort. Like any other piece of Known, it can
only do what it Knows. It tries to change the other, or, avoid
the other, or, hurt the other in some way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us investigate an interesting side effect of this phenomena.
Q1. When there is Anger or Irritation, do humans realize that real
source Discomfort that triggered Anger or Irritation can be an
ideal of What Should Be that is living inside? Or all the fury of
the force of Anger and Irritation is directed towards the person or
object that is seen outside?
Q2. Are humans consciously doing it or it is just taking place

72

automatically? Do you have a choice to be nice when there is

Anger? or this force of Reaction of Discomfort automatically
pushes life to hurt or avoid the object of Anger?
-In the first part of the book, we have learned that Mind can
create its own Discomfort when events around us do not match
with our private ideals of What Should Be(s).
We also realized that in such cases, though it appears to us that
the source of Discomfort is the other person, who is not behaving
according to our private ideal of What Should Be, the real
source of discomfort is the ideal of What Should Be that is part
of our Memory.
We now know that when such comparison fails, Mind mechanism
creates its own Discomfort.
We have discovered something very important here. From our
observations, it looks like, Reaction to Discomfort, whether we
call it Anger, or Irritation or something else, can only look outside
to find who is the reason for Discomfort.
As Reaction to Discomfort can only look outside, for it, the
reason for Discomfort is always the Trigger which is outside. Do
you see why humans are busy trying to change the other, or
trying to fix the other in some way all the time?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reaction to Discomfort is born blind, it only can see outside
to find who or what is the reason of Discomfort. As it can
only see outside, its fury is always directed towards the
people and things outside, and outside only. The true
source of Discomfort may continue to live undetected
inside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
73

Now, let us move on and discuss how mechanism of Memory

comes into play and makes memory of these Discomforts, a
lifetime of sorrow for human beings.
Q1. When someone talks to you in an insulting tone, specially in
front of others, do you feel uncomfortable? Does Anger or
Irritation (Reaction to Discomfort) wake up at such times?
Q2. What happens when you see the same person again after
some time? Does Discomfort come back again? What happens
when someone merely mentions that person in discussion, do
you feel uncomfortable again?
Q3: Now is it fair to say that the Discomfort, that you felt in past,
has become a part of your Memory? Is it fair to say that contact
with image or name of that person acts as a Trigger, and, on
trigger, these memories get recalled and we feel uncomfortable
again?
What we have just discovered has a very significant impact on
our ability to lead a life that is peace and joy.
Whenever life feels uncomfortable or there is Discomfort, the
mechanism of Mind creates a permanent memory of these
Discomforts and automatically links them with perceived cause
of these Discomforts.
For example, if someone talks to you in an insulting tone, you not
only feel uncomfortable at that time, you also develop memory of
this discomfort that we call Dislike or Hatred.
Now, whenever there is contact with that person, the memory
comes back and you feel uncomfortable again.
It seems as if the nature of these Aversions whether we call them
Dislikes, Hatreds or Envies is of energy or force. Once they get
created by the mechanism of Mind, these energy centers live

74

with us as part of our lives.

Why do we say so?
Without energy, there is no force and without force nothing can
ever move in this universe.
We experience that when an Aversion, for example Hatred,
wakes up, it packs certain force that automatically pushes life in
certain Known direction. It moves thoughts and human action in
certain direction and certain known direction only.
Secondly, whenever an Aversion lives, the associated
Discomfort is recalled and human feels uncomfortable again.
Can a person full of Dislikes, Hatreds and Envies ever be
peaceful? Can a person who is living with a bundle of energies of
Discomfort, would ever experience peace and joy?
Looks unlikely as nature of every piece of Aversion is similar to a
lifetime of sorrow. It lives with a human being and keeps making
him/her uncomfortable again and again (whenever there is a
trigger).
Human, who is led by goals of Aversions, is busy hurting, fixing,
trying to change the other, trying to destroy the other thinking it
would solve his/her Discomfort or it would make him or her
comfortable.
We do not naturally realize that these goals are living
Discomforts. So as long as they live, there is no hope of peace
within.
The question now is, do you consciously create Dislikes, Hatreds
or Envies? Or they just get created automatically, when there is
Discomfort, by the force of mechanism of Consciousness?
Let us summarize what we have discussed so far.

75

DISCOMFORT - REACTION to DISCOMFORT - AVERSION

~~
1. There is force that is Known that moves life away from
Discomfort

2. What is Discomfort?
a. Discomfort is unpleasant Sensation
3. What is the cause of Comfort and Discomfort?
a. It is the basic nature of Life
b. As long as there is Life there would be Comfort and
Discomfort
c. For the Eyes, Ears, Tongue, Skin, Nose and the body,
whatever is pleasant creates Comfort and whatever is
unpleasant Discomfort.
d. The cause is the Routine of Senses and body Sensations
2. Apart from physical reasons, Mind can create its own
Discomfort
a. Whenever life comes in contact with something that is
different from its private Memory of What Should Be,
there is Discomfort
3. Feeling of Discomfort is temporary. It comes and goes away
when the Sensation is gone. It is the Reaction to
Discomfort that is a greater force
4. What is Reaction to Discomfort?

a. When there is Discomfort, Reaction to Discomfort

wakes up, it is in the Content of Consciousness, it is a
basic Routine. This force lives inside all human beings.

76

5. What is the action of Reaction to Discomfort?

a. Reaction to Discomfort does what is Known to it
b. When it wakes up, it tries to find the apparent source of
the discomfort, which it always thinks is the Trigger that is
outside.
c. After it finds the apparent cause, it says I dont want it, I
want to get rid of it
i. Reaction to Discomfort only knows to shout, punish,
cause hurt, harm, destroy or damage the other
d. It also gives rise to Aversion to the Trigger

The CHILDREN of REACTION to DISCOMFORT - AVERSIONS

~~
1. What is Aversion?
a. Aversion is a stored memory that the Trigger has caused
Discomfort
b. Memory of Discomfort is also part of this Memory
c. After it has been created, it lives as an independent piece
of Known
i. It lives as a part of Content of Consciousness
2. What is the Trigger for the Aversion? What brings it alive the
next time?
a. Image of the Object that is stored as a perceived cause
of past Discomfort, is stored as Trigger.

77

i. Image of the object triggers the stored Aversion in

future and brings it alive
b. What is Image of the Object?
i. Image is of the Thing that was the perceived cause of
the Discomfort
ii. Image can be Name, Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch or
anything about the object that caused the Discomfort
c. When the Trigger is encountered, Aversion wakes up,
making Men and Women feel uncomfortable again.
3. What is the action of Aversion?
a. Action of Aversion is one of the the following
b. It only knows to avoid or harm or cause hurt or damage
or destroy the trigger that is object of aversion.
c. Whenever Aversion wakes up, associated Discomfort
also gets recalled
i. Men and women again feel Uncomfortable
d. Every time an Aversion lives, it becomes deeper
i. New Discomfort is also stored with old memory of
Discomfort
ii. Next time it wakes up, Men and Women feel more
Uncomfortable
4. Men and Women are blind slaves of the force of Aversions
that is Content of the Consciousness

78

a. Aversions wake up and force men and women to run like

a robot to relive the shadows of the past Discomforts
b. Discomfort is temporary, it ends. But the Aversion, which
is a Memory, lives on. Aversion is a sorrow that can last a
lifetime, making men and women feel uncomfortable
again and again.
5. Men and Women say, I Dislike this and that thing, I Hate
this and that thing, I Envy this and that person
a. Dislike, Hatred, Envy all are nothing but words for
Aversion
b. There was Discomfort in the past, and there was a
Trigger
i. An Aversion got created for the trigger, that we call
Dislike, Hatred or Envy.
6. So every time there is Trigger and Dislike wakes up
a. There is Discomfort
i. Men and women suffer again and again
7. Every time there is a Trigger and Hatred wakes up
a. There is Discomfort
i. Men and women suffer again and again
8. Every time there is a Trigger and Envy wakes up
a. There is Discomfort
i. Men and women suffer again and again

79

9. Men and Women are busy fixing this person or that person,
this thing or that thing. They are busy running away from
the trigger, they are busy killing this or that, thinking it is the
solution to their resident sorrow of Aversions.
a. Aversion lives on creating more Discomfort on the run
10. Men and Women work hard to increase their sorrow, yes
they work hard whole life to increase their Sorrow
11. What can Men and Women do, it is the Known that lives?
a. Whenever

there

is

Discomfort

you

would

feel

uncomfortable
i. Let there be awareness that all Discomfort are
temporary, they all go away
12. In this awareness, let men and women sit with Discomfort
and do nothing.
a. Do Nothing does not mean doing nothing
i. It means doing nothing that blind Reaction to
Discomfort demands you to do
ii. It means not running away, not causing harm to other,
not shouting, not killing

iii. It means sitting with Discomfort until it ends naturally

1. All Discomforts are temporary, they all go away
iv. When Reaction to Discomfort sacrifices its urge to
Violate the other, it does not create Aversion

80

v. Discomfort goes away after sometime.

1. The fruit of sacrifice saves men and women from
lifetime of sorrow of Aversions
13. Did the wise men and women say, Forgive when other
makes you feel uncomfortable?
Consolidation Questions - Observe while living your life
Q1. Become aware of the force of Aversion and Reaction to
Discomfort as you live your life and conduct your business of
living.
Whenever Aversions (Dislike, Envy, Hatred) wakes up try to
Identify the Trigger that has invoked this Aversion. Try to be
attentive and observe how you feel, what you think and what you
do. Try to observe and experience the force of the Aversion when
it takes place inside you.
Q2. While living your daily life, be attentive and observe what
takes place when you feel uncomfortable (pain, discomfort
anything) or someone makes you feel uncomfortable for the first
time ( Not happened earlier). Try to notice what takes place in
your body, thoughts and actions space?
Try to notice if, after the incident, do you now have a new
Aversion to the perceived cause of your Discomfort?

81

Chapter 10 - Comfort - Desire Craving

In the last chapter, you learned about one of the fundamental
forces of human Consciousness, namely, Reaction to
Discomfort. You also learned, how this fundamental force creates
thousands of lifetime of sorrows of Aversions inside a human
being, which become integral part of Known and content of living
Consciousness.
This chapter introduces another fundamental force, namely, force
of Desire, and a set of secondary forces of Cravings and
Goals of Desire.
Let us now investigate the nature and fundamental ways in
which this force works.
Q1. When you look at a beautiful house, or something beautiful,
the next moment, do you feel Desire to own that kind of house or
that beautiful thing? Or, when you really like something that you
are eating, do you feel like eating a little more of that?
-When we see something beautiful and we feel very good, there
is pleasure. We notice that, the next moment, there is an
automatic urge to extend that pleasure. We notice that, the next
moment, there an automatic urge to own that object that we think
is the source of that pleasure.
There is a fundamental piece of Known that lives inside the
contents of Human Consciousness. Feeling good or feeling of
Comfort acts as a Trigger for this piece of Known. So when a
human feels good for any reason, this piece of Known gets
triggered and becomes the center of Thinking process.

82

The Known action of Desire is either try and own the object of
pleasure or try and extend the contact with object of pleasure.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a Known force, namely Desire, that lives inside
all humans. It gets triggered whenever there is Comfort or
when human is feeling good. When it wakes up, it can only
do what it knows. The action is either to try to extend the
pleasure or try to own the object of pleasure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We now understand that whenever life feels good or there is
sensation of Comfort, a piece of Known that is integral part of our
being, our content of Consciousness, gets Triggered and comes
into being. We have called that piece of Known as Desire.
Let us now investigate how does it affect our life.
Q1. Can you name couple of your goals that are of nature of
acquiring some future state of pleasure? [These goals could be
achieving some position, achieving some title, achieving certain
amount of wealth, achieving certain body type, acquiring a
beautiful house, vacation etc, they could also be achieving
some imaginary pleasurable state in afterlife.]
Q2. For each of the goals that you have listed above, try to
investigate how these goals came into being? Why did you start,
or what made you start on a particular goal of Desire?
The reason Desire came into being was that life felt good at
some point of time.
Several things can make life feel good, it could be a real object
that gave pleasure or it could very well be an imaginary
description of a place filled with Known pleasures, it could also
be imaginary idea of Pleasure that a thing or object would give if

83

you achieve that.

So an article in a magazine or an advertisement or a social talk
can evoke desire to buy an expensive car, or goal to become
CEO, achieve fame, achieve certain definition of beauty, or even
a desire to achieve some imaginary pleasurable state of afterlife.
Ever wondered why advertisements are filled with images of
pleasure? Ever wondered why descriptions of the kind of
afterlife you should aspire for contains only pleasures that are
Known to human beings?
You can notice that all these descriptions and imagery link to
pleasures that are Known and are part of Memory.
On contact with Trigger, which are images, words, Memory of
Known Comforts gets recalled, and there is Comfort, the life
starts feeling good.
As there is Comfort, the resident force of Desire gets triggered, it
looks out and does what it Knows. It creates an automatic urge
to acquire the object that Triggered the comfort (It does not
matter if it was an imaginary idea or it was a real thing). A new
Goal of desire gets created.
Along with Desire, which is a fundamental force, these goals are
also of the nature of energy/force and they live with us similar to
our right and left hand.
The nature of these energy centers, these living forces is to push
the life in a direction to acquire what they want.
Now the Goals live and use human life energy. The human now
works hard, months, years or even a lifetime to chase what the
child of Desire wants.
So humans go to office, run enterprises, get busy with rituals to
achieve a Goal of Desire.

84

As a human being, I think I am living, but it is the Goal that lives

and uses all my life energy to live and I am not even aware of it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was Comfort or life felt good at some point of time,
Desire came into being and a Goal was created to achieve
the object of Desire. Now the Goal lives and occupies
whole life energy to achieve its objective.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us now see an interesting aspect of achievement of Goals of
Desire.
Q1. Do you remember last time when you achieved one of your
Goals? How did you feel that time? How long did the happiness
last? Did the new goal replace an old one?
Have you ever wondered why the pleasure of achievement
seldom matches up with the effort you have put in to achieve
something? Why it does not last for more than a limited time?
Desire is born blind. It does not Know that the object of Desire
may or may not give comfort or Pleasure. The fact was that there
was Comfort and then the Desire was born.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Desire thinks that achieving or acquiring the Object will
give pleasure, it does not Know, it was born because there
was pleasure. Pleasure was the Trigger that made the
Desire come into being.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can now see that Desire can never be fulfilled. Why?
Because it is of the nature of Memory, it is in the content of
Human Consciousness.

85

Whenever there is Comfort, Desire would wake-up and would

again push life to create a Goal of acquiring another object. You
may achieve one object, but it is not the object that you Desire
for, Desire is there, it is integral part of your being as your right or
left hand is.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Desire can never be fulfilled as it is of the nature of
Memory. Even if human is able to achieve a Goal of Desire,
next time, there is Comfort, Desire would wake up and
create a new goal of Desire. This time for a new Object and
life would again get busy in a race to acquire that new
Object.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us move on to another interesting fact of Pleasure or
Comfort when it becomes Memory.
In part I, we have seen that the pleasures that we experience
become memories. When life comes in contact with image of
object that gave us pleasure in the past, there is an urge to relive
the pleasure again.
We have seen, during earlier experiments, that when we see a
box of sweet or cake that we really like, we feel like buying it
again, we feel like eating the thing again that gave us pleasure in
the past.
Is it fair to say that nature of these memories is like a Craving to
relive the past pleasure?
As it is of the nature of Memory, whenever there is associated
Trigger, it wakes up and there is Comfort again. As there is
Comfort, Desire wakes up and want to live that pleasure again.
The Craving for perceived object of pleasure becomes an
integral part of contents of Human Consciousness.

86

This memory is of the nature of force as whenever Craving

wakes up, humans get pushed automatically to behave in a
certain way and certain way only.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Memory of Pleasure gives rise to Cravings. On a Trigger,
whenever a Craving wakes up, it recalls Comfort that was
felt the last time. The feeling of Comfort wakes up Desire to
relive the old pleasure again. Human craves for old
pleasure again and again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us look, how the fundamental forces of Desire and
Cravings have been used by the ones who know to exploit
human beings since time immemorial.
Let us try to understand how it works by an example.
When I was young, I saw a billboard showing beautiful Women
and Men having fun. It was carefully designed to make me feel
good and yes, there was feeling of Comfort (Contact with any
beautiful scene, voice, or imagination of pleasure can do that).
As there was Comfort, it triggered Desire. Desire woke up,
looked out and saw the billboard. It displayed Men and Women
were smoking and there was a packet of Cigarette boldly
displayed and a message that suggested that smoking that
brand of Cigarette is the reason why there is pleasure.
Force of Desire pushed the life and I started smoking. Gradually,
it became Craving that we call addiction.
There is also a fact of physical dependence that narcotic
substances create that make it extremely difficult to quit an
addiction. Now there are two forces that work to keep me
addicted, one that of Craving and another that of physical
dependence.

87

Q1. Do you see several advertisements around you trying to

invoke scene of some kind of pleasure and subtly associating a
product with that scene? Ever wondered why there are always
beautiful models displaying a product?
Q2. Does it create an urge to own the product or consume the
product?
There is pleasure and then there is an urge to own the perceived
object of pleasure. Humans get led like a robot to chase the
things that may not be the real reason why they felt comfortable
in the first place. And one is not even aware of this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The blind force of Desire pushes human beings to be led
like robots to chase things that may not be the real reason
why they felt comfortable in the first place.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Human life energy is engaged in either reliving old memories of
pleasures (Cravings) or busy chasing things that are imagined to
give pleasure in future.
The problem is not that it is taking place, the problem is that one
is not even aware of this.
Let us summarize what we have realized in this chapter.

88

COMFORT - DESIRE

~~
1. There is force that is Known that moves life towards Comfort
2. What is Comfort?
a. Comfort is pleasant Sensation
3. What is the cause of Comfort?
a. It is the basic nature of Life. As long as there is Life there
would be Comfort and Discomfort

b. For the Eyes, Ears, Tongue, Skin, Nose and the body,
whatever is pleasant creates Comfort and whatever is
unpleasant Discomfort.
4. Mind mechanism can also create its own Comfort
a. Human has memory of past Comforts or Pleasures, that are
associated with words, sounds and images that act as
Triggers to these memories of old Comfort.
i. Whenever

there

is

related

Trigger,

human

feels

comfortable again

5. Feeling of Comfort is temporary. It goes away when the

Sensation is gone. It is the Desire that is a greater force
6. What is Desire
a. Whenever there is Comfort, Desire wakes up, it is Content
of Consciousness, it is a basic Routine. Feeling of Comfort
acts as a trigger to this piece of Known.
b. What is the action of Desire
i. When it wakes up it says I want it, I want more of it

89

ii. It doesnt like sense of Comfort to go away

1. It wants the pleasure or Comfort to stay forever.
iii. It also gives rise to goals of Desire that keeps a human
busy in chasing things that human thinks, or made to think,
were the cause of Comfort
7. Desire can never be fulfilled
a. Nature of Desire is that of Memory
b. Every time there is Comfort, Desire, which is a Memory,
would get Triggered again.
c. When Desire wakes up, it does not know that there was
Comfort and that is why Desire came into being.
d. Desire thinks, the object that is seen outside is (always) the
reason for Comfort
i. And it wants to acquire that object, it sets up a goal to
achieve that object of Desire
e. Even if that Goal is achieved, next time there is Comfort,
Desire would again wake up and set up a new Goal.
i. Again making life energy slave of its force
8. So humans are busy acquiring this or that product, achieving
this or that state of body or mind or even working hard to
achieve some imaginary state, name, fame or even an idea of
a certain definition of pleasurable afterlife.
a. Human lives, unknowingly, become slave of these goals,
races and urges and one is not even aware of it

90

CHILD of DESIRE - CRAVING

~~

1. What is Craving?
a. Craving is a memory that there was Pleasure.
2. How a Craving gets created?

a. Whenever there is Comfort or Pleasure, Mind mechanism

creates it's memory.
3. What is the Trigger for the Craving? What brings it alive the
next time?
a. Image of the Object that is stored as a perceived cause of
past Comfort, is stored as Trigger.
i. Image of the object Triggers the stored Craving in future
and brings it alive
ii. When the Trigger is encountered, Craving wakes up,
making Men and Women feel comfortable again.
4. What is the Action of Craving?
a. Action of Craving is an urge to re-live the past Comfort or
Pleasure that is in the Memory
i. Craving is blind, it just wants pleasure and pleasure alone
1. Craving can not see anything but what it craves for
2. If the Trigger, does not want to give it pleasure
a. It can be violent
3. It does not care if other has to go through excruciating
Discomfort or even death for repeat of its pleasure

91

5. Men and Women are blind slaves of the force of Cravings

a. Cravings wake up and force men and women to run like a
robot to relive the shadows of the past pleasures
6. You say - I like so and so person or this or that thing.
a. Do you like the person or the pleasure s/he gives?
b. Do you like the thing or the Pleasure it gives
c. Do you like the person or is it more like Craving for the
pleasure s/he gives is part of Content of Consciousness?
d. Would you still like him/her, if s/he caused displeasure,
heaped insults or created Discomfort?
7. As Craving is born blind, it cant see others may suffer
because of its urge
a. It is not bad to live pleasure a million times
b. But should a Craving, which exists only in Memory, violate
the other, cause real Discomfort?
8. What Men and Women can do, Known is the one that is
living?
a. Let men and women realize, it is just a piece of Memory
that has come into being.
b. In that realization, let the Craving not cause real Discomfort
and violent death to other life
9. The Urge is strong but the Wise Men and Women are
stronger. They live pleasures but not let Craving cause
discomfort, destruction and death to the other.

92

Consolidation Questions - Observe while living your life

Q1. Become aware of the force of Craving as you live your life
and conduct your business of living. Whenever Craving wakes
up, ask yourself what was the Trigger that has invoked the
Craving? Try to observe and experience the force of the Craving
when it takes place.
Q2. While living your daily life, observe what takes place when
you feel comfortable or someone makes you feel comfortable.
What takes place in your body, thoughts and actions space?
Does a new Craving or Goal of Desire get created?

93

Chapter 11 - Ego - The IMAGE I

Last two chapters discussed the forces propelled by feeling of
Comfort and Discomfort and how these forces push human
Thought and Action in a particular direction. These two forces are
Known and integral part of Content of Human Consciousness.
This chapter discusses another important piece of Known
namely Ego or the Image-I, which is also a fundamental force.
The chapter also discusses Attachments, which are secondary
forces that live their independent lives once they are created.
Both of the Ego and Attachments are Known and are integral
part of Content of Consciousness.
Let us first explore basic building blocks of Image-I
Q1. Ever wondered, how do you know your name is So and So,
how did you come to known about it?
When a child is born, parents name the child and start calling
him/her with that name. Child hears the Sound of that name
again and again. A memory is formed of this Sound.
Next time, when child hears the same sound (of the name),
sound of the name becomes a Trigger, and this piece of Known,
the memory of name, comes into being and looks out. Gradually,
the images learns that I need to look in the direction of this
sound, it learns that it is my name. This image forms the center,
around which a piece of Mind, a piece of Known, grows, which
becomes Ego, the Image-I.
Let us explore this a little more.

94

Q1. How did you come to know that you are so and so religion,
so and so nation, so and so group or title etc...? How did you
come to know, you should be respected and people should treat
you in such and such manner?
Gradually, every time the image wakes up on Trigger, the image
learns from society who it is and how it should be treated and
greeted, what it should do etc
The image gathers a lot of What Should Be(s) about itself, from
society, as it grows up. Next time, it wakes up on Trigger, it
wakes up with all it knows. It wakes up with memory of all it has
learned from society about Who am I, how should I behave,
how should I be treated and what kind of behaviour I should
indulge in.
Now let us look at an Interesting phenomena that life of this
Image gives rise to.
Q1. Say it is nice afternoon and sun is shining bright. Would you
be upset or angry if someone comes along and says It is not
day, it is night? Would you feel excited when someone says It is
afternoon?
Q2. Do you feel excited and really good if someone calls you
good, intelligent and smart? Do you feel angry and upset when
someone calls you a FOOL? Why do you think it is so?
-In Part-I of the book, we have learned that, when a piece of
Known, a piece of the Mind, comes in contact with something
that is not in line with its private ideal of What Should Be(s), Mind
mechanism creates Discomfort. We have also learned that
whenever there is Discomfort, fundamental force of Reaction to
Discomfort wakes up.
Could it be that when someone calls me a Fool, first the Image-I

95

wakes up (he called my name), then the comparison fails with

stored Idea of What Should Be (that I should be respected) and
there is Discomfort. As there is Discomfort, Reaction to
Discomfort (what I call Anger) wakes up and starts doing its thing
(shouting, hurting, trying to fix the other etc)?
Now, let us look at some interesting pieces of Known this image
gets Attached to.
Q1. Are you attached to your near and dear ones, say your
children, your parents, your siblings, your spouse etc? Are you
also attached to your religion, nation, group, your ideas, your
house, your things, your birthplace etc?
Q2. Have you ever wondered why you feel Attached to certain
things and people? and not to other things and people?
Whatever you call your own, whatever you call my or mine, an
Attachment gets created for the object you call Mine.
Attachment is Memory that some person or thing is mine. It is a
piece of Known that works in a certain way and certain way only.
Let us explore a little more about how what is Known Action of
Attachment.
Q1. How do you feel and what takes place inside you, when
someone you are attached to has gone out and is late to come
back home? Especially, when there is no way to contact that
person?
Q2. Do you feel similarly anxious, when someone you do not
know is late to come home?
Q3. Have you ever cried when someone you are attached to has
died? Do you ever cry when someone you do not know dies?
Death is death, why do you think it is so?

96

Let us summarize what we have discovered in this chapter.

The Image-I

~~
1. Which piece of Known comes into being when someone
calls you by your name?
a. Name is a Trigger and piece of Known is the Image-I,
the Ego

2. Image-I is an Image which is part of the Content of

Consciousness
3. What is the source of this Image-I?
a. It is Social Conditioning
b. When baby is born and s/he is named
c. When s/he is called with that name
i. Name is the Trigger and the Memory of that name
wakes up and lives
1. Gradually, Image-I which starts with memory of
Name, grows around this center
ii. Name is part of the Known of the Image-I
d. Then the society tells - You belong to so and so group
i. So the image knows it is so and so religion and so and
so nation
e. Then the society tells - You are so and so title
i. So the image knows it is so and so title
f. Then the society says - You should become so and so

97

then you would be called good

i. So the image desires that it should become so and so
1. Image works hard to become so and so
ii. Image learns how it should be treated, greeted
1. Image is upset when it is not treated and greeted as
such
4. As I, the IMAGE, does not know it is a piece of Known
a. It seeks its identity through feedback from others and
through Attachments
b. It wants to hear from others who am I
i. It gets happy when someone says you are good
ii. It gets upset when someone says You are a fool
iii. As it does not know, who am I, it works hard to tell
others how good I am
iv. As it does not know, who am I, it works hard to
establish a good image in others memories
5. Why Image-I is a like a fundamental force?
a. Though not real, it drives human action
b. In most of the human beings, a majority of life energy
goes to live the Goals and life of the Image-I.

98

ATTACHMENTs of the EGO

~~
1. What is an Attachment to Ego, the Image-I?
a. Image I is hollow as it only exists as an Image
b. It only knows itself through the things it thinks it owns
c. So it seeks its identity through things, that it thinks are
mine
a. Any thing it calls Mine or My, it creates an Attachment
to that thing
b. Attachment, after it is created, takes an independent life
as a piece of Known
i. After that it lives in Memory, as part of Content of
Consciousness
c. Ego works hard to create Attachments to hide the hollow
d. It is afraid to lose Attachments as it is nothing without the
Attachments
6. When Attachment comes into being (Becomes active on
Trigger), the Action is Known, it is one of the following
a. Attachment cares for the object it is attached to
b. Attachment feels proud when someone praises the object
of attachment
c. Attachment is anxious and afraid for the safety of the
object of attachment

99

d. Attachment is Angry when someone talks ill about the

object of attachment
e. Attachment cries when the object it is attached to is gone
or dies
f. Attachment feels lonely without the attached
g. Dependence, Anxiety, Fear, and Sorrow of loss are
sorrows of attachment
h. Men and women say, I am attached to this and this
person, I am attached to this and that place, I am
attached to my religion, I am attached to my nation
i. Is it a fact that they are attached, or, the fact is more
like, they are nothing but Attachments?
7. Do you feel upset and angry when someone says - It is a
day, when in fact it is night? Why do you get angry when
someone calls you a FOOL?
a. You know for a fact that it is a Day. As the fact is known,
it does not matter whether someone says it is a day or it
is a night.
b. If the IMAGE-I really knew, who am I, will it get upset if
someone calls it a FOOL? Or will it start dancing like a
robot when someone calls it smart and intelligent?
i. Ego (The Image-I), Attachments, and Ignorance of Ego
that it is nothing but a piece of Memory, is integral part of
Content of Consciousness

100

Consolidation Questions & observations

Q1. How much time of your life goes in living the What Should
Be(s) of Image-I that society has given you? [Chasing prestige,
conforming to certain image of How an ideal person should be
or trying to establish a good image of yourself in other's eyes?]
Q2. Become aware of the movement of Attachments. Specially
be attentive when you feel anxious for a loved one or a loved
thing. Try to investigate, what was the trigger that brought this
Attachment to the center? What is the action of Attachment?

101

Chapter 12: Goals of Known

Goals are important drivers of many actions we are engaged in
during our business of living. This chapter explores, how these
Goals come into being and what is the mechanism of their
existence.
Goals are living pieces of Known and the mechanism of their
creation is also integral part of Content of Consciousness.
We have now learned several fundamental kind of pieces of
Known that live with us similar to our hands that lives with us.
We have also learned that every piece of Known has an
objective to achieve. For example, nature of Desire is to want to
own or get the object of Desire, Aversions want to hurt or destroy
the object of Aversions, Attachments want to ensure Attached are
safe, secure and are in good shape, Fears want to get away
from the objects of fear and nature of What Should Be(s) is to
want to enforce their private ideas on the world etc
Let us now investigate where and how our life energy
automatically gets engaged in the Goals and objectives of these
pieces of Known.
Q1. Write down 5 Goals that you are actively working on in your
life. Goals are something that you want to achieve in future.
These goals could be What you want to become, How you
want to look, What do you want your children, spouse, or
siblings to become, What kind of world you are working to
shape etc.
Q2. For each of the goals that you have listed above, try to
investigate how these goals came into being? Why did you start,
or what made you start on a particular goal? Can you identify

102

which kind of Known your objectives are linked to?

Every living Known creates its Goals and once they are part of
the Content of Consciousness, they occupy whole life energy to
live their lives. For example, when Desire comes into being, it
creates a Goal to achieve its object of Desire. It is very similar in
case of Aversions, Attachments, Ego and What Should Be(s).
As we explore the kind of activity we are busy with in our lives,
we can clearly see it is the Goals of the Known that are living
their objectives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of human life energy is invested in Goals of the
Known. I think I am living, but it seems, it is the Goals of
the Known that are living. They are using my body and all
of my life energy to achieve their objectives.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us explore an interesting side effect of life of Goals.
Q1. When you work to achieve a goal, do you dislike when other
people come in the way of achieving your goals? Have you
created Aversions to these people, who you think have come in
the way of your goals? [Aversions can be Dislike, Hatred etc]
Q2. What happens, how do you feel, when you notice that one of
your peers has achieved the goal you always wanted to achieve,
specially when you are not able to achieve that goal?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Goals create more Known as they live their lives. All
pieces of Known once created behave in the same way,
they wait for a Trigger to wake up. They are of the nature of
force, they force life in a Known direction.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
103

Are you consciously doing it or it is just taking place? Let us

summarize what we have realized so far.
Goal - A continuous living objective of Known

~~
1. What is a Goal
a. When a piece of Known lives, it has a Goal to achieve.
i. The piece of Known creates a permanent memory of
this Goal
1. Goal is a continuous living mechanism of objective
of a Piece of Known
ii. It is a child of another Piece of Known
b. Goal is also a piece of Known that lives independently as
part of Content of Consciousness
2. How was the Goal created? How did it come into being?

a. There was a living Known, which had an objective to

achieve
i. That could not be achieved at the time when it was
alive
ii. So the living Known created a Goal, which is another
piece of Known
1. Which continues to live an independent life
2. It is linked to the same Triggers, original Known is
linked to

104

3. It is linked to same memory of Discomfort or Comfort

that was living when Goal was created
3. If a Goal is a child of Discomfort, as long as Goal lives
sorrow lives
a. Whenever goal is active, Discomfort is recalled and is live
4. If the Goal is a child of Aversion, as long as Goal lives
sorrow lives
a. Goal is living with the memory of Discomfort that Aversion
is linked to
5. If the Goal is a child of unsatisfied Desire, as long as Goal
lives sorrow lives
a. Goal is living with the memory of
Discomfort/dissatisfaction that Desire is linked to
6. When a Goal lives, it can give rise to several phenomena
that are Known
a. When it lives, it is anxious that it may not get what it wants
b. When it lives, it is always competing in a narrowly self
interested way
c. When it lives, and it finds that other has what it always
wanted
i. It feels Discomfort, and creates aversion for that person
1. That Aversion is Envy, it lives as an independent
sorrow
d. When it lives, it only knows what it wants, it is blind to the

105

suffering of others
i. A living blind goal can destroy whatever comes in its
way
1. It has led to destruction of nature, and has caused
great violence
e. When it gets what it wanted, it dissolves, there is
happiness
i. But it is temporary as all Comforts are
ii. Comfort triggers Desire
1. And the men and women want more and more of it
2. The life of a new Goal starts all over again
iii. If the Goal was a child of Egos Desire,
1. Achievement creates Arrogance

2. The achievement becomes an Attachment

7. Men and Women say they go to office
a. It is a Goal that goes to office
8. Men and Women say, I go for such and such training
a. It is a Goal that goes for training
9. Men and Women say - I am working to become so and so,
so and so title
a. They are not working to become so and so, they are living
Goals

106

10.What men and women can do, it is the Known that is living?
a. Goals may be necessary in the business of living. Yet,
they are what they are.
b. In this realization, let it work towards a goal but not create
sorrow of anxiety, fear, envy, aversion and attachments
i. Let it not violate the other and create real Discomfort
for others
Consolidation Questions:
Q1. While you live your everyday life, investigate which one of
your actions are for achieving a Goal.
Q2. Does it cause anxiety that you may not achieve your goal?
Q3. Do you dislike anyone who has come in the way of your
Goal?
Q4. Do you envy someone who has achieved, what your goal
wants?
Q5. Do you fear losing what you have got as a result of your past
goals?

107

Chapter 13 - Consciousness is
Programmable
Conditioning acts as a force that keeps human life within a
limited prescription of conditioned behaviour.
As mechanism of What Should Be(s) is fundamental basis of
conditioning, let us briefly revisit the mechanism of What Should
Be(s).
Since childhood, we learn a lot of Proper Behaviour or a lot of
What Should Be(s) from our parents and society.
For example, you have learned what should be a proper way to
eat, what should be a proper way to talk, what should be a
proper way to dress, what should be a proper way to pray to
your god etc...
In previous chapters, we have learned that the mechanism of
Mind creates its own Discomfort when we come in contact with a
behaviour that is not in line with our private ideal of What Should
Be. We have also explored the nature of human action when this
takes place.
Let us now explore how mechanism of conditioning uses this
inbuilt mechanism of Mind.

108

CONDITIONING - CONSCIOUSNESS is PROGRAMMABLE

~~
1. What is Conditioning?
a. Conditioning

is

social

process

that

uses

inbuilt

mechanism of Mind to guide human behaviour in a given

way and given way only.
2. What is the mechanism of Conditioning?
3. Living Consciousness has a bundle of memory of What
Should Be(s)
a. What is a What Should Be?
i. What Should Be is a prescription of how a thing or
behaviour should be, that men and women learn from
society or from past experience.
ii. What Should Be(s) may be ways that society has
learned over a period of time to lead a healthy and conflict
free life. Such prescriptions help masses live a relatively
peaceful life without knowing mechanism of mind.
iii. Some What Should Be(s) may also be prescriptions
that are not rooted in facts.
1. Once a What Should Be is part of memory, it works
the same way. It does not matter whether it is rooted in
a fact or fiction.
4. Whenever there is Contact with behaviour that is not in line
with What Should Be, there is Discomfort

109

a. As there is Discomfort, Reaction to Discomfort wakes up

b. Reaction to Discomfort, does not know that the real source
of Discomfort is the stored memory of What Should Be. It
believes that the source of Discomfort is the person, who is
not acting according to memory of What Should Be
i. If person herself/himself was taking an action that was
different from What Should Be
1. The action of Reaction of Discomfort is to run away

a. Men and Women keep away from violating What

Should Be
b. They feel Guilty
c. They punish themselves
2. The force of What Should Be keeps them within the
narrow lane of Conditioned Behaviour
ii. If it is the action of the other, that is not in line with What
Should Be
1. Reaction tells other to change, it shouts on the other, it
punishes the apparent source or violates the other,
whatever is possible
c. What is the potential source of this Discomfort?
i. Source can be a direct source
1. Men and women are punished for not behaving
according to What Should Be

110

ii. Source can be an indirect source

1. Men and Women have seen others getting punished
for not behaving according to What Should Be
iii. Source can be an imagined source
1. Men and Women can be told stories of imaginary
excruciating Discomfort they may face, in this life or
afterlife, if they do not behave according to What
Should Be
5. Conditioning Conditions others
a. When a human observes another human not behaving
according to his/her What Should Be
i. It tries to shout, punish the other to change their
behaviour
ii. The action of Violence against the other creates
Discomfort in others.
b. The Conditioning gets transferred
6. What is Civilization?
a. Civilization is Consciousness that is Conditioned in a
particular way.
i. Conditioned with a particular set of What Should Be(s)
b. Civilization is Society, Economic systems, Governance
systems, Religions with their specific rituals, Nationalism,
Ideal

Pursuits,

Ways

of

life.

All

is

Content

of

111

Consciousness.
c. Thus Civilization lives in the Content of Consciousness
7. Humans, for a million years by this mechanisms have created
Civilizations
a. Earlier, there were ancient Greeks with their own ideas of
God, Rituals, Ideas of afterlife, Ideals and their own set of
What Should Be(s), now there are new avatars.
8. At the root of it is the mechanism of Conditioned Content,
which is integral part of Content of Human Consciousness
9. Ignorance of the fact is also in the Content of Human
Consciousness
10.The problem is not that there are What Should Be(s). The
problem is that one is not aware of it. As one is not aware,
one merely works as a blind robot pushed in certain direction
by the force of What Should Be(s).
a. When What should be(s) are rooted in facts of life, they
may help humans lead a healthy and conflict free life.
b. When What should be(s) are rooted in fiction, they can
bind human energy in something that is not a fact.
c. In either case, unless human is aware of its mechanism,
human remains vulnerable to this blind mechanism of Mind.
11.What should a human do, s/he is but
Consciousness?

Content of

a. Let the human realize s/he is living with a bundle of What

Should Be(s), and they will create Discomfort when life
comes in contact with a behaviour that is not in line with

112

stored memory of What Should Be.

b. Let the Reaction to Discomfort know, it may not the other
who has caused the Discomfort.
i. It may be the Content of What Should Be, which could be
the real Source

c. In this realization, let Reaction to Discomfort sacrifice its

natural urge to violate the other
d. Let Reaction to Discomfort realize that all Discomforts are
temporary
i. This will also go away sooner or later
ii. Let it wait patiently, let it not violate the other, as the
source of Discomfort may be inside and not outside.
e. It does not mean, not taking any action when there is need
for it, for the safety or well being of life
i.

It merely means not taking the blind action of the force of

Mind

ii. It merely means not violating the other just because blind
force of Mind demands it

113

Historical use of conditioning as a tool to

guide the masses
Over the history of civilization, which is at least tens of thousands
of years old, wise men and women realized the problem of blind
mechanism of human Mind.
They realized that an unaware human being can hurt
himself/herself and the other, for no fault of his/her own. They
also saw that in its raw form, the blind mechanism of human
Mind makes it hard for human beings to live in peace and
harmony together.
One could trace the origin of several prescriptions of how to live
life to the fact that, at some point of time, a set of wise men and
women felt that conditioning human beings with certain set of
behavior could help human beings live a healthier, happier and
more peaceful lives.
One can see that such conditioning has worked in certain ways
to manage the problem. We witness, different levels of conflict,
violence and social harmony in different parts of the world owing
to different set of prevailing conditioning mechanisms.
Nevertheless, one can clearly see that it has only been able to
manage the problem to some extent, it has not been able to
solve the problem or uproot the problem of conflict and violence
created by blind forces of Human Consciousness.
Over the course of the book, one has explored that blind
mechanism of Mind can turn the same set of What Should Be(s),
whatever might have been the intention behind their origin, into a
tool of blindness, hatred, violence and destruction of life.
To repeat, the purpose of this book is not to suggest any specific
kind of appropriate behavior, to endorse or to oppose certain
kind of conditioning.

114

Purpose of the book is to expose the reader to the mechanism of

human life.
In awareness of the fact of life, one gets power to not let the
blind mechanism of Mind control the life. In awareness of the
fact, one can take decisions and actions that make sense.
Consolidation Questions
Q1. While living your life, try to notice the role conditioning plays
in what you wear, what roles you perform at home and office,
how do you behave with others etc
A> During living your daily life, how do you feel when someone
does not follow the specific code of behaviour dictated by your
learned memory of What Should Be [ It can be as minor as,
You say good morning and the other guy does not respond ]?
B> When that happens, what is your reaction (action)? Do you
have choice or your action is automatically pushed in certain
direction by the force of Reaction to Discomfort?

115

Chapter 14 - The Present Moment

Before we move on to remaining forces of Known, we need to
first realize that there is one more movement taking place around
us that is an all encompassing movement of the Present
Moment. It is a movement Unknown.
Now lets explore more about the World of Unknown and its
relationship with the World of Known.
Let us first investigate how our senses connect our life to the
world outside.
Q1. How do your 5 Senses help you connect with the world?
Which aspect of the world they measure for you?
We can clearly see eyes measure light and create visual
experience of the world. Ears measure vibrations created by
moving objects and create Sensation of sound. Tongue helps us
identify chemical properties of matter by creating Sensation of
taste. Skin helps us detect the pressure, temperature by creating
Sensation of touch, heat and cold and nose helps us smell
chemicals in the air by creating Sensation of smell.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our senses act like measurement instruments. They
measure the world around us and create experiences that
we call visual, sound, taste, touch and smell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us conduct a small experiment. It will take just two
minutes of your time, but it is very important that you do this to
appreciate what we are trying to discuss.

116

Task 1. Take two minutes and pay keen Attention to things

around you. Try to listen to sounds, see things, smell the smell,
touch the things and feel the touch.
Have you finished experiencing the world around you for a
minute?
Great! Lets move on and try to answer the following question.
Q1. At this moment, your five senses are connecting with What
is taking place right now or What has already taken place? or
What will take place in future?
We have discovered something phenomenal, while Thought is of
the past (or it may project a future based on past), the Attention
connects us to something that is taking place right now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When we pay Attention, Senses actively connect us with
what is happening right now in the Present Moment.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us dig a little deeper into this subject. Lets call what is taking
place, at this moment, right now in front of you, around you and
inside you as Things and movement of Things.
So, Sounds that are playing are Things, Objects that are
stationary or moving are Things, Living things that are moving
or stationary (human, animals, birds, insects etc) are also
Things.
Q1. Do you realize that there is a World of Things around you?
Q2. Is this World of Things around you part of your Known,
your Memory? Or the World of Things exists independent of
your Known, your Memory?

117

Q3. Is there a continuous movement in the World of Things

around you? For example, are the sounds moving? Are the
objects moving and changing? Are the living things changing,
growing, decaying?
We realize that movement of the Present Moment, which is a
constant movement of things and lives, is always around us.
It is always fresh, new and always changing, never the same
again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Present Moment is an infinite movement taking place
around us. It is always new, fresh, never the same again.
Nothing exists outside the Present Moment. It is an all
containing movement of all life and all matter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lets dig a little deeper into the world of Present Moment.
Q1. Is the Present Moment, Known? Is the Present Moment
part of your Memory?
Even if we had infinite memory, the Present Moment, could never
become part of our Memory. By the time it becomes Memory, the
moment has changed. Only the Past can become Memory.
The Present Moment, can never be Known, it can only be
observed when we pay Attention.
Before we summarize, let us explore it a little more.
Q1. Whatever is Unknown right now, can it become Known
tomorrow?
For example, if you carefully pay attention to voice of a person

118

you are meeting for the first time, can the voice of this person,
that you heard, be part of your Known tomorrow?
Q2. Does it mean paying Attention and Observation is a way to
connect to an Unknown which is knowable? And may be a way
to make it a part of your Known for later?
Let us summarize what we have realized in this chapter.
The Present Moment

~~
1. What is the Present Moment?
a. The Present Moment is live world of things, moving or
unmoving, visible or invisible, knowable or unknowable
b. Nothing lives outside the Present Moment
c. It s always live, fresh and new, always changing
d. The Present Moment is not Known and can never be
Known
i. Memory or Known is of the past. The Present Moment is
living right now. It is present continuous.
2. What are Senses?
a. Senses connect with Things and movement of Things in the
Present Moment and create Sensations according to the
mechanism of Senses.
i. What is Sensation?

ii. Sensation is movement of matter within human brain,

119

caused by the mechanism of Senses. Sensations appear

when Senses come in contact with the Present Moment.
b. What is Unknown?
i. All the Content that is not Known is Unknown
c. If Senses connect to Unknown, it can become Known when
is paid Attention to
d. What is Attention?
i. Attention is lifes ability to connect with a specific
Sensation or movement of Sensations that are taking place
in the Present Moment
ii. Attention connects life with Unknown that is living.
3. There are two movements which can take place in human
consciousness space
a. Either there is movement of Known, or
b. By energy of Attention, life connects with the movement of
the Present Moment
4. In consciousness space, either the Known lives or Unknown
lives.
a. When there is Attention to Unknown, movement of Known
falls silent. In that Silence, Unknown is seen, heard, felt and
experienced.

120

Consolidation Questions
Q1 Whatever is taking place right now, inside and outside you, is
either movement of Known, or movement of Unknown. Does this
statement completely represent state of the world?
Q2. Try to continuously pay Attention to what is going on, you
would realize that even before a minute is over, Thought will take
you away from the Present Moment. Why do you think life is
busy with Known? Why cannot it stay with the Present Moment
even for a minute?

121

Chapter 15 - Fear of the Known

Fear is a powerful energy that drives human life. There are three
kinds of Fears that are part of human consciousness. One kind is
Fear of the Known, the second one is Fear of Unknown and
the third is Fear of Ending.
This chapter explores force of Fear of the Known and the
nature of this force.
Let us investigate this phenomena by answering following
questions
Q1. What takes place inside you when you watch violence taking
place at some place. A kind of violence that puts human beings
at great Discomfort?
Q2. Later in your life, are you afraid of visiting that place? Do you
avoid company of people who look similar to ones who were
being violent (in Q1)?
Q3. Do you know that some people feel afraid of flying in an
Aeroplane? Why is it so?
Memory of imagery of known real Discomfort or known imaginary
Discomfort triggers a force from common consciousness,
namely, Fear of the Known.
Why have we called it Fear of the Known? Because this Fear is
of something that we know, it is Fear of something that is part of
our Memory.
Human Mind, the structure of Known, is afraid of Discomfort and
Ending. The Known Fear is of Discomfort/Ending, the people and
objects merely become Triggers that invoke this resident Fear.

122

So you are not afraid of so and so person, the law, or the

imaginary ghost, the fact is that there is Fear of Discomfort or
Death that is integral part of Content of your Consciousness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a resident Known force, that is afraid of
Discomfort. During business of living, human gathers
memory that such and such objects, situations (real or
imaginary) can cause Discomfort. These objects become
Triggers for the resident Fear of Known
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us investigate what takes place in a human being in which
Fear has come into being.
Q1. What happens to you when some Trigger has invoked Fear?
Do you feel uncomfortable, restless? Does it interfere with your
body and breath?
Q2. What is the nature of your Thought and Action when you are
Fear?
We have all witnessed what takes place when Fear comes into
being. It makes us feel very uncomfortable, there is great
Discomfort and restlessness. We witness a strong urge to avoid
the object that has Triggered the Fear. There is strong urge or
force to just run somewhere else. When Discomfort is severe,
the action could also be violent to the Trigger.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Fear wakes up, life feels great Discomfort and
helplessness. There is an urge to move away from the
Trigger or to avoid the Trigger or to even eliminate the
Trigger that has invoked this Fear.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
123

Do you see that when Fear comes into being, it just takes over
your entire being? Are you consciously doing it or it is just taking
place?
Let us summarize what we have realized from this chapter.
Fear of Known

~~
1. What is Fear of Known?
a. There is a force Known that is afraid of known Discomfort
b. It is part of Content of Consciousness, it lives with all
human beings
2. What is the Trigger to this force?
a. Any Images (Sight, Sounds, Situations), that are linked to
Known real situations of Discomfort in the past can
Trigger this force
b. Any images that trigger memory of imaginary situations of
Discomfort can also Trigger this force.
3. What is the Action of this force?
a. The action of this force is to make human run away from
Trigger, avoid the Trigger or even eliminate the Trigger
that invokes Fear
4. So human is busy running away from objects, people and
situations real and imaginary
a. It may look like that blind action of Fear may save life, but
it, in fact, can endanger it

124

i. As fear has taken over, and life is no longer able to pay

attention to what is going on, it can be dangerous or
harmful to life.
1. Have you heard of humans jumping from 10th floor
of a building in panic when there is fire?
2. Can such blind actions of Fear save life?
5. What can Men and Women do, they are but Content of
Consciousness?
a. Let them realize that I am not afraid, I am Fear and
running away or violating the Trigger will not solve the
problem of Fear
b. Let Men and Women realize that the Fear is of
Discomfort and possible ending and the Trigger has
merely triggered it.
c. Let them now in this realization not close their eyes, or
run away, but take control of situation and take care of
the fact with calm and poise.
d. Let Fear realize Discomforts are nature of life, as long as
there is life, there would be Discomfort at times.
e. When Fear comes to a natural acceptance of the fact of
life, it is end of Fear

125

Consolidation Questions and observations

Q1. While living your life, during moments when there is Fear, try
to pay attention to what is taking place in your body and mind
space. Specifically investigate, what was the trigger? Why has
this Trigger invoked Fear? Investigate which memory of
Discomfort is associated with this Trigger.
Q2. When there is Fear, realize, I am not afraid, I am Fear. In
that realization, stop shivering or running away from the trigger.
Open your eyes and ears wide and pay Attention to what is going
on.
If you are able to pay attention to the facts of the moment,
something beautiful may take place. Try it, and see what takes
place. Your fear may go away for ever.

126

Chapter 16 - Fear of Unknown

This chapter touches on Fear of Unknown, which is another
major shaping force of Consciousness. It is an integral part of
Content of Consciousness.
Pre chapter exercise
Read following instructions carefully and then complete the
experiment. This exercise will take 10 minutes.
Again as in previous chapters, the contents of this Chapter will
make no sense to you at all, unless you complete this exercise.
Please setup an alarm of 10 minutes to know when 10 minutes
are over.
After you have set up an alarm, sit comfortably and close your
eyes. After closing eyes, try to be generally attentive about what
is going on around you so that you do not fall asleep.
You could open your eyes after 10 minutes are over and move
on to questions
Q1. During last 10 minutes when your eyes were closed, were
you able to stay with movement of what is going on, the Present
Moment, around you? or most of the time, it was thought that
was active in the field of Known?
Q2. Why do you think, thought is always going on? And only
rarely, life is with the movement of the Present Moment? Is it
possible that Known is busy with Known because it does not like
Unknown? Is Known afraid of Unknown?

127

When we try to stay with the Present Moment, which is a

movement of Unknown, we realize that at first opportunity
Thought takes us away into the world of Known.
Why it may be happening?
What we observe is a force that moves life away from Unknown
and keeps life busy in the field of Known. From what we see, it is
of the nature of Fear, Known somehow seems to have evolved to
stay away from Unknown, the Present Moment. Author has
named this force which moves life away from the Present
Moment as Fear of Unknown
As we go through following discussion, it would be more clearer
that Known is afraid of Unknown, the Present Moment.
Contact with Unknown is Trigger for this piece of Known, the
action is to force the life to move away from Unknown.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is force which is part of Content of Consciousness,
which moves life away from Unknown, the Present
Moment. This force is Fear of Unknown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us investigate this further to explore the nature of human
Thought and Action when life comes in contact with things
Unknown.
Q1. List things that you do from morning to evening. How many
of these things are Known? How many of these things are
completely new or Unknown to you?
Q2. Is it fair to say that your Schedule is part of your Known and
you keep doing the same things every day. (May be slightly
differently, but broadly same things everyday at approximately
same time.)

128

Q3. How do you feel if something that is Unknown suddenly

shows up and you need to take care of that? For example, you
expect a bus to arrive at 10:00AM but it does not show up,
forcing you to change your Schedule. How do you feel in such
situations, when you need to change your Known Schedule?
Q4. Do you like to go to Unknown places? Or you prefer to visit
Known places only? Even if you visit places that your have not
visited earlier, do you make sure there is enough Known about
them before you go there?
Q5. If you go to a party, do you hang around Known people or
you prefer to talk to Unknown people? How do you feel, if at a
party, apart from the host, you do not know anyone else?
If we observe carefully, we realize that there is certain living force
that is continuously trying to keep our lives in the field of Known
only.
It seems that Unknown is always living in front of us, but the fear
of unknown continuously looks out to find something that we
Know. As soon as, it recognizes something that we know, a
linked piece of Known comes into being and starts living.
Though the Present Moment, the enormous Unknown, is always
in front of us, we hardly are aware of it. The force of Fear of
Unknown carefully keeps the life away from Unknown.
One experiences that there is Discomfort even if life slightly
deviates from the tight definition of one's Known, which is our
schedule, our likes, our known people and places.
One must wonder, what is so interesting about things that are
Known that life is busy with them only? What is so interesting
about living the same schedule everyday, day after day for
weeks, months or even years? Does Fear of Unknown make
sense at all?

129

Again the question arises, are you doing it consciously or is it

just taking place?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This force of Fear of Unknown constantly looks out and
tries to keep life tightly in the field of Known. It does not let
the life stay with Unknown even for a moment.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lets explore something immensely interesting that most of
us have experienced in our lives. Let us explore what happens
when accidentally Unknown forces its way into the field of
Consciousness, and when Fear of Unknown has no opportunity
to resolve that something to Known.
Q1. Anytime in your life, has it ever happened that You were
busy and something unexpectedly touched or poked you from
behind? or when you were busy and someone made a loud
sound from behind?
What takes place during those moments? Is there a complete
shock? Why do you think that happens?
Now you see why Author has named this force Fear of
Unknown.
This force is continuously busy recognizing things and busy with
keeping the life experience tightly within the field of Known.
Now, if an event takes place around you, that this force is unable
to recognize, or has no time to resolve as it has come in contact
completely unexpectedly. What does this force do?
It is so mortally afraid of Unknown that there is almost complete
paralysis.
Do you realize that something extraordinary has taken place at

130

that moment? Known has come to an end, unexpectedly and life

stands with Unknown.
Any movement away from that state is a the movement of
Known, the next moment, life is back with known.

FEAR of UNKNOWN

~~
1. Why is life busy with Known? Why is Thought always active?
2. There lives a piece of Content of Consciousness that is Fear
of Unknown
a. Fear of Unknown is always active, it is always looking out
b. World of things and lives is always there
i.

moving in an infinite movement of the Present Moment

c. Fear of Unknown is afraid of it, as it does not Know it, it can

not Know it
d. So at first opportunity it brings a piece of Known alive
i. Then the Known lives its own life of past, away from
Unknown that lives in the Present Moment
3. What is living mechanism of Fear of Unknown?
4. Movement of the Present Moment is always there.

a. Life is always in Contact with the Present Moment

i. In fact, life is part of the Present Moment
b. Fear of Unknown is always looking out, looking for things

131

that are Known

c. As soon as it recognizes a Trigger which is Known, it makes
a piece of Known that is linked to Trigger come alive
i. Trigger is recognized Content from the Present Moment,
Reaction is a piece of Known
d. When a piece of Known is active at the center, that Known
looks out, thinks, acts and it gets busy with its Known
e. Then a new Known wakes up on a new Trigger and the
procession of Known goes on
f. Known hears, Known watches, Known thinks, Known acts,
Known is happy and it is sad, Known lives.
5. As long as Fear of Unknown is afraid of Unknown, life is
nothing but Known
a. Life is tied to a pole of Known and Known alone
b. Other does not exist, it is not seen, heard, is not cared for.
6. How Fear of Unknown has come into being?
a. May be it is a child of Fear of Ending
b. The Present Moment, which is Unknown is swift, life and
death are taking place at every moment
c. Discomfort with ending may have given rise to this force
i. Fear of Unknown is now an independent piece of living
Known
7. So whenever life comes in contact with Unknown, it runs to its
safety, which is a piece of Known

132

Consolidation Questions
Q1. During business of living, take time to observe your
thoughts. Try to observe your thoughts, what is thought busy
with? What thought is trying to do all the time? Pay special
attention when some Unknown makes you Uncomfortable.

133

Chapter 17 - Fear of Ending

Fear of Ending is one of the primary shaping forces of Human
Consciousness
Pre Chapter Investigation
Read following instructions carefully and then complete the
experiment. This exercise may require some short outdoor
experimentation.
Take your time to complete the exercise, it is absolutely essential
that you first hand experience the Phenomena before reading
ahead.
Goal of this exercise
# Writer is proposing that you have seldom seen things come to
an end. Your Known is not comfortable to look at things coming
to an end.
# Writer is proposing that before you witness something ending,
your psyche automatically moves its attention to something else.
Writer is proposing that it is not very easy for you to continue to
be with with the Present Moment after any Phenomena that is
taking place in the Present Moment has ended.
# Goal of this exercise is to try to observe a real phenomena that
is taking place in the Present Moment. Goal is to observe one
phenomena completely as it takes birth, lives, and ends within
the Present Moment. Goal is also to try to continue observing a
piece of the Present Moment after the phenomena under
observation has ended.
# The purpose is to first hand feel how it feels when The
Phenomena is about to end. The purpose is to first hand

134

experience what your psyche tries to do just before something is

about to end, has ended, and after the end when the Present
Moment lives on.
Exercise
Try any one or more the following depending on what is
accessible to you easily near the place you live. A lot of
situations are mentioned, you need to choose only one or two of
them and experiment with them.
Option #1. If you live near a sea beach, try following
Start observing a Sea Wave as it starts to build up. Continue to
pay attention to the same wave as it build up to the full force.
Continue to pay attention to it as it wanes in force and
progresses towards the beach sand. Continue to pay attention to
the same wave as it ends completely and there is only the sand
left to observe. After the Wave has ended, force yourself to
continue to observe the sand at the place where wave has
ended.
Keep reminding yourself to Stay with the same wave
continuously as you keenly pay attention and observe from
beginning to end and later.
# Be attentive to feel how it feels when the wave is just about to
end, has ended, and after the end, when you try to continue to
observe the space/sand it leaves behind.
# Try this for at the least 10 waves, one after another.
Option #2 You could try this option, if you can observe moving
cars or any moving vehicle in such a way that they stay in front
of you for at least 20 seconds before vanishing from your view. .
Start observing a car or a vehicle as it appears in your view.
Continue to pay attention to the same car as it moves in your

135

view. Continue to pay attention to the same car as it wanes away

from you. Continue to pay attention to the same car as it
vanishes completely from your view and there is only the vacant
place left where car vanished. Force yourself to continue to
observe the space/place where car vanished.
Keep reminding yourself to Stay with the same car/vehicle
continuously as you keenly pay attention and observe.
# Be attentive to feel how it feels, just before car is about to
vanish, has vanished, and after it has vanished and you try to
continue to observe the space where it has vanished.
# Try this for at the least 10 cars, one after another.
Option #3 You could try this option, if you can hear a stream of
medium duration sound that lasts for about 10-20 seconds. It
could be sound of a moving car, vehicle or any other medium
duration sound that naturally takes place in your living
environment.
Start observing a stream of medium duration sound as it
appears in your awareness space. Continue to pay attention to
the same stream of sound as it plays. Continue to pay attention
to the same sound as it wanes. Continue to pay attention to the
same sound as it vanishes completely from your awareness and
there is only the vacant interval left after that. Force yourself to
continue to listen and pay attention to the silence that follows.
Keep reminding yourself to Stay with the same sound
continuously as you keenly pay attention and observe.
# Be attentive to feel how it feels, just before sound is about to
vanish, has vanished, and after it has vanished and you try to
continue to observe the space where it has vanished.
# Try this for at the least 10 sounds, one after another as you
move from one sound, then interval and then to the next sound.

136

Option #4. You could also try the same exercise with flying birds,
falling leaves, floating objects in the current of a river. The idea is
to witness a real phenomena taking birth, living and ending. The
idea is to feel how it feels as you witness the ending and try to
stay with the Present Moment for some time after the
phenomena as ended.
Questions and Investigations
Q1. How did you feel when you tried to stay with end of the
phenomena and tried to stay with the Present Moment after the
phenomena has ended?
Q2. Did you feel Discomfort? Did you find that your psyche was
trying to move away from the scene of ending? Did you feel an
urge to just start looking some where else, may be at a new thing
when the thing you were observing was coming to an end?

Fear of Ending
~~

1. What is Fear of Ending?

2. It is piece of Known and Integral part of Human
Consciousness
3. How does Fear of Ending comes into being?
a. Contact with end of any phenomena within the movement
of the Present Moment triggers this piece of Known
4. What is the action of Fear of Ending
a. It creates Discomfort
b. It forces the life to move away from the scene of ending

137

c. It never really lets anything to completely end for human

psyche
5. In the Present Moment, things are coming to life and end in
a perpetual movement
a. Can Fear of Ending let the life live with the Present
Moment ?
6. The structure of Known is also afraid of Ending
a. End of Thought is End of Known
b. Is it why Known is always busy with itself?
c. Is it why thoughts never seem to stop?
Consolidation Questions
Q1. You know that all life is afraid of ending, this is a physical
phenomena and has value for continuity of life. Does Fear of
Ending, which is purely a psychological phenomena, has any
value in the business of life?

138

Chapter 18 - Ignorance
Ignorance is inability to see a fact that is taking place. Ignorance
of the fact of mechanism of Known, the human Mind, is
responsible for sustenance of the blind structure of Known. It is
responsible for most of the human conflict and sorrow.
Let's try to understand this ignorance through an ancient story.
Say there is a room that has 5 people in it. If you ask one of
them (say Person A), who is ignorant, to count how many
people are there. Person A would look out and count 4. He
wouldnt realize that there are 5 people in the room unless
someone tells him, the one who is looking out and counting is
also there in the room. And YOU are that 5th person.
A piece of Known is similarly born ignorant.
When on a Trigger, a piece of Known comes into being, becomes
active and when it looks at the world, it can only look outside. It
does not realize, it is the one who is looking out, listening,
seeing, feeling, thinking and taking action etc...
It thinks that by looking out, it is looking at the Whole, but it
misses itself, which is also part of the Whole.
It is not merely ignorant that I am a piece of Known, who is
looking out, it is completely ignorant about the fact that there is
a whole world of Known which is living inside. This is primary
ignorance of the Known. Ignorance is a fundamental fact of
Human Consciousness.
Let us explore the subject of Ignorance by answering following
questions.

139

Q1. During your experience of living in this human world, do you

see that men and women are completely unaware that there is a
world of Known that is living inside?
Q2. Are men and women aware that active piece of Known that
is living at a particular moment is primary driver of their thoughts
and actions? Before you started reading this book, did you
realize that the world of Known is the primary driver of all your
actions that you have been taking throughout your life and
continue to take now?
Q3. Even now, when you live in this world, and you see someone
who has insulted you in the past, does the Memory of Aversion
comes back? Do you feel uncomfortable again?
When such Aversion wakes up, are you able to see that the real
source of your Discomfort is no longer the other guy (s/he may
have been in the past) but not any more? At such points do you
realize that the real source of your Discomfort is now living
inside? What you experience now is just a recall of memory?
Q4. Can this stored up memory of Discomfort ever end? Or as it
is of the nature of Memory, is it a lifetime of liability you carry with
you? Every time there is a Trigger, this memory would wake-up
and make you uncomfortable again, and again try to take actions
that dont make sense any more.
-We now realize that the fundamental forces that have evolved
over a million years or more of evolution are automatically driving
the human life in certain direction. the nature of problem is that
the action of Consciousness are automatic and blind in nature. It
is not that we are doing it Consciously, it is just taking place.
It is the Ignorance of the fact, which is also built into Content of
Consciousness, that has enslaved human life in this trap of blind
force of Known.

140

IGNORANCE

~~
1. What is Ignorance?
a. A living piece of Known doesnt know there is a world of
Known inside
b. A living piece of Known doesnt know that it is the one
who is living
c. A living piece of Known doesnt know that it is the one
who looks out

d. A living piece of Known doesnt know that it is the one

who is thinking
e. A living piece of Known doesnt know that it is the one
who acts.
f. A living piece of Known doesnt know that it is the one
who is happy and sad.
g. This is primary Ignorance
2. For a living piece of Known, reason for everything is always
outside
a. As Known looks out, it thinks it is looking at the complete
world (the whole).
b. It misses itself and the world of Known this is living inside.
c. It thinks that the cause of all its Comforts and
Discomforts is outside and outside only
d. So the ignorant Known is busy fixing the objects of

141

Aversions and running after objects of Desires and

Cravings
3. When Reaction to Discomfort wakes up
a. It looks out to find who is the cause of my Discomfort
b. It does not realize that the cause may be an Aversion that
is living inside
c. It does not realize that the cause may be a memory of
What Should Be that is living inside.
d. For this piece of Known, the Trigger, which made the
Known come alive, which is outside, is always the cause
of Discomfort
e. So it gets busy with fixing the Trigger, running away from
the Trigger
i. Creating new Aversions as it lives
f. The real cause of sorrow lives on
4. When the Aversion wakes up and looks outside
a. It does not realize, I am a living Aversion, I am the cause
of Discomfort
b. It can only look out, it finds the Trigger again outside
c. It again thinks, he is the reason of my discomfort, she is
the reason of my discomfort
d. So it gets busy fixing the Trigger, running away from the
Trigger

142

i. Every time an Aversion lives, it becomes deeper

1. Causing more Discomfort when it wakes up the next
time
e. The real cause of sorrow lives on undetected
5. When a What Should Be wakes up
a. It does not realize, I am a living What Should Be, I am
the cause of Discomfort
b. It can only look out, it find the Trigger again outside
c. It again thinks, he is the reason of my discomfort, she is
the reason of my Discomfort
d. So it gets busy fixing the Trigger, running away from the
Trigger
i. Creating new Aversions as it lives
e. The real cause of sorrow lives on undetected
6. Every piece of Known is similarly ignorant about itself and
about the world of Known that lives inside
7. This primary Ignorance is the driver of most of the sorrow of
human race
Consolidation Questions
Q1. Do you realize that there is this enormous world of Known
that is living inside you? Do you realize the Whole also includes
the Known?
Q2. Who is looking out at this moment? Who is reading this
book?

143

Chapter 19 - Self Interest

The previous Chapter discussed primary Ignorance that is a
shaping force of Content of Consciousness
This chapter discusses secondary Ignorance. A living piece of
Known can only see what it wants to see, it is blind to everything
else.
Together, these two fundamental Ignorance are responsible for
most of the sorrow of human race.
Questions and Investigations.
Q1. When you are an Aversion, in other words, when an
Aversion, to someone or something, is active piece of
Consciousness, are you really aware your actions may hurt the
other?
For example, when Dislike or Hatred for someone wakes up, do
humans really care if the other person gets hurt by his/her
actions?
Q2. When you are Craving for a Known pleasure, what happens
or how do you feel when object of your craving says, sorry she or
he is not interested in giving you pleasure right now? Do you
understand or you feel bad?
What are your thoughts thinking at such time? Do humans really
care if other people or nature or animals have to go through
Discomfort or even death so that his/her craving for pleasure
may be fulfilled?
Q3. When you are Desire for some Goal. What happens or how
do you feel if someone comes in the way for fulfillment of your
desired goal? Do humans really care that other people or nature

144

or animals may have to go through discomfort or destruction so

that their desire may be fulfilled?
Q4. When you want to enforce your idea of What Should Be on
other, are you aware that other person may not want to follow
your What Should Be? Are you aware that your actions of
enforcing your private idea of What Should Be can create
Discomfort in other?
Q5. Are you aware that there is a real life which is living in the
Present Moment? Do you realize your body is part of the
movement of the Present Moment?
Do you realize that blind and Self Interested actions of Known
can damage the real LIFE that is LIVING of which you are an
integral part?
SELF INTEREST

~~
1. What is Self Interest?
2. The piece of Known that is living at a moment is Self
a. It is born with an Objective or a Goal
b. It only knows its Goal, it is blind to everything else
c. For a piece of Known, only its goal exists, Other does not
exist
3. All Actions of Known (Self) are Self Interest
a. When What Should Be wakes up and lives
i. It only wants to enforce itself
1. It is blind to suffering of other, Other does not exist
b. When Craving lives, it only wants to relive the pleasure

145

i. It is blind to the suffering of other, Other does not exist

c. When Aversion wakes up and lives, it only want to hurt
the other
i. It is blind to suffering of other, Other does not exist
d. When Desire wakes up and lives,
i. it only wants to reach where it wants to reach
1. It is blind to suffering of other, Other does not exist
e. When Ego wakes up and lives,
i. It wants to attain pride, prestige and protect its
Attachment
1. It is blind to suffering of other, Other does not exist
f. When Attachment wakes up and lives
i. It only cares about the object of Attachment
1. It is blind to suffering of other, Other does not exist
g. When Like or Dislike wakes up or lives
i. It only cares about what it wants to do
1. It is blind to suffering of other, Other does not exist
4. Actions of blind Self Interest are root cause of all the
violence and destruction that human has unleashed on this
planet.
5. What can Men and Women do - They are but a piece of
Known
a. Let the Known Realize - It is Known - It is but a piece of

146

Known
b. Let the Known Realize - There is life which is living, which
is an everlasting movement of the Present Moment
c. Let the Known Realize - It is but a part of that one Life
which is living
d. Let the Known Realize - Nothing exists unless the Life
that is living is kept livable
6. In this Realization of its Ignorance, Let the Known sacrifice
its urge to violate the Other, as Other is Life
a. Let Reaction to Discomfort wait with patience knowing
all Discomforts are temporary, it does not need to violate
the other
b. Let What Should Be, Craving, Aversion, Ego, Interest,
Envy, Anger, Fear, Desire, Goal realize they are but
pieces of Known
i. Let them live life, but let them not Violate the other
7. End of Ignorance leads to end of Human Suffering
a. It is the Known that suffers when it thinks that its
Objective is under threat
b. When the Known realizes it is Known - It no longer takes
itself seriously
c. When there is no sufferer - who is there to suffer?
d. Life lives on with perpetual peace and joy - yes perpetual
peace and joy!

147

Consolidation Questions
Q1. Try to identify one goal that you have that is not of Self
Interest? One Goal that does not have objective to earn Money,
Fame, Power or some imaginary good state in Afterlife or that is
not to protect your Attachments, fulfill the objectives of your
Desires, Cravings and Aversions?
Q2. Try to run through all the actions that you are engaged in
from Morning to Evening, can you identify one action, just one
action that is not related to achieving limited objective of some or
other piece of Known?
Q3. Is there any action in the human world that is not of Self
Interest? In other words, is there any action in human world, that
is not of the Known, of the Content of Human Consciousness?

148

Chapter 20 Who am I?
You have now learned how the blind forces of Content of Human
Consciousness are responsible for shaping the human world.
Fundamental forces are the pillars. On top of these fundamental
forces, Mind creates an enormous structure of Known, though
unseen, it lives with us like our right or left hand lives with us.
We have seen that at the root of it is a blind reaction to Comfort
or Discomfort that life has evolved over a million years or more of
evolution.
Then there is social conditioning driven structure and force of the
Image-I and What Should Be(s). We have also seen that Fear of
Unknown and Ending keeps the life tightly in the field of Known.
Let us now summarize an interesting outcome of this situation,
let us explore what a human being really is.
Human is like an ocean of Known forces and his/her life gets
pushed blindly in a direction of a command of a piece of Known
that wakes up and lives.
So, when Fear wakes up, human starts shivering and starts
running in no particular direction. When Aversion wakes up, s/he
gets busy shouting, attempting to fix the other, killing the other.
When a Craving wakes up, s/he starts running to chase the
shadow of an old pleasure. And then there are What Should
Be(s), gripping the human race in blind conformance of a code
of behaviour that may or may not make sense.
Owing to Ignorance of the fact, it looks as though, Memory,
which is supposed to be a useful tool of life has become master
of life. It would be appropriate to say that it is the Memory, the
Known, that lives.

149

As long as there is Ignorance, I am a piece of Known that wakes

up and lives, and my life energy would only be consumed by
blind and self interested goals of the Known alone.
Then, there is problem of violence, which is merely an outer
manifestation of what is living inside.
The problem is merely not that it is taking place, the problem is,
owing to Ignorance, which is integral part of Human
Consciousness, human is not even aware of it.
One must wonder now, is it all human life is about?
Next part of the book explores life of Awareness, which is a
state of life which can use Memory but it is not a slave of
Memory. That is another kind of Consciousness that human is
not born with but is capable of evolving into.
Let us now move on and discuss a life that is not of Ignorance, a
life that, as a human being, you truly deserve.

150

PART IV: Life of Awareness

In part I, II and III of the book, you explored that Known is a vast
ocean that has come into being by a million or more years of
evolution.
You have learned that Known is living, thinking, taking action and
storing the results of the action in itself.
You have now learned fundamental forces that are responsible
for working and for evolution of Known. You have learned that
these fundamental forces are also part of Known, they are
integral part of Content of Consciousness.
Aversions, Cravings, Ego, Desires, Fear of known, Goals,
Interests, Envies, Attachments, Anger, Frustration, Lust,
Violence, all are Known. Waking, Sleeping, Dreaming, Acting,
Thinking all are part of Consciousness. All are Known.
You have learned that Known is happy when it gets what it
wants, Known is unhappy and sad when it does not get what it
wants. You have learned that reactions to both happiness
(Comfort) and unhappiness (Discomfort) give rise to more
sorrow, which gets stored along with the old one.
Now, one must wonder, is there a life possible for human beings,
which is not a life that is pushed blindly by the forces of Known.
When a human Known realizes the fact of Known, by first hand
observation and investigation, the Ignorance comes to an end.
As Ignorance comes to an end, now the human Consciousness,
in whom, this Ignorance has ended, is capable of coming out of
the blind trap of Known.
Inside a human being, who has realized the reality of Known, this
automatic and robotic movement of Known stops. When a

151

human comes out of the trap of Known, there is special kind of

Consciousness. Awareness, wakes up inside that human being.
Awareness can use Memory but is not slave of it.
Life of Awareness is a state of existence that is beyond the field
of happiness, unhappiness and sorrow that are part of the life of
Known.
When Awareness lives, human is no more a slave of Known,
which is a narrow circle of Self Interest. Inside such human
being, Joy, Peace, Love and Compassion come into being.
Part IV of the book explores life of Awareness.

152

Chapter 21 - Action of Known and

Action of Awareness
Before moving on to the world of Awareness, let us first take a
look at how nature of your actions as an aware human being is
inherently of a different quality from all other humans who are yet
to become aware of the fact of Known.
Lets try to briefly revisit what is the nature of action of Known
and explore what is the nature of action of Awareness.
First let us revisit the nature of action of Known.
Q1. Is it fair to say, when a piece of Known (say Anger or
Irritation) wakes up, it can only take actions which are limited
choices? For example, anger has a known action that is hurting
others, when anger wakes up inside a human being, can s/he
take any other actions apart from hurting others?
Q2. Is it fair to say, when a piece of Known wakes up (say
anger), it has certain force that forces life to act in a certain way
and certain way only?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Actions of Known are Automatic, Limited and Blind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now let us explore an interesting aspect of this kind of action.
Q1. Do you know what is a Robot? Do you know a robot is a
machine, which is programmed to take action in certain limited
ways and certain limited ways only, when a known trigger is
encountered? [Robot is human programmed machine]
Q2. Known is a result of past, it has learned to take actions in

153

certain ways and certain ways only, by the forces of

Consciousness. When a Trigger takes place, Known wakes up
and now it can only take up certain actions that it has learned in
the past (Either by experience or by evolution of life).
A piece of Known can only do what it is programmed to do (by
past). Does it mean that life of Known is similar to a life of a
Robot?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nature of Actions of Known are a result of the past. It is
very similar to a programmed Robot .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This doesn't sound pretty, does it? As one has explored over the
book, unfortunately it is a fact of human consciousness.
As long as there is Ignorance of the fact, the nature of human
action is robotic.
Let us now explore what takes place when Ignorance ends and
human becomes aware of the existence and working of the
Known.
Q1. Say by some mechanism, one suddenly becomes aware
that Known has woken up inside. For example, when anger
wakes up, at that moment, there is awareness that I am Anger.
Now one is aware of the great force that this Known has brought
up with it, which is trying to force life to hurt the other.
Now, in that awareness, can one take an action that is not of this
Known, meaning an action that is independent of the
programmed behaviour of Anger, that is hurting the other?
Q2. In this Awareness, that I am a piece of Known that has come
into being. In that awareness, that I am anger, is doing nothing,
nothing at all, an action of Known? Doing Nothing is like holding
on to the great force of Anger and not letting it move in the

154

direction it wants to move. Is it possible?

Q3. If state of Awareness is possible, in awareness, is life still a
robot of the known that has woken up? Is it still a robot of its
past?
Let us summarize what have be discovered in this chapter.

Action of KNOWN and Action of AWARENESS

~~
1. What is the nature of action of a piece of Known?
a. Its action is programmed by the past of life
i. Learned in this life by past experience
ii. Also learned by a million years or more of evolution of
life
2. When a piece of Known takes action, it is an Automatic,
Limited and Blind action.
3. Why is it an Automatic Action?
a. Brain is programmed in such a way. On a Known trigger, a
piece of Known wakes up and takes action automatically
b. Life seems to have no control on what takes place
c. It is, as if a machine has been programmed to work in
certain ways
4. Why is it a Limited Action?
a. Whatever action Known takes is limited by its programmed
Known.

155

b. Known has learned to take certain kinds of actions only

i. When it wakes up, it cannot do anything else, as it does
not know anything else.
5. Why is it a Blind Action?
a. When Known wakes up, it only wants to achieve its
objective similar to a programmed robot. It has woken up to
do a certain thing. It can not see anything else.
6. What is Awareness?
a. Awareness is another faculty of life, which is NOT active by
birth in most of the human beings.
b. In human beings, mostly the blind Known lives, it is the only
life they ever live
i. In some human beings, another phenomena of life wakes
up and lives that is aware of Known and Unknown
1. This Unknown phenomena is Awareness
7. What is action of Awareness?
a. Action of Awareness is choiceless
i. It is not limited by a set of programmed choices such as
that of Known
b. Awareness can access memory, but, Awareness is not
bound by memory.
8. When there is Awareness,
a. There is awareness that Known has come into being

156

b. There is awareness of the force of the Known, when known

is trying to force certain action
c. There is larger awareness of Unknown, far beyond the
limited goal of the piece of Known that has come alive
9. When only Known lives, it is life of ignorance
a. It is, as if Human is sleeping while s/he is awake
b. Sleeping because true intelligence, which is awareness, is
sleeping
c. It is only the robotic intelligence of Known that is working
i. Existence is limited by the past of human race
10.How Awareness comes into being in humans who are bound
by Known?
a. Awareness can not be brought about by any effort
i. All goals and efforts are pieces of Known
ii. Only when there is silence, Known falls silent,
Awareness comes into being
iii. One can not go to Awareness, Awareness comes to a
human when that human is ready
1. When Ignorance has given way to realization of fact of
Known
11.What helps in preparing ground in which Awareness can
come into being?
a. Observation and first hand realization of the working of

157

Known helps
i. When Known realizes it is limited known, it loses its force
b. Practice to tame the force of Reaction to Discomfort helps
i. When Known is comfortable with sitting with Discomfort,
it is not looking to run away at first opportunity
c. Practice to tame the force of Fear of Unknown helps
i. Only when Known is comfortable with Unknown, can it let
the Unknown come into being.
d. Awareness is essentially a living Unknown inside human
beings, all the above are essential practices
i. Awareness can not be reached by effort, it only appears
when all efforts, all goals, all desires of Known fall silent
12. Awareness is Freedom from Known, it is Freedom from
robotic existence
a. Awareness is True intelligence
i. Until Awareness comes into being, life has intelligence
but limited robotic intelligence of Known
13. Awareness is as if Sun has dawned and in its light now life
can see beyond the limitations of the Known
a. Life can now negotiate both Unknown and Known with a
smile

158

Chapter 22 A Glimpse of
Awareness
To appreciate what the life of Awareness may actually mean, we
first need to get a glimpse of the world of Awareness.
As we have always done during the course of the book, let us
experience, first hand, the peace and joy unknown, that comes
into being when there is Awareness by a short observation
experiment.
We are going to use an observation tool that can assist you in
naturally reaching state of awareness for a brief moment or so.
We have realized that in front of us and inside our bodies, there
is something that is taking place all the time. This something is of
the nature of What is going on.
We have observed and experienced that the Mind looks at What
is going on and automatically compares it with its private ideal of
What should be going on, which is part of its Memory.
We have observed that after the comparison, life gets busy with
trying to change what is to what should be or it tries to run
away from what is into its own security, which is the world of
Known.
Let us now try to experience first hand, what takes place when
Mind, even for a brief moment, gives up its strong urge to
change What is to What Should Be.
Let us try to experience first hand, what takes place when, even
for a brief moment, the Mind, sits in complete acceptance of the
fact of existence.

159

Please allot at least 15 minutes for this observation session.

Following are detailed instructions:
(Want an easier way to use this tool? Follow live audio
Instructions @ http://AwakenYourIntelligence.org/Tools )
First five minutes Quieten your mind a little bit
1. Keep your eyes closed and keep smiling.
2. Try to pay attention and follow naturally occurring sounds
around you from beginning to end.
a. When you notice that there is Thought, just move back to
Sound, do not get busy with analysis of Thought.
b. Try to stay with sounds and sounds alone. You can move
to another sound when a chosen sound ends
3. You would notice that after about 5 minutes, activity of
Thought has decreased considerably.
4. Now, after about 5 minutes, you can stop paying Attention
to any specific sounds and use following steps to proceed
to state of natural and effortless Awareness.
Proceed to Effortless Awareness
Keep your eyes closed, now use following instructions to
consciously become aware of the existence inside and around
your body.

Consciously become aware of your body.

1. Pay attention to what is going on in your body, become
aware of your breath as it comes and it goes. Become aware
of body sensations as they are taking place.

160

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Consciously say in your mind that there is existence of the
Body and that you have no problem with what ever is
taking place in your body. If there is any sensation, or pain
etc..., let it come, let it go, let it flow at its own pace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following above steps, you have consciously become aware of
first part of the existence, that is your body and you have
consciously decided to let go of your natural urge to change what
is taking place in your body.
Now let's move on to second part of the existence.

Consciously become aware of the world around you

1. Keeping your eyes closed, pay attention to sounds around
you and consciously acknowledge that sounds are starting,
playing and ending at their own will, so is the air flowing and
so is the moment taking place at its own will.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Consciously say in mind that there is existence of the
Present Moment that is taking place and that you have no
problem with that.
If there is any sounds or any events occur around you, let
them come, let them go, let them flow at their own pace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now you have consciously become aware of second part of the
existence, the Present Moment, and you have consciously
decided to let go of your natural urge to change what is taking
place in that part of the existence. Now let's move on to third part
of the existence.

161

Consciously become aware of the Mind

1. Become aware that "I am thought" which is thinking, talking
and instructing myself. Become aware that there will be
thoughts that would start, play and go.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Consciously say - There is existence of the Mind that is
taking place and that you have no problem with that.
There will be Thoughts, let them come, let them go, let
them flow at their own pace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following previous steps, you have now consciously become
aware of the third part of the existence, the Mind, and you have
decided to let go of your urge to change what is taking place in
that part of the existence.
# Now, keeping your eyes closed, just sit with natural acceptance
of the whole existence, the Body, the Mind and the Present
Moment.
# Your job is not to modify anything that is taking place, or not to
pay attention to anything particular. Just let the existence around
you, and inside you, take place and let there be natural
observation in an attentive yet relaxed manner.
# Continue natural observation of the fact of existence for 10
minutes or more (You can sit as long as you like).
# After the session is over. Gently open your eyes. After every
session, you would have touched something beautiful that life
has never touched so far.
Let us explore, what you have just experienced.

162

For the first 5 minutes, as you were paying Attention to sounds

and sounds alone, the movement of thought came to an end.
At the end of 5 minutes, there is experience of peace and quite
as most of the thoughts, that were taking place, have quietened.
Now, only one thought remains and that is the one which is
following the Sound (yes that is also a piece of Mind). As flow of
mind has quietened, there is now space for observation of facts
of existence.
Now lets discuss what took place in the second part.
You have realized how mind works, it is constantly judging what
is going on. It gets troubled if it finds things that are not in line
with its private ideal of what should be. And it is afraid when an
unknown appears. That is why there is no peace in the world of
Mind.
You did something phenomenal during second part of the
observation session.
You, which is a process of mind that is thinking, instructing etc....,
decided to let go its natural urge to judge, to change, to fight and
get troubled by the fact that is naturally taking place.
Now, as mind is not busy with any agenda to change,to fight or
run after something, there is silence and space for natural
observation of the fact of existence.
If you sit for enough time, the last remaining process of mind
also naturally comes to an end and when there is no mind,
something beautiful takes place. Now there is space for
Awareness to come into being. Now there is Awareness of
complete fact of existence.
Awareness can not be brought about by any effort, as all efforts,
including desire to reach Awareness, are processes of Mind.

163

Only when, you let go of all efforts, all desires, including that of
reaching Awareness, it comes into being.
When there is Awareness, your consciousness is above the field
of Known. When there is Awareness, Mind becomes part of the
scene, it is no more a blind controller of life.
Awareness is the Seer, that can see the Whole, including the
field of Mind.
Life of awareness is true intelligence. Now life can use memory
but it is not a blind slave of that.
If you make this observation session a part of your everyday
schedule, gradually, your would notice that as your being
observes and realizes the facts of existence first hand, there
would be unknown realizations, unknown peace and joy in your
life.
Initially, Awareness may require you sitting with closed eyes,
gradually, there would be effortless Awareness as you live your
normal life.

164

Chapter 23 Awareness Essential

Practices
By experimenting with tools described in Part II of the book, you
have seen the world of Mind, the Known, and during observation
session described in the previous chapter, you now have got a
glimpse of what it means to be choicelessly aware.
You may also have touched, even though briefly, peace and joy
unknown that comes into being when life is above the control of
incessant movement of Known, the Mind.
For Awareness to become a natural part of your life, not just
during controlled observation sessions, regular practice with
awareness tools is important.
Why is it so?
As you try to live life of Awareness, you would realize that human
brain has come to this state by a million years or more of
evolution. Brain has developed these pathways of Known as
deep habits. In spite of your attempt to be aware, you would see
that Consciousness would move in a direction that is Known.
For example, when Irritation or Anger, or Aversion in the shape of
Dislike or Hatred wakes up, you would initially see that in spite of
Knowing that I am Anger etc.., the force of Known is far too great
to hold.
Writer has described several effective tools of observation, in
part II of the book, in Chapter 22 (the previous chapter) and in
the Appendices.
You could use these tools in your everyday life. Writer has
personally used these tools to come out of the bondage of
Known.

165

As we have been building on foundation of facts and facts only,

Author has also described, rational foundation of facts on which
these tools are based. You can refer to Appendix-1 for details on
why and how these tools work. Based on knowledge of how
these tools work, you could also evolve your own tools as you
feel appropriate.
Specially, author strongly recommends using choiceless
awareness tool described in previous chapter before you start
your regular day. You would realize just 15 minutes of
observation with this tool could give you a strong foundation to
live your day with awareness, peace and joy.
While observing your inner self, you may observe that there are
certain strong energies of Fears, Dislikes, Hatreds that are
part of your being. You may realize that the force of these
energies completely dominate your life and keep it restless,
afraid, angry, anxious or in an uncomfortable state.
If it is the case, you may want to use powerful tools that Author
has described in Appendix-2 and 3 to clean the impressions of
the past that these energies are. Deep Fears can go away to
never return again, deep angers, hatreds, envies all can go away
to never return again.
As these memories of Discomfort are like negative energies that
are living with your being. Every time a deep Sorrow is gone, it is
as if a burden that life was carrying all along has gone away for
good and life can breath a little easier.
Remember, it is hard work. Be patient and keep working on it.
Gradually, with each passing day of practice, you would realize
that your life is gradually moving away from the trap of sorrow of
Known to peace and joy Unknown.
As you live more and more in the field of Awareness, gradually,
you would realize facts of existence that Mind can never reach.
(Mind is but a small part of existence).

166

Chapter 24 - Awareness - Love Compassion

We have seen how energies of Fear, Desire, Aversion, Image-I &
Attachments work and how they move the human world. We see
most of the action of the world is driven by these energies of
Self.
We now realize that we, as human beings are busy with our
narrow circle of self interest. Most of the human actions are in
the field of Known and that has created this world that we call
human world.
Let us now investigate, what is the nature of action of energy of
Awareness. Let us now discuss, what is the nature of action that
is not bound by Self Interest.
First, by an example, let us explore, how ability of Awareness to
see the world is radically different from ability of Known to see
the same world.
When someone shouts at you, if Known takes control, it would
immediately shout back or become defensive. To Known, other is
seen as a problem to either avoid, to solve or to manage.
When someone shouts at you and if Awareness is living,
Awareness can see that a person shouts only when s/he is in
pain. You can now see the pain of the other and take care of it.
In short, Known creates its own pain and gets busy solving it,
Awareness can see beyond the Self and can see the pain of the
other. This is Compassion in short.
Awareness can perceive facts of life directly and take care of
them, while a piece of Known looks at the world from its own

167

colored glasses and tries to protect its self interest alone.

Actions of Awareness are best experienced first hand.
As you live your life of Awareness, can you pick up a problem
and work towards solving it for the entire humanity or nature, in
whatever little way you can?
Can you work towards solving any problem (small or big does
not matter) for the whole of humanity and not just for yourself,
your small circle of family, friends, community, religion, nation or
any other definition of identity that you may have?
Can you take any action completely independent of your self
interest, that is desire to earn money, fame, or a particular
definition of after life?
If you could do any of the above, you would have realized what
action of Love and Compassion really means.
If you could do that, you would realize that there is no sorrow in
such acts of compassion, as there is no goal to achieve for the
Self Interest in that.
As there is no goal of Self Interest, there is no anxiety that you
may fail, there is no frustration of non achievement and there is
no arrogance of achievement that gets attached to Image-I.
Even a simple pure act of Compassion can fill your life with
peace and joy that any action of Self Interest can not touch.
Blind life of Known is a life of Self Interest, Awareness is a life of
Love and Compassion.

168

Concluding Remarks - Path ahead

As you have finished reading the book, now, you truly
understand the fact of Known, which is an enormous fact of
human beings, that is living inside you and all other human
beings on this planet.
Pushed by the forces of consciousness, a human being lives a
life that automatically gets pushed in a certain direction.
Not only the host human unknowingly suffers the fruits of actions
that were result of natural forces, the whole of humanity and
nature may suffer because of such actions.
As long as there is Ignorance of the fact, humans unknowingly
would keep hurting themselves, other humans, life & nature on
this planet, even if these actions don't make sense for
themselves and for the others.
Over the course of the book, we have struck a hard blow on the
force of Ignorance.
As ignorance is the primary factor which is responsible for
sustenance of the blind structure of Known, by becoming aware
of the fact of consciousness, your life has already taken a turn
that is of phenomenal significance to a human being.
If you have been practicing tools described in the book, your
knowledge about the fact is not merely intellectual, it has a
strength of first hand realizations of the living facts of life. You
should now be in a position to investigate and seek answers to
the serious challenges that human race faces today.
Human race faces problem of oppression, suppression and all
kinds of mindless violence that is taking place.

169

Owing to Ignorance of the fact, humans have been living life of

illusions and delusions, and are busy destroying life, nature and
the very fabric of existence on this planet.
Stop and ask, what is the solution of this human situation?
Human life on earth is a product of Content of Consciousness.
Can humans be blamed, when Ignorance is in the Content of
Consciousness that is living?
So what can you do?
If you have seen the fact of existence that is living inside you,
you should be in a position to assist other human beings in
coming out of the trap of Ignorance.
If you think this book could assist someone in graduating to a life
of Awareness, do consider gifting this book on birthdays or other
occasions when you truly mean to wish your loved ones a life
that humans truly deserve.
Author wishes you a life of Awareness, Peace and Joy!

Appendix 1 - Path to Awareness

This appendix discusses broad rational framework of path to
Awareness and freedom from Known.
Specific tools that use this knowledge are described in Part II of
the book and in Chapter 22. You could use the tools, the writer
has described, or evolve your own tools for your practice.

Part I - Root cause of Bondage to Known

1. Ignorance, Fear of Unknown and Fear of Ending is the
root causes of the bondage and Human Suffering.
2. Fear of Unknown keeps life in the unending loop of Known.
3. Freedom is only possible when Known realizes that it is
limited Known and it is the only thing that lives unless
Unknown comes into to being.
4. To come out of this loop of Known, Fear of Unknown must
realize Unknown is not a problem and naturally come to an
end.
5. When life becomes comfortable with Unknown, comfortable
with natural ending, it gets freedom from perpetual trap of
Known.
6. Intellect aided choiceless observation of Facts of Known
leads to Realization of Reality.
7. Realization of the Reality leads to end of Ignorance
8. End of Ignorance and Realization of reality leads to a life of
peace, joy, compassion and love, in a human being where
Ignorance has ended.

171

Part II - Getting to know Unknown

1. Fear of Unknown is the primary factor of Human Life
which is not free from Known.
2. Fear of Unknown, which is Known is always living, looking
out, listening, keeping the life in perpetual loop of Known.
3. Fear of Unknown can not be killed, suppressed by Known.
It must come to an end on its own by realization that
Unknown is a natural part of life.
4. Let the Life take a piece of Unknown, a ROCK. Any piece of
Unknown can be chosen for observation and that is the
ROCK.
a. One such piece of ROCK is flow of naturally occurring
sounds that are flowing at their own pace. A sound starts,
it plays and then ends, followed by an interval, another
sound starts.
b. Let the life observe any sound, that naturally is taking
place, and stay with it, let the life follow that chosen
sound till it ends.
c. Let the life also stay with the interval between one and
another sound.
d. Let the life follow another sound as it starts, plays and
ends.
e. Let this observation go on. This is Hanging to the ROCK
choicelessly.
5. Let the life start and consciously attempt to live choiceless
observation of Unknown (the Rock) and stay with Unknown.
Let life also realize that the one that is observing, is nothing
but a new piece of Known that is living.

172

6. Let the Fear of Unknown be forced to live with Unknown

even briefly or for long. Let Fear of Ending, be forced to
look at the Ending, even briefly or for long.
7. Staying with the ROCK, let life observe the force of Fear of
Unknown, let the life observe Fear of Unknown forcing
the life away from Unknown.
8. Let the life observe as it is automatically forced to move
away from the Unknown (the Rock) to a piece of Known.
i. Remember Thought is attached to this piece of Known
that has come into being. Observation of movement of
Thought leads to Observation of Known that is living.
9. As the Known comes into being, let the life observe the
start and flow of Known, as it lives, and thus realize, parts,
structure and flow of the KNOWN
10.On realization that Fear of Unknown has forced the life
away from Unknown, Let the life again go back to the
ROCK with a smile
11.Gradually, as Fear of Unknown is forced to live with
Unknown, the ROCK, again and again, Fear of Unknown
naturally on its own realizes that Unknown is nothing but
Joy and nothing to fear.
12.In this natural realization, Fear of Unknown gives away
and Unknown naturally comes into being. After which, life
no longer needs to consciously observe the Unknown or
force life to hang on to the ROCK. The ROCK is now part of
larger Unknown, that naturally appears to life.
13.Hanging onto to the Rock, when the rush of the Known has
quietened, let the Known drop any wish to investigate
Known, understand Known, or follow the Rock of Unknown

173

14.Let the Known fall silent, saying I am fine with whatever is

going on, let it FLOW.
15.When the Known surrenders to the flow of Unknown, in
complete acceptance of the flow of the Present Moment, it
no longer seeks, no longer tries to recognize or tries to
understand or rush to some goal or the other
16.When the the last piece of Known, the observer, thus falls
silent, the Consciousness is still, not moving. Now, there is
space for something else to come in and live.
17.In this state, the brain is able to connect with something
that is not of the brain, of the Known, it is able to connect
with the Joy Unknown
18.This state is Silence, the Known is Silent.
a. In Silence, the Joy comes into being
19.This process leads to realization of the Known and that of
the Unknown
20.Realization of Reality is Freedom from Known and
Freedom from all the suffering of humankind.
21.A realized human can handle both Known and Unknown,
fearlessly, and with a smile
22.Eventually, UNKNOWABLE appears at its own will.

174

Appendix 2 - Holding the force doing Nothing

Learning to do Nothing in the face of force of Known is an
important skill in observation of Known. Why is it so? It is so
because, unless you are able to stop Known from moving, it is
the only thing that lives, by holding its force, you get an
opportunity to observe the living Known.

1. Mastering the art of Doing Nothing in the face of great force

of Known is important but how can life Do Nothing in the
face of great force of Known?
b. Doing nothing, does not mean mean doing nothing at all
c. It means Doing Nothing that the force of Known wants to
do
d. For example, when Anger wakes up and and tries to force
the life to hurt the other
i. Doing Nothing means sitting with that great discomfort
of not hurting the other until the force of Reaction to
Discomfort has ended
ii. It means a great sacrifice of Self Interest
e. When What should be wakes up and makes you
uncomfortable
i. Doing Nothing means sitting with that great discomfort
and not forcing other to follow the command of What

175

should be until the great force of Reaction to Discomfort

has ended.
ii. It means a great sacrifice of Self Interest
f. Doing nothing does not mean running away from
discomfort, it means holding it, and sitting with it, until it is
gone
i. Yes all Discomforts are temporary, all go away eventually
14. When you are able to hold onto one such Discomfort until it
ends on its own, and are able to just sit with it, holding the
force of it, doing Nothing, not running away, not drinking
water, or not chanting some mantra
a. When the piece of Known ends on its own, and you still
stay with the ending, something beautiful may take place
b. As a Known that had filled the consciousness space has
ended and Consciousness has not moved on to another
Known, there is Awareness
i. Any movement away from the ending is a movement of
Thought
c. The art and science is to stay with it until it ends on its own
i. Its not easy, it requires practice and great sacrifice of
Self Interest

176

Appendix 3 - Taking care of old stored

up sorrow
During the business of living, an unaware Human
Consciousness automatically creates a large stockpile of
memory of Discomfort.
You may have deep Fears, Envies, Anger, Frustration, Hatred
etc that make you very uncomfortable when they wake-up.
They sap all your energy when they come alive and you seem to
have no control on what is going on.
All of this sorrow is waiting to come alive when life comes in
contact with a Trigger that is linked to that piece of Known.
The Writer has used a useful tool to eliminate several such
sorrows that were part of his being. Writer was introduced to this
tool by one of the greatest explorers of human consciousness,
Mr. J. Krishnamurti, in his book Explorations and Insights.
J. Krishnamurti says, If you sit with Discomfort that a sorrow has
brought up, and do nothing about it, nothing that sorrow wants to
do, nothing to move away from sorrow and nothing that wakes
up another piece of Known. If you sit with it until it naturally
comes to an end, that sorrow ends forever.
Once the sorrow ends, even if there is a Trigger in future, nothing
wakes-up as there is nothing to wake up, that sorrow is gone for
ever.
Deep Fears can go away to never return again, deep angers,
hatreds, envies all can go away to never return again.
Every time a deep Sorrow is gone, it is as if the burden that life
was carrying all along has come down and life can breath easier

177

now.
J. Krishnamurti also says, if you are able to sit with it and stay
with ending long enough, which is very hard for a human to do,
but just stay with it and observe what takes place. Something
beautiful may take place that may end your sufferings for ever.
Following is description of how to use this tool
Experience of the writer says, it is hard to sit with the Discomfort
of Known, when it wakes up in the business of living. For
example, when Anger or Irritation wakes up in live settings, it
is hard to do nothing and sit with it until it is gone.
But, as every piece of Known is part of your being, you should be
able to bring it alive any time using the same Trigger that brought
it alive in the first place.
Sitting at home comfortably, when you have all the time in the
world to sit with it till it ends, you can create the same Trigger by
recalling the incident that brought up anger, fear etc.
When you recall images of Trigger again and again, the same
piece of Known comes into being again.
Once it wakes-up, it will bring all the Discomfort that is stored
with it. You would feel uncomfortable again. Now hold onto this
Discomfort until it ends on its own. Just sit with it, holding the
force of it, doing Nothing, not running away, not drinking water, or
not chanting some mantra.
When this piece of Known Sorrow ends on its own, you feel very
light, as if a huge burden has been taken away from the pile of
Consciousness for ever.
The art and science is to stay with it until it ends on its own. Its
not easy, it requires practice.

178

Appendix 4 - How Humans Deal with

Knowledge
This Appendix explores basic nature of how humans deal with
knowledge.
Let us first revisit basic relationship between actual things
around us and knowledge that we have about those things.
Q1. List two things that you know about Trees.
Q2. Are Actual Things, which are Trees in this question, part
of your Memory, or, the Knowledge of Trees, that you have
acquired in the past, part of your Memory?
[the word Tree, the images of Trees, the sounds that leaves
make when air passes by, smell of Trees is also part of Known
or part of your Memory of knowledge about Trees]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What we know is part of our Memory. Actual things dont
live in our Memory but it is the Knowledge about things that
we have acquired in the past that lives in our Memory.
Things exist independently of our Knowledge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us dig a little deeper into the nature of Knowledge that we
have about things.
Q1. Say, you have read everything, heard everything possible
that other humans know about Trees. After you have acquired all
Known that humans know about Trees, how can you further
know more about Trees? How can you increase your Known
about Trees?

179

Q2. Can we say, knowledge about a Thing is Known. When we

pay Attention and Observe a Thing with Attention, we could bring
more that is unknown about that Thing to our Known?
Q3. Is Known about a Thing ever complete? Or, most of the
times, there would always be something more unknown about a
Thing to be discovered?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By paying Attention and Observation of an Actual Thing,
we can bring more Unknown about that thing to our Known.
However hard we try, there generally would always be
more Unknown that is yet undiscovered about any Actual
Thing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us explore is it really obvious to human beings that Known
about a thing is never complete.
Q1. Say two people together are trying to explore and get to
know a Real Thing first hand,
Person A has some knowledge of Real Thing, person B also
has some knowledge about Real Thing. Which of the following
format of conversation is most useful in getting to know the Real
Thing better.
A> Debate style - A conversation where both A and B try to prove
that his/her knowledge is better than the knowledge of the other
person. Both A and B try to put other down by proving why
he/she is wrong. The purpose of questioning is to win the debate
by questioning other person and his/her knowledge.
B> Listening Style - A format where first A speaks and describes
what he knows and then B describes what he knows about the
thing. At the end of it, A asks questions to B about the
description that B has given, and B asks Questions to A

180

about the the description A has given.

C> Active Dialogue, - Both person A and B realize that it is
The Thing that is important. They also realize that the
knowledge that they have acquired in the past is limited and
incomplete. Now, together, they use both of knowledge of A and
B to get to a better understanding of the Thing
Now, the questions that A is asking B is not about the
Knowledge of B, but the question is about the Thing. Now the
question B is asking to A is not about the Knowledge of A but is
about The Thing.
Now together they explore The Thing, get to better
understanding of The Thing and go back home satisfied and
happy after getting to know the thing in best possible way.
Q2. What do you see in real human world? Are humans busy
debating words and proving my knowledge is better than your
knowledge? Do humans naturally realize that it is the Thing
which is important and not the word? Why do you think it is so?

Looks like it is really not obvious to human beings that it is the

Thing that is important. Let us summarize what we have learned
here.

181

THINGS are THINGS and KNOWN is KNOWN

~~
1. There are Actual Things and then there is Known
2. World of Known and world of Actual Things is different
3. Known is Memory and Things dont live in Memory
a. Word for a Thing may be Known but the Thing is not the
word
b. Description of a Thing may be Known but the Thing is not
the description
c. Smell of a Thing may be Known but the Thing is Thing
and Known is Known
d. Taste of a Thing may be Known but the Thing is Thing
and Known is Known
e. Touch of a Thing may be Known but the Thing is Thing
and Known is Known
f. Sound of a Thing may be Known but the Thing is Thing
and Known is Known
g. Past behaviour of a Thing may be Known but the Thing is
Thing and Known is Known
h. Thing is all of it but None of it
4. Only way to connect to Actual Thing beyond Known is to
pay Attention and to Observe
a. When Attention looks at Unknown (not known), it
becomes part of Known.

182

5. Known is limited to what it knows. So pay Attention,

Observe
6. Known about a Thing is seldom complete, there normally
would always be Unknown
a. When Known does not know this, it is Ignorant
i. Ignorant Known debates and fights, ignorant that it is
limited and incomplete Known
b. When Known is aware it is not complete, it listens
i. Aware Known listens to others Known
ii. Aware Known listens to Unknown
iii. Though not complete it is not ignorant
c. Let the Known know it is not complete
i. An aware Known can leverage the power of Known
and yet not be limited by itself.
7. So become Aware, Listen, Pay Attention, Observe
a. Men and women are busy with names and descriptions
b. Wise ones know, it is not the description that is
important, it is the described that is of value. It is the
Thing that is important and not the word.

183

Consolidation Questions
Q1. Let us assume, you are listening to a speaker. The speaker
has been working with an Actual Thing, which is phenomena
of Gravity for several years. Speaker has first hand experience
of working with that Thing and he understands that thing really
well.
But, speakers communication skills are NOT good at all. S/he is
using bad grammar and sometimes bad pronunciation to
describe The Thing.
Now as you carefully listen to the speaker, which of the following
kind of the questions will help you understand The Thing that
speaker is talking about?
A> You should simply be disturbed by his/her language skills,
how s/he looks or dresses etc... and start laughing and not really
listen to what he/she is saying.
B> You should ask questions that try to tell speaker what you
know and prove how good your knowledge is about the Thing.
C> Questions that try to prove that speaker does not know much
English.
D> As you listen to the speaker, you try to understand and reach
to The Thing speaker is trying to describe. After listening
carefully, you ask questions that would help you reach first hand
understanding of the Thing, phenomena of Gravity, that is being
described.
Q2. You meet a lot of people in the world everyday. When in
group conversation, or talking to another person, which of the
following is the best way to increase your understanding about
the Things, People and the World?
A> You should talk too much, keep interrupting other person

184

actively trying to tell what you know and prove how good you
are. Listening should be limited so that you can ask questions
aimed at proving your point or disproving others point.
B> You should ignore others or if listen at all, sit silently as
nobody really cares about you. Or if you feel very uncomfortable
talking to others it is best to avoid others.
C> Realize that different people live in different places and
conditions. They have knowledge of different kind of Real
Things of the world. Somebody may know agriculture, other
may know law, some other nature of human life, and some
other the world of cooking
So when you meet another person, you listen actively to what
person is saying and then actively ask questions about The
Thing person is talking about. At the end of the conversation,
you would not have proved how good you are, but in fact, you
would be far richer in terms of the knowledge of Real Things
and the world in general.

Appendix 5 - The Human Body

Our first experience of life is Human Body. When we say, we
observe ourselves and others walk and talk and do this and that,
we basically mean that we observe our bodies in action during
these functions of life.
Investigate the Body we must as this is our first experience with
life. Let us briefly investigate the fundamental nature of body and
what it helps us do.
What has become the Body?
Lets first try to answer some questions,
Q1. When baby is in mothers womb, it starts with a size of less
than a micro millimeter. It starts with a mass of less than a microgram. When a child is ready to come out of mothers womb, the
child grows to about 2 kg or more and a height of more than a
feet.
What becomes the body of the child before it comes out of
Mothers womb? Is it the food mother eats that becomes the
body of the child?
Q2. After body is out of the mothers womb, most of the human
bodies grows into a mass of more than 50 kgs and a height of
about or more than 5 feet. What becomes all this mass of body
after the body comes into this world? Is it the food that person
eats becomes body?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The human body comes from food that human eats
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

186

What has become the Food?

With a little thinking it becomes clear that all food comes from
Plants. Even as some humans eat animals for food, those animal
bodies come from eating plants or fruits and flowers produced by
plants.
So the basis of all food that humans or animals eat are plants or
products of plants. Now let us investigate where does the mass
of plants and trees come from.
Q1. How does a Tree or a Plant gather its mass? What becomes
the body of a Tree or a Plant? What becomes Fruit or
Vegetables? Has it come from the matter of the soil? the
sunlight? and the Water?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Food comes from plants and the plants come from
elements of nature and energy of the Sun
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where does the body go after we die?
Humans either bury the dead either in soil/water, or burn them.
Some leave it for the vultures to eat. Body finally decomposes
and merges into the same elements it has come from.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Body comes from elements of the Nature and after death
merges into the elements of the Nature
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Body is a machine that helps us live
With the help of body we are able to live. We are able to talk,
walk and perform functions of life. Without body life is not
possible.

187

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Body is an instrument of life. It is a machine that we
use to live life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is a measurement Instrument?
Let us investigate what is a measurement Instrument and what
does it do. Let us investigate what makes our body a
measurement instrument.
Q1. When you stand on a weighing scale, what does it show
you? Does it show you your weight or it shows you a number?
Q2. Is your weight a number, or the number you see is only
measurement of how heavy you are? Is it more like, how heavy
you are is a fact of the world and the number you see is
measurement of the weighing scale of this fact of the world?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A measurement instrument measures a real fact of the
world. What we see or experience is not the direct fact but
measurement of the Instrument.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What does our body measure for us? Let us investigate how
body measures what is taking place around us and inside us in
terms of sight, sound, taste, smell, touch and other body
sensations.
What is the Sound that we experience?
We experience Sound all the time. Sound of things, of vehicles of
people and many other things while we live our lives. Let us
investigate what is this thing called Sound that we experience.
Q1. When you drop a metal object on the floor (you can drop and

188

see) what do you experience? Do you experience Sound?

Q2. Is it not a fact that when vibration reaches our ear drums and
then our brains, our body, our brain measures this vibration and
creates Sound?
Is it not similar to a weighing scale that gives us a number when
there is weight on it? Is it that our body measures vibrations in
the world, and give us Sound to experience?
We can easily see that there is nothing called Sound in the
universe, there is only vibration.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So we realize that the body brain instrument measures
vibrations in the world and creates experience of Sound.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do we see the world or we measure light?
Let us now investigate what is visual experience that we call the
world that we see.
Q1. Close your eyes, do you still see the world? (Try closing your
eyes and verify this)
By closing your eyes, you have only blocked light from entering
into your body. Just by blocking light from entering your body, the
world that you could see earlier disappeared.
Does it mean that what you see is merely is measurement of the
light that falls on your eyes? So are you looking at the world or
you are looking at what light contains?
Q2. You can see a very complex world around you, up to the
moons and the stars. Does it mean that the light that enters your
eyes already has all the world that you see?

189

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What we look at is not the world but the experience our
body brain creates by measuring contents of light. The
light, that enters our body, has touched the world that we
see. Hence our brain is able to create the experience of the
world from what light contains.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is Taste, Smell, Touch, Feeling of Hot and Cold?
Q1. What is taste? Is it merely the measurement of chemical
properties of food that is on the tongue?
Q2. What is smell? Is it merely the measurement of chemical
properties of the air that enters our nose?
Q3. What is the experience of touch, weight, hot and cold? Is it
merely some measurement of the world around us?
Q4. What is experience of pain, itching etc? Is it merely some
measurement of the state of our body?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Human Body continuously measures the world around,
similar to a measurement instrument. The world we
experience is what our body creates for us to experience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary of realizations about the Body
We realized that body comes from matter and merges into the
matter after death.
We also realized that body is an instrument of life, it is a machine
that we use to live life. Secondly, body acts as a measurement
instrument and creates an experience that we call the world
around us. These are primary realizations about the Body.

Sources and References

The work described below are writings of human scientists who
have investigated the phenomena that is living inside humans.
These texts have the same theme, they are trying to describe a
phenomena that those writers have seen in action first hand.
Writer has used words of these ancient investigators to discover
the Thing that these texts are pointing to. Writer encourages
readers to go through these texts to realize that the enterprise of
investigating what is living inside is an ancient one.
Writer is deeply indebted to men and women who have come
before and have showed the light. Without their texts, it would
not be possible, in just one lifetime, to witness and investigate
something that is not readily available or visible to human
Consciousness.
Readers are encouraged to take following work with the same
spirit and, beyond the words of the writers, try to reach to the
Thing that these texts are pointing to.
Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 - 1986): One of the greatest
investigators of human consciousness, Mr. J. Krishnamurti,
worked his entire life to show human beings how to
investigate Truth and what it means to be a human being.
He presented the phenomena of human consciousness in
modern language. Writer has used several words that Mr. J.
Krishnamurti has used in his books to describe what is
taking place inside a human being. Following are some of
notable publications writer has referred
a. Awakening of Intelligence
b. Freedom from Known

Patanjali Yog Sutras - Maharishi Patanjali described yoga

as a practice of overcoming automatic tendencies of
Consciousness. He has gone on to describe these
tendencies in a very approachable way. [Patanjali Yog
Sutras were compiled around 400 BCE by Maharshi
Patanjali, taking from yoga from other older traditions.]

Ten Principal Upanishads - There are about 200

a. One note of caution: These are not religious books. They
are investigative books that explore the nature of reality.
The purpose of these books was not to preach but guide
students to investigate in a particular direction to witness
reality first hand.
e. The original texts are in Sanskrit, transliterations that are
available on Internet have used words that may not be
representative. [For example, some texts have
transliterated some words as Gods, when they actually
refer to Senses in original texts. It is useful to not get
occupied with words and try to see the thing that they are
trying to point to. It is useful to not get bogged down by
explanations and commentaries of other humans and
gather second hand knowledge that may not be valid.]
Finally, it helps to realize that all Knowledge, including writers
knowledge, is Incomplete and will always be incomplete. So use
all texts, including this book, with caution as pointers to the real
Thing. Go and see the real Thing yourself, that is what matters.

About the Book and Authors

This book is a result of more than five years of first hand
investigations, that Authors undertook to discover what is living
inside, which results in human life that we experience.
This book does not contain any second hand unverified
knowledge. Only first hand verified realizations about nature of
life have made it to the book.
Authors also conduct Who Am I workshops in their towns. Most
of the tools discussed have been used with the audience of the
workshops. The real experiences during workshops have also
contributed to the content of the book.
As with any investigator of natural phenomena, Authors have
referred to several bodies of knowledge that assist human
beings in realizing the nature of reality. Authors have given list of
such sources in the references section.
Authors
also
have
launched
a
platform
namely,
AwakenYourIntelligence.org, which is working towards the goal
of creating broader awareness of the true fact of human
existence. Proceeds from book sales contribute towards this
cause.
