LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLES
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, verse 6
O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thy justice here;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and deaths dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
PRAYER
Beloved in Christ, let it be our care and delight this morning to prepare ourselves to
hear again the message of the angels, to go to Bethlehem in our hearts and
minds and see this thing that has come to pass, and, with shepherds and wise
men, to adore the Child lying in his Mother's arms. Let us read and note in Holy
Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our
disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought to us by this Holy Child; and
let us make this holy place glad with our carols of praise.
But first let us pray for the needs of his whole world:
for peace and goodwill over all the earth;
for unity and love within the Church he came to build;
for good will and mutual care within this our city of Ashland, within our state,
and across our nation.
And let us at this time remember in Jesus name:
the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed;
the sick in body and in mind and them that mourn;
the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children;
and all who know not the loving kindness of God.
Lastly let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another
shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose
hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom we for evermore are one.
These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the
words which Christ himself hath taught us:

ANTHEM
E. Hovland
The Word was made Flesh and dwelt among us. We beheld the glory of the Father, full of grace and truth. In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God and the Word was God. In him was life, and the life was
the light of men. He came to his own, and his own received him not. (John 1:1, 4, 11, 14 ).

O God, you make us glad with the yearly remembrance of the birth of your
only son, Jesus Christ: Grant that as we joyfully receive him as our

May he who by his Incarnation gathered things earthly and heavenly into
