Summary statements of the authors main ideas
In this part of the book Kate Hudson is explaining why she is writing this book. She also takes us into to
her own personal life by sharing her own advice. The main reason why she wrote this book is to help
women and girls feel happy with their body and show them ways they can live a happy and healthy life
style. Kate Hudson also recommends making a journal to document your journey throughout the book. By
using her own stories she hopes other will connect to her problems and be able to learn from her.

Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

Kate hudson says, Instead, the goal

is feeling good in your body(Hudson
xii).

The quote relates to my question because women are

always hard on themselves because they dont look like
the magazines, but really the goal is the feel good about
yourself and not live on what other people think of you.

Guiding Question(s):How does the broader american society and media affect womens body image?
Summary statements of the authors main ideas
The main idea Shane Koyczan was pointing out was that we can be better than the labels people
give. The people who cant see the potential in themselves just need to get a better mirror and look
harder. He ended his talk with an amazing poem that he wrote himself. In the poem he hit all the main
points that he was talking about. One of things he said that stood out the most to me was that he had
trouble finding out who he was.

Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

In his talk he said, We were

expected to define our self at an
early age, and if we didnt some one
else would.

This relates to my guiding question because bullying is

one of the main causes of women to feel insecure of
their body. When we people are labeled they either are
shot down by it and can never come back up again, or
they push to the side and continue on the path they have
chosen.

Growing up we have dreams of

being something different: They
asked me what i wanted to be, and
told me what not to be
Shane Koyczan said, Accept the
identity others will give me

Guiding Question(s): How does social media and the broader society of America affect womens body image.
Summary statements of the authors main ideas
Kate Hudson was explaining ways to love yourself first. She talked about steps of knowing your body and
know what your body signals are. She also talked about how to find out what type of body you have. This
section was mostly on body image. Kate Hudson talked about 4 different body types and how each body
types need different care.there was also a section on fake food. This was important because we all have
these types of food in our homes and once we get rid of them we will be able to live a healthy life.

Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

Most people dont like how they look

and resort to dieting to fix their
bodies: I have observed that those
people have the hardest time
accepting their shapes(Hudson 38)

This relates to my question because women have a hard

time feeling comfortable with their bodies. When i read
this section of the book she really said things that were
true and that would help people with body issues.

Kate hudson makes an important

remark when she wrote, we are all
surrounded by images of beautiful
women-in films, on TV, in
magazines, and in social media
(Hudson 57).

Unfamiliar words

When Kate Hudson wrote this sentence it really stood

out to me the most because its so true. There are many
beautiful women out there, but when they appear on
social media their bodies have been retouched. Social
media gives an unreachable standard for womens body
image.

Guiding Question(s): How does social media and the broader society of America affect womens body image.
Summary statements of the authors main ideas
In these chapters she gave examples of her own life on how she was when she was growing up. She
explained that her mother didnt force a way of life on her and her siblings, but she told them to find their
own way of life first. One of the main points Kate Hudson was talking about is the five big types of
negative thinking. By stating these five big types of negativity she wanted the reader to know, that if you
label yourself using a derogatory or less thanterm, you limit yourself from growing ad from being who
you really are. The book also introduced the three body types. The three body types are Vata, Pitta,
Kapha,

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

This relates to my question because we need to all need
to have a positive outlook on our bodies because if we
dont thats bad.if you have a negative outlook on your
body then that could lead to you harming yourself. With
a positive outlook we can feel more confident in
ourselves and be less affected by other peoples
negativity

Guiding Question(s): How does social media and the broader society of America affect womens body image.
Summary statements of the authors main ideas
In these chapters it heavily focuses on nutrition. Eating healthy is a way we can help our bodies grow,
when we eat junk foods it brings our mood and energy down. Kate Hudson explains 4 rules of eating
healthy choose well, control your portions, eat often (healthy not junk food), and eat the right combinations
of food. A section in the book heavily focused on sugar in your body. The body can not function properly if
a person chooses to eat a lot of sugar. The biggest part of the section was mostly making a meal plan that
works for you and knowing the four rules of eating well. When we eat well our bodies and and mind will
change.

Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

Kate Hudsons main point is, Keep it

simple. Dont try to change too much
too fast(hudson 111).

Even though this part of the book was mainly on nutrition

this line really stood out to me. It relates to my question
because women are always wanting to change the way
they look so they can fit in with society. Sometimes
change is good, for example cutting out unhealthy food,
but this good change can turn bad when you start to cut
out a lot of food from your diet where it turn into the point
of starvation. This change is bad because you are
harming your body. We can all learn from this because
we all are changing we just need to take it slow.

Summary statements of the authors main ideas
In these pages kate hudson is talking about how to find your body type. She explains the process in how
you you pick what type of exercise body you have and what it means to have that type of body. She also
writes about her life to use as an example, she wrote about how she loves to be outside and how that can
help your health. There were also good facts about neuroscience and how your brain works better with
exercises. At the end of this section in talked about how meditation can help your body greatly. With
meditation you can lower your stress rate and feel better.

Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

At a young age girls dont really care

how they look, but as they get older
their minds change: We all have
different bodies and we all, more or
less, have different ways we want to
look(Hudson 125).

This quote relates to my question because nobody looks

the same and we all want to be happy in our bodies.

Guiding Question(s): How does social media and the broader society of America affect womens body image.

Summary statements of the authors main ideas

In this section of the book Kate Hudson talks about stress and meditation. She really stressed the
importance of meditation and how you can benefit from it greatly. The book also helped find how well you
are coping with stress. Kate Hudson gave tips and ways to help with your stress. She also talked about
the negative and positive affects of stress. I this section it was mostly a quiz where you try to find out your
mindfulness. The mindfulness questionnaire focused on the five facets of mindfulness. At the last part of
the section there was another quiz which helped you to find out if you were addicted to sugar.

Embedded quotation (page #)

Kate hudson says, Dont
underestimate the power of saying
things out loud (Hudson 149).

Unfamiliar words

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

This quote relates to my guiding question because if
women dont speak up about things they will never get
anywhere. If young girls dont tell anyone they are being
body shamed or slut shamed it may never end. Greater
consequence may be that they keep it all bottled up and
turn to self-harm.

Guiding Question(s): How does social media and the broader society of America affect womens body image.
Summary statements of the authors main ideas
In this section Kate Hudson is mainly talking about the importance of a cleanse/ detox. A cleanse or a
detox isnt like going on a diet, but it is more of cleaning your body of impurities. One of the cleanses she
highly suggests is a sugar detox. She talked about how we are all addicted to sugar and how its bad for
you. Towards the end of this section it was about how we all need to have more fun in our daily lives and
be more thankful. By doing so will help cleanse your body of stress and negative feelings. There were
also two recipes for detox foods.
Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

Kate Hudson wrote, Finding

pleasure is enjoying the process and
not being attached to the outcome.
When we are attached to the
outcome, we often set ourselves up
for disappointment (Hudson 194).

I personally like this quote because she is telling us we

should enjoy what we are doing and not prepare
ourselves for the end. This relates to my guiding
question because I think young girls are used to setting
themselves up for the worst, I can agree because i do
this. We set ourselves up for the worst so we dont need
to feel the pain of disappointment. In this process we do
get attached to things and act cold to the certain
situation this can be bad because it can lead to self harm
and maybe ridicule from our friends.

Guiding Question(s): How does social media and the broader society of America affect womens body image.
Summary statements of the authors main ideas
Kate Hudsons main idea in this section was mostly making the plan work for you. There were also ways to
help you plan out your week so you can live a better/ healthier life. At the end of the book she used
herself as an example and gave a chart of how her day goes. On the final pages there were
acknowledgments. At the end of the book she really stressed making real work. If a person have
unrealistic goals it will be hard for them to reach them. But when you have achievable goals you will be
able to accomplish them sooner and be able to have more goals. The last saying in her book was not to
go to an extreme where you dont enjoy yourself, and dont go hog wild and eat everything in sight.

We all have stress in our lives:
Stress is inevitable part of our lives,
but we can learn to manage it so that
it doesnt blindside us(Hudson 215).

Unfamiliar words

This relates to my question because when women or

girls feel stress they can hurt themselves. If we learn
how to cope with stress we can live a better life. Stress
affects all our lives and when we cant deal with it
properly we are hurting ourselves.
