Bryce Legare gives a future Scotty star a boost up

to the basket and a chance to win a big jug of soda
pop during halftime of the Glasgow girls vs. Scobey
Thursday night. A good crowd was on hand and
it was the Spartan fans making the trek that had an
enjoyable trip home as the Spartan boys, trailing 28-26
at halftime, rallied to defeat the Scotties 56-47. That

was followed by the Scotty girls, up 30-26 heading into

the 4th quarter, going down in defeat to the Spartans
35-33. Two very hard-fought ball games, we might add,
and it will be interesting to see the outcome when they
all meet up again in Scobey on February 4th. There
are seven more meetings to go before that, however,
starting with a trip to Harlem this Saturday.

Community Cash, Chamber

Big Bucks saw a nice boost
The Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce &
Agriculture had a very successful holiday season with
its Annual Community Cash program.
The Community Cash Script was available starting
on October 14, 2016 at First Community Bank in
Glasgow/Hinsdale, Valley Bank and Independence
Bank. The purpose of the Community Cash program is
to encourage people in our area to Shop Locally. The
Glasgow merchants offer a variety of quality products
along with outstanding customer service.
In 2016, 67 Chamber business members
participated in the program with 76 loans totaling
$71,800 from Valley Bank, 37 loans totaling $33,200
from FCB, and 19 loans totaling $16,850 from
Independence Bank for a total of $121,850 dollars
Spent Locally!
The Chamber Big Bucks program was also very
successful. From October 14th thru December 31st,
2016 alone over $37,836 of Chamber Big Bucks were
purchased from the Chamber office.
With both programs, $159,686 was spent
LOCALLY during the 2016 Holiday season in Glasgow.
This is up $10,000 from last year.
The Chamber thanks everybody for participating
in these programs and supporting our local merchants!

Meeting on Monday at Region 6 Headquarters

A petition, known as the Quiet Waters Initiative,

was submitted to the Montana Fish and Wildlife
Commission this past spring by Backcountry Hunters
and Anglers. The petition states that Montana has
experienced advanced motorized technology on its
waterways, which has potentially opened up waters
previously thought to be unusable by motorized water
craft.
At its regular May meeting, the Commission
initiated rule-making on the petition, stating, in part,
that the Commission should consider being proactive
instead of reactive to the changes in recreation on
Montanas waterways to avoid conflicts and protect
traditional and safe recreational uses.
Public hearings will be held to obtain public
comment in Billings, Kalispell, Missoula, Bozeman,
Great Falls and Helena. The deadline for public
comment is Sunday, February 12th.
For anyone in FWP Region 6 who is interested in
listening to the proceedings or giving public comment,
the meeting will be available via videoconference at
FWP Region 6 headquarters in Glasgow on Monday,
January 9 at 6:00 p.m.
The 26-page petition is broken down by watershed,
including the Clark Fork River watershed, the Upper
Flathead River watershed, the Upper Missouri River
(from Three Forks to Pelican Point Fishing Access Site),
the Missouri river (from Pelican Point FAS to the Upper
Missouri Breaks National Monument), and the Upper
Yellowstone River watershed. To view the petition,
you can visit http://www.fwp.mt.gov. On the home
page under Whats Trending, click on Quiet Waters
Proposed Rules.
Written data, views, or arguments may also be
submitted to: Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks,
Attn: Quiet Waters Petition, P.O. Box 200701, Helena,
Montana, 59620-0701; or e-mail QuietWaters@mt.gov.
Comments must be received no later than Feb. 12, 2017.

Beans, beans, the magical fruit...

Hey, hey, hey, its National Bean Day! Just as
throughout the Old and New World history, beans
are an important source of protein. A very healthy
choice for any meal or snack, they are also an excellent
source of fiber, are low in fat and are high in complex
carbohydrates, folate and iron.
Significant amounts of fiber and soluble fiber are
found in beans as one cup of cooked beans provide
between 9 and 13 grams of fiber. Soluble fiber can help
in lowering blood cholesterol.
There are approximately 40,000 bean varieties in
the world. Only a fraction of these varieties are massproduced for regular consumption. Here are some
interesting facts about these lovely legumes.

Denver-based business Womens Bean Project,

which gives soup, snack and jewelry-making gigs to
chronically unemployed women, started with $500 of
dry beans in 1989.
Dry pinto beans are one of the most cost-efficient forms
of protein at 7 cents per half-cup serving. Lean ground
beef is $1.18 per 4-oz. serving and chicken is 82 cents
per-4 oz. serving.

In the 6th century BC, philosopher and mathematician

Pythagoras had a deep philosophical dislike of beans.
Some historians reported his aversion was due to the
belief that legumes contained the souls of the dead.
Approximately 71,089 people in the world have the last
name Bean.
Vermont ranks highest in searching for bean recipes
online. Montana and Wyoming are second and third.
(We love our beans!)
In ancient Greece, minor public officials were elected
by drawing beans. The person who got the white bean
got the job.
The Alabama Butterbean Festival set the record for the
largest pot of baked beans at 1,010 gallons.
North Dakota has retained its position as the topranking producer of dry edible beans in the United
States since 1991.
The longest recorded time for sitting in a bath of cold
baked beans is 100 hours by Barry Captain Beany
Kirk of Port Talbot, West Glamorgan (United Kingdom).
Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) has a masters degree in
electrical engineering
Every hour, 38.5 tons of baked beans are eaten in
Britain.
The top five beans grown in the United states are pinto
beans, navy beans, black beans, red kidney beans and
great northern beans.

From the TV show, Discovery Kids:

Myth: Can eating beans cause excessive flatulence?

In the spirit of highbrow science, the MythBusters
took on the premise of the well-known childrens song
Beans, Beans, the Magical Fruit. The popular rhyme
claims that the more beans you eat, the more flatulence
you produce, so Kari Byron, Jamie Hyneman and Adam
Savage tallied their toots on an average day and compared
it with a day of each gobbling down gas-causing chow to
see whether beans win out as the ultimate fart food.
Since carbonation and red meat are also linked to
gas buildup, Kari subsisted on soda, Jamie devoured
nothing but meat, and Adam ate a hill of beans for a
day. When comparing gas diaries, Adam came out the
winner far and away. Karis fizzy beverages doubled her
average gas production, while Jamies steaks chopped
his gas in half. But those notorious beans upped Adams
flatulence by 100 percent; he recorded four times more
flatulence than Kari with a whopping 20 toots.
This myth confirmation makes scientific sense,
because beans are packed with a type of sugar called
oligosaccharides. As bacteria in the large intestine work
hard to break down these macromolecules, they release
gas in the process. Unfortunately, that gas needs to go
somewhere, and its escape route is often in the form of
flatulence.
Much to the chagrin of any non-bean-eating
dinner-mates.
Myth: Confirmed
