I was excited when Mr.

Chapman, my EMS instructor, handed out the form for the field
trip to Murrells Inlet fire station. Then on the day of the trip I couldnt have been happier. The
class started in a sort of teaching room, similar to a college lecture hall with rows of tables all
facing one direction, where one of the paramedics, a short, muscular man, went over all of the
medical equipment. Apart from BLS equipment such as gauze, bandages, etc. he also showed us
some ALS equipment such as IV devices and my personal favorite the IO which standed for
Intraosseous. The IO was similar to a drill was used to deliver medications to the patient if IV
usage failed more than twice. The interesting part about this was that the IO actually went into the
patients bone. Another part I learned about was the fire engine. For instance the engine has two
sides: an engineer side and an operator's side. I personally liked the engineers side because they
were in control of the fire engines water output and used a console in the center of the truck to
control water pressure. However, the operators side had useful tools for firemen such as a
chainsaw and oxygen equipment.
