Identity in non-traditional portraiture

What is the main focus of this lesson?
Students will study artists works to help the students get a grasp for how non-traditional portraits work.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
This will prepare students get an idea for their own portrait that they will create. This is also an introduction for the students.

Assessment
(formative and summative)

Students should understand how self-portraits are traditionally created. Students should
understand the concept of idols (so that they dont do it themselves in their paintings).
Formative: Asking what they know about self-portraits and examples if they can think of
some.
Summative: Discussing the differences between traditional self-portraits and non-traditional
portrait works. Talking about artists. And when they discuss the differences between the
artists.

In groups of four

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher activities and student
activities
Teacher: Go find an object on the table that you like or find appealing. An object that has meaning to
you. Dont move the object sit where it is located (this forces students to not sit with their friends)

Teacher: Put a powerpoint of slides with pictures of portraits. Raise your hand if you think this is a
portrait. Students have a discussion with each other why they think it is or not.
Development

Teacher says now discuss with a partner why you chose the object in front of you.

Now talk to everyone at your table. Tell everyone about why your partner chose the object.

Teacher: Is it easier now to see why some of the paintings we saw were portraits? Lets do a quick
sketch. You can change the object so that it meets your needs. Lets do a 15min drawing exercise with
pastels to depict a non-traditional portraiture.

Lets share again with the people at our tables. Lets do 2 mins with a different partner than last time.

Now get into your group of 4 and share about the other person.

Okay I see some wonderful work here! Good job everyone! What were some things that were
easier/harder between the two types of portraitures? Which do you like better?

Now as a table choose two non-portraiture artists and discuss the following. Have someone be a scribe!
What do you see when you look at the paintings? Who are the artists? Where are they from? Why did
they use the subject matter in their portraiture? How did they create their portraiture? What are
similarities/differences between the two artists portraitures?
