Answer to the LeftHand Column
Question.

How do you know?

(Source)

How does this relate

to your disease?

What is Health
Geography?

Health Geography is
the usage of
geographical
information,
perspectives, and
methods applied to
health, disease,
and health care
studies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_geograph
y

Why do people study

it?

It was influenced by
the shifting of a
medical model to a
social model

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_geograph
y

How do people study

it? What kinds of
tools and experts do
they use?

They split it into two

categories:
geographies of
disease and health
(they trace where
certain diseases
come from),
geographies of health
care (gives people
advanced medical
tools such as
Telemedicine).

Is there a lot or a little

information on your
disease related to
health geography?
Why do you think yes
or no?

There is a lot of
information on health
geography for
syphilis. I think this is
because syphilis has
been around for a
long time and people
want to know where it
transfers from.

http://www.cdc.gov/st
d/stats11/syphilis.htm

Health geography
relates to syphilis
because people
study where it comes
from in order to
understand how to
slow down the
transferring of syphilis

What are at least

Three methods are
three different cultural 1. Cluster detectionmethods of dealing
used today
with this disease in 2. Mapping used
the modern day
today
and/or throughout
3. Data used today
history? Be specific
on when the
treatment has been
used.

These methods relate

to syphilis since they
help people locate
the cause of the
problem treat it, then
prevent other cases
of syphilis.

Are there any specific

religious beliefs tied
into the cultural
methods of dealing
with this disease?
What are the religions
and how do their
beliefs impact how it
is dealt with?

http://childrenshealth
care.org/?
page_id=195

The religions against

medical care relate to
my disease because
if they were to have
syphilis there would
be no way to
medically treat the
disease.

I did not find any

religion specifically
against syphilis
treatment, but these
religions are against
any type of medical
care: Followers of
Christ, Faith
Assembly, Church of
the Firstborn,
and The Body. Their
beliefs affect them
not being able to
treat syphilis with
medicine.

What is the history of

this disease and
where/who does it
typically affect? Is
there a connection
between those two
questions?

Many people believe

syphilis was brought
over to America by
the French. Syphilis
is mostly located in
Africa, Asia, and
South America.
Syphilis mostly
affects men. There is
no connection
between those two.

http://archive.archaeo This relates to my

logy.org/9701/newsbri disease since
efs/syphilis.html
geographers can use
this information to
understand why men
and certain locations
have a higher chance
of having syphilis.

Is this disease
increasing or
decreasing in
prevalence? Why?
Any specific cultural
methods helping or
hurting the spread of
it?

Syphilis has
decreased since
2013 by15 percent.
Treatments,
prevention, and
informing people
helped the disease
decline. Modern day
treatments are
helping prevent the
spread of syphilis.

http://www.cdc.gov/nc
hhstp/newsroom/201
5/std-surveillancereport-pressrelease.html

This is related
because the increase
and decrease allows
health geographers
to understand why
syphilis is increasing
or decreasing.

Are there any maps

showing the spatial
distribution of your
disease? Write down
the link of where to
find it/them under
source.

Yes there is a map.

http://www.who.int/tdr
/publications/disease
_watch/syphilis_map/
en/

This relates to
syphilis since it allows
health geographers
to see what places
have higher cases of
syphilis and they can
use that to figure out
why they have a
higher amount.
