Higher
Education
in Pakistan
Institutions of higher education are
responsible for laying the foundations of
just, democratic societies. Unfortunately,
Pakistans limited resources have been
allocated largely to primary and
vocational education, with the result that
deep-rooted problems in the nations
higher education system have so far gone
largely unaddressed.

The challenges which include shortage

of world-class faculty, lack of creativity in
educational practices and research, and
widespread use of passive methods of
learning and teaching have hindered
the countrys progress and limited its
development potential. Compared to
countries in the region, which spend
much larger proportions of their GDP on
higher education (like India and China),
Pakistan lags considerably on indicators
of both human development and higher
education quality.

Shaping Futures is Habib Universitys

campaign to bring together like-minded
individuals to make a significant
difference in the lives of students and
faculty, allowing them to reach their full
potential as skilled and educated citizens
in local, regional and international
communities.
We invite you to become a part of our
community and leave an imprint on the
future of Pakistan and South Asian
societies.

10

Pakistan is at a critical juncture in its history. While it is necessary to

evolve out of the postcolonial heritage, there is a large untapped
opportunity to engage our youth with broader knowledge and experiences for
self-cultivation, respect for both heritage and future, and a commitment to
service and excellence.

Habib University is the first dedicated liberal arts university in Pakistan

with its academic programs, governance and faculty expertise comparable to
the best in the world. Our vision is to have a transformative impact for
higher education in the country. To fulfill this vision we have made a firm
commitment to a needs-blind admissions policy and I am proud to say
that the HU community represents a vast cross-section of our diverse
country. I invite you to join us as friends, supporters and
ambassadors in this endeavor, which envisions an
enterprising and flourishing Pakistan.

is an embodiment of the Universitys
philosophy, a place which encourages
students and faculty to take an active role
in learning from each other.
We invite you to join a group of 16
existing donors who have sponsored
various learning and recreational spaces
on the campus. You too can leave an
imprint on the experiences of Habib
students for generations to come by
becoming a pioneering partner of the
University as it continues to grow.
With a donation of $150,000 or more,

Global
Partnerships
Global partnerships have enabled us to
adopt best practices in higher education.
Partnering with two of the top universities
in the US Texas A&M and Carnegie
Mellon - has resulted in mutually enriching
and supportive relationships from the early
stages of institutional planning through
curriculum development to ongoing
academic operations and administration. In
addition, NYU (New York University) Abu
Dhabi has been a key advisor for faculty
recruitment.
We are collaborating with leading
undergraduate liberal arts colleges
including Harvey Mudd College and Pitzer
College, California on faculty exchange
and development, co-teaching, and program
development. We also host an annual lecture
series at the University of California,
Berkeley. Habib University has partnered
with Stanford Universitys Summer
International Honors Program to allow up
to 15 of our students to learn at one of the
worlds leading universities each summer.
Your support will help us to keep building
on the benefits of these partnerships,
innovating our academic programs and thus
creating transformative change through
higher education in Pakistan.

Global
Expriences
Habibs Global Learning Initiatives aim
to produce globally competent citizens,
who will thrive in todays interconnected
society and serve as ambassadors to the
world. Through exposure to a diversity of
perspectives, HU students are encouraged
to develop a nuanced understanding of
cultures and to build skillsets for
intercultural communication.
Students have the opportunity to engage
in learning programs abroad at different
points during their studies that
complement their interdisciplinary and
global experiences. In the first academic
year, several of our freshman students
have already attended programs in
Bangladesh and Singapore. In the coming
years, our most merited students will be
attending Stanford Universitys Summer
International Honors Program and other
learning experiences abroad.
You can become a partner in our global
engagement to enable young adults in
building global relations through personal
experience as well as to bring global best
practices to Pakistan. Your contributions
to
global
learning
will
shape
communication about and in Pakistan.

Academic
Centers & Events
Habib University has already established
four independent academic centers with
the aim of bridging the disconnect
between academic discussion and
practical application of knowledge. For
example, one center focuses on
scholarship in vernacular languages;
another promotes research and action on
key development challenges facing South
Asia.

Further, Habib University has hosted

numerous public events and conferences
already in its first academic year, many of
which were attended by hundreds of
participants and highly acclaimed in
various media. Our centers and events
help spark constructive dialogue, host
dignitaries from around the world, and
provide a much needed space for broader
engagement with stakeholders from
industry and public decision makers.
You can support our Academic Centers
by funding various projects, visiting
faculty and a research fund, as well as host
an international conference that will
create new knowledge and advance
capacities and entrepreneurship.

new ways to enhance the pedagogical
experience at Habib. They play a
fundamental role in capacity building of
Pakistani academia, as they bring in
global experiences that they share with
local academia and practitioners to
address contextual problems.
You can invest in Habibs intellectual
capital and help us attract academic
leaders and faculty who thrive on
teaching, research and innovation. You
can name an endowed Professorship for a
