COLUMBUS The body

language during the trophy
presentation said it all about
Westerville Souths 57-55 win
over Lima Senior in the Division I boys basketball state
championship game on Saturday night.
After Lima Senior coach
Quincey Simpson accepted the
state runner-up trophy, none of
the Spartans made a move to
touch the silver trophy.
But a few minutes later when
Westerville South accepted
the winners gold trophy, every
hand on the Wildcats roster
seemed to be reaching out to
touch their prized possession.
Lima Senior (29-1) came
so close to finishing off a
perfect season with a state
championship. But in a game
that became closely contested
for the final 16 minutes after
Westerville South broke out to
a big early lead, the Wildcats
made one more play than the
Spartans.
Jordan Humphreys floater
in the lane with 2.3 seconds
left in the game gave Westerville South (26-5) the state
championship a year after it
finished runner-up to Huber
Heights Wayne in last years
D-I championship game. The
Spartans called a timeout with
1.8 seconds left on the clock
after Humphreys shot, but
Xavier Simpsons shot from
just inside the midcourt line hit
high off the backboard as time
ran out. Humphrey led Westerville South with 19 points,
14 of them in the first half.
Simpsons 17 points led Lima
Senior. Ruben Flowers scored
12 points and Rico Stafford had
10 points.
Its tough, Quincey Simpson said. Theres some studs
over there. Theyre very well
coached. We gave it all weve
got. I thought all my guys laid
it on the line.
Humphrey described the
game-winning shot this way:
It was what Ive worked on all
year and was doing all game
just attack and get the ball
to the rim. Time was running
down. Somebody had to score.
It was a tie game and I just happened to be in position.
Lima Senior never led after
the opening minutes of the
game and was behind by as
many as five points in the
fourth quarter before tying the
game at 55-55 on a bucket by

all season. So why should the
state tournament be any different? The Thunderbirds handled Cleveland Villa Angela-St.
Joseph like most of the teams
on their schedule.
LCC blew VASJ out the side
door of the Value City Arena to
grab the state title.
LCC used a big second half
to run away with a 66-44 victory over VASJ to win the Division III boys basketball state
championship Saturday before
11,109 fans at Ohio State.
It was the third straight year
the two teams had met for the
D-III state crown, with LCC
winning 64-62 in 2014 and this
year. LCC lost to the Vikings
63-50 in last years state title
game. LCC ended its year 28-1,
while VASJ finishes 23-6.
I cant put it in words, LCC
guard Tre Cobbs said. Its a
blessing. . We werent going
to have the same faces in that
van that we had last year. We
worked for it as soon as we
got back, put in the time and it
definitely showed.
Added LCCs Dantez Walton,
Last year at the end we had
our heads down, as you saw
with the newspaper (picture)
that we hung up in our locker
room as a reminder of that pain
we had. This year you may
have heard us cheering in our
locker room, and thats a good
thing. LCCs Thomas Williams said, I walked out of that
locker last year and said well
be right back here next year. To
come out and win it is the best
feeling in the world.
Its LCCs third boys basketball state championship after
winning in 2010 under coach
Bob Seggerson and 2014 under
coach Frank Kill.
They were first class all the
way. They deserved to win,
VASJ coach Babe Kwasniak
said. They are so good. If
Tre Cobbs is not a Division I
player, then someone needs
to show me what a Division
I point guard looks like. The
kids pretty good and the (Dantez) Walton kid is great.
LCC was led by guard Cobbs
24 points. Cobbs, who was
named the D-III player of the
state tournament, hit 9 of 14

LCCs OConnor comes up big in two state games

By Jim Naveau

jnaveau@civitasmedia.com

COLUMBUS A year ago,

Ethan OConnor was voted
the Glue Guy on Lima Central Catholics boys basketball
team for doing the sorts of
things that might not show up
in the box score.
The award hasnt been
handed out this year, but the
6-foot, 3-inch senior did all
the same things and more
again, which is one of the
reasons another state championship stuck to LCC this
season.
OConnor who averaged
6.5 points and 5 rebounds
this season scored 11
points and had four rebounds,
two assists and a steal in the
Thunderbirds 66-44 win over
Cleveland Villa Angela-St.
Joseph in the Division III
boys basketball state championship game on Saturday.
Two days earlier he had 12
points and three rebounds in
a 74-56 state semifinal win
over Cincinnati Roger Bacon.
Against Villa Angela-St.
Joseph he hit a short jumper,
then connected on a 3-pointer
to help start the 30-7 LCC run
in the third and fourth quarters that turned the champi-

onship game into a blowout.

Hes a guy who does the
dirty work most people dont

appreciate. If youve been

around the program long
enough you know hes a gritty

kid, hes a hard nosed kid. He

plays super hard and comes
up with some big shots at the
most unexpected times, LCC
coach Frank Kill said.
Hes a guy who has a lot of
leadership skills when needed. He hit a big three for us
there (on Saturday). He will
just do anything you ask him
to do, he said.
OConnor, his brothers
Tyler and Aidan, and their
dad, Mike, have seven state
championships among them.
Tyler was a sophomore
starter and a key player on
LCCs 2010 state champion
team. Aidan was on the 2014
state champion team, Ethan
has been on the last two LCC
state winners and their dad
has been an assistant coach
on all three of them.
I guess you could say weve
always played pretty well in
Columbus, Ethan OConnor
said.
OConnor was usually the
first player off the bench on
LCCs 2015 state runner-up
team. This season he moved
into the starting spot Jake
Williams had as a senior last
year, where he often battled
taller players.
Last year I got voted Glue
Guy. We didnt do that this

year but Glue Guy is basically the guy who doesnt get
on the stat sheet but brings
the team together. I take
pride in bringing the team
together, he said. If theres a
break in the game, I point out
who everybody is guarding. If
there is a run, I get everybody
calm.
Like some of his teammates, OConnor says the
only loss in their 28-1 season,
54-52 to Lima Senior on Jan.
26, was a turning point that
made them intensify their
efforts to win a second state
title in three years.
That was our first loss of
the season, it was our only
loss of the season. It definitely opened our eyes that
we needed to get better, he
said. Prior to that game,
we played to our opponents.
Since that game, we played to
our potential, especially during the tournament.
That potential probably was
never displayed more than
when LCC turned a 27-26
halftime lead into a 24-point
lead at 57-33 in the first 12
minutes of the second half.
Its incredible. We played
so well in the second half. It
was a great way to end our
senior year, OConnor said.

Cobbs came out hot

LCC led 11-10 after
the first quarter and held
a 27-26 lead at the half.
Coming out of the

Spartans hold their own on the inside

By Tom Usher

COLUMBUS
Westerville Souths
Kaleb Wesson is massive.
The 6-foot-9 Westerville South pivot is huge
and hard to move.
But Lima Seniors
6-5 Rico Stafford and
6-5 Ruben Flowers gave
him everything he could
handle and more at both
ends of the floor.
Westerville South
knocked off Lima Senior
57-55 on a floater by Jordan Humphrey with two
seconds left to win the
Division I boys basketball state championship
Saturday at Ohio States
Value City Arena.
Wesson managed
only seven points, four
rebounds and shot 2
of 8 from the field. He
struggled to get touches
in the offense and ended
up with four fouls.
I want to front him
and prevent him from
getting the ball, Stafford said. I was trying
not to let him get the
ball in the paint. I didnt
want him to score.
Flowers had 12 points,

I was just trying to
give my team the lead,
Stafford said of his
fourth-quarter putbacks.
I gave it everything. It
was a matter of attacking the boards. If you
get boxed out, you
attack the boards.
Lima Senior coach
Quincey Simpson said,
Ruben and Rico are
both two good defenders. Ruben is our toughest guy, we said that
from day one. I thought
they did a tremendous
job on both Wesson
brothers (6-9 Kaleb and

Westerville went out to big leads
twice early in the game before
Lima Senior battled back.
The Wildcats ran out to a 14-5
lead in the games first 4 minutes
and run was the operative word in
an extremely fast-paced start.
Lima Senior cut that lead to four
points, but Westerville South built
an even bigger advantage when it
went up 24-12 with 6:19 left in the
first half.
Turnovers were costly, especially early, for Lima Senior.
Westerville South got 15 of its 31
first-half points after Lima Senior
turnovers.
Early they got some good transition opportunities but I think
we limited those guys in the
second half. Bascially, we were
just getting the nervousness out
of our system, Quincey Simpson
said.
But we erased the first half
and put ourselves in position to
win but we came up short, he
said.
Lima Senior shot the ball better
than Westerville South, 56 percent to 46 percent, outrebounded
the Wildcats 27-19 and blocked
seven shots. The Spartans defensive pressure might not have been
as productive as usual, though,
producing only seven Westerville
turnovers.
Westerville South coach Ed
Calo said he could probably imagine some of what Lima Senior
was feeling after coming so close
to a state championship because
of seeing how hard it hit his team
after its loss in the title game a
year ago.
Wow. Last year was so difficult. We really struggled with
it for a while. We came so close.
It was quite a difference from

My heart goes out to Lima
Senior. They had a phenomenal
team and a great season. I know
how they feel.
Its very difficult but they
have to be very proud of what
they accomplished this year.
There was very little difference,
if any difference between the two
squads. We just happened to have

thats why the Hoosiers are headed back to the
Sweet 16.
Freshman Thomas Bryant scored 15 of his 19
points in the final eight minutes, Yogi Ferrell
had 18 and fifth-seeded Indiana beat Kentucky
73-67 Saturday to earn a spot in the regional
semifinals in Philadelphia.
The Hoosiers (27-7) are back in the Sweet 16
for the first time since 2013 despite losing starting guard Robert Johnson to an apparent left
ankle injury late in the first half.
Indiana took control with a 17-4 run to go
up 10 with four minutes left. Lima native Tyler
Ulis and Alex Poythress pulled Kentucky within
69-67 on free throws, but Bryant hit two from
the line with 10 seconds to go to seal the win.
Ulis scored 27 points for Kentucky (27-9),
which suffered its earliest NCAA Tournament
exit since 2008 when it lost to a Marquette
team then led by current Indiana coach Tom
Crean.
Jamal Murray added 16 for the Wildcats, but
he was just 1 of 9 on 3s.
These kids arent machines. Theyre no computers. Stuff happens and you try to figure it
out, Kentucky coach John Calipari said. What
I dont want to do is take away from what Indiana did. Indiana played every kid on that court,
gave everything they had and they deserved to
win this game.

through the second half, hitting a big 3-pointer

The Hurricanes will play either Iowa or Villanova next weekend in Louisville in the South

(25-10) fend off a furious rally by Yale (23-7).

DENVER Georges Niang scored 28 points
and Iowa State (23-11) watched Josh Hagins
closely in the second half of a win over Little
Rock (30-5) in the second round of the NCAA
Tournament on Saturday.
For the second straight game, Hagins had just
two points at halftime. Unlike last time, when
he went off for 29 more in a double-overtime
win against Purdue, Hagins added just six after
the break.
Virginia 77, Butler 69
RALEIGH, N.C. Malcolm Brogdon scored
22 points and Virginia used some hot secondhalf shooting to beat Butler 77-69 on Saturday
night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Anthony Gill added 17 points and Marial Shayok finished with 12 for the top-seeded Cavaliers (28-7).
They shot 73 percent after halftime, hitting
14 of their first 16 shots of the second half, and
advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second time in
three years.
They will face Iowa State (23-11) on March
25 in the Midwest Regional semifinals.
Andrew Chrabascz scored a season-high 25
points for ninth-seeded Butler (22-11). Roosevelt Jones pulled the Bulldogs within 72-69 by
hitting the first of two free throws with 36.2

Quick Cornerstone tops Lincolnview

By Tom Usher

tusher@civitasmedia.com

COLUMBUS An
abundance of speed and
quickness.
Willoughby Cornerstone Christian had that
and a lot more.
Cornerstone Christian
used its athletic ability to
run past No.1-ranked Lincolnview 72-54 to win the
Division IV boys basketball state championship
Saturday at Ohio States
Value City Arena.
Cornerstone jumped
on nearly every rebound
and every loose ball and
sprinted the floor at a
track-like pace.
It marks unranked Cornerstones first basketball
state championship in the
14th year of the history of
the school. Cornerstone,
which played a very competitive schedule, ended
the year 17-12. The Lancers (27-2) were making
their first state appearance since the 1997 state
championship team.
We were 27-2 and lost
to the Division III (Lima
Central Catholic) and
Division IV state champions and to have that
on our record, thats an
accomplishment to these
guys, Lincolnview coach
Brett Hammons said. We
didnt have a winning
record from 2005 to last
year and we were 14-10
last year, and for us to go
27-2 this year, is a testament to these seniors.
Cornerstone guard
Michael Bothwell, who
scored 30, 41 and 30 in
his last three games, was
held to 14 points. But the
Patriots put four players
in double figures. Jeremy
Owens scored 14 points,
while Jack Kelsheimer
and Brandon McQueen
both scored 13 points
and had nine rebounds.
Kelsheimer and Bothwell
both hit two 3-pointers.
One of our keys was,
Be free and shoot the

better place to end it than
down here. Added Leeth,
This is a dream come

Christian shot a sizzling
56 percent from the
field and was 7 of 15 on
3-pointers. Lincolnview
shot 45 percent and was
1 of 8 on 3-pointers. Cornerstone won the boards,
30-23. Cornerstone sprinted out to early leads of 6-0
and 9-4. By the end of the
first quarter, Cornerstone
led 19-12. By that time,
Cornerstone had hit three
quarters.

They did a great job of

attacking the basket and
their defense led to easy
transition points because
we turned it over, Hammons said. I think that
set the tone for the game.
But halftime we were
down 19 and had to play
for the name on our jersey. I thought we won the
second half and I applaud
them for not giving up
and just throwing in the
towel.
Cornerstone continued
to gobble up loose balls
and sprint the floor in
the second quarter. And
in the halfcourt, Cornerstone used its quickness
to take the ball right at
the basket. The Patriots
outscored the Lancers
13-4 to start the second
quarter to pull out to a
32-16 lead. Cornerstone
led 37-18 at the half. By
the half, Cornerstone was
hitting 52 percent from
the field and was 4 of 9
on 3-pointers. They also
owned the boards, 18-13.
Cornerstone led 61-35
after three quarters. The
Lancers made a run in the
final quarter, but 17 was
as close as they would
get, 67-50, with 2:28 to
go. Cornerstone was also
able to rotate down and
give him to bottle up
6-foot-3 Adams and hold
him to six points.
Hes a load, Selle said
of Adams. We had a guy
fronting him and limiting
his touches, but most of
the credit goes to Jeremy
Owens. Added Hammons, It was a challenge
all night, one we knew
it was going to be, and
unfortunately for us, we
didnt give our best defensive effort today.
