GLC Enrichment Syllabus: American Stories & You

UPP at NC State University, Spring 2017
Class Day and Time: Wednesdays 10:30 AM -12:00 PM
Location: Classroom #1, New Mind Office
Instructor: Caroline Cornish
Email: ccornish@newmind.org

Course Overview:
Have you ever thought about what makes us different, and why? How does our environment
shape our ability to connect with certain people, and not others? What does culture have to do
with this process? In this course, we will explore these questions and explore what it is to be
Chinese, and what it is to be American. Are we as different as we think, and what are the causes
of these differences? Most importantly, what can we do with this information, and how do we
make it relevant to our lives as we study abroad? This course will be a fun and engaging
experience that forces you to question yourself and your life, so get ready for some
introspection. This class will meet once a week and for 13 weeks. You will be working with
Americans, creating your own personal story, and presenting them to larger audiences.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion, students will gain the following abilities and understandings:
1. Intercultural Competence: Gain a deeper awareness of personal and cultural values as
well as their relevance in a state of living abroad.
2. Service/Experiential Learning: Understand the importance of engaging in their
community and being an active participant within it.
3. Reflections & 21st Century Foundation: Gain knowledge of and understand importance
and relevance of personal leadership skills.
4. Language Skills: Improve speaking, listening, reading and writing English skills to
confidently engage with people in and outside the classroom.

ePortfolio:

course you will create at least three entries for your ePortfolio. These entries
will be used to build your Capstone presentation (see below for description) at the end of the

Capstone Presentation:
During the last class you will develop a personal presentation (5-10 minutes) on what you have
experienced in GLC & how the material relates to your life. You will present your Capstone at an
exhibition at the end of the semester. For this presentation, we expect you include both a
speaking and visual piece, but you are encouraged to be creative and make it unique to your
own ideas/interpretation of what you learned.
Photo Contest:
Each GLC class will hold a competition for a best photo taken this semester. You will be given
a theme or question to respond to in the format of ONE photo. During the Capstone
presentation, all students will be invited to vote for their favorite picture for each theme (there
are 4 total). There will be a winner for each class in the UPP. Try and come up with a photo that
best represents your class theme, and beat your other GLC classmates!
UPP@NCSU Credits, Spring 2017:
Swinging into Semester Two (1 credits) +
GLC: Enrichment (2 credits) +
Capstone (2 credits)
TOTAL = 5 credits
Attendance and Participation Requirement:
Participation from all members of the class is necessary.
E-mail at least 24 hours in advance if you plan to be absent.
You are allowed 3 absences for each semester. Multiple absences or tardiness (being
late) will negatively affect your performance at UPP.
