Artifact Justification

This essay addresses each of the artifacts that I used to demonstrate efficiency in Domain A.
This essay provides a justification for the reasons why I chose these documents.

Domain A of the teaching profession expectations (TPEs) is making the subject matter
comprehensible to students. I feel that I have achieved an integrating development level in this
Domain. An integrating development suggest that a candidate has provided substantial,
consistent, and convincing evidence demonstrating overall competency or competencies. It also
confirms that a candidate's practices demonstrate a preponderance of appropriate, relevant,
accurate, and clear or detailed evidence. To show evidence of this, I have chosen three artifacts:
a standard based lesson plan, an essay about effective teaching strategies for English Language
Learners, and a literary review that addresses the importance multiculturalism and multicultural
diversity in the classroom. I will begin with providing justification for the standards based
lesson plan.
The first artifact I chose was a standards-based lesson plan. This lesson plan was
designed for 10th grade world history class. I utilize the California state standards for social
studies when designing this lesson plan. I feel that this shows evidence of making the subject
matter comprehensible to students because it follows what is required and laid out by the state
for teaching in California. The lesson plan also addresses many aspects in the classroom. The
lesson plan takes an account the needs of all students in the classroom. The lesson plan addresses
any special needs or accommodations that have been made for students in both the instructional
strategies and Student Activities. I feel that if I continue to follow this model when planning
future lessons, I will maintain my ability to make the subject matter comprehensible to students.
The second artifact I chose that demonstrates my proficiency and making the subject
matter comprehensible to the students was an essay that addressed effective English language
learner teaching strategies. I chose this essay to demonstrate my proficiency in this domain
because teaching in the state of California requires Educators to be familiar and practice effective

strategies and activities for those students who have been identified as an English language
learner. What I feel is important in this essay is the identification of English language learners. I
feel once a student has been properly identified then the proper Support Services can be offered
for the student. Then it is the responsibility of the teacher in the classroom to make sure that all
of the support services are being utilized to the fullest to maximize the comprehension of the
subject matter for the students in the classroom. Another reason why I chose this essay is because
it provides great examples differentiated instruction that can be used with English language
learning students. I feel this is a great resource and demonstrates my proficiency in Domain A
which is making the subject matter comprehensible to students.
The final artifact I chose to show my efficiency in this domain was a literary review that I
wrote that deals with multiculturalism and cultural diversity in the classroom. I chose this
artifact because multiculturalism, when fully embraced, can make the subject matter
comprehensible two students that it may not normally be. Multiculturalism also plays a huge
factor in the area where I teach. I feel that all teachers, especially those that live in a culture
diverse area can benefit from embracing multiculturalism and incorporating it into their lesson
planning.
