mounted on the same drill

11

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Dust Control

Created by the stationary deck and 0.25 (6.4 mm) thick nylon reinforced rubber dust
curtains, the dust chamber assures high dust collection efficiency and natural dust
containment with ample space for deep hole drilling and resulting cutting pile.

Optional front and rear hydraulically operated dust curtain lifters are also available to
ensure cuttings are not pulled back into the hole while tramming from point to point
on the blast pattern.

Pumps

The in-line mounted engine, through rubber mounted coupler & three-pad pump drive
gearbox, drives the hydraulic system consisting of:
Two (2) variable displacement, pressure compensated, axial piston pumps in a close
loop system (One pump operates the rotation and left track propel functions, while the
second pump operates the right track propel functions).
One (1) variable displacement, pressure compensated, axial piston pump in an open
loop system, that operates pulldown/hoist and auxiliary functions.
One (1) dedicated fan circuit gear pump and one (1) dedicated dust collection system
gear pump (optional)

Coolers
Cooling packages are rated for up
to 125o F (52o C) ambient
temperature.
Cooler / Radiator package consists
of side by side engine radiator,
charge air cooler and hydraulic oil
cooler sections, plus stacked
compressor oil cooler section.
These oversized configurations
give the cooler ample capacity,
assuring unrestricted airflow and
reducing excessive operating heat,
which extends life of engine,
compressor
and
hydraulic
components.

21

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Coolers

All MD6290 drills use Mesabi coolers with replaceable cores. Cooling
packages are equipped with fan arrangements configured for respective
power train configurations.
22

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Mast

Heavy-duty ASTM A500 Grade B steel tubing on all four

chords and cross members, which creates a torsionally strong
mast structure and reduces the material fatigue
Designed with double-cut lacing in high stress areas to
prevent cracking and assure long life
Raise or lower full pipe rack and full drill string on the rotary
head, in less than 40 seconds

23

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Mast Elevating Cylinders

Each of the two (2) mast elevating cylinders have 8 (20.32 cm)
diameter bores and 4.0 (10.16 cm) diameter rods. The cylinder
stroke is 42.6 (108.2 cm) and each of them has 125,065 lbs
(56,728 kg) lifting capacity. These cylinders can raise the mast,
with fully loaded carousel, to vertical position. or lower it to a
horizontal position, in less than 40 seconds.

Mast Weldment

25

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

A-frame Arrangement

The MD6290 mast pivot shaft design

incorporates
replaceable
bronze
bushings for ease of maintenance.
Field servicing the pivot shaft involves
only four mounting bolts.
The A-Frame (mast pivot) and rear
deck are integrally welded to the main
frame, providing additional torsional
strength and overall rig stability.

26

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Rotary Head
The top drive rotary head gear box is driven by
one (1), variable displacement axial piston
motor. This 186 hp (138.7 kW) single motor
provides variable rotation speed from 0 to 220
rpm, and torque of up to 9,600 ft-lb (13,015
Nm). This capability allows the operator to
select the most suitable rotation speed for any
given application, and therefore to achieve the
optimal penetration rates for each specific
drilling condition.
27

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Pulldown System
The single feed cylinder, located inside the mast structure,
is driven by one (1) variable displacement axial piston
pump in open loop system on demand. It provides
pulldown and hoist forces of up to 50,000 lbs / 22,680 kg
and 47,100 lbs (21,364 kg) respectively, and feed and
hoist rates of up to 141 fpm (42.9 m/min) and 147 fpm
(44.8 m/min) respectively.

28

The pulldown and hoist system uses

cables, powered by a hydraulic cylinder
/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Sheaves & Cables

These 1 (2.54 cm) in diameter
cables, rated at 138,050 lbs
(62,75 tons) nominal strength,
travel across eight (8) sheaves
(4 guide assembly sheaves, 2
mast base sheaves and 2 crown
sheaves).

This design constitute a low maintenance and longer life system, as

compared with chain systems with their sprockets, chains or timing shafts
which accelerate wear and increase maintenance and operational cost. The
cable system absorbs drilling vibrations in higher degree than chain systems,
and also dissipates them more evenly.
29

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Carousel Pipe Rack

The carousel-type pipe rack is located outside of the mast structure, and all
functions are controlled from a console in operators cab, which assures
efficient and safe drill string changes and storage. This four (4) pod carousel
is rotated using a chain and hydraulic motor. The swing-in, and swing-out
functions are accomplished by two (2) cylinders. A pipe breakout plate is
located at operators eye level, while pipe retainer plate is mounted at the top
section.

Auto Pipe Positioner

The MD6290 is configured with an automatic pipe positioner, which will

hydraulically activate to guide pipe straight through the deck bushing.
This feature, primary used while angle hole drilling, is utilized to align
the pipe string while adding or detaching drill pipes. It reduces cycle
times and increases productivity.

32

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Hydraulic Break Out Wrench

The Hydraulically Operated Break Out wrench is mounted on the carousel pivot
shaft, outside of the mast structure and underneath the carousel. This hands-free
wrench is a three-cylinder system (swing-rotate-clamp) operated from inside the
cab utilizing two fingertip toggle switches.
This highly efficient breakout system increases speed of pipe changing operations,
and consequently increases productivity. Breaking stubborn connections without
high impact loading, creates torsional shock loads on the drill string, carousel,
rotary head or the mast structure, this wrench is the best tool for defeating
stubbornly tight joints. The operator just locks the pipe using the deck-wrench,
then applies the HOBO to force free tool joints.
33

/ Caterpillar Confidential: GREEN / WHEREVER THERES MINING

Overhead Winch

An auxiliary (over head) winch rated for up to 8,000 lbs. (3 623kg) capacity,
is offered to assist in handling of drill pipes, bits, subs and other heavy
accessories & equipment. Activation is from a toggle switch in the operators
cab,
or optional pendant winch control which hangs from outside the cab.
