SOUTH OTAGO

South Otago

Situated on the South East coast of New Zealands South Island.

An easy 40 minute drive south from Dunedin International Airport will see you in the heart
of South Otago in Balclutha.
Balclutha is the central hub and largest township in South Otago.
The Clutha River/Mata-Au bridge, with its concrete arches, spans the second longest, but
largest by water volume, river in New Zealand.

Telford A Division of Lincoln University

Telford - a Division of Lincoln University is located six kms from Balclutha, on a 880ha
commercial farm.
This is where the NAAE Conference 2014 will be held.
Telford has a long and proud history of training New Zealand farmers. The campus extends
over 800 hectares of farmland with halls of residence and facilities, technical workshops
(machinery, carpentry and welding), classrooms and livestock units. Students gain real-life,
practical training under the supervision of experienced tutors, farm managers, equine
tutors, forestry trainers and/or local apiarists.

Balclutha
Balcluthas impressive arched bridge crosses the mighty Clutha River and the commercial
centre of South Otago. It is an ideal base for exploring South Otago and stocking up on
supplies for you travels.

Tuapeka
From Beaumont, wher ethe roada ns the river meet, enjoy exploring the Clutha River
Corridor Walkway/Bikeway or head on down to Tuapeka to cross the river by historic punt.

Lawrence
This early goldmining town abounds with history and is ideal base to explore the heritage
of the area and sample the growing caf scene.

Attractions

Clinton
Clintons Three Clydesdales represent the countrys agricultural background. The lowland
area is farmed with sheep, deer & dairying and offers some of the best fly fishing in New
Zealand.

Waihola
Lake Waihola is a peaceful stretch of water famous for its reflections. Popular for boating,
windsurfing & fishing, it offers a rowing course of international standard.

Taieri Mouth
Nestled in the folds of the coastline is the seaside fishing village of Taieri Mouth. A perfect
place to experience the beauty of the southern coastline.

Attractions

Inch Clutha
Inch Clutha is a large flat island, in a delta of the Clutha River. The Inch hosts many historic
homesteads, some of which are B&Bs, and given the flat terrain is a great place to explore
by bicycle.

Milton
Milton is the perfect place to stop off on your journey to experience the Sinclair Wetlands,
home to some of New Zealands rarest birds a birdwatchers wonderland.

Kaitangata
Kaitangata, nestled I the banks of the Clutha River, it is ideally suited to take advantage of
boating, white baiting and fishing opportunities.

Attractions

Sod Cottage
The Sod Cottage is 13km north of Balclutha on SH1. It was built in the 1860s s a stopping
place for miners heading to the goldfields.

Milburn Limeworks
Rare fossils can be seen at the the Milburn Limeworks

Sinclair Wetlands
These significant wetlands are 315 hectare waterfowl reserve with numerous shallow
peaty lagoons, a labyrinth of waterways, and two islands fringed with flax, native bulrush
and grasses.

Walking & Bike Tracks

Lake Tuakitoto
A 10-minute drive from Kaitangata. You will see a selection of birds on this easy going loop
track of 15 kms. About 3 hours return, can also bike this track.

Blair Athol Walkway


Access at the back of Naish Park in Balclutha. Easy going walk along the Clutha River. 1.5
hours return, can alos bike this track

Awakiki Bush Scenic Reserve


Can be reached by turning onto the Southern Scenic Route at Balclutha. Easy going 30miunte loop track were you can see 300 year old Totaras and view an old homestead.

Sesquicentennial Track
Located at Inch Clutha this easy 90 minute return track takes you down to the wonderful
turquoise blue of the Pacific Ocean. You are able to bike this track.

Bull Creek Bush Walk


Just out of Milton this easy to moderate 40 minute return walk will take you along Bull
Creek where you are able to swim and picnic.

Chrystalls Beach to Bull Creek


Just out of Milton this easy to moderate wlak will take you on return of two hours. Take in
the amazing coastal scenery and keep a lookout for New Zealand fur seal, New Zealand sea
lion and elephant seals.

Walks & Natural Attractions

McNally Track
Starts 2kms out of Milton, this hard hoing 7km return walk will take about 3 hours. It will
take you on a climb up to a hilltop lookout 317m above sea level giving you a magnificent
view.

Mount Stuart Reserve


Just south of Milton this is an easy going 40 minute return track into native bush.

Mt Stuart Tunnel Track


South of Milton this 40 minute return walk will take you to Mount Stuart Tunnel and you
will see glow worms. A fun adventure for all the family.

Taieri Millennium Track


Just 4km north of Waihola, this moderate 4-5 hour return walk follows the Taieri River
through native bush to a picturesque area known as John Bull Gully.

John Bull Gully


Moderate walk will take you on a return walk of about 3 hours. You will venture through
native bush and see beautiful views and scenery. You are able to bike this track.

Sinclair Wetlands
Situated between lakes Waihola and Waipori, this easy walk of 2 hours will take you
through the Wetlands and give you an opportunity to hear and see native birds and fish
species.

Government Track
Moderate going walk will take approximately 4 to 5 hours to complete. This walk is also
one the most highly regarded mountain bike tracks in New Zealand.

Gabriels Gully/Weatherstons Track


An easy to moderate hour 20 minute loop walk. A number of interpretation panels explain
the history of the site and how gold was extracted. There are swimming holes around this
track.

Munroes Gully Track


Moderate going walk will take you on a return walk of 2 hours. Follow the track through
broom, native bush and you will cross the stream in several places. The tack will take you
to an old water race then through pines to a road.

Interpretative Track
Easy to medium walk will take about 80 minutes to complete. It circumnavigates this
historical area and it will take you past a number of interpretation panels. Which explain
the history of the site and how the gold was extracted.

Otago Dam Track


A moderate 3 hour return walk following a stream through silver beech forest.

Beaumont Millennium Track


An easy to moderate walk will take you on a 3 hour return walk leading to the swing
bridge, the lonely graves and the old railway line. You can bike this track.
