Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to provide an introduction to digital communications at the
graduate level, with an emphasis on the essential concepts that underlie digital
communication systems, as well as their design principles and performance characteristics in
AWGN channel.

Elements of a digital communication system, Mathematical models for Communication
channels. Cahpter1 of the text book.
Chapter 2: Source Coding
Information sources, Measure of information and entropy, Coding of discrete sources and
coding of analog sources. Cahpter3 of the text book.
Chapter 3: Characterization of Communication Signals and Systems
Representation of Band-Pass signals and systems, Signal space representation, representation
of Digitally Modulated signals and Spectral characterization Digitally Modulated signals.

Chapter 4: Optimum Receiver for AWGN Channel
Optimum receiver for signal corrupted by AWGN, Performance of the optimum receiver for
Memory-less Modulation, Optimum receiver for CPM signals. Cahpter5 of the text book

Computer Usage

Students use MATLAB in analyzing and simulating digital modulation and BER
prediction.
