Summary
Shop test of the fourth out of six 10RTflex 96C-B engines for customer Peter Doehle at
Doosan on 17th Nov 2009. The container vessels will be built at CSBC in China. This engine is
tuned as a Low Load tuning application with a power output of 57200 kW at 102rpm. Tuning
was followed by special tuning guide line from Mr. Thomas Hni Engine Tuning RT-flex96C-BLow Load Tuning same as PTDL0895.
 Assembly / Supervision by our Mr. Yoon Chan Hyo. Please refer to his report for details.

 Initial start and running in were done at 14th Nov 2009. Official shop test was 17th Nov 2009.
No shortcomings.
 WECS function test (FAT) was done by Doosan (107.346.451b).
 081version software is applied to this engine with special Low Load tuning.
IMO No. of SW : LN-BE9801, IMO CRC : 0x9168
 It was noted that Exhaust waste gate by-pass valve was installed differently with WCH
drawing (slightly moved position to DE side receiver, confirmed by WCH) and cable
connection, piping arrangement and function was confirmed before running-in with
simulation.
 Adjusted Cylinder lubrication distribution (share below/into) was applied to this engine.
(Mod. Notice7-68.746)
 Modified pressure relief valve to 1250bar installed on the IFA.
 Modified Pressure Control Valve to 950bar was applied to supply unit (Mod. Notice 757.032).
 Control oil pumps from Jaeil, domestic maker.
 The measured data were as follows: Pmax = 140.4 bar at 100% load (ISO-correct.), pscav =
3.15 barG (ISO-correct.), LWT average ~134.5C at 10 0%.
 Cylinder oil feedrate was set to 1.4g/kWh for all cylinders during running in and shop test
and the result was in normal.
 Additional measurements (10%,15%, 20%, 35% load) was done during shop test by
owners request.
 Even though charge air overpressure alarm at 110% engine load was released, set point
was kept to 110% pressure of CMCR finally (WCH confirmed).
 138mm diameter of orifice for Exhaust Waste Gate was applied. Manual open/close
function for Exhaust Waste Gate was confirmed at running-in with 081 version software.
 The phenomenon of sudden and automatically changing of cylinder lube oil feedrate (when
cycling power on BMS side) was still same with before with 080version software. BMS
parameter problem. No solution yet.
 Sometimes at astern start, it was found that both CA/TDC low shift alarm was released.
 Just SCS monitoring function on COMMIS card of flexview was set to enabled.
 Overhaul inspection not attended by writer. For detailed information regarding overhaul
inspection please refer to Assembly report.

Engine description and assembly

Cylinder liners (107.381.911a) made by Cape (Plateau honed and zig-zag oil groove) with
Pulse Lubrication System
T/C specification is 3 X ABB TPL80 B14 (specification_CA15, TA15).
Piston rings from Gtze (top VP6 SCP1 CC20 and LP8 SCP2 CC20).
Rail unit made by Won-il.
Supply unit: Non- hardened cam shaft, and sleeve type CAM applied. V3.5+ type fuel pump
installed.

Commissioning of RT-flex and WECS9520

The commissioning was carried out according to the latest Checklist Commissioning of
Wrtsil RT-flex Engines DWG 4-107.356.794b.

 Most of commissioning activity was done by Doosan according to commissioning check-list

(107.356.794b).

2.1

Pulse Lubrication system

 Installation of Pulse Lubrication Pump units and cable wiring of E41 box were done by

Doosan.
 Flushing of Pulse Lubricating System was done separately according to DWG.

107.371.720a after flushing of rail unit and flushing time was around 5 hours.
 Before initial starting, the parameter for sharing and angle of lubrication was set acc. to
latest recommendation (Mod. notice 7-68.746) to the RPLS system. (311 / 313 / 316 _
38% / 42% / 20%)

2.2

Exhaust Waste Gate

 Function of Exhaust Waste Gate by-pass valve was checked before initial start with
simulation in the flexView.
 Feedback in the flexView and indication from the solenoid valve activity and indicator of bypass valve was in good function.
 Manual open/close function was checked just before reducing engine load for second
inspection. Normal operation.

A normal running in procedure acc. guidelines was carried out, including inspections after 25/
75 and 100% load. To be mentioned:
 Inspection after 25%: Crankcase normal condition, supply units normal condition, piston

rings and liners in normal condition.


 Inspection after 75%: Supply units normal condition, piston rings and liners in normal

condition.
 Inspection after 100%: Piston rings and liners ok.
 Feed rate on flex view was set 1.4 g/kWh: resulting in ~1.40 g/kWh with measured injection

pulse count at 100%.

3.2

Low Load tuning

For Low Load tuning, below items were specialized:


/ Smaller atomizer: atomizer execution is changed from 230 to 227.
/ Exhaust Waste Gate by-pass valve and limit switch: control cable to EWG by-pass valve is
connected to #5 FCM and Limit switch which is connected to #1 FCM is used as a feedback
from EWG by-pass valve.
/ Orifice on the Exhaust Waste Gate by-pass: 138mm diameter orifice applied.
/ Different blower switch ON/OFF point: set point set to 0.3/0.5bar for ON/OFF.

The Engine Tuning was done according to the special tuning guide line Engine Tuning RTflex96C-B-Low Load Tuning arranged from our Mr. Thomas Hni.

The official Shoptest was carried out without problems and accepted by class and owner. FAT
carried out without any problem. FAT (Instruction for WECS-9520 function checks during
Engine Shop Test DWG 4-107.346.451b) was approved by owner and class.
 Measured firing pressure 142.1 / 140.4 bar (ISO-correct.) at 90 / 100% load.
 Feed rate on flex view was set 1.4 g/kWh: resulting in ~1.40 g/kWh with measured injection

pulse count at 100%.

Miscellaneous

 Auto-changing of cylinder oil feedrate was observed again same with previous PTDL series.

However, from the WCHs information, well be able to expect the improvement with
improved Lyngso software. It needs to be checked during sea trial.
QUOTE
1st. CLU4 feedrate is changing automatically from 1.4 to 1.0 [g/kWh]
This problem was recognised already at an earlier stage (during Shoptest Doosan certainly remembers)
and WCH contacted SAM/Lyngsoe with this inquiry. The reply from Lyngsoe is as follows: The
SAM/Lyngs DMS2100i system does in fact store WECS user parameters internally in non-volatile
memory (flash memory). The PLC module of the DMS2100 does a complete write-down of its parameters
every 11 minutes. After that, a reset of the DMS will have the effect that the PLS feed rates (and other
variables) will be restored to the values that were written to memory.
-> That means if parameters in the flexView/WECS were changed and there was a blackout of the BMS
system in the next 11minutes (which is a very unlikely case in vessel normal operation), the newly
entered parameters would be reset to the formerly (stored) parameters. This topic is further being
followed up between WCH and Lyngsoe currently.

UNQUOTE

 Additional measurement for owners concerns was done at 10%,15%, 20%, 35% engine
load. Please refer to the performance sheet for details.
 For Both CA/TDC low shift alarm, it is necessary to be checked proper gap and
installation of TDC sensor at sea trial again.
