Introduction:
InordertohelpstudentsgainagreaterunderstandingofthejourneytheWorldhastakeninthe
NineteenthandTwentiethcenturiesthroughthemodernday,thiscourseaimstointroducestudentstohistory
andtheoriesthroughreadings,research,writing,discussions,debates,projects,andotherinteractive
methods.ThecoursewilltakeathematicapproachthatwillchronologicallyexamineColonialism,
Decolonization,Imperialism,andGlobalism.Ultimatelystudentswillunderstandthemajortrendsof
ModernWorldHistoryandthewaythosetrendscontributetotheworldweallliveintoday.Studentswill
beabletodeveloptheirowntheoriesabouthistoricalandcontemporarytrendsinworldhistoryinorderto
analyzeandevaluatethosetrendsastheyapplytorelevanthistoricalandcontemporaryargumentsrelatingto
WorldHistory.
TheCareerandCollegeReadinessStandardsworktogethertobuildafoundationforcareerand
collegereadiness.HighQuality,increasinglychallenginginformationaltexts,andconstantimmersionin
informationaltextsareofparamountimportanceinthedevelopmentofcriticalreadingandwritingskillsthat
aremandatoryinthe21stcenturyworkplaceandhighereducation.

GlobalIssues
ThiscourseencompassesthestructuredstudyofModernWorldHistoryandContemporaryGlobal
Issuesinaseminarlikestylethatfocusesoncriticalreading,argumentativeandexplanatory
writing.

HistoricandSocialScienceliteracyentailsconstructingandpresentingargumentsbasedoncareful
analysesofprimaryandsecondarysources.
ThroughtheclosereadingofdiverseprimaryandsecondarysourcesrelevanttoModernWorld
HistoryandContemporaryGlobalIssuesstudentswillcompare,contrast,analyze,andevaluate
multipleviewpointsrelevanttocoursesubjectmatter.
Studentswillevaluatetheprimaryandsecondarysourcestheygather,identifyingbiasandcomparing
thewaytwoormoreauthorstreatthesametopic.
Throughanalysisandevaluationofprimaryandsecondarysourcesbothinstructorandstudent
chosen,studentswilldeepentheirreadingskillsandabilities.
Throughguidedandopenwritingexercisesstudentswillimprovetheirwritingabilitytosupport
claimsandcounterclaims,substantiatingthesewithevidencefromavarietyofprintanddigital
sources.
AllwritingprojectsutilizetheInternettoresearchavarietyofquestionswithinatopic,producing
analysesonthistopicinGoogleDocsandotheronlinePlatforms.

Goals:
1. Toprovideweeklypracticewithreadingcomplextextsandtheiracademiclanguageandstructure.
2. Toprovidestudentswiththeopportunitytodevelopselfsufficientnotetakingandstudystrategies.
3. Toimmersestudentsinalargerangeofshorterandlongerwritingexercisesbasedonprovidedprimary
andsecondarysourcesalongwithwritingbasedonselfgeneratedresearch.
