Fitzgerald crowns inspiration

Rivera homecoming king
By EARL WATT

When Timothy Fitzgerald was

announced as homecoming king, he
knew what he was going to do with the
crown.
Fitzgerald shook his head and took
the crown over to his special needs
classmate Dnaiel Rivera and placed the
crown on his head.

The crowd erupted, and Rivera was

announced as Homecoming King.
Ive had Daniel in some of my
classes, Fitzgerald said. Hes made a
big impact on my life. He doesnt give
up when I know it could be really hard
for him, and I felt like he deserved that
crown a lot more than I did.
Rivera, who is also on the Redskin
wrestling team, flashed a smile and said
he considered Timothy a friend. It was

TOPEKA Every January during the past five

years, in honor of Kansas Mentoring Month,
Volunteer Kansas has awarded background check
funding to Kansas Mentors for distribution to qualifying mentoring organizations. This grant funding
allows mentoring organizations in our state, that
meet minimum qualifications, the ability to conduct
Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) background
checks on potential mentors. Since the inception of
this grant, mentoring programs have been able to
safely match 9,554 youth with adult mentors.
Kansas mentoring programs are reporting significant declines in funding while an increase in the
need for services, said Cheri Faunce, director of
Kansas Mentors. These funds are a strategic
investment to ensure more young Kansans have
access to a safe and caring adult role model.
Background checks are an essential component of
the screening process to help guarantee the safety of
youth involved in mentoring programs. The cost of
criminal background checks, however, is substantial,

TOPEKA (AP) A Kansas man who spent

admitted to testified for a measure that would
require law enforcement to record some interrogations.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and other law
enforcement groups oppose the measure, which
mandates recorded interrogations of suspects
arrested for capital murder, first-degree murder and
second-degree murder.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports a House

murder of Camille Arfmann in Oskaloosa. His
brother, Tom, originally admitted to the crime but
later recanted his confessions, which were not
recorded.
Floyd Bledsoe told the committee he might not

Looking around Liberal and
Seward County, its hard to find
something the families of Bill and
E.J. Salley have not touched.
While E.J.s family had lived in
the area even earlier than that, the
heritage of the families began in the
early 1900s.
The family of William Edward
Salley from Missouri moved to
Kingman County in 1908, and a
short time later, the oldest son, Ira
R. Salley, came to Liberal and

worked for the Light Grain and

Milling Company in 1914.
Ira would go on to graduate from
Salt City Business College as a
bookkeeper, and in 1916, he
became general manager of the
milling company. Upon his
retirement in 1956, he became
president.
Ira likewise had maintained
ranch and cattle interests in both
Kansas and neighboring Colorado.
In 1965, though, tragedy struck
when he became incapacitated
