STUDY HABITS AND ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE AMONG
ADOLECENTS: A SCHOOL
INDUCTION BASED STUDY
ABSTRACT

Study skills are discrete techniques that can be learned, usually in short
time and applied to all or most fields of study. They must therefore be
distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study
and from abilities inherent in the students, such as aspects of intelligence or
learning styles. study skills develops over time and with maturity as
students discover how they learn .study skills are often presented to
students from a very young age and are applied as they graduate to higher
classrooms levels and more challenging course work

INTRODUCTION
Study skill or study strategies are
approaches applied to learning. They are generally critical
to success in schools, considered essential for acquiring
good grades and useful for learning through ones life.
Most students fail in examinations simply because of the
lack of study skills or examination taking techniques.
Study skills are an array of skills
which tackle the process of organizing and taking new
information,
retaining
information,
dealing
with
assessment. They include mnemonics which aid in the
retention, effective reading concentration technique and
effective note taking.

While often left up to the student

and their support network .study skills are increasingly
taught in high schools, and at the university level.
Studying is a compound word made up of the two words
students and dying. More broadly any skills which boost
a person ability to study and pass exam can be termed as
study skills and this could includes time management and
motivation.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Study skills are approaches and
strategies we use in learning. These are the most
important skills to get good grades .study skill not only
helps us succeed academically it will also help us to well
in life. Without effective study skill we will became over
whelmed and discouraged .The good news is that these
skills can usually be learned in a short time and applied
to every subject. If study skills are improved it reduces
text anxiety, increased confidence, competence and self
esteem.

OBJECTIVES
The present study study habits and academic
performance among adolescents: a school induction
based study was undertaken with the following
objectives.
To know the study habits of adolescent boys and
girls.

To study their academic performance.

To find out the level of study habits of adolescents.
To find out the relationship between study habits and
academic performance of students.
To gain a better understanding of students as a
learner.
To develop a better study strategies.

DISCRIPTION OF MATERIAL
This questionnaire has 52
items on the aspects of study skills. It measures
ones organization of time, good setting, ability
to concentrate, learning methods and obstacles
of effective study. It has been formulated in
English. Reliability and validity have been
established. The response of each statement is
either yes or no. This questionnaire can be
administered in individual setting or group
setting.

DISCUSSION
Study skill inventory is a
psychological test to detecting the learning
behavior and responses of the pupils. The
teacher and pupil actively participated in this
test.
This study was conducted in standard X11
including 5 student. Questionnaire carrying 52
questions which categorized in to four
schedules, in classroom, study method and
regarding examination. The test report of each
student is given below.
The first student was Neha . She is showing
good study habit. Her total score is 34. In her
study method she won 20 out of 32.Her study
method is good. In classroom she had obtained
only 1 mark out of 4. From that it is clear that
she had improve her classroom is take down the

important points in the class. In homework

section, she gets two points. She had lost her
point where she doesn`t set as time to complete
her homework. In examination schedule she got
11 points. She had learned a particular chapter
only after a test has been announced in it. Also
she doesn`t take rest before the exam and she
always study continuously. It will badly affect
the health. For better memory she had to rewind
and recollect the main points.
Considering the test of Elisha
Jacob, she is showing very poor study habit. She
got only 24 points of 52. Out of the four
schedules Elisha shows a little betterment only
in study method. She obtained is point out of
32. Her classroom portion, homework and
examination schedule was in very low level. She
had acquired 0, 1 and 4 scores respectively. She
had to take a hard effort to attain a better
position.
The third student Angel has shown very
good study habits. She had obtained 42 points
out of 52. She had 29 point for her study
method. In classroom section she got 3 scores,
1 deflect of Angel is keep talking during the
class hours. She had done her homework as her
own. By analyzing her study it is clear that, if

she takes a little effort she can achieve the high

score.
While analyzing the test report of Aneena it is
clear that she cant attained the cut off scores.
Thus she is showing a poor study habit. In the
four schedule of the questionnaire, she doesnt
get any point in the classroom section. And in
home work section she cans any points. Thus
she has to concentrate more in this section.
Regarding examination sector she won 7 points
out of 13. Now her position is lower than the cut
off marks. Thus she needs to work hard for
better performance.
The fifth and last student was
Chippy. She was also showing poor study habit.
She had only 22 points for her study skills. In
the study method she obtained only 13 points.
She can attain 50% of score in this section. In
classroom section she got only 1 point and the
same in homework section. It is not a good
manner of student. She has also need deep
concentration to modify her study.

CONCLUSION
Study skills are approaches applied
to learning. Study habits inventories have
successfully identified a provided for academic
achievement not accounted by ability.

These study skills will helps to

identify study habits of students. Through the
test it is understood that the students have to
follow many things for better studies. In this test
only one student has shown a satisfactory level
of study habit. Others are very poor in their
studies they have to give better care and
attention.
