Technology has become an essential part of our everyday lives.

It is now part of
education from kindergarten through college. With my brain and my smartphone on, I
am more powerful. (The Future of Education: BYOD in the Classroom) As students are
more experienced in technology and want to learn more using technology, the teachers
have to adapt and learn the new technology that their students can benefit from.
Technology can empower educators to become co-learners with their students by
building new experiences for deeper exploration of content. (Teaching - Office of
Educational Technology)
Throughout history, technology has been beneficial to education. In the article 11
Innovations That Changed History by Evan Andrews on History.com, it says Some of
these breakthroughs brought about immediate change, while others humbly laid the
groundwork for important developments down the road. (Andrews, 2012) One of the
inventions that drastically changed history was Johannes Gutenbergs printing press.
Prior to the rise of the Internet, no innovation did more for the spread and
democratization of knowledge than Johannes Gutenbergs printing press. (Andrews,
2012) This invention helped to spark the Age of Enlightenment which lead to people
wanting to acquire more knowledge. This invention also lead to technologies that were
and still are used in classrooms today, like the use of books for teaching in public
schools in 1800. (The history of technology in education, 2011) The video Technology
in Education: A Future Classroom by David Nemroff shows what the future classroom
may look like. He shows virtual laptops, interactive lessons, and holograms that will
allow students to take notes and keep focused on the teachers lessons. Education and
technology have advanced together in the past, present, and will continue to advance
together in the future.
As the use of personal technology increases, different classrooms and concerns
are coming up. Bring your own device classrooms are becoming more popular around
the nation. Despite the benefits of the students using their own technology and assistive
devices, there are issues with having classrooms like this. There are concerns about
technology being too heavily relied on. In this decade, it is no less important to teach
children how to use their technology brains as it is to teach them to use their physical
brains - to ignore such an obvious and powerful augmentation would be irresponsible.
(The Future of Education: BYOD in the Classroom) Another concern with the increase
of technology used by students is bullying. Cyberspace has become a new forum for
bullying by people who might be too afraid or weak to commit bullying in traditional ways
that would make them more easily identifiable. (Farrukh, Sadwick, & Villasenor, 2014)
As teachers, it is important to establish the appropriate use of technology. Associating
technology with learning in the minds of our children is an important psychological link
to establish. These are not JUST tools for playing games. (The Future of Education:
BYOD in the Classroom) Education is changing with the advancement of technology.

Educators can use technology to design relevant learning experiences that will
engage their students. Educators have nearly limitless opportunities to select and apply
technology in ways that connect with the interest of their students and achieve their
learning goals. (Teaching - Office of Educational Technology) Teachers must follow the
ISTE standards for teachers and students. On the website with the ISTE standards, it
says Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning,
and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and
demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. (ISTE Standards for
Teachers, 2008). The Office of Educational Technology: Teaching with technology article
talks about how educators can be guides, facilitators, and motivators of learners. By
understanding how to help students access online information, engage in simulations of
real-world events, and use technology to document their world, educators can help their
students examine problems and think deeply about their learning. (Teaching - Office of
Educational Technology) There are a number of educational technology associations.
One of these associations is the IEEE Technical Committee on Learning Technology
(IEEE TCLT). The IEEE Technical committee on Learning Technology (TCLT) was
founded on the premise that emerging technology has the potential to dramatically
improve learning. (A List of Educational Technology Associations, 2016) Technology
gives teachers the opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom and be more
collaborative.
All students deserve equal access to (1) the Internet, high-quality content, and
devices when they need them and (2) educators skilled at teaching in a technologyenabled learning environment. (Teaching - Office of Educational Technology) Educators
should strive to be co learners with their students and peers. Teachers should strive to
have and use the best for their students ..., teachers should be the students they hope
to inspire in their classrooms. (Teaching - Office of Educational Technology)
