Objectives of the Experiment

1. Copy the objectives provided in the manual here.

2. Be mindful of the keywords in the objective. Let the keywords guide the readings and conceptual
discussions you will have to do in the group. You should be able to trace and connect each objective to
a theory, model, concept, or principle.
3. Note if the objective is about relating variables (dependent and independent), determining a process
parameter (rate or equilibrium), designing equipment or process, or rating the performance of
equipment. The type of objective will dictate the methodological framework you need to adopt.
Methodological Framework
[You may present your framework using a diagram, table, bulleted texts, or any format that to your
judgment will easily convey the idea.]
Objective 1: e.g. if objective is about relating y (dependent variable) and x (dependent variable)
The entry may be presented using the sequence below:
Set constant (Specify the parameters and their values. These parameters affect the value of y
but are kept constant in the experiment.)
Vary x = 100 g/L, 2.0 g/L, 5.0 g/L, etc (indicate here the actual values you plan to set for the
dependent variable.)
Determine y using (specify method or approach for getting the value of y experimentally).
Note that for this kind of objective you are expected to make a hypothesis regarding the relationship
and explain your hypothesis using established theory or principle.
Objective 2: e.g. if objective is to design an equipment or process or to determine a process parameter
such as heat transfer coefficient
1

The entry may be presented using the sequence below:

Estimate (specify the equipment size or process parameter to be determined such as area,
diameter, volume, temperature, pressure)
Obtain data on (specify the raw data you have to gather in the experiment that will lead you to
make the design estimate)
Convert (specify raw data) to (specify the quantity you will compute that will be used in the
design equation; details of this conversion process shall be found in the IFD).
For this kind of objective it is expected that you know the design procedure, the working equations, and
the theoretical basis for such procedure. You should also know how the working equation is derived.
Objective 3: e.g. if objective is to rate the performance of an operation or process
The entry may be presented using the sequence below:
Evaluate (specify the performance parameter, e.g. steam economy, coefficient of performance,
etc.)
Obtain data on (specify the raw data you have to gather in the experiment that will lead you to
evaluate the process)
Convert (specify raw data) to (specify the quantity you will compute that will be used directly in
the design equation; details of this conversion process shall be found in the IFD)
Objective 4: e.g. if objective is to document qualitative/quantitative observation about a process
The entry here may be presented using the sequence below:
Observe (specify the specific thing to be observed, e.g., zones in a multiphase system)
(specify the external sense used, e.g. visual, hearing, etc.) and record (specify what to record)
Present observations as (specify the mode of presentation, e.g. as figure, graph, table, series of
pictures, or a combination of these)

Information Flow Diagram

The diagram should show full detail of how raw experimental data are processed to the desired quantity.
Raw data and calculated data should be treated as inputs and outputs of a process (calculation),
respectively. The working equations should be boxed in (to signify a process).
