COURSE
DESCRIPTION

This course studies about modeling and analyzing single and multiple degrees of
freedom systems. Response to forcing functions. Vibrations of machine
elements. Design vibration isolation systems. Balance rotating machinery.
Random excitation and response of mechanical structures.
Prerequisite: EGME 205, EGME 308, EGCE 302.

TEXT

th

Daniel J. Inman, Engineering Vibrations, Pearson / Prentice Hall Press, the 4

edition, ISBN13:978-0-13-287169 (ISBN-10: 0-13-287169-6).

COURSE
OUTCOMES

(1) Students will be able to calculate differential equations, modeling of single

and multiple degree of freedom dynamic systems, transient response, harmonic
response, Laplace transforms, linear algebra, and kinematics using modern
engineering tools [ABET-(a), (e), (k)]
(2) Students will be able to identify/ design/ build/ evaluate vibration problems/
system by applying mechanical design principles [ABET- (a), (c), (d), (e), (k)]
(3) Students will be able to function on multidisciplinary teams for designing a
mechanical component / system using effective communication [ABET- (d),
(g), (k)]

COURSE GRADE

(A+) >100, (A) 90-100, (B) 80-89, (C)70-79, (D) 60-69, (E)<59
10 homework/ 8 quizzes (10%), final project (20%), 2 midterms (40%) and final
exam (30%)
Final exam score can replace the lowest midterm if final exam is higher.
Otherwise, if final exam score is lower than the previous two midterms,
grading is as above.
8 quizzes, but only 6 counts toward grade; lowest 2 are dropped.

EXTRA CREDIT

Extra credit of up to 5 points will be added to your final total for filling out
end-of-class daily reflections on your Most Interesting Point (MIP) and your
Muddiest Point (MP) for each class. Your comments are anonymous and will
be input on TITANium. Each entry is worth 1/2 of a point, so 10 reflections will
give that maximum extra credit of 5 points.

CLASS
CONDUCT

1) Lectures (difficult concepts and student activities)

2) Homework assignments collected in the beginning of each Tuesdays lecture
(every week has a small homework)
3) Two 75-minute exams and a comprehensive final exam

DISABILITY
SUPPORT
SURVICES

Disability Support Services (DSS) offers a range of programs and services to

individuals with disabilities. Additional information can be found at
http://www.fullerton.edu/dss/. If you wish to inquire about DSS services, please
call 657-278-3112 or send an email to dsservices@fullerton.edu.

ACADEMIC
DISHONESTY

Constitutes academic dishonesty spelled out in UPS 300.021 about Academic

Dishonesty Policy. Academic Dishonesty Policy includes plagiarism, cheating
on exams, unauthorized collaboration and falsifying academic records. There
will not be tolerated for Academic Dishonesty. As results, the student will get
0 on an assignment and an "F" in the course. Additionally he/she will face the
following sanctions: dismissal from an academic unit; revocation of admission;
suspension from the university; revocation of degree and expulsion from the
University
