I. OBJECTIVE(S)

II. LESSON

At the end of the lesson, at least 75% of the students with 75 proficiency should be
able to compare the structures of DNA and RNA based on the ff.:
a. Number of strands
b. Location in the cell
c. Type of sugar
d. Nitrogenous base pair
A. UNIT 3 : Living Things and their Environment
Module 2 : Heredity: Inheritance and Variation
Topic: DNA and RNA Structures
B. Reference/s: Science Learners Material for Grade 10 pp. 263-268
C. Materials: pictures of DNA and RNA

III. LEARNING TASKS

A. ENGAGE

B. EXPLORE

C. EXPLAIN

1. Students will be given paper strips and they will be asked to write
words/phrases that they can relate to DNA.
2. A representative from each group will explain their answers.
1. Students will do Activity 1 Getting to Know the DNA and RNA Structure.
2. Remind learners to answer the guide questions.
3. Based from their output, they will compare the structures of the two in
terms of the ff;
a. Number of strands
b. Location in the cell
c. Type of sugar
d. Nitrogenous base pair
1. Answers to the ff. guide questions will be solicited from the students.

Q2. What is the structural difference between DNA and RNA? (DNA and RNA are
different in the following:
a. DNA is double stranded while RNA is single-stranded.
b. The sugar in DNA is deoxyribose while that in RNA is ribose.
c. The nitrogen bases in DNA are adenine (A), guanine (G), thymine (T) and
cytosine (C). In RNA are adenine, guanine, cytosine and uracil. )
Q3. What nitrogenous base is found in RNA but not in DNA? (Uracil)
KEY CONCEPTS:
A DNA is a double helix molecule composed of complementary
strands of deoxyribonucleotides units. The complementary base
pairs of the DNA are held by hydrogen bonds.
RNA is single stranded.
Examples of RNA types include: mRNA, rRNA and tRNA.
In DNA, adenine always bonds with thymine, and cytosine bonds
with guanine. In RNA, adenine bonds with uracil, and cytosine
bonds with guanine
Building a house usually requires a blueprint, or a plan of the structure
of the house to determine how it would look like after construction. Organisms have
blueprints which contain information that will determine their physical and
chemical characteristics. This blueprint is DNA.
