ELAGSE5RI2: Determine two or more main ideas of a text and

explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the
text.

After reading the book to the students, they will participate in a

class discussion on the main events of the book and then be
asked to put them on paper.

The students will be shown the bag and asked if they can think
and make educated guesses on what the book will be about based
on the appearance of the bag.

The students will be told that the book is from the civil war era
and that is a true story from the Underground Railroad. I will
then ask them to tell me what they already know about
Underground Railroad and slavery.

about the Underground Railroad and slavery.
-I will read the book to the students, pulling out the objects in the
bag when they appear in the book.
-Some of the objects are things that they may not have seen
before, so when these occur I will ask them to use context clues
to figure out what they are and we will discuss them.
-After the book has been read, I will take a minute to let the
students process and ask them their thoughts and comments on
the book.
-I will then ask the students to participate in a class discussion
where they will start from the beginning of the book and tell me
the main events throughout.
-After they have discussed the main events, I will give the
students a notecard.
-On this notecard I will ask them to write their names and
list the objects that correlate with the main events that we just
discussed.
-After the cards are collected, I will then have them raise their
hands and tell me again what the main events were.
