Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated , is an international service organization

that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. It is the

women. It currently has a membership of 283,000 women in graduate and undergraduate
chapters in the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, Canada, Japan,
Germany, Korea, on the continent of Africa, and now the Middle East. Under the leadership
of International President, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, the sororitys programmatic theme for
2014-2018 is "Launching New Dimensions of Service with five target areas that include
educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership,
and global impact. Through the educational enrichment target, members engage in the
sororitys signature youth enrichment program, ASCEND. ASCEND focuses
on Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking
and Developmental Skills. High school students in the ASCEND Program will have an
opportunity to receive academic enrichment and life skills training to support their journey
to college or vocational employment. The youth summit is a day-long opportunity to
highlight these goals and spotlight Delta Rho Omegas ASCENDProgram. For more

Delta Rho Omega is a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated , and was
chartered on November 15, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. Delta Rho Omega has always taken
seriously the Sororitys mandate to render service to all mankind, to improve the quality of
life for citizens worldwide, and to promote peace. Sixty-nine years ago, Delta Rho Omega
had fourteen members. Today, the chapter has over 175 members and is still growing.
In the early years of its existence, the chapter provided monetary and volunteer assistance
to the Brooklyn Home for the Aged, supported the YWCA and the National Council of Negro
Women, established a scholarship program, initiated an annual luncheon program in
recognition of an outstanding individual, launched a mental hygiene program that was
subsequently incorporated into the services of the Brooklyn Department of Health, and
provided public and financial support to the Civil Rights Movement. The chapters care and
concern for others continue today. Delta Rho Omegas programs and initiatives focus on
community service, economic literacy, health, cultural awareness, family, educational
advancement and mentoring, and international outreach. Examples of the chapters
programs include providing workshops and activities on leadership development, civic
engagement, academic preparation, and character building for Brooklyns high school aged
young men and women through the Sororitys signature ASCEND Program; working with
children; distributing holiday food baskets to needy families; organizing health fairs and
voter registration drives; providing home-buying seminars; financing and organizing parties
for children at the Queens Childrens Center; and interacting with the communitys seniors
through games, entertainment, and celebrations at Brooklyns Center for Nursing and
Rehabilitation. As the chapter enters its 69th year, it will continue to remain true to the
principles and ideals of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and to render service to all mankind.
