BACKGROUND

COURSE CONTENTS

Mathematical models are used in all aspects of

water infrastructures where prediction is a
major component i.e. from event forecasting
such as flood, tsunami, river and estuarine
flow to long term planning such as dam safety,
flood protection measures, water distribution
systems for various purposes. With the rapid
advancement in computational technology,
mathematical models are being widely used in
decision-making. These models can be used in
several ways namely, (a) conceptualization (b)
problem solving (c) setting up design
parameters and (d) advanced research leading
to application. However, they require huge
datasets as inputs for flow simulations. Such
inputs include digital elevation model for
representing the topography of the domain,
land use map to account for bed roughness,
hydrological and meteorological data such as
hydrograph, rating curve, rainfall, etc. The
main concern in using these data sets is that
they change over the time and space. Hence,
for better prediction by the hydraulic models
the database needs to be updated periodically.
This can be simplified by using Geographical
Information System (GIS). The integration of
GIS and hydraulic models eliminates the need
to manually update separate datasets for the
hydraulic models and the GIS database. Such
integration makes the hydraulic models to be
sustainable with respect to the dynamic
changes to the database system. Nevertheless,
the model results can be easily fed into the GIS
for better visualization on the high-resolution
maps, advanced analysis and applications. The
aim of the workshop is to provide the basic
concepts involved in the development of free
surface flow modelling, pre and post processing
through freely available QGIS. The focus will
also be on applications pertaining to Indian
context through case studies.
