STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I have always been inspired by an illustrious quote by George Bernard Shaw, People see
things; and they say, why? But I dream things that never were; and I say, why
not? Undoubtedly, mankind has witnessed remarkable scientific advancements that have
created opportunities for growth in newer dimensions which were, ab initio, out of
paradigm of human imagination.
Sir Alexander Fleming defined new horizons for modern antibiotics with his discovery of
Penicillin in 1928. Others like Gertrude Belle Elion, Jonas Salk, Dr. Frederick Grant
Banting, amongst others, also played colossal roles in drug discoveries. I aspire to be a part
of this exciting pursuit of unlocking various medical mysteries for the preservation and
betterment of mankind. In this regard, I fervently yearn to pursue a Masters degree in
Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology, which would prepare me towards working in the
Research and Development sector of a reputed Pharmaceutical company someday.
Throughout the course of my Bachelors degree program in Biochemistry, I got several
opportunities to expand my practical as well as research skills. However, to broaden my
ken with thorough clinical exposure, I had to advance my career in the path of MBBS. As
a medical student, I was exposed to a vast gamut of subjects. But the particular one that
intrigued me most was Pharmacology. The whole process of drug discovery, uncovering
its actions in the human body and pharmacodynamics/ pharmacokinetic properties, kept
me captivated from the very inception.
To gain more experience and insight, I assisted some of the MSc students of the department
of Biochemistry, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Anambra state, on their projects in 2006.
During this period, I chose to assist in two projects, but the one that fascinated me most
was based on the Renoprotective effect of methanolic extract of Portulaca oleracea on
Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Wistar Rats. The whole experience, not only helped
boost my confidence, but it also cemented my desire to pursue a career in research oriented
discipline.

I am a person with technical aptitude and interested in its utilization towards developing
scientific techniques and efficient research models to conceptualize the fundamental
mechanism underlying human diseases, in order to develop therapeutic cures against them.
I cannot think of a more apt statement to label what I expect out of a graduate research
program. It will not only help mold my disposition, but the guidance provided by the
eminent professors and connoisseurs in the sphere of research, will definitely play an
enormous role in honing my skills as a researcher and specialist as well. Thus, I believe an
MSc in Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology would, in addition to helping me further my
research career, also aid me realize my lifelong dream of making an indelible mark in the
world of Medical Science
