collecting and reinfusing blood lost by a

patient during surgery
collect blood wash with saline
o
Hct: 50-60% concentrate
RBCs
Blood is collected from a drainage tube
@ the surgical site
Blood char: DILUTED, PARTIALLY
HEMOLYZED, DEFIBRINATED
Recommendation: 1400 mL
Reinfusion: w/in 6 hours
a unit collected under the same
requirements as those for allogeneic
donors, except that the unit collected is
directed toward a specific patient.
tag for the directed unit is a distinct
color (e.g., yellow, salmon) to
differentiate it from autologous tags
If the donor is a blood relative, the unit
must be irradiated to prevent graft
versus host disease where viable T cells
from the donor enter the patients
circulation and mount an attack against
patient cells and tissue.

Collection

Donates blood for his or her own use;

thus, such a donor is referred to as the
donor patient.
Safer than allogeneic blood. There is no
risk of disease transmission, transfusion
reactions, or alloimmunization to white
blood cells, RBCs, platelets, or plasma
proteins.
A viable and common alternative
therapy for many patients undergoing
transfusion
indications:
orthopedic procedures
vascular surgery
cardiac/thoracic surgery
radical prostatectomy
last blood collection: no sooner than 72
hours before the scheduled surgery
blood is reinfuse to the Px within 8 hours
of collection
reinfusion will start after a blood loss of
1800ml or transfusion trigger of 20%
reinfusion is in reverse order

donation interval: 2 days/48 hours

not to exceed more than 2x a week or
24x a year
patients who ingested aspirin are
deferred
platelet count: not required during 1st
donation
required if duration interval is <4
weeks
PC = >150,000/uL
donor, either occasional or serial
interval: at least 48 hours
max. of 2 donations/week
serum/plasma
must be tested for TP and serum
protein electrophoresis or quantitative
immunoglobulins
uses special agents for granulocyte
collection
hydroxyethyl starch
corticosteroids
granulocyte-colony stimulating factor
= growth factor e.g.
interval: 16 weeks
male donors: at least 130 lb, 51 height
female donors: at least 150 lb, 55
height
Hct: at least 40%
