Part II of a three-part report
(Continued from last week. Mrs.
Rasco’s family moved back to Mis-
sissippi from Chicago. Her late hus-
band, who ran a night club once
owned by his nephew, refused to
make payoffs to the Scott County
sheriff. “Much of this stems from
how Jamie and Gladys got in jail,”
she said at the conclusion of Part I)
“Jamie and Gladys were always
high-spirited girls. They were hard
workers. They worked everyday.
Jamie was working at one of the
local chicken plants and Gladys was
working at Kentucky Fried
Chicken. They grew up going to
church together as a family. We
loved to go fishing. We went to the
ballgames together—and went to a
lot of them too. And we celebrated
with family cookouts. We cele-
brated life and loving each other.
They didn’t finish high school, nei-
ther one of them. They dropped out
of school and decided that they
wanted to work after they started
having children. Jamie did get her

GED. Gladys took the test about
three times. Regardless, they knew
the importance of getting an educa-
tion.”
“I raised them to not be preju-
diced—to find the common good in
everyone and treat all beings with
respect. I never taught them to be
biased or judgmental toward any-
one. I raised them to be good people
and to do the right thing. This is
what I instilled in them and they did
that. They never hurt anyone. They
loved the country life here in Mis-
sissippi because it was quiet and
peaceful. It was a different life for
them. They have never been in any
trouble until THIS happened!” Eve-
lyn Rasco exclaims, “I can't re-
member everything in sequential
order, but I will talk as it comes to
me.”
“In 1993, Jamie and Gladys went
to Forest to run some errands and
the car broke down. They walked to
the mini-mart. Some guys came out
of the store. Jamie knew one of the
guys. She asked him if they would
take them home for $10.00. She
planned to get my husband to go
back and get the car. The guys

agreed to take them home. He told
her, yes. Gladys asked if she could
drive. Jamie was in the back seat of
the car. The other guy that was in the
back seat started to make passes at
Jamie. He was pulling at her
clothes. So Gladys stopped the car.
They got out of the car and pro-

them. They replied that Jamie and
Gladys Scott were with the guys

and they got set up. The case began
to be put into effect and rise from
there. I believe that was what the
victims were told to use. Jamie
and Gladys never robbed them,
never took anything from them
and never harmed them.”
