Introduction
This assessment activity requires you to evaluate the effectiveness of a ten week
training programme that you will take part in as preparation for participating in the
Three Peaks mountain running race or the Otago Peninsula Challenge. The Three
Peaks will be held on Sunday April 9 and the Otago Peninsula Challenge will be
held on Sunday April 30.
Your evaluation, which will be in the form of a written report, will be assessed on the
extent to which you critically evaluate the effectiveness of the programme. This will
involve: making coherent, insightful judgements by questioning and challenging
assumptions about the effectiveness of a performance improvement programme; and
using those judgements to identify and justify what modification(s) may be made to
improve the effectiveness of the programme. You will not be assessed on the quality
of your training programme.
The due date for the evaluation is Friday May 12.

Task
Preparation
Before you begin, reflect on these questions:
Work with your class to research and define the skills/ability/knowledge required in
the performance of mountain running/biking. You can use this information to help
you evaluate your own skills/ability/knowledge/tactical awareness and improvements
in them over the course of the performance improvement programme.
Throughout the programme, you will collect information/evidence about your
performance and your ability to improve your skills/knowledge/tactical awareness in
preparation for a mountain running race.
Establish benchmarks for mountain running/biking so that you have baseline data
from which to judge the effectiveness of the training programme.
Develop an outcome goal for your race based on your benchmarks (for example, a
completion time of three hours and 15 minutes). Use this goal for your training and as
a measure of your final improvement.
Participate in a ten week training programme designed to improve your performance
in a mountain running race. Some training sessions will be held in class time, but you
must supplement this with out-of-school training time.

Take checkpoint tests throughout your programme to monitor and provide evidence
of your improvement against your benchmarks.
Use a consistent method for collecting the same type of data at each stage so that
you will be able to compare it and evaluate any changes. Use of a fitness application
on your phone would be particularly beneficial.
You may work with classmates/teachers/coaches to video your performance at
various stages and to help you develop a body of evidence about your initial
skills/ability/knowledge regarding mountain running/biking , your progress, and your
skills/ability/knowledge as demonstrated in the actual race.
Resource A provides a series of questions that you may find helpful when reflecting
on the programme and your participation in it.
Report
Once you have collected your data, evaluate it and prepare your report. This is an
individual task. You will have three weeks of school time after the race to complete
the write up.
Your report must evaluate the effectiveness of the performance improvement
programme and incorporate supporting evidence (for example, from your training log)
gathered over the three data collection stages.
You may find that Resource B is helpful when planning your report.
You may like to include digital/visual media such as diagrams, photos, or session
plans in your report.
Your report must be in your own words. Acknowledge those who took photos or
videos for you.

The following questions and prompts may help you to prepare your report.
Did you achieve the aims, goals, and objectives of each session? Explain.
What skills/ability/knowledge/tactical awareness did you improve over the
performance improvement programme?
Did your application of motor learning strategies help you to improve your
performance? Why or why not? (Consider, for example, feedback, knowledge of
results, knowledge of performance, types of practice, types of skill, stages of
learning, factors affecting learning, information processing, muscle memory.)
Did your application of biomechanical principles help you to improve your
performance? Why or why not? (Consider, for example, Newtons laws of motion,
force summation, levers, types of motion, forces, power, stability, acceleration,
speed, projectile motion.)
Did your application of functional anatomy help to improve your performance?
Why or why not? (Consider, for example, anatomical movement, muscular
actions, movement analysis.)
Did your application of sports psychology help to improve your performance?
Why or why not? (Consider, for example, concentration, control, confidence,
relaxation, mental imagery, goal setting, motivation, arousal, visualisation.)
Did your application of exercise physiology help to improve your performance?
Why or why not? (Consider, for example, short-term and long-term effects of
exercise, fitness components, principles of training and methods of training).
On the whole, did your performance improve following the six-week programme?
Revisit your initial ideas about performance improvement programmes.
Consider again who influenced your ideas about performance improvement
programmes.
Have you confirmed the validity of these ideas, or do they remain assumptions?
For each assumption, consider the part played by business, media, and other
groups in forming it. Who is advantaged/disadvantaged by it? How does it come
to have influence? What are the potential consequences?
