Kindergarten News

Hello Parents,
January has been SNOW much fun! We explored snow and everything winter has to
offer, including snowflakes and winter animals. Through many winter activities we have
worked

on

number

sense

concepts,

like

number

recognition,

counting,

to

correspondence, and quantifying. We have also worked on composing and decomposing

numbers to 10. Measurement concepts have also been incorporated into our winter learning.
Students have learned all about length and weight and the proper math words (heavy/light,
short/long, cubes, and equal to). In language, we have focused on letters J, K, and L and
have continued journal writing for both JK and SK. Students have been practicing sentence
writing with proper punctuation and letter formation. This month, we have started guided
reading. Students have been put into groups and read together with the teachers. This
differs for each student, as some students are working on letter sounds, while others are
working on sounding out sight words when reading. Our students have been working hard
and

we

are

so

proud

of

them!

Curriculum Highlights:
February is here!! Students have enjoyed learning all about winter animals, and so
our next inquiry will be all about bears. In math, we will continue to focus on number sense
for the month of February; for JKs counting and 1:1 correspondence for numbers 1-10, and
for SKs counting 1-30 and spelling numbers one to ten, and composing and decomposing
numbers. Measurement will also be wrapped up this month; using non-standard
measurement tools for length, weight, and height, as well as using connected math terms.

In language, we will also continue to focus on letter sounds, new sight words, proper
sentence writing.
This months virtue is Respect. In the classroom, we will continue to encourage the
students to make good choices and be kind to their teachers and peers, in order to create
a safe and loving classroom environment. This concept will be further taught in the
classroom through read-alouds, modeling, and real life classroom experiences. In keeping
with the Valentines Day theme, we will all be making kindness hearts for each other.

Odds and Ends:

If you are bringing in Valentines Day treats for the class, please
remember non-edible treats only! We have 10 boys and 11 girls. Thanks
for your cooperation!

Read, Read, Read! We are encouraging students to read as much as possible. This
can mean reading with a parent or reading independently. Students are also encouraged to
take out leveled reading books from the library or check out class poems posted on the
website.
Parent-Teacher Conferences: Our parent-teacher conferences will be happening during
the week of Feb 6-10. Confirmation of interview time will be sent out the first week of
February. We have done our best to accommodate everyones preferred days and times.
Please remember interview are 10 minutes long (maximum). We will keep you posted as to
where the interviews will be held as our classroom is being used daily by PLASP for
before/after school program. We are looking forward to meeting with you all to discuss
the progress of your child.
**Please make sure snacks are nut free, as there are other students in the school with
allergies.
Remember that you can contact us whenever you have a question or concern. Simply put a
note in your childs Communication Folder, chat with us as you are dropping your child off in
the morning, or call the school at 905-840-5020.
