What Were Learning

ocial Studies
We are having loads of fun in social studies this year. The
changes in our government are always a heated topic of
debate, and its interesting to keep up with all the latest
news via CNN 10. Social studies time is also when we do
all of our practicing for the academic bowl and the
students really look forward to showing off their mad
academic skills.

PE
Every other month, our students complete a physical
fitness test through the Presidential Youth Fitness
Program. The test covers a broad range of fitness areas
through a timed run, BMI assessment, and multiple other
fitness measurements. Student aerobic capacity is
tested, as well as flexibility and strength. Our goal is to
give our youth the best physical education and
assessment we can provide.

Note from the Teachers

The new year brought in new laptops for our students. They are MacBook Pros, just like our old laptops, but they
are faster and have more updates.
The talent show in December was a big success. We have a group of talented students and professionals out
here. Our hands hurt from clapping so much!
The students completed the Alive at 25 Driving Education course in December. Designed by the National Safety
Council, the training was 4.5 hours long and focused on defensive driving and decision making skills. A big
thank-you to Melanie Coon for helping to get it set up. Melanie also arranged for the Southwest Applied
Technology College here in Cedar City to come to us on January 20 to talk about possible careers available
through their education programs. They also brought in some machines from their robotics program. Very cool!
Our school has been asked to participate in an Academic Bowl in March. We are studying and having a blast
practicing on Kahoot, a quiz game website. We will send our top four students to compete against other facilities
from around the state.
Throughout the month of February, we will participate in the Unbound Reading program. As part of the program,
students will log their minutes spent reading and compare them to other students nation-wide. We will also
participate in the Readathon, which is an all day reading extravaganza, on the last day of the month.
