Istisqaa prayer ushers in much needed rains

T
he Meteorological department had al-
ready forecasted grim times for Kenyans
as it warned that the severe drought
conditions being experienced in many parts of
the country are set to continue.
As a result of the dry conditions, thousands of
livestock have died due to severe shortage of
water and pasture while more than 2 million
Kenyans are at risk of starvation.
According to the weatherman, Kenyans will
have to wait at least till March till their start
experiencing a change in weather conditions
which heralds the long rains.
This prediction however, failed to dampen
hopes for Muslims who held the belief that
seeking divine intervention can change the
present conditions and usher in the much
needed rains which will alleviate the suffering
of people and animals.
It is from this background that thousands of
Muslims assembled at the Sir Ali Muslim Club
in Nairobi on Sunday for the special prayers
for rain (salatul Istisqaa) to implore Allah to
send the rains. The same scenario was repli-
cated on the same day in Kibera where hun-
dreds of the faithful also converged at Masjid
al Aqsa for the special prayers.
In humbleness, the young and old, men and
women congregated for the prayers at Sir Ali
Muslim Club for the special prayers.
The prayers were led by the Imam of Lan-
dhies Mosque Sheikh Ahmad Uthman and
his sermon, (khutbah) revolved around the
need for Muslims to turn to the Creator in
sincere repentance and beseeching Him to
alleviate the sufferings caused by lack of
rain. Some of these calamities which we
are experienced are a result of the misdeeds
which people are committing. We need to
repent and turn back to Allah, he told the
congregation.
Sheikh Ahmad explained that the
prayer was the Sunnah (way of the
Prophet peace be upon him) stating

and famine, he used to perform the

Like the Makonde, Nubians also need recognition
It is now official. The Makonde are the 43rd
tribe of Kenya. On Wednesday, President
Uhuru Kenyatta issued the community with
identification documents ending their long-
standing efforts to gain recognition as Ken-
yan citizens.
The Makonde, known for their woodcarving
activities are originally from Mozambique.
They came to the country in the 1960s to
seek economic opportunities and settled in
Kwale where their community who number
about 4,000 individuals.
For decades, they have been involved in
strenuous efforts to get government recog-
nition without success as the government
has argued that they Mozambicans rather
than Kenyans.
Over the years, civil rights groups and
the Kenya National Commission on Hu-
man Rights (KNCHR) have called on the
government to recognize them as Kenyan
citizens and issue them with identification
documents.
For the last 50 years, the Makonde have
virtually in a state of statelessness where
they find it difficult to get employment in ad-
dition to other important government ser-
vices such as health and education.
While we applaud the government for tak-
ing the bold step to address this issue, at
the same time it is important to recognize
that there are other Kenyan communities in

Top on the list are the Nubian commu-
nity. The Nubians who number more than
100,000 individuals have lived in the coun-
try for more than a century. They were
brought into the country from what is pre-
sent day South Sudan by the British Colo-
nialist and resettled in several areas nota-
bly Kibera.
The present generation of Nubians do not
know any other country apart from Kenya,
a country which they recognize Kenya as
their homeland.
Successive regimes have since independ-
ence deliberately denied them recognition
and they have faced bottlenecks deliber-
ately placed in their path to deny them citi-
zenship.
A significant number of Nubians lack iden-
tification documents, an aspect which has
been a hindrance when it comes to access-
ing employment and other basic services
provided by the government and the pri-
vate sector.
A big chunk of their more than 4,000 acres
of land in Kibera has been lost through
forcible appropriation by the government
and individuals who have taken advantage
of their state of statelessness and lack
of ownership documents to violate their

Like the Makonde, they have severally
called for government recognition but un-

Besides the Nubians, there are other Ken-
yan indigenous communities who contin-
ued to undergo similar situations but their
issues have received little attention due to
lack of stronger voices to articulate their
concerns.
Despite living for centuries in the areas
straddling Lamu and Tana River counties,
the Boni and Sanye face similar predica-
ment like the Nubians and their faint voices
appear not to have reached anywhere.
As we applaud the head of state for per-
sonally taking the initiative which ultimately
saw the Makonde being recognized as
Kenyan citizens, the cries of the Nubians
and other Kenyan communities who are
suffering as a result of lack of recognitions
need to be heard and addressed.
This state of injustice has left painful sores
in the hearts of generations of people who
feel isolated virtually find themselves as
prisoners who can seldom leave their ar-
eas and are locked out from many basic
services which could see them realize
their potential and dreams as productive
members of the society.
Matiangi said that with the new develop-
ment, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Ed-
ucation (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate
of Secondary Education (KCSE) are set
to come to an end by May 2017. He was
however, quick to point out that religious
education will not be scrapped off from the
curriculum, stating that children should be
brought up in a God-fearing society.

Importance of following the sunnah

The Qur'an is the last divine book, which
was revealed from Allah as a declaration
and guidance to mankind. It is an expla-
nation of all things and means for men
to be rightly guided. In many verses of
the Qur'an, it is commanded to obey the
prophet of Allah. This is quite a significant
point because understanding the Qur'an
fully can only be possible with following the
Sunnah of the prophet.
The Sunnah is the explanation of the
Qur'an. It is the creed of ahl-i Sunnah,
which has been constituted with collect-
ing true hadiths of the prophet Muhammad
(sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam), and inter-
pretation of these hadiths by great schol-
ars in later times.
It's worth dwelling upon a point here. The
Sunnah is not a concept that can be dealt
with separately from the Qur'an. In the
Qur'an, it has been mentioned that the
prophet removes heavy burdens, makes
rules, teaches the ummah (society) the
open and hidden meanings of the Qur'an.
As a matter of fact, when we look at the
practices of Sunnah, we see that the
prophet of Allah gave His companions a lot
of information about numerous subjects.
This information was then interpreted by
scholars of the time, continued to be prac-
tised in daily lives and has passed on to us
generations to generations.
Allah has informed in the surah Al-e Imran
that the Prophet had the characteristic of
teaching the Qur'an and purifying mankind:
Certainly Allah conferred a benefit upon
the believers when He raised among them
a Messenger from among themselves, re-
citing to them His communications and pu-
rifying them, and teaching them the Book
and the wisdom, although before that they
were surely in manifest error. (Surah Al-e
Imran, 164)
It would be useful to attract attention to
the phrase "teaching the book and the
wisdom". Because, It is not possible to un-
derstand the Qur'an fully and practise its
commands without following the sunnah of
the prophet of Allah. Our religion is a whole
only with the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
At that times when the Qur'an was re-
vealed, the people around the prophet
learned and practised the commands
of our religion as required by looking at
the examples of the prophet. Indeed, the
prophet has been an important example
with His life, where he practised the com-
mands of the religion, for us to understand
the Qur'an.
We can give "salat" (ritual prayers) as a
clear example to understanding the com-
mands of the religion. As well known, in
Islam, performing salat 5 times a day is
an obligation and there are verses giving
general information about how to perform
it, how to perform ablution (wash).
However, we can understand how exactly
we should perform prayers only by looking
at sunnah. Because there is no detailed

information in the verses about the way of
praying, what to say in prayer, the way of
man and woman's performing the prayer,
the degree of importance of the prayers,
the details of ablution, what nullifies ab-
lution. We can learn such details only by
looking at Sunnah of the prophet.
As another example, we can mention the
suggestions of the prophet about Friday
and the things He said about Friday prayer.
Beside the subjects such as speaking that
which is best, cleanness, foods, modesty,
there are verses in the Qur'an about obli-
gations such as fasting, ablution and hajj
(pilgrimage). However, there is no detailed
information about those worships in the
verses. We learn the detail information
about how to perform these worships from
the interpretations of the scholars about
the words and habits of the prophet.
Sunnah has etched the lives of Muslims
throughout the history, of all past scholars
of Islam, shaping their worships. Since
the era of our prophet, which has been
hundreds of years, the Muslims have wor-
shipped in compliance with the Sunnah.
Worships like praying five times a day, fast-
ing, giving charity and sacrificing have not
changed until today as they have been al-
ways performed according to the Sunnah.
For this reason, starting discussions upon
the worships, which have been practised
for hundreds of years without change, and
speculating about the subjects like time
of the prayers, the number of the rakaats
(units) are completely unnecessary. All of
them are obligatory worships, whose de-
tails are described in the Sunnah. As a
matter of fact, when we look at the Qur'an,
we see many verses in the Qur'an about
following the Messenger. In a verse, for
example, Allah commands us to obey the
Messenger as follows:
Surely We have sent you as a witness and
as a bearer of good news and as a warner,
That you may believe in Allah and His Mes-
senger and may aid him and revere him;
and (that) you may declare His glory, morn-
ing and evening. Surely those who swear
allegiance to you do but swear allegiance
to Allah; the hand of Allah is above their
hands.
Therefore whoever breaks (his faith), he
breaks it only to the injury of his own soul,
and whoever fulfils what he has covenant-
ed with Allah, He will grant him a mighty
reward. (Surah Al-Fath, 8-10)
Whoever obeys the Messenger, he indeed
obeys Allah, and whoever turns back, so
We have not sent you as a keeper over
them. (Surah An-Nisa, 80)
The point one needs to pay attention in the
verses is that they emphasise on the con-
cept of "obeying the Messenger". This point
shows us that following the Messenger, in
other words following His commands and
rules is a worship that Allah brought as an
obligation. When we look at the verses,
we again see that our prophet has the
authority to enjoin and forbid things. For
example, the verse ".... and whatever the
Messenger gives you, accept it, and from
whatever he forbids you, keep back, and
be careful of (your duty to) Allah. (Surah
Al-Hashr, 7) shows that the prophet may
forbid certain things for His ummah, apart
from those things that are forbidden in the
Qur'an. Besides, it is again informed in the
verses that the believers took the matters
that they did not understand to the prophet
and the prophet judged for them.
Those conducts, on the other hand, such
as opposing the Messenger's being a
judge, or disrespecting His judgements
are described in the verses as "transgres-
sion". The certainty of the judgement of
our prophet and the need for obeying His
judgement is stressed in another verse as
follows: It is not fitting for a Believer, man
or woman, when a matter has been de-
cided by Allah and His Messenger to have
any option about their decision: if any one
disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is
indeed on a clearly wrong Path. (Surah Al-
Ahzab, 36)
As seen up to here, Allah commands in His
verses a strict obedience to His prophet.
For this reason, Islam can only be lived
through practising the Sunnah along with
the Qur'an. The explanations made in the
verses related to this subject are certain.
Therefore, putting forward a claim of turn-
ing away from the sunnah of the prophet
is completely opposite to the essence of
the Qur'an.
Imam Malik, one of the greatest Islam
scholars, compared the Sunnah of the
prophet to the ark of Nuh and said : The
Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (sal-
lallahu `alayhi wa sallam) is like the Ark
of Nuh. Whoever embarks upon it reach-
es salvation and whoever refuses is
drowned." The true salvation will be real-
ised only when the creed of ahl-i Sunnah

When I grow up I wanna be Abu Bakr!
Role Models. In his book Risaalat Al-
Mu'allim, Jamal Abideen tells us that at the
age of 2 perhaps earlier the boy or girl
begins habitually imitating all that they see.
At the age of 5 or 6 when the child is in
kindergarten and grade 1 they reach a
climax in imitating anything that they see,
good or bad. Then this habit of imitating
smoothes out but continues to play the
most vital role in the child's upbringing.
Ibn Khaldoon writes in his Muqaddimah
about this issue: "Children are influenced
most by a role model. In their early years,
children think that everything that adults do
is correct and good and that their parents
are the best amongst the adults and the
most perfect."
Children do not learn by being told, they
learn by example. How much weight does
a commandment to a child to fast have
when the parent or teacher himself is eat-
ing a sandwich? For this reason, it is some-
thing hated and despised by Allah that a
person should command good and he
himself do other than what he commands.
For indeed, his words will have little worth
when the two his actions and command-
ments - are contradictory. Whatsoever is
in the heavens and whatsoever is on the
earth glorifies Allah. Why do you say that
which you do not do? / Most hateful it is
with Allah that you say that which you do
not do. (Surat Al-Saff (61): 3).
The severity of this warning stems from the
harmful scars that cut into a child's person-
ality when he sees his role models doing
wrong and not doing what's right. By us not
following what we claim to believe in, we
could be causing the destruction of dozens
of lives on the Day of Resurrection.
It is in this search for our role models
that we turn to the shining light, Abu Bakr
as Siddeeq radi Allahu anhu. When the
Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam re-
ceived the first revelations, the first man he
approached was his best friend, Abu Bakr.
When Abu Bakr radhi Allahu anhu heard
that Muhammad had been chosen as a
Prophet, he immediately announced, "I've
never tasted a lie from you. I testify that
there is no God but Allah, and you are
the Messenger of Allah." RasulAllah later
said, "There is no one that I have spoken
to about Islam that did not debate the issue
with me except Abu Bakr."
In the early days of Islam, Abu Bakr radi
Allahu anhu would walk around the mar-
kets and homes observing all the Muslim
slaves that were being tortured. He would
watch as Umayyah dragged Bilal out to the
grilling desert at noontime, the hottest mo-
ments of the day. Umayyah would press
Bilal to the scalding ground and place a
boulder on top of his chest to increase the
torture. Bilal would say nothing but, "Ahad,
Ahad (One, only One)."
Abu Bakr went to Umayyah and request-
ed that he sell Bilal to him for 5 uwqiyyah
of gold. Umayyah was astonished at that

amount and hurriedly agreed. "Take Bilal.
There is no good in him."
After the deal was done, Umayyah snick-
ered, "Had you refused to pay more than
1 uwqiyyah I still would have sold him to
you." And Abu Bakr announced, "And had
you refused to sell him for no less than 100
uwqiyyah I still would have bought him!"
Evil wishers like always spread rumors
about Abu Bakrs freeing of Bilal, saying
that he did it only because of a favor he
owed him. In the Quran, in verses to be
recited till the end of time, Allah lay clear
the intentions of Abu Bakr: He who spends
his wealth for increase in self-purification,
And have in his mind no favor from anyone
for which a reward is expected in return,
Except only the desire to seek the Coun-
tenance of his Lord, the Most High; / He
surely will be pleased [when he will enter
Paradise] (Al-Layl 92/18-21).
Who are our role models?
Have you ever sat with your children or
some Muslim neighbor's children? Give
them a basketball and lower the rim for
them and listen to what they say. All with
a few exceptions will call out the name
of a non-Muslim basketball player as they
take the shot. You'll hear the name of Mi-
chael Jordan shouted out and others, a
name that comes from their heart as they
slam the ball in glee.
Listen carefully; they are innocently call-
ing to the world, "I wanna be a non-Muslim
basketball player, just like Jordan." Don't
be surprised when they reach university,
after they've lost their precious youth, that
they can spit a ball into a basket with unbe-
lievable precision, yet they cannot read Al-
Fatiha without fumbling like a baby. On the
Day of Resurrection, these entertainment
idols shall disown all those that took them
as role models and imitated their sins.
Look at the real models and the children
that took them as their models. Aisha nar-
rates that RasulAllah used to visit them in
the mornings and in the evenings. But one
day he came at noon time a time that sig-
nified something different was happening.
Abu Bakr radhi Allahu anhu opened the
door and RasulAllah announced that Allah
had given him permission to do Hijrah to
Madinah. Abu Bakr bounced out, "Togeth-
er, Yaa RasulAllah, together!"

Look at the Hijrah incident and you shall
see that all the characters involved other
than Abu Bakr were children. Aisha and
her brother Abd ArRahmaan. Asmaa was
slapped in the face by Abu Jahl when she
refused to tell him where her father was.
The guide that took them to Madinah was
also a young boy. Subhan Allah, these
children grew up to be amongst the great-
est humans to ever walk this earth. How
not when they had the greatest role mod-
els RasulAllah and Abu Bakr.After over
10 years of da'wah and jihaad in Madinah,
when RasulAllah passed away, 'Umar
called all the people, sharpened his sword
and spoke. "Muhammad is not dead. He
went to his Lord as Musa went to his Lord
and he shall come back as Musa did. When
he does, he shall kill all those who said he
was dead."News reached Abu Bakr of the
Prophet's death.
He prepared himself and galloped on his
horse to RasulAllah's home. There, Ra-
sulAllah lay covered in a cloth. Abu Bakr
raised the cloth and kissed RasulAllah
saying, "Tibta Hayyan wa Mayyitan (You
are blessed in life and in death)." He then
stepped outside as 'Umar was address-
ing the people. "Sit down 'Umar," said
Abu Bakr. He then praised Allah and be-
gan, "Whoever worships Muhammad let
him know that Muhammad is dead, and
whoever Allah let him know that Allah is
alive and never dies." He then recited the
verse:Muhammad is nothing more than a
Messenger. Messengers came and went
before him. If he dies or is killed shall you
turn on your heels?Umar said, "When I
heard that verse, my knees became soft as
I fell. I knew that RasulAllah had died."
Soon after that, Abu Bakr sent out the army
of Usama. Usama was 18 at that time, the
age of one of our youth in grade 12. He led
an entire Muslim army, fought the Romans
and came home victorious, breeding fear in
all those that wanted to attack the Muslims
in Madinah.As Usama was leaving Madi-
nah, Abu Bakr was escorting his horse as
he walked along side it. Usama said, "You
shall ride with me or I shall come down and
walk." But Abu Bakr refused saying, "You
shall not come down and I shall not ride.
What harm does it bring me that I should
dust my feet in the cause of Allah for an
hour of the day."
Indeed, Usama reached this position be-
cause he had role models like Abu Bakr.
Many parents have understood this issue
of finding the correct role models for their
children. Here is an example that we con-
clude with: In a kindergarten classroom, a
non-Muslim teacher sat with the students
and asked each one what they want to be
when they grow up. One said, "I want to
be a policeman." The other announced, "I
want to be a fireman." Then a Muslim boy
in the crowd spoke up, "I want to be a Sa-
haabee!" A what?
When parent teacher conferences came
up, the teacher asked the parents about
this Sahaabee that their son wanted to be
when he grew up. They said, "Whenever
we have the chance we read stories of the
Prophet's companions to him. They have
become his role models. And when he be-
comes older he wants to be just like the
Sahaabaa."

Could Trump actually be good for Muslims and Islam?
Donald Trump has moved seamlessly
from President-elect to President. In fact,
so seamless has been the transition that
he seems identical to the one who started
as the prospective Republican nominee.
Trump is just as egocentric, brash, brazen
and still as Twitter-obsessed as he has al-
ways been. For all his faults, one thing that
he is not is fickle. He has unashamedly
maintained his anti-Muslim rhetoric which
has, true to his words, now been enacted
through one of his many executive orders.
Trump famously campaigned on a pledge
to ban all Muslims from entering the United
States. This pledge has seen Trump sign
an executive order banning migration into
the United States from seven Muslim coun-
tries. The ban is without doubt illegal under
US law,[1] however try telling that to Trump
and his entourage.
This is all quite surreal. At each and every
step of his journey, from business tycoon
to President of the United States of Amer-
ica, I kept thinking that he would fall at the
next hurdle. Instead, he has, from the lofty
heights of the Oval Office, now signed a
piece of paper to execute the ban he so
unashamedly advocated.
One thing he never accounted for was the
swathe of sympathy that such blatantly dis-
criminatory policies would generate within
the American public. Up and down the Unit-
ed States, people have protested, demon-
strated and shown solidarity with the Mus-
lims. Protests have taken place at many
cities and airports including Washington,
Orlando, Atlanta and Seattle.[2]
Such solidarity with the Muslims is not an
isolated incident. Actress Kathy Najimy
encouraged all women to wear a hijab or
headscarf at an anti-inauguration dem-
onstration held in Washington.[3] She
described it as a way to stand alongside
their about-to-be-disenfranchised Muslim
Sisters.
Levels of discontent and protest have now
spread across the world. Demonstrations
have even been happening in towns and
cities across the United Kingdom. A peti-
tion to prevent Trump attending a State
Visit to the United Kingdom has attracted
nearly 2 million signatures and counting.
Their displeasure is clearly indicative of a
nation which feels that the UK should not
welcome a president who has the audacity
to implement a ban on Muslims in his own
country. Added to this invitation, which is
being seen as tacit consent to the Trump
order, there is resentment that the visit
would be a State Visit with all its pomp and
ceremony and paid via the public purse.

Several schools in North Eastern are on
the verge of closure due to water shortage
caused by the prolonged drought facing
the country. The region is currently reeling
from the devastating effects of the drought

In Mandera, the Kenya National Union of
Teachers (KNUT) has sounded warning
over the water crisis threatening learning
in many schools. The KNUT executive
secretary Muhammad Kullow Sheikh said
instead of learning, students are spending
more time in search of water. Our board-

ing given two tanks of water being ferried
by water bowsers, which is not enough to
our students, a solution should be found if
teaching is to go on smoothly, he said.

An individual is determined to be under a disabled if his/her physi-
cal or mental impairment or impairments are of such severity that
he/she is not only unable to do his previous work but cannot, con-
sidering his age, education, and work experience, engage in any
other kind of substantial gainful work which exists in the national
economy, regardless of whether such work exists in the immedi-
ate area in which he lives, or whether a specific job vacancy exists
for him, or whether he would be hired if he applied for work. Many
cases derive from complexities that developed at the time of birth
or before.
Disability both physical and mental comes in various forms and
kinds. We have disabilities that go up to the extent of autism, al-
binism, sight impairment and spinal paralysis. Ummah Founda-
tion has diversified in its dealing with the various categories as
we offer the required disability aids that range from wheel chairs,
tri-cycles, blind canes, crutches, sun glasses and screens. These
are equipments that the disabled community need in very high
demand. The Foundation has closely been involved in the field
and experience has taught us the existing categories and their
needs. We have also learnt that provision of these equipments
to our physically or mentally challenged gives relief and hope for
those who cant afford. More especially in the poor rural setups
where ignorance dominate, many are relegated and left to strug-
gle without receiving the necessary support. A sad story was in the
social media of a young girl in a village who scrolls for many miles
on her four limbs to get to the source of water.
These are the ordeals our mentally and physically disadvantaged
people daily go through. The mentally deranged are condemned
to life of loitering or kept in chains in a secluded area within the
homestead.
The stigma that goes with disability has forced some families
never to expose their children in public and even shy off from get-
ting them access help from the government health facilities. This
cuts across all communities and even Muslims are not left behind.
Statistics have shown that the actual figure of people living with
disabilities is far higher than those registered with the National
Council of People with Disabilities. Nothing explains the disparity
apart from the fact that our communities still live in the past and
are not ready to support our brothers and sisters who struggle with
disabilities.
We would like to make our appeal to all and let us understand
that as human beings we are obligated to give as much help and
support to this forgotten and marginalised group of our society. In
the rural areas people go blind merely because the cataracts they
have could not be removed and cured in proper time. Those with
physical disabilities should not be condemned to a life of negli-
gence. There is a lot we can give to empower them be functional
in the community and make a meaning contribution to help their
families. Ummah Foundation has started and we want other or-
ganisations and individual well-wishers to emulate and give their
maximum support.
