On the Road to YOUR R

NBCOT Self-Assessment identified areas of focus:

For each NBCOT performance task, write out what knowledge/skills you already
possess and what you need/want to focus on in your preparation process.

Domain 1

Task 1: Acquire information about a clients functional skills, roles, context, and
prioritized needs through the use of available resources and standardized and
non-standardized assessments in order to develop an occupational profile.

Strengths: I think I am confident in knowing many orthopedic assessments

Weaknesses: I could improve my ability to know the expected progressions of
many diseases or conditions

Task 2: Analyze evidence obtained from the occupational profile to identify

factors that influence a clients occupational performance.

Strengths: I am proficient in understanding an activity analysis

Weaknesses: I have some trouble being able to apply theoretical approaches

Domain 2

Task 1: Analyze and interpret standardized and non-standardized assessment

results, using information obtained about the clients current condition, context,
and priorities in order to develop and manage client-centered intervention plans.

Strengths: I think one of my strengths in this area is knowing how to integrate

screens or assessments with the occupational profile.
Weaknesses: One area I could improve is being able to determine program
development and client advocacy needs.

Task 2: Collaborate with the client, the clients relevant others, occupational
therapy colleagues, and other professionals and staff, using a client-centered
approach to manage occupational therapy services guided by evidence and
principles of best practice.

client skills, abilities and expected outcomes when related to length of stay and
transition plan.

Domain 3

Task 1: Manage interventions for the infant, child, or adolescent client, using
clinical reasoning, the intervention plan, and best practice standards consistent
with pediatric condition(s) and typical developmental milestones (e.g., motor,
sensory, psychosocial, and cognitive) in order to support participation within
areas of occupation.

Strengths: One part of this task I think is a strength would be knowing

intervention methods to improve strength, ROM, and activity tolerance.
Weaknesses: My weaknesses in this task include knowing the developmental
milestones, assistive technology, and knowing when and how to make
recommendations to the teacher, caregiver, or parent.

Task 2: Manage interventions for the young, middle-aged, or older adult client,
using clinical reasoning, the intervention plan, and best practice standards
consistent with general medical, neurological, and musculoskeletal condition(s) in
order to achieve functional outcomes within areas of occupation.

Strengths: My strength in this area is knowing appropriate splint design and

fabrication and knowing contraindications for many conditions
Weaknesses: Weaknesses in this task for me include: knowing intervention
methods for feeding and eating skills, knowing Ranchos Los Amigos scale, and
knowing methods for grading interventions.

Task 3: Manage interventions for the young, middle-aged, and older adult client,
using clinical reasoning, the intervention plan, and best practice standards
consistent with psychosocial, cognitive, and developmental abilities in order to
achieve functional outcomes within areas of occupation.

Score you want to receive on the exam: _475_____________
provide evidence-based services.

Strengths: My strength in this task is knowing methods for analyzing and

interpreting research and its application to practice.
Weaknesses: A weakness for me in this is understanding methods for
evaluating, monitoring, and documenting service competency.

Task 2: Manage occupational therapy service provision in accordance with laws,

regulations, accreditation guidelines, and facility policies and procedures
governing safe and ethical practice in order to protect consumers.

Strengths: A strength for me in this task is knowing and understanding the

scope of practice for an OTR.
Weaknesses: My weakness in this area is knowing the influence of policies,
procedures, laws, and regulations.

Personal Considerations: list out all the things going on in your life as you are
graduating that will influence or may impede your study/review process:

I do not have many major life event happening to me that will influence me ability
to study. Some things I do have going on are work, being able to find health
insurance after mine runs out at the end of February, and finding time to look for
a job.

Use of NBCOT Aspire Tools and Study Resources: from use of the iPad
materials, OT 680 preparation and NBCOT portal study tool describe your use of
the following and how these tools have and/or can continue to assist you in your
prep.

Exam Blue Print Document (link on After FW advising form and discussed on
1/25/17):
This has helped me guide my studying to focus on interventions. Knowing that
Domain 3 is almost half the exam, has made me realize that is an area I need to
focus on (especially since it has been consistently my lowest score on the OTKE
and practice exam).

NBCOT Flashcards (on iPad):

I need to take advantage of the flashcards more. I think they are an easy to
access tool of something that I can review for 20 minutes a day and still cover a
lot of material.

Knowledge Match Game (on my.NBCOT portal):

Name: _Sean Loran____________
Date and time of Day you plan to take the exam: _4/10/17 at 9:00 AM_____
Score you want to receive on the exam: _475_____________
I tried playing this game a couple times. While I think it had useful information
and content, I did not like how it does not give you rationale for the correct
answer.

iBook Study Guide (on iPad):

I have used this some, and I like that it has more questions on it. The strategies
we discussed in class about ranking the answers in order to find the best answer
is very useful.

Other items discussed during workshop days:

One resource I have used is the AOTA exam prep. It gives you a few information
sheets about various conditions and populations that is a nice overview. It also
offers more practice questions.

Curriculum Content Exam Outcomes: Complete the six quizzes on the Moodle
Prep site and review your performance.

NBCOT Practice Clinical Simulation Testing Score: You will receive a pass code
email mail from NBCOT your practice exam materials. As part of the NBCOT
exam workshop on 1/25/17 you will complete the CST. (Did you select to do
many tasks that are indicated as things NOT to do?) Describe your analysis of:

Score: (Number correct/total) x 100=70%

There were some that I answered yes and were wrong, but not many. I
also had particular trouble with section 1 of the third scenario. This tells me I
need to take a closer look at pediatric assessments.

Domain areas to focus on: Domain 3 and Domain 1

Timing of completion: 30 minutes

NBCOT Practice Exam Results: During the NBCOT exam workshop, on

Thursday 1/26/17 you will complete a 2 hour 100 question multiple choice testing
exam that provides you a scaled score just like you will receive after completing
the real NBCOT certification exam.

Total Scaled Score: 445

NBCOT MCT Practice Exam % Scores:

Domain 1: 70%
Domain 2: 57%
Domain 3: 53%
Domain 4: 60%

What domains are the identified on the score report as areas for study focus:
Domain 3 and Domain 2

How was your timing during the exam? Did you complete it within the
timeframe? Thoughts on how you progressed through the exam:
I was able to complete it with about six minutes left. Throughout the exam I found
myself keeping one eye on the clock and doing mental calculations of how long I
should spend on each remaining question. I may have gotten distracted by it and
rushed through some questions.

The week before your exam date, on the day and time you plan to travel to
the exam location, travel to the site to familiarize yourself with the travel
route. Make sure you have alternative routes planned out also. You
cannot be late on exam day!

Possibly more practice questions

- Identify at least 3 classmates who have strengths in areas where you

need to focus your study- list these individuals
o 1. Leah
o 2. Hannah Little
o 3. Shelby Stevens

Do you have a study group? Your group can reserve study rooms in the library
organizing your group preparation as though it is another 6 week class has
proven very effective for many graduates. List out members of your NBCOT
exam Success Study Team:
Petra, Matt, Shelby

Link to reserve a library study room:

http://spalding.libcal.com/booking/groupstudy

How will you assess the effectiveness of your actions (daily & weekly)?
Based on how well I do on the practice questions each week

What tasks will you do the night before the exam to prepare? This is not the time
for last minute frenzied review. Read the suggestions in the NBCOT Study
Guide. (p. 64 of 396 landscape format) List out what you plan to do:
