Prompt: Identify and describe a Lost Generation Trait; provide examples of how the
writers of the Lost Generation reflected that trait in at least three texts. Use MLA
guidelines to cite at least one quote from each of the three texts.

The Lost Generation. A phrase that expresses how group of people were just lost, and
forgotten. Historically, the Lost Generation is the generation that was born before or during the
World War I and died as a cause of the war. "That is what you are. That's what you all are ... all
of you young people who served in the war. You are a lost generation (Gertrude Stein). Ernest
Hemingway was an author that have wrote a lot of stories and texts that talked about the Lost
Generation and what they have got through. There were a lot of traits that characterized Lost
Generation and one of them was Love. Love was emphasized a lot in Hemingways writings, but
did it work out?

A Very Short Story written by Ernest Hemingway was a story that basically showed
how the relationship between an injured soldier and his nurse went. Theyve fallen in love for 3
whole months in Italy when he was seeking treatment after the war. Luz was the name of his
nurse. They wanted to get married but they did not have enough paperwork, nor time because
the soldier was going back to America. After he left, she wrote him back telling that she fell in
love with another person, and realised that their love was only a boy and girl love. This quote
is related to the Lost Generation trait by having love, and living it for a quite long time, but at the
end, this love did not go as they wanted it before. It changed, and did not work out.

Ernie and Agnes similar to A Very Short Story expressed a relationship between
Ernest Hemingway and Agnes Von Kurowsky starting with their meeting in the Red Cross
hospital in Milan in 1918. Everybody fell for Agnes, but Hemingway fell hardest. People
Magazines The Greatest Love Stories of the Century. Hemingway loved his nurse. Nurses
were forbidden to date patients; however, Hemingway and Agnes managed love notes, dinners
and possibly more than that. I am still very fond of you, but it more as a mother than a

sweetheart Agnes Von Kurowsky. It was her letter to Hemingway after returning to the States
that consisted her breaking up with him. It relates to the trait of the Lost Generation which was
love, and how their love was not enough for them to stay together after the war was over in
1919.

The End of Something also written by Ernest Hemingway, showed a love relationship
between Jack and Marjorie. Their love relationship lasted a long period of time as other stories
were narrated; although, Jack got sick of it and in this case, he was the one that broke up with
Marjorie. Telling her that it isnt fun anymore was enough to end up their relationship. It relates
to the trait of the Lost Generation by having a love relationship as the previous stories, and
ending those relationships for almost the same reason, however, Jack was the one that felt that
he got sick of love relationships with women, and he was the one that ended up everything.

Along those 3 texts, one of the Lost Generation traits was Love. Love never worked out
in any of the stories that were studied, and that was what was being proved referring to the texts
and the prompt. This relates to our modern world by showing that nothing is going to last
forever, and as the love stories were over, and World War I ended, everything else will end. The
Lost Generation were forgotten, and that is what we are taught, but if it is looked at it from
another side, they are not forgotten, and they are appreciated because those are who raised the
country and made it as it is today.
