Programs & Classes at Southern Arts Society

Southern Arts Society (SASI) offers a variety of classes and workshops for all skill levels.
For more information please visit us in person, or check our website at
www.southernartssociety.org. There you will find the class description and a list of supplies
required for the student to bring. If any materials are provided by the teacher, that will be
listed as well.

Students should wear appropriate clothing for art classes, or bring an apron or smock
to wear. Some paints and materials stain and cannot be removed from clothing. Please bring
your own snacks or lunch, unless noted otherwise. Soft drinks and water are available at SASI
for .50 cents.

You must register and pay in advance to reserve your seat in the class. SASI accepts
cash, check and credit cards. Class size and seating are limited. Classes that do not
register the minimum number of students may be canceled. If the class is canceled by the
instructor all payments will be refunded.

NOTE TO STUDENTS
SASI has table top easels for students to use during classes. We also have limited supplies to
borrow: brushes, paints, and other tools in case you are missing an item. Donations are
welcome. We may also have w/c paper or canvas to purchase. Please ask.
Please Arrive Early to set up for your class so that the instructor may start on time.
Doors open hour prior to class for you to set up. Be aware of time for lunch breaks.
Always be respectful of other students and limit interruptions during class.

FEBRUARY CLASSES

Painting with Pastels


Saturday FEB 18, 10 am to 4 pm
Instructor: Malia Bryngelson
Cost: $50 SASI Members, $55 Non-members
Ages: 14 & up Skill Level: All Skill levels
Bring your own lunch
You will learn: We will talk about basic pastel techniques for those new to the medium, as
well as more about layering and additional underpainting for those with experience. If you have
questions about the class or what to bring, email Malia at maliabryngel56@gmail.com.
Supplies to Bring:
Participants should bring reference photos, an old paint brush, pastels, pastel paper and a
drawing board or work surface. Malia will also have supplies to share. SASi has table easels to
use.

DRAWING 101
Mondays in March
March 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th
Time: 6 pm 8:30 pm
Instructor: Ron Shepard
Series of 4 classes for Beginners who want to learn basic drawing skills.
Ages: 14 and up
Cost: $20 per class (members);
$25 per class (non-members)
Alternative Cost: (non-refundable)
All 4 classes for $60 (members)

Supplies for Students to Bring:
5 Drawing Graphite Pencils 4H, 2H, H, 2B, 4B
Drawing Pad: 9 x 12 Sketch Pad
Kneaded Eraser
Pink Pearl or White Eraser

Week 1: Line understanding line and its uses in drawing is fundamental to drawing better
Shape-improves our drawing by helping us understand what we are seeing
Form-creates the illusion of light source through value and shading to create the illusion of
form
Week 2: Value-learn how to create mood and reality in a drawing
Space-exploring the area above, below, around, and within objects for drawing
Week 3: Perspective-1 point, 2 point, and 3 point perspectivelearn how to use lines to
create the illusion of space on a two-dimensional surface
Vanishing Point-learn how horizons become the vanishing point line to which perspective
becomes accurate
Week 4: Drawing Techniques-explore different materials that are used to create a drawing
and the process by which media is applied to the surface
Ron will teach ongoing Classes in following Months on Monday evenings. Please let us
know if youre interested for intermediate lessons going forward.
Paper/Boxes/Bookmaking
Three 2-day Workshops
March 13 18, 10 am to 4 pm
Instructor: Claudia Lee
Claudia Lee will be at SASi for one week teaching 3 separate 2-day workshops.
Claudia Lee of Liberty, Tenn. is a studio artist, designer, author and instructor working in
handmade paper, boxes and books. Matthew English, her full-time studio assistant at Liberty
Paper, will be assisting with the class. This is a special opportunity to work with an experienced
artist in this medium. Claudia will provide all the materials needed for each class - to make
the boxes, decorative papers as well as text blocks for the

Workshop #1 Papers / Stitched Boxes


March 13-14 (Mon-Tues)
Day 1. Create your own decorative papers and use them, along with
handmade paper provided by the instructor, to make beautiful boxes. Begin
Box-making.
Day 2. Learn how to make patterns for various box sizes & shapes and
employ clever construction techniques to make the boxes sturdy. Have fun
adding accents of collage, stitching, and other embellishments - buttons &
beads, yarns & ribbons, or possibly additional papers brought from home.

Workshop #2 Papers / Books part 1


March 15 - 16 (Wed-Thurs)
Day 1. Create Decorative Papers - includes 2-3 different processes of
decorating papers to be used in the bookmaking. Begin bookmaking - Strap
Binding with variations
Day 2. Australian Flat Piano Hinge Binding.

Workshop #3 Papers / Books part 2


March 17 - 18 (Fri-Sat)
Day 1. Create Decorative Papers - includes 2-3 different processes of decorating
papers to be used in the bookmaking. Begin bookmaking - Hard Cover Books
Stitched Over Straps.
Day 2. Continuation and finish strap book and, as time allows, make an
assortment of small projects using our decorated papers.
