Answer any four full questions

1. A steel plate of 20 cm square and 0.5 cm thick, is heated uniformly to 430 C. Afterwards it is kept (10)
vertically in still air at a temperature of 20 C and a pressure of 1 atm. Neglecting radiation and
making suitable assumptions, calculate the time required for the plate to cool to 130 C. Take the
density of steel to be 7900kg/m3 and its specific heat to be 460 J/kg K.
2. (a) Air at 1 atmosphere pressure 60 C flows parallel to and on both sides of a flat plate (20 cm (6)
square) with a velocity of 15 m/s. If the plate is maintained at a temperature of 20 C, calculate
the rate of heat transfer to the plate and the drag. Calculate and compare the values of the
same quantities if the leading edge is roughened and the boundary layer is turbulent.
(b) How are the average friction(Cf ) and heat transfer coefficients (h) determined in flow over a (4)

flat plate? Derive Cf and h from the local values for a laminar flow over a flat plate.
3. Beverage in cans 150 mm long and 60 mm in diameter is initially at 27 C and is to be cooled by (10)
placement in a refrigerator compartment at 4 C. In the interest of maximizing the cooling rate,
should the cans be laid horizontally or vertically in the compartment? As a first approximation,
neglect heat transfer from the ends.
4. (a) Sketch the radial velocity profiles(U(r)), temperature profiles(T(r)) and shear stress in a pipe (4)
flow at two axial locations (one in the entry length and the other in fully developed region).
Plot the temperature profiles for Tw < T and Tw > T cases (where, Tw and T are wall and
fluid temperature respectively)
(b) Velocity and temperature profiles for laminar flow in a tube of radius ro = 10 mm have the (6)
form

u(r) = 0.1[1 (r/r0 )2 )]

T (r) = 344.8 + 75(r/r0 )2 18.8(r/r0 )4

with units of m/s and K, respectively. Determine the corresponding value of the mean (or bulk)
temperature, Tm, at this axial position.
5. (a) A glass-door firescreen, used to reduce exfiltration of room air through a chimney, has a height (6)
of 0.71 m and a width of 1.02 m and reaches a temperature of 232 C. If the room temperature
is 23 C, estimate the convection heat rate from the fireplace to the room.
(b) Consider a hot boiled egg in a spacecraft that is filled with air at atmospheric pressure and (2)
temperature at all times. Will the egg cool faster or slower when the spacecraft is in space
instead of on the ground? Explain.
(c) Consider two fluids, one with a large coefficient of volume expansion and the other with a (2)
small one. In what fluid will a hot surface initiate stronger natural convection currents? Why?
Assume the viscosity of the fluids to be the same.
